This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

Recently, work was carried out by the Shotcrete Working Group to study anisotropy in steel fibre reinforced shotcrete using strain-controlled, compressive strength testing methods. The shotcrete materials used and specimen preparation procedures as well as testing methods are described. The test results are discussed and it is concluded that, because of the anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced shotcrete, it may be worthwhile investigating the degree of such anisotropy in practice using strain-controlled, strength testing techniques.

In a narrow vein mining scenario, employing preconcentration technology underground not only results in reduced transport and handling costs but may allow alternative mining methods to be implemented, improving overall productivity. Using processing technology underground is not a new concept with underground crushing and screening operations being quite widely utilised. With advances in processing technology over recent years, there are now a number of robust processing methodologies in existence that are capable of performing separation of ore and waste at a relatively coarse size. Many of these technologies are readily adaptable to the underground environment and if employed could result in a number of cost and productivity benefits.Assessment of the oreÆs suitability for preconcentration technology is the first step in harnessing these potential savings. This paper discusses how coarse ore sorting and gravity separation could be employed underground in a narrow-vein scenario and details the test work that is required at the front-end of a project to see if this potential exists.CITATION:Murphy, B, van Zyl, J and Domingo, G, 2012. "INTRODUCTION.Luring the year 1923 a complete survey was made of the condition of research in the reduction (milling) and concentration of ores and nonmetallic minerals - that is, up to the stage where the ores or concentrates were ready for hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatment. This survey was carried on under the general supervision of L. A. Lyon, assistant director and chief metallurgist of the Bureau of mines, in cooperation with the milling committee of the American Institute of mining and metallurgical Engineers, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California. Other institutions, including the National Research council, were of assistance and outlined recommendations during the study.While this report is on ""ore dressing"", it contains short sections on coal and clay. The mechanical handling that these minerals undergo is ""dressing"", so that ore dressing is inclusive of metallic and nonmetallic minerals. ""milling"", in its broadest sense, includes with ore dressing certain other metallurgical treatment which the report is not designed to cover.The survey revealed that considerable experimentation is being carried on great cost to the mining industry, but that the research is in general poorly coordinated while companies and firms are adequately taking care of routine tests and the mechanical features involved in their own operations, no comprehensive study of the fundamental principles of ore reduction is now in progress or contemplated. Many industries, besides mining, are interested in the preparation of materials for final treatment, rendering this investigation of value also to them. This class of fundamental research is neglected by industry unless there is some agency which can bring together at least a majority of this interested in a cooperative effort. It can not be effectively handled by a single company; and, moreover, no company can be expected to bear the whole burden of an investigation to benefit the entire industry or a number of industries hence there is need for concerted study within reasonable limits. Furthermore, co-operation eliminates duplication, which is largely a waste of effort and capital."

Since March 28, domestic producer prices on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot have been at 5l¢ per pound. Dealers in this same time frame have held ingot quotes at 49¢-50.5¢ per pound. COBALT: Imports from southern Africa in 1976 constituted 73 percent of total cobalt imports. Moreover, the United States is 98 percent dependent on imports of cobalt. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines is closely monitoring developments abroad to ensure an advance notice of any possibility of a shortfall in supply. Included in these imports were those from Zaire (41 percent directly from Zaire and 15 percent via Belgium-Luxembourg), Zambia (11 percent), and Botswana (6 percent). Also being closely watched are industry stocks.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop preliminary engineering data necessary if the cobalt-rich manganese crusts that occur in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Archipelago are to be mined. The research was divided into the following sections: (1) physical, mineralogical, and chemical descriptions; (2) mechanical property testing, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and a rippability index; and (3) mechanical cutting characteristics, including average and peak cutter forces, the specific energy, and cuttings size distribution. Section 1 utilized microscope, X-ray powder diffractometer, and electron microprobe analyses. Section 2 utilized standard mechanical property testing techniques. Section 3 utilized a converted planer mill with full-size coal cutters to fragment the crust and substrate samples. The manganese crust samples were mainly manganese and iron oxides and hydroxides with an average cobalt content of 1 pct and had a nucleus or substrate of rock or sediment. The significant results shown by the mechanical property and cutting tests are that the crust and all but two types of substrates (basalt and trachyte) are weak materials and easily cut with standard drag cutters. The crusts are generally comparable to medium hard coal in strength and in their resistance to cutting.

Oyu Tolgoi is a large Cu-Au porphyry deposit in the south Gobi desert, Mongolia. The first of several deep, large-diameter, concrete-lined shafts, Shaft 1, is nearing completion. It will have a finished depth of 1380 m at a diameter of 6.7 m. These shafts will provide access to and hoisting capacity for block caving of deep underground ore. Geotechnical site investigations, and associated predictions of stability and ground support requirements, are compared against actual construction performance. Routine mapping is essential, along with checks against predictions and informing the contractor of ground conditions and variances.Advance rates are compared against predicted rock mass quality. A reasonable correlation exists between Qwall and advance rate. Overbreak and concrete liner thickness is related to the blockiness quotient, RQD/Jn.A ætool-bagÆ of just a few support elements (chain-link mesh, fibrecrete and 2.4 m long friction anchors and resin grouted re-bar bolts) was able to cope with the ground conditions encountered. QA/QC procedures are essential from the factory, through site storage to installation.

A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

THE accuracy of the silver-assay depends in great measure upon a careful regulation of the heat of the muffle during the process of cupellation. At the beginning of the operation, a relatively high temperature is required to " open " the lead buttons, that is, to clear off the black film of oxide that covers the surface of the metal button immediately after fusion has taken place. The muffle is usually closed up until the buttons are uncovered. As soon as a clear, free surface of molten metal is exposed to the oxidizing action of the air, the temperature should immediately be lowered to the minimum temperature at which the formation and absorption of litharge can progress freely, and the buttons still be kept from " freezing." The process, under satisfactory conditions, will be characterized by the formation of rings of litharge crystals (" feathers," as they are styled), on the cupel, about the oxidizing globule; and the nearer these rings of litharge crystals call be made to approach the central oxidizing globule without interfering with the freedom of oxidation and absorption, the smaller will be the volatilization of silver, and consequeiltly the greater the degree of accuracy attained. This minimum heat must be maintained uniformly during the oxidation of the lead; and just as the last of the lead is disappearing, and the button is preparing to l blick," the temperature of the muffle should be allowed to rise so that the last traces of lead will be driven off. This regulation of the heat calls into play all the skill of the assayer, and requires a vigilant eye, able to distirlguish between the slightest variations of temperature of the muffle, assisted by a nice adjustment of fuel and draft. The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

The process of manufacturing ferrophosphorus lies not alone in smelting a mixture of phosphates, silica, iron ore, with coke as fuel, but upon smelting this mixture with coke and air as chemical agents as well as heat producers and in conjunction with extraordinary procedures and manipulations making the process continuous and profitable. For best results there must be cool top, limited fusion zone, hot bottom, good mechanical condition of stock and perfect distribution of gases; also minimum air supply, high heats and excess of coke or carbon. FERROPHOSPHORUS, an alloy of phosphorus and iron or perhaps a physical mixture of definite compounds of iron and phosphorus, has become of increasing importance as the use of the basic open hearth has extended. Commercial ferrophosphorus is a porous, brittle metal of crystalline structure and often with a bluish metallic luster. A typical analysis is as follows: PER CENT. Phosphorus 18.0 to 22.0 Iron 80.0 76.0 Oxygen 0.2 Sulfur : 0.3 Silicon 0.1 Carbon : 0.1 Manganese 0.2 This alloy was first made in an electric furnace, as it was thought that the high heat of the electric arc together with the reductive effect of carbon was necessary. About 1898, J. J. Gray, Jr., was producing a high-phosphorus pig iron in his furnace at Rockdale, Tenn., by using high-phosphorus, local iron ores. As these high-phosphorus ores were difficult to obtain, he conceived the idea of increasing the phosphorus content of the pig iron by the addition of phosphate rock to the furnace burden. When the phosphorus content of the pig was kept low and only small amounts of phosphate rock were added to the burden, no particular troubles were encountered, but when he increased the amount of phosphate rock to produce an 18 per cent. alloy, his furnace troubles rapidly multiplied.

A small underground mine in northern Idaho was used as an experimental facility for studying the role of water in the analysis of mine opening stability. Laboratory test data, borehole measurements and geological mapping assisted in constructing a coupled finite element model of the rock mass. The model was used to make quantitative estimates of: 1) rock stress, strain and displacement changes, and 2) water pressure and flow velocity changes that occurred during historical mining. Stope cuts and wet fills were included in the analysis. Stability of crown pillars between stopes was of particular interest. The relatively low effective stress and high rock mass strength showed that water pressure changes were of no great consequence in agreement with experience. The computational tools used in the analysis may be applied to other wet mines with appropriate changes to site-specific input data.

However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario' s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. Marble wastes are generated by quarries (marble quarry waste-MQW) and processing plants (marble cutting waste-MCW). The large amount of marble wastes is becoming serious problem for industry and environment because of discarded into rivers and lagoons, without any treatment. Marble wastes can cause environmental problem and economic loss if the waste is not used. However, this type of wastes has a good potential to be used as an amendment for the neutralization of acid soils. In this study, MQW and MCW were applied to an acid soil at different rates and their effectiveness on neutralization was evaluated by a laboratory incubation test. The results showed that soil pH increased from 4.71 to 6.36 and 6.84 by applications of MCW and MQW, respectively. It was suggested that MQW and MCW could be used as soil amendments for the neutralization of acid soils, and thus the negative impact of marble wastes on the environment could be reduced.

Sophisticated computer analysis methods such as finite elements, finite differences, and numerical integration have become tools in the mineral processing industry for design of large mill shells. While use of such methods allows the analyst-designer to take new freedom with his designed structure, there are also pitfalls and dangers which must be recognized for the proper use of such sophisticated tools. One of the worst of these is treating any computer answers as "gospel truth." The present paper discusses the knowledge required by the analyst-designer for proper use of computer analysis, as well as explaining to the layman how to identify questionable areas in such structural analyses.

"The release of vanadium, iron, nickel and titanium from the cokes produced in the upgrading of Alberta oil sands bitumen has been assessed for simple chemical leaching processes. Flexicoker coke (Exxon Engineering and Research) has been found to be quite amenable to the recovery of vanadium as well as nickel, iron and some titanium by these techniques, whereas fluid coker coke (Syncrude) and delayed coker coke (Great Canadian Oil Sands) are relatively intractable under the mild conditions employed. The factors affecting the extent of vanadium release are discussed in terms of the surface area accessible, the wettability of the material, and the chemical and physical composition of the coke particles in each case.A novel biologically assisted heap leaching procedure for f1exicoker coke is also described, based on the growth of the chemolithotrophic bacteria, Thiobacillus thiooxidans A TCC 8085, on elemental sulphur added to the coke."

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

Estimating the strength of rock materials by Z. T. BIENIAWSKI, Pr.Eng., D.Sc.(Eng.) (Visitor) A practical approach for estimating the strength behaviour of rock materials is presented. The demand for data on rock properties in engineering design is considered, and it is shown that, based on the trends observed in the South African mining industry during the last twenty years, simple and easy-touse methods for the estimation of the uniaxial and triaxial strength of rock materials are needed. It is shown that the uniaxial compressive strength of rock can be conveniently determined from the pointload strength index, which is obtained underground on unprepared rock cores. The triaxial strength of rock can be estimated for most practical purposes from empirical strength criteria. Two such criteria are proposed that allow estimation of the triaxial strength for rock materials to about 10 per cent. The only input required for these criteria is the uniaxial compressive strength. The validity of the practical approach outlined in this paper is confirmed from the experimental tests conducted on some 700 rock specimens representing five rock types. A practical example for the prediction of rock strength is given.

La découverte de nouveaux gisements métallifères constitue le point de départ du développement de l'industrie minérale. Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). Ils sont utilisés constamment dans les ceintures supracrustales riches en roches métasédimentaires.
