The present Pacific Ocean arose from rapid sea-floor spreading that commenced in the late Mesozoic, and continues to the present day. It started within what is here called the Medusa complex of seaways, basins and troughs with spreading ridges and volcanic arcs, that girdled the earth, including the Palaeotethys and Neotethys of Eurasia between Gondwanaland and Laurasia. Detailed mapping and analysis of palaeofaunas and volcanic arcs indicate that several seaways, rather than one or two, extended throughout Tethys, and into areas now occupied by the Pacific Ocean. The Medusa complex developed under a long sustained wrench regime, right lateral at least from New Zealand to Eur.ope, and saw the origin, maturation and closure of elongate and oval basins under erratic sea-floor spreading, in which no Eulerian pole of rotation remained fixed for long. The name Medusa stems from the analogy of snake-like writhing hair to the constantly shifting development of basins and orogens within the complex. The Indian Ocean split and opened up Gondwanaland concomitant with the later development and deformation of the Tethyan segment- of Medusa, whereas, to the east, the Pacific Ocean opened within Medusa itself, and dispersed Medusa around the rim of the Pacific through sea-floor spreading and strike-slip faulting.

SAN DIMAS, in the State of Durango, Mexico, on the frontier of the State of Sinaloa, is the centre of an extensive and rich mining region, which has been exploited for over a hundred years; and the patio process for working silver ores has there attained the highest perfection of which it is capable. Local modifications have been engrafted upon the underlying principles of the process, but, as a whole, the San Dimas practice so fully illustrates its typical capabilities, that I have undertaken to describe its workings in the hope of lightening, to some degree, the labors of my professional brethren who may have occasion to visit Mexico." As is tolerably well known, the patio process, like all other systems of free amalgamation, is not successful with ores containing more than a trace of zinc or lead, the presence of zincblende being especially obnoxious. Iron and copper in small quantities are not particularly disadvantageous. The process succeeds very well with all sulphide ores which do not contain much more than a trace of arsenic and antimony, provided the tailings are concentrated, although, of course, it is best adapted for free milling ores. For suitable silver ores that contain small amounts of free gold the process is still a good one, but where the gold is combined with sulphurets, a considerable and even an excessive loss is inevitable. Hitherto the Mexicans have submitted to this loss, but, since the introduction of American mills, they are gradually abandoning the patio process in favor of the other. "The Bureau of Mines evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from 135 mines and deposits worldwide. Collectively, the evaluated countries represent 93 pct of world gold production. Total recoverable gold available (as of January 1984) from a subset of 111 significant producing mines and developing deposits in 13 market economy countries (MEC's) is estimated at 810 million tr oz. The Republic of South Africa is estimated to account for 87 pct of total recoverable gold. The United States and Canada account for 4 and 4.5 pct of the total, respectively. Eighty-three percent of total recoverable gold is available at a constant 1984 break-even price of $400/tr oz, and 70 pct is available at $300/tr oz. South Africa accounts for 90 pct of the gold available at $400/tr oz or less.Major conclusions are that (1) South Africa should remain the largest world producer through the year 2000, (2) annual MEC output in 2000 should not be significantly different than current output given constant 1984 gold prices of more than $300/tr oz, and (3) there may be a significant decline in production after 2010 in the absence of major new discoveries and continued development of new mines to offset the depletion of the South African mines. INTRODUCTIONSince the late 1970's the world gold mining industry has been characterized by dynamic growth in production and volatility in price. World production in 1983 was almost 15 pct greater than in 1980, and the short-term trend continues upward. Annual dollar-based price changes since the early 1970's have been unprecedented in both magnitude and volatility. This commodity, which sold for $35/tr oz3 for over a third of a century, reached an annual average $612/tr oz in 1980. Until 1980, the future price of gold seemed set on an upward trend. Since that year, however, world gold prices have fallen by over 50 pct to slightly over $300/tr oz at the end of 1984.Against this background, this study was undertaken to determine (1) the level of world demonstrated gold resources, (2) total and annual availability of gold mine production, (3) long-run production costs per operation and by national aggregates, (4) the economic and technical factors that impact upon cost and availability, and (5) probable future mine production and cost trends."

"When using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during tunneling work, unexpected ground conditions can be encountered that are not predicted in the design stage. These reduce the stability of tunnels, and can result in considerable economic losses. This paper analyzes the potential risk events that may occur due to risky ground conditions. A resistivity survey is utilized to predict the risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face during construction. The potential risk events are evaluated considering both the occurrence probability and the impact. A TBM risk management system that can suggest proper solution methods for potential risk events is also developed. Multi-Criterion Decision Making (MCDM) is utilized to determine the optimal solution method to handle risk events. Lastly, an actual construction site, at which a risk event occurred during tunnel construction, is analyzed utilizing the Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Shield TBM, to verify the efficacy of the proposed system.INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method has been widely adopted in numerous tunneling projects because, as a mechanized tunneling method, it is also environmentally friendly, exhibiting minimal noise and vibration when compared with conventional tunneling method. In addition, it provides considerable economic benefits that allow for a high advance rate for long drives during construction. However, the TBM method has a limitation, as it is unable to deal with unexpected situations during construction, as the system is not capable of moving backwards. This leads to delays or even stoppages, and a corresponding increase in construction costs due to the need to arrange for alternative equipment and solutions. It is essential to retain systematic management in order to prevent or deal with unforeseen consequences such as the collapse of a tunnel face, ground surface upheaval or settlement, and construction delay due to water leakage during construction. Therefore, a systematic risk management system that is applicable during the construction stage of the TBM tunnel should be developed, taking into account the predicted risky ground conditions ahead of the tunnel face in advance."

The Russia Wharf segment of the Silver Line Phase II Project for the MBTA incorporated ground freezing and underpinning during New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) tunneling through timber pile foundations, urban fill, and abandoned wharf structures beneath two historic 7-story buildings with steel frames and masonry facades. During construction, the project team implemented an extensive program to monitor, evaluate, and mitigate the ground and building movements caused by the various construction activities. Mitigation included freeze cycling and building raising/lowering to compensate for ground movements and safely maintain the serviceability and occupancy of the buildings. In this paper, we present the history of the freeze, tunnel construction, and thaw-related movements that occurred and the building response that we observed.

To realize a radiowave communication along mine galleries a few kilometers long without repeater, we show that it is possible to use a coaxial cable bearing an important surface transfer impedance like a transmission line with an inductive coupling to the transmitter and the receiver. MOST extraordinary of the technical developments in placer gold mining during the last five years has been the rise of the dragline dredge, by which is meant a floating washing plant for auriferous gravel, fed by a dragline excavator. The idea originated in the fall of 1933, when Horace Onyett constructed a floating washing plant to which gravel was delivered by a dragline excavator standing on dry land. Onyett's operation near Oroville, Calif., and another started by H. F. England later on Wyandotte Creek, Butte County, Calif., yielded '75 oz. of fine gold before the end of 1933. Although the first operation was abandoned shortly as un- profitable, the dragline-dredge method of gold recovery soon began to expand at a boom rate. As a matter of interest, the Onyett operation was taken over later by Lord and Bishop, who are re- ported to have succeeded in making it the first financially successful drag- line dredge. Deep mining requires innovative approaches in ground control technology and the search for new ground support materials including backfill. There is a need to look at mine waste materials that may be available in deep mines to assess their suitability for use as composite backfill. Composite materials are widely used in all areas of engineering because of their unique and often superior structural properties compared to those of the singular constituent materials. Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest towards the investigation and use of various types of composite backfill materials as special applications fill in mines. A research project is being conducted at CANMET- Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Natural Resources Canada, to investigate the properties of potential ground support materials for use in deep mines. As part of this investigation, composite backfill materials were prepared by combining waste rock aggregates and mill tailings in various ratios, to determine their optimal mix proportions for strength development. A few cemented rockfill and straight tailings paste backfill samples were also prepared and were used as controls for the study. Two sample sizes were used for the investigation in order to evaluate the scale effects on the material behaviour. A set of samples were cured at 44 EC to simulate the anticipated temperature conditions in deep mines. A second set of samples were cured at 23 EC to provide engineering reference data. The test results show that compared to either the cemented rockfill or the straight tailings pastefill material, the composite backfill samples were the strongest and stiffest of all the test materials investigated in this study. The composite backfill samples also produced the lowest void ratio and porosity values compared to the cemented rockfill and the straight tailings backfill material. This paper will present the results of the laboratory investigations to date. It will also outline the on-going work at CANMET - Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories to further assess the ground support potential and viability of using composite fills in deep mines.

The Bureau of Mines has been involved in the drilling of vertical, horizontal, and directional coalbed gas drainage boreholes for mine safety since 1964. In that time, boreholes have been drilled in most of the major coal regions of the United States under a wide variety of geologic conditions. Many of the geologic conditions that occur in the coal measures are detrimental to gas drainage; others may be beneficial. Analytical techniques to determine the gas content of coal samples and evaluate regional trends of gas distribution have been developed. Drilling techniques that maximize the acquisition of coalbed gas data and geologic information have been determined. Although some of the geologic factors influencing the placement and potential success of coalbed gas drainage boreholes have been reported in papers on individual projects, a complete, systematic compilation has not previously been available. The objective of this paper is to pro- vide information on specific geologic factors that should be considered prior to, during, and after the drilling of coalbed gas drainage bore-holes. Many of the commonsense considerations that have been learned through many years of Bureau of Mines experience, but have generally not been reported formally, are included for those who may be considering coalbed gas drainage drilling for the first time, or who have not had the opportunity to encounter a substantial number of geologic situations.

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. An on-line visualization technique and methodology was developed to investigate the role of fine sphalerite (< 10 um) aggregation in flotation. The images of particle aggregates under different operating conditions were recorded and analyzed. The effect of impeller design on particle aggregation was demonstrated. This difference was not mainly due to the energy input into the system, but due to the resultant hydrodynamic conditions created by the impeller and their effect on particle interactions. The recorded image showed that adding fine silica (- 5 um) did not interfere with fine sphalerite aggregation, thereby showing no effect on the sphalerite recovery. Effect of the enlarged aggregate size on increasing flotation recovery was confirmed. Although Malvern Mastersizer produced consistently lower estimates of aggregate size than those by the image analysis, both methods responded to the changes in operating conditions in the similar trend. It was shown from this study that on-line visualization technique is a powerful tool for studying fine particle aggregation and morphology in the context of diagnosis for the flotation separation.

CONSIDERABLE interest has been shown lately in various types of furnaces for the production of high, temperatures, both for laboratory purposes and for small industrial uses. Dr. J. A. Harker1 described certain modifications of the Arsem graphite resistance helix for high-temperature work at the National Physical Laboratory. Dr. Northrup ,also has developed two interesting forms of high-temperature furnaces. In 1911, Messrs. Winne and Dantsizen2 described two forms, of resistance furnaces using ductile molybdenum or tungsten as resistors. Since the discovery, by this laboratory, of methods for producing these metals in ductile form, their use as resistance elements in the research laboratory of the General Electric Co. has grown to such an extent that they are now almost indispensable. These furnaces are used here for alloy research, annealing, heat-treating, and practically all f the thermal processes requiring temperatures above 900° C. Various types of furnaces have been developed to meet the general needs of laboratory work, and it is the purpose of this paper briefly to describe some of these furnaces. A tubular furnace wound with a metallic resistor is the simplest type to construct, and almost every laboratory has made such furnaces. The only essential difference between a furnace wound with platinum or base metal and one wound with tungsten or molybdenum is that the coils of the latter must be heated in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. It has long been our custom here to build our resistance furnaces with a metallic casing from which the tube could be easily removed for rewinding. The heat-insulating material-usually calcined magnesia, alumina, silica, or silex, depending upon the nature of the resistor-is used in powdered form so that it can he readily removed and replaced. The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

G. W. Healy (union Carbide Metals 0.)-The author&apos;s paper is a useful contribution to the store of maps of chemical activities of oxides in multi-component slag systems. It is also a good example of the utility of the Gibbs-Schuhmann technique for calculating activities in a system where that of one of the components has been measured. This paper Koh and Caugherty. Because of this nonlinearity, preparation cf suitable standards and/or correction for absorption and enhancement are essential in microanalysis. However, our objection is not the conclusion that Dr. Aaronson has arrived at nor the technique he has used; but only to the foot-note credited to V. Macres. The level of chromium that he was concerned with (less than 3 pet) is so low that the deviation of uncorrected Cr-curve will be negligible. Besides Dr. Aaronson has used chromium intensity from martensite and set it equal the bulk chromium content of the alloy. Using this chromium-intensity as a reference, he has calculated the amount of chromium in the ferrite. This amounts to the same as using an internal standard. Since the chromium content in austenite and ferrite are almost the same, enhancement due to iron in both will be the same and therefore does not need to be corrected. together with the author&apos;s recently published one1 on the CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system will be most helpful to others learning to apply Schuhmann&apos;s method, which merits a far wider application than it has received to date and should greatly aid our understanding of equilibria between metal and oxide phases. As shown by okcen" its use may even be extended to sections of systems with any number of oxides. I have some questions as to the selection of equilibrium constants made by Dr. Turkdogan. Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite&apos;s use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

Bench-scale electrokinetic experiments were performed to elucidate the electrokinetic remediation mechanisms of arsenate from artificially contaminated kaolinite. The electrokinetic experiments in which a constant voltage was applied demonstrated that high soil pH favored arsenate remediation with respect to both the remediation time and electricity consumption. It was also demonstrated that applying a pulse voltage (1 hour ON, 1 hour OFF) significantly improved the electricity consumption efficiency when the soil pH was maintained at the initial value during the experiments; this trend was not observed when the soil pH was gradually increased from the cathode side. These electrokinetic experimental results indicate that the remediation rate-limiting step varied with soil pH. When the soil pH was maintained at the initial value of 7.2 during the experiments, arsenate desorption was the remediation rate-limiting step rather than the migration of dissolved arsenate toward the anode. Conversely, when the cathode pH was not controlled and the soil pH was correspondingly increased gradually from the cathode side, the migration of hydroxyl and desorbed arsenate ions toward the anode played a more important role in the control of the overall remediation efficiency.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve mining project value by predicting the impact that ore and waste characteristics will have on mining and metallurgical processes. This requires integration of rich spatial models of orebody characteristics with validated process response models. These models have, until recently, been constrained by the spatial coverage and representativity of relevant data and the ability to validate predictions made.The revolution in the diversity and volume of data and computational power that is now becoming available for integrated geoscientific modelling of orebodies, and stochastic simulation of mining and mineral processes is accelerating. By embracing emergent integrated data analysis and simulation techniques, geoscientists and engineers can lead a transformation in the way the mining value chain, from orebody to recovery, can be conceived, evaluated, and operated by using the geometallurgical paradigm.This paper describes a methodology that is applied to an existing diamond operation. Analysis of spatial and process data is used to build an integrated geometallurgical value chain model (IGVCM). This IGVCM is used to generate geometallurgical options and evaluate their potential outcomes. The model facilitates the use of flexible, highly configurable, and potentially automated intelligent approaches to evaluate mining and mineral process configuration, and results in more robust design outcomes. The approach described here, and its successful implementation has potential to deliver step-changes in value. IntroductionGeometallurgy aims to identify treatability risks – and opportunities – that arise from the interaction of orebody characteristics with mining and treatment. Improved understanding of the rock/process relationships allows project planners and production teams to predict performance, identify potential shortfalls, and thus enable the proactive creation and evaluation of strategies to mitigate these risks. These advanced insights also create opportunities for continually improving operational performance through dynamically adapting and improving the process response to the changing properties of the ore (Figure 1)."
