THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield-point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a -maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per. cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to. 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

The occlusion of unliberated gold particles in silicates and sulfides in crushed/milled ore dictates the recovery that can be expected. The grade of this occluded gold in cyanide leach residues shows a consistent, general relationship to the head grade of the ore, irrespective of mineralogy or geographical location. The residue grade almost invariably increases with the head grade, but not in proportion to it. This phenomenon appears to stem from the nature of the geological events originally responsible for creating the ore deposits. A statistically-based technique for determining the true head grade-tail grade relationship from gold plant operating data is described. The effect is illustrated with results from several worldwide gold milling operations analyzed over the last 35 years.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2013 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2013: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Halifax, NS, Canada (formerly Metals Economics Group (MEG); 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2013 as compiled by the USGS; and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities, including economic, social and political conditions, that were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop commodity and regional compilations, reported statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2013 for 20 nonfuel mineral commodities based on surveys returned by companies primarily focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (coal, iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007. MEG included data on the commodities lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum for the first time in 2010 because of the increased topical significance of these commodities. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the MEG and SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. Budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The post-1999 budget surveys by MEG and SNL cover at least 90 percent of world?s reported nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets; the 2013 survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of these budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered is accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities.

The limiting activity coefficient of zinc in a "binary " solvent has been described for several dilute ternary solutions by combining literature data from recent interaction studies in the terminal regions with thermodynamic data for the central regions. Results are discussed in terms of the Alcock and Richardson random solution model. The observed behavior agrees semiquantitatively with predictions using the model. RECENT efforts in the thermodynamics of dilute ternary liquid metallic solutions have been mainly concerned with the interactions between two dilute solutes, that is, the terminal region at an apex of the composition diagram.'-' A more general case is that of the behavior of a dilute solute over the full range of a ternary system, or, more specifically, the limiting activity of solute i as projected to the k-j binary side of the i-j-k composition triangle. An implication of this is that the interaction between i and j at the k apex should connect in some way to the interaction between i and k at the j apex. A model to characterize various types of expected behavior has been discussed by Alcock and Richardson.9,10 Such behavior can range from a simple linear relation for In yi over the 1-k binary to more complex curved relations which depend on various assumptions regarding the heat of solution in the j-k binary system and the presence or absence of clustering with solute i. Quantitative data to assess these concepts have been limited primarily to the cases of nonmetallic interstitial solutes in ferrous solutions. Alcock, Richardson, and various coworkers9-13 have discussed the behavior of oxygen, sulfur, silicon, or hydrogen in dilute solution over the range of iron + metal systems; however, the only data considered by them for substitutional nonferrous metallic solutions were the results of Elliott and Chipman concerning the activity of cadmium in the Pb + Sn, Pb + Bi, and Pb + Sb systems.9 These data were limited and did not cover the terminal regions in detail. An opportunity to extend the Alcock and Richardson considerations to the dilute solution of zinc in various "binary" solvents has been afforded by combining results of several of the recent investigations of ter-minal-region interactions with previous data from the literature for the same more concentrated solutions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of the analysis are shown in Figs. 1 to 5 where the log activity coefficient, (In yZn)xzn--o, is plotted vs the composition of the "binary" solvent. In these plots the end points are the values for In yzn in the appropriate binary solution with Bi, Pb, Sn, Cd, or In at the indicated temperature—usually 550°C (823°K). For the terminal regions the slopes were drawn using the first-order interaction parameters taken from various studies reported in the literature. The data points shown in the central regions were obtained by the short extrapolation to infinite dilution of the logarithm of the activity coefficient calculated from thermodynamic studies reported in the literature for the same systems. The sources of the data are indicated on each figure. Second-order effects were not considered. Reasonably smooth curves can be drawn to connect the central region with the terminal regions for the Zn-Pb + Bi system, Fig. 1, the Zn-Pb + Zn system, Fig. 1, and the Zn-Bi + Cd and Zn-Bi + Sn systems, Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 2, where central region data are available from two independent investigations, the agreement is quite good. For over a century, St. Joe Minerals Corporation in Southeast Missouri has been sinking shafts for their lead mining operations. Upon discovery of the Viburnum Trend, or "New Lead Belt", St. Joe brought its experience and expertise in shaft sinking to the area. Eleven shafts were then sunk in an 18 year period, ending in 1972. In 1981, St. Joe began sinking a new shaft in the Trend with hand-picked employees from the four operating lead mines and service facilities. The paper describes the general history of St. Joe shaft sinking methods and equipment, focusing on the current development of the Viburnum No. 35 Shaft.

Ore fragmentation at the DOZ block cave mine is highly variable, both as a function of rock type and column height of draw. Initially, the mine was constructed and equipped with limited capability to handle drawpoint oversize material. Significant issues with drawpoint availability and achieving overall mine production targets resulted. A suite of secondary sizing tools was added to the mine equipment fleet over a one-year time frame. Although significant oversize continues to be experienced, use of the correct secondary breakage tool for each particular oversize or hang-up occurrence has resulted in increased drawpoint availability, production rate, draw compliance, and operator safety. Currently, a range of secondary breakage techniques is being utilised to size material for delivery to the primary crusher. Run-of-mine material (3) is directly mucked to ore passes fitted with grizzlys that have one-metre square openings. Ore containing small boulders (>1 m3, 3) is loader-trammed to ore passes fitted with rockbreakers. Medium-sized boulders (>2 m3) accessible from the drawpoint are drilled with Sandvik Tamrock Commando drills. Boulders hung-up within the drawbell are drilled and charged with a Sandvik Tamrock Secondary Breakage Unit. Compacted, fine-grained muck is blasted utilising 55 mm cartridge powder concussion bombs.

"Existence of anisotropic Curie temperature materials [E. R. Callen, Phys. Rev. 124, 1373 (1961); J. Appl. Phys. 32 S221 (1961)] is a longstanding prediction - materials that become paramagnetic at a lower temperature along certain crystal directions while remaining magnetically ordered in other directions up to a higher temperature. Validating Callen's theory, we show that all directions within the basal plane of monoclinic F e1Ss (pyrrhotite) single crystal remain ordered up to 603 K while the c-axis becomes paramagnetic at 225 K. Results prompt a re-evaluation of existing magnetic materials with a focus on magnetic characteristics along different crystal orientations above instead of below the ordering temperatures. Theoretical guidelines for identifying new materials with large anisotropy of Curie temperature are also given, and analysis protocol to characterize them in a self-consistent manner is discussed. Materials with such a large directional dependence of Curie temperature open the possibility for uniquely new devices and phenomena, including energy storage and spintronics devices.IntroductionThis paper is an overview of our recently published work on anisotropic Curie temperature materials [l]. As a background, ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials are characterized by a critical temperature below which magnetic interactions prevail over thermal agitation, leading to the appearance of a spontaneous magnetization. Above this critical point, called the Curie temperature, thermal energy eventually overcomes magnetic interactions and the material becomes paramagnetic.It is less well known that the Curie temperature varies with the orientation of the crystal. In ordinary ferromagnets this orientation dependence of Curie temperature is negligible because of the vanishingly small ratio of anisotropy to exchange energy, i.e., the spherical or isotropic exchange term dominates. Thus Curie temperature in ordinary ferromagnets appears to be an isotropic property, and assigning it a single characteristic ordering temperature suffices. However, a 'small' difference is not equivalent to being the 'same', and under appropriate set of conditions the anisotropy of Curie temperature is predicted to become appreciable, as discussed in the following.In formulating the theory of 'anisotropic magnetization' [2, 3] E. R. Callen and H. B. Callen first discussed the ""interesting possibility"" of anisotropic Curie temperature [2] or ACT; Callen and Callen noted that it was W. J. Carr, Jr. who initially raised this question, and they discussed it in detail at the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (NY, November 1960), see footnote on page 320 of Ref. [2]. Soon thereafter, E. R. Callen developed the theory underlying the anisotropy of Curie temperature and conditions conducive to its observation [4, 5]."

Calcium metal was found to deoxidize thorizcm at 1000° to 1200° C. The reaction kinetics were determilled and related to the diffusion coefficients of oxygen in thorium. The solubility of oxygen in thorium, the minimum oxygen concentration, and the diffusion coefficient were determined from 1000° to 1200°C. This firocess results in the lowest oxygen concentrations zohich have been reported for thorium metal. FOR many years it has been known that calcium metal will reduce thorium oxide to thorium metal. This reaction has been the basis for several methods of preparing thorium metal. From the equations giv-by Kubaschewski and vans, ' AF" for the reaction Cao, + Tho,(,) - CaO(,, + Th(,) was calculated and found to be -3.4 kcal at 1000°C, -2.5 kcal at llOO°C, and -2.0 kcal at 1200°c. Thorium is very slightly soluble in liquid calcium, and the solubility of calcium in solid thorium is very low. Consequently these metals would be in essentially their reference states. If thorium containing oxygen were equilibrated with liquid calcium between 1000° and 1200°C, the oxygen content of the thorium would have to be below the solubility limit in thorium. Oxygen is one of the impurities most difficult to remove from thorium and is the most abundant impurity in metal prepared by almost all known methods. Fortunately, oxygen does not have a large influence on the properties of thorium because the solubility in solid thorium is very low. EvenT in thorium containing 100 ppm of 0, particles of thorium oxide can be observed in the microstructure. In view of the incompatibility of thorium oxide and liquid calcium and the low solubility of thorium oxide in thorium, the deoxidation of thorium by this method was investigated. For thorium containing an amount of oxygen well in excess of the solubility limit, the reaction should proceed in the following sequence. The oxygen content of the thorium matrix near the surface would be depleted by the diffusion of oxygen to the surface. At the surface, the oxygen would react with calcium to form calcium oxide. To maintain equilibrium within the thorium, thorium oxide would dissolve to keep the matrix saturated. Consequently, the thorium-oxide particles would disappear first at the surface and then the particle-free rim would grow in thickness. If the rate-controlling step were the diffusion of oxygen through this layer of thorium which was growing in thickness in direct proportion to the amount of oxygen removed, the well known parabolic time law should be observed. If the oxygen concentration at the surface of the thorium and at the inner surface of the deoxidized rim were known, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in thorium could be calculated from the parabolic rate constant. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium metal used in this study was prepared by calcium reduction of ThF, by the method described by Wilhelm.' The analysis of this metal is given in Table I. The carbon was determined by combustion, the oxygen by the HC1-insoluble residue method, nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method, and the other elements by emission spectroscopy. A section of this ingot was hot rolled at 600°C to 1/4 and 1/8-in. thick plates. Specimens approximately 7/8 in. square were cut from these plates, and all surfaces of the specimens were cleaned and smoothed by filing with a clean file. Individual specimens were placed in 1-in. diam by 2-in.-long tantalum capsules. Approximately 1 g of clean, high-purity calcium was placed in the capsules and an end closure arc-welded in place. The tantalum capsules were sealed in Inconel crucibles to protect the reactive metals from oxidation. The entire loading procedure was done in a glove box filled with pure argon. The loaded crucibles were placed in a muffle furnace, controlled within 2OC of the desired temperature, for a measured length of time. After the specimen had cooled to room temperature, it was sectioned perpendicular to the large faces and through the mid-point of two of the sides. The sectioned specimen was mounted and polished through Linde A abrasive. The rim which was free of thorium-oxide particles could be clearly observed microscopically as mechanically polished. The Bureau of Mines studied the behavior of rocks at the initial state of crater formation that results from the stresses created under a drill bit to determine which mechanical properties of rock are important in rock fragmentation by drilling. Although a definite relation between the drilling strength and relevant mechanical properties has not been established, maximum yield strength of rock is apparently a parameter of drillability of rock. The strengths of rock were considered from the Mohr-Coulomb criterion from which the surface of failure was constructed. The results from previous tri-axial tests on Solenhofen limestone were adopted to verify the criterion of failure. Inelastic behavior of some rock types was observed under a low-velocity impact of a hemispherical bit and under static indentation with a similar bit. Quantitative determinations of strengths of Solenhofen limestone) Indiana limestone, and Tennessee marble were made under static indentation. The maximum yield strength estimated from the average stress over the indented area was used as the crushing strength of rock under a drill bit.

The Iron Prince orebody occurs within the Lower Middleback Jaspilite Horizon of the Middleback Group and consists of hematite within host rocks of jaspilites and schists. The ore was probably the product of leaching of silica from jaspilites and replacement by iron, concentrations occurring in suitable structural traps. The narrowness and the presence of extensive dolerite amphibolite dykes within the orebody make it essential to operate a grade control programme in advance of the faces. Information from drilling is drawn up on bench plans, step plans and impurity overlays, and these serve both in day to day production planning and in long term planning. Mining is done selectively by open-pit methods and blending conducted by keeping at least three faces of different grades of ore open at any one time. No stock piles of ore are kept for blending, but contact ore, contaminated ore and enriched material are dumped for later beneficiation.

"Regeneration of HCl from chloride solutions is commercially practiced by high temperature (800-900 °C) pyrohydrolysis associated with high energy consumption and capital cost. As an alternative to pyrohydrolysis a novel low temperature ( <200 °C) non-autoclave hydrolytic process has been studied in this research work, which comprises two steps. In the first step, ferrous chloride is oxidized by oxygen at 1;150 °C, followed by hydrolytic decomposition of ferric chloride to coarse hematite particles and superazeotropic hydrochloric acid (8-9M) operated at approximately 180 °C. This paper provides a summary of the laboratory results related to both oxidation and hydrolysis and presents a newly designed conceptual process flowsheet.IntroductionRecovery of base, noble and rare metals from ores and secondary materials (slags, dusts, residues) by chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes holds a lot of promise if a low cost HCl process becomes available. This is particularly so due to the high activity of HCl or more accurately activity of hydrogen ion [1] in concentrated chloride media and the formation of chlorocomplexes allowing for effective leaching under atmospheric leaching conditions and simultaneous ease of metal separation. However, during leaching significant amount of iron, which is associated with most of ores and secondary materials, goes into the solution. Hence, the obtained leach solution has to be treated to convert iron chlorides into easily filterable iron oxide and simultaneously produce concentrated hydrochloric acid. Apparently the critical operation of these processes is the regeneration of the lixiviant (HCl). Currently in the industry, its regeneration is accomplished by high capital and intensive pyrohydrolysis which operates at 700- 900 °C. Aimed at lowering the operational cost of pyrohydrolysis a process called PORI [2] was developed and tested in pilot plant scale in the 1970s for the purpose of treatment of pickle liquors without, however, resulting in industrial application."

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. The intermetallic compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb are two of the important series of stoichiometric compounds which magnesium forms with elements of the fourth group of the periodic system. Since there is a complete series of compounds, all possessing the same comparatively simple structure, a unique opportunity is presented to study their properties with respect to increasing atomic number of the anion as it varies from silicon and germanium, through tin and lead. The present work deals with the two lower members of this group, and it is hoped eventually that additional data regarding the silicide and germanide will be obtained. The results of such a complete study provide part of the essential basis for the empirical correlation and theoretical treatment which, in other systems, has contributed to an understanding of inter-metallic compounds and the metallic&apos;state in general. Some experimental data are already available in the literature. However, they are fragmentary and limited in significance owing to the methods of preparation employed and the impure materials available at the time. It was our objective, therefore, using pure metals and improved metallurgical methods of preparation, to produce stoichiometric compounds of high purity for the study of their electrical and chemical properties. We felt that a detailed investigation of chemical properties, about which relatively little is known, combined with electrical properties, would be a significant contribution to the understanding of these compounds and in particular to the mechanism of corrosion associated with types of bonding in alloy systems. The chemical studies are reported elsewhere. Previous Investigations Previous work concerning the electrical properties of these compounds was undertaken in connection with the establishment of the two phase diagrams which are available in Hansenl and Beck. The first comprehensive investigation of the electrical conductivity of magnesium-tin and magnesium-lead alloys was made by Kurnakov and Stepanov.3 This was followed by Grube and Voss-kiihler4 who studied electrical conductivity and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperature and who, unlike Stepanov, appreciated the significance of the large solid solubility of tin in magnesium and took some precautions to obtain an equilibrium state. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

As simpler and easier reserves are exploited to depletion, underground coal mining continues in more complex geologic settings and conditions. Roof bolting for long-term entry stability is always a challenge. For long-term entries of a mine such as belt, track entries and return airways, roof could be under-supported if one uses the same bolting plan as in short-term entries or even seem over-supported with increasing use of longer, stronger bolts along with mesh, pans, straps or trusses. In most underground coal mines, roof deteriorates over time with cutters developing deeper in entry corners; roof sagging and popping out between bolts; entry width increasing due to rib sloughage; and separations developing deeper up into the roof. In deteriorated long-term entries, roof falls could occur at certain locations and re-bolting could be costly or sometimes unfeasible. Therefore, it is important to choose an appropriate bolting plan during development based on mining and geologic conditions if the entries will be used for the long-term. In both short-term and long-term entries, primary roof bolting is critical in building a strong and effective beam. But in long-term entries, supplementary bolting is necessary in certain cases to ensure roof stability can still be maintained even if a roof failure develops beyond the primary bolted horizon. This paper deals with roof bolting for long-term entries based on studying the progressive roof failure and roof falls under different geologic conditions. The paper presents bolting considerations in terms of bolt type, length, diameter and spacing as well as bolting strategy to minimize the risk of roof falls in long-term entries.

Lying to the east of the Rio Grande, in central New Mexico, is a long N. and S. mountain range, broken into separate ridges at several points. These have received separate names; the mountains at the south end, near El Paso, being known as the Franklin mountains, and then, following successively, to the north, the San Andreas range, Sierra Oscura, Manzano and Sandia mountains. At the eastern base of the Sierra Oscura there are several low ridges, remarkable for their red color. All of these red ridges contain reefs of copper-ore. The eastern flanks of the Sierra Oscura are composed of limestone. Some fossils in the limestone were examined by Prof. J. P. Smith of Stanford University, who says they are Fusulina and indicate an Tipper Carboniferous age. The sandstones and shales containing the copper-reefs directly overlie this limestone (Fig. I), and are very likely of Permian age, like the similar beds in Texas, described by Mr. W. F. Cummins.* Overlying the copper-beds are red sandstones and shales in which very little copper has been found. The cupriferous zone and the red sandstones and shales are everywhere associated, and as one stands on a high point, he will see that these rocks form three main belts or lines of hills. These may be referred to as the northern, middle and southern belts. The northern belt was not visited by me, but is known to contain copper-deposits. The middle belt has a trend of N. of W. and S. of E. The copper-reefs have been traced for a distance of more than 2 miles. The southern belt has a trend of about N. 30&apos; W. and S. 30°

"Two rapid solidification processes for 304 stainless steel were studied: centrifugal atomization (CA) in a helium atmosphere and atomization by exposing argon-containing melt to vacuum (VGA). Positron annihilation and x-ray line broadening measurements of explosively consolidated monoliths were used to clarify microhardness measurements as a function of annealing temperature. Interesting differences in positron response between CA and VGA materials are ascribed to more carbide formation in the CA material than in the VGA material in the 600 0C range. In addition, hot isostatic pressing of the CA material was examined as to the relations between mechanical behavior, pore shape, and relative density. A variable stress concentration factor is introduced into the theory to allow for changing pore shape as relative density increases.IntroductionThere are many potential advantages of rapid solidification processing (RSP), such as a high degree of matrix supersaturation, finely dispersed microstructures, improved chemical homogeneity, and retention of metastable phases, which have been studied extensively. To consolidate rapidly solidified material which is in powder form into useful shapes often requires subjecting the material to elevated temperature for extended periods of time under mechanical forces, as in hot isostatic pressing or hot extrusion. In such cases, some of the characteristics of the rapid-cooling step can be strongly affected. An alternative is dynamic consolidation (1), for example by explosive forming, where the time frame at least is extremely short.In the present work, effects of the consolidation processes of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and explosive forming in a die are examined. The particular material is 304 stainless steel. The characteristics of both RS and VGA 304 stainless-steel powders were described by Wright, Flinn, and Korth (2) earlier."
