Novel solvent extraction technologies in recent decades have made attempts to show the problems in applying this method for dilute solutions and find appropriate solutions to overcome them. Improving the equipments performance used in this method for dilute solutions, cause development of usable resources and reduction of operational costs. Furthermore, appropriate conditions provide for using dilute solutions produced in various industries as a new source of valuable elements. Thus, this proposal can be a very good solution for treatment of these solutions and reduce the environmental impacts associated with them. The purpose of this study is to introduce a new method of Column Floto Extraction (CFE), which has been invented in this regard. In this method, using spargers similar to Jameson cell downcomer in floatation process, the organic phase bubble dispersion has been used instead of its drop dispersion in aqueous phase for the two-phase mixture operation. This operation mode has caused a higher extraction percentage of solute in high aqueous to organic ratios due to enhancement of contact area. In this study, in addition to explaining the advantages and features of this method, we have dealt with its design and performance mode.

"Predicting the performance of plant-scale comminution circuits is essential to monitor the energy use and product size distribution, allowing us to control and optimize the whole process. In the light of this issue, with the assist of recent technologies, simulation techniques utilize the chance of putting the theory into practice in the most accurate way. For this purpose, this study aims to evaluate and optimize the efficiency of a plant-scale ball mill circuit by using perfect-mixing ball mill model on a simulation environment. The comminution circuit is selected from a specific copper-ore processing plant in Turkey. The essential parameters which are required for this study such as fresh feed Bond work index, size distribution etc. are determined by laboratory experiments. The forecasted data which are calculated by third-party software will be compared by the industrial operating data, in order to determine the performance of comminution circuit. In addition to that, this methodology provides a greater ability to analyse, optimize and understand the comminution circuit of ore treatment plant. The authors believe this work will provide supplementary data for further studies on simulation and subsequent optimization of comminution circuits.INTRODUCTION By the assist of mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers, simulation of the grinding circuits become more common in comminution because it is relatively economical and able to consider many variables simultaneously. It’s proceeds depends on the accuracy of the models and capability of reflect real operations. Computer-based simulation studies would provide the quantified information about the effects of the proposed changes on the comminution circuit performance in terms of size distribution, mass flow rates, equipment efficiency etc. Then the mentioned data used in order to check the suitability of the current equipment to the modified conditions, and for equipment selection. The outputs of circuit could also be used to estimate downstream flotation circuit performance because the general aim in this study is to The aim of the study is to investigate optimum operating variables and achieve p(80) size of 57 µm and 64 % of -36 µm particle in hydrocyclone overflow stream, which is optimum for that porphyritic copper ore for best concentrate recovery after flotation process in specific copper ore comminution circuit by using modelling and simulation techniques. Sampling survey was carried on the fine ore bin in order to perform Bond work index test and determine work index value (Wi). Thereafter mass balancing, using the size distribution data and tonnages, models for ball mills and hydrocyclone were developed. This paper develops the themes explored by the authors at the Fourth International Platinum Conference,. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: > An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated > An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter, and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets > An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated > An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the owner's team.

The new process consists of the selective coalescence of fine hematite particles by fine magnetite. The gangue minerals are dispersed by some dispersant; thus it can be separated by desliming. This process is particularly suitable for fine-grained hematite/magnetite-type deposits.

The hematite deposits of Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) are hosted by the Proterozoic itabirites of the Itabira iron formation (Harder and Chamberlin, 1915). These deposits are widely distributed at QF and include the hard hematite ore bodies. However, considerable variations in ore structure and texture can be observed. A preserved banding and lamination in the thin bedded, compact hematite ore, apparently reflects the original layering and/or the prominent foliation of the partly or completely replaced itabirite. The structure of the hematite ore deposits varies from almond shaped, rootless, to bedded bodies, both concordant with the main foliation, and to mesoscopic veins and irregular bodies. Hematite ore textures, which depends on the structural characteristics of the deposit, may be grouped into four main types:thin bedded, laminated and banded; micaceous, foliated and schistose; brecciated; and compact/massive. Thin bedded ores occur in the western, central and subordinately eastern portions of QF, while submicaceous, micaceous and schistose ores are predominant at the eastern part. Brecciated ores exist mainly at the western part and subordinately in central QF. Structureless, compact hematite ores may be either related to the brecciated hematite or occur as isolated bodies at central QF. It is suggested that a synkinematic, acid and oxidant, metasomatism during metamorphism, under a ductile regime, was responsible for the hard hematite ores of the types 1 and 2, and a static, subsequent, hydrothermal, regional metasomatism, under brittle regime resulted in the formation of the types 3 and 4. The common texture present in the all ores is the ubiquitous magnetite porphyroclasts replacement by hematite. Quartz and other silicate minerals are also substituted by hematite. Muscovite, tourmaline, talc, chlorite, apatite and kaolinite have been recognised in the hard hematitic ores. Apparently that mineral association denotes different equilibrium conditions of formation.

This investigation was done to develop a method to predict the lie of coal pillars. It has long since been known that coal pillars deteriorate over time, but there was no method to quantify the deterioration. It was found that the rate of pillar deterioration was essentially a function of two parameters, namely mining height and time. The higher the mining height, the more rapidly the pillars deteriorated. The rate of deterioration is not constant, but decreases exponentially with time. The pillar life should be viewed in conjunction with the safety factor. While the relationship between safety factor and pillar life is ambiguous, the trend is nonetheless for higher safety factor pillars to have longer lives. The safety factor can be used to quantify a failure probability. The pillar life prediction indicates when the pillars which are predicted to fail, can be expected to do so.

There is much ongoing work in research and development of new processes for the recovery and recycling of met.a.ls and other materials from various waste and scrap streams. Commercialization of such new technologies requires the bringing together and successful execution of a considerable effort involving a variety of activities. These include process conceptualization, research and development, detailed design and construction, and then plant startup and operation. Processes evolve through all of these steps by engineering due diligence, making objective and critical analyses of results, and troubleshooting processing steps to, hopefully, arrive at a sequence that has the best chance to succeed operationally and economically. After a summary review of the above steps, several processes will be described in more detail that provide mostly successful examples of the above procedures. Finally, some observations will be made on areas that will become critical in the near future to the success of new processes for wastes and residues.

IT has been ascertained in recent years that certain rocktypes, geological formations and structural conditions may be used as fairly reliable guides, when prospecting in recognized mineral belts or mining districts, with a reasonable certainty of discovering "pay-ore;" and that such is considered as a practically established conclusion may be inferred from a perusal of the recent reports of the U. S. Geological Survey and the literature of the several scientific societies discussing minim, geology, and kindred subjects. Cripple Creek is no exception to this conclusion, and the rock-type or association, rather than the structural condition, is the most infallible guide.† These guides consist of four, possibly five, dike-rocks, three of which are extremely basic, while the fourth is an acid rock of an entirely dissimilar character. The basic rocks are nepheline-basalt, limburgite, feldspar-basalt and tephrite. There are grounds, however, for believing that the two latter are subdivisions of one type, and therefore will be described under one head. The acid rock is quartz-porphyry. Nepheline-basalt is-a rock encountered in but few localities elsewhere on this continent, and occurs in narrow dikes cutting various formations. When typical‡ it is composed of

Historically, the treatment of orebodies for recovery of valuable constituents presents many processing challenges. In a time of heightened environmental awareness, the constraints placed on processing complex orebodies are becoming more and more pronounced. As such, established technologies are limited in their ability to fill the needs of these emerging sources of raw materials. A prime example of this is in processing PGMs from primary sources. Normally, this type of material is found in a nickel-copper-iron sulfide matrix. Typically, these materials are processed by established pyrometallurgical means. However, other options should be considered. Hydrometallurgical processes are available which offer advantages over pyrometallurgical methods. One of these is the nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach used industrially by Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. In 1990, laboratory work was undertaken in cooperation with Stillwater Mining Company to test PGM matte materials from the Columbus, Montana smelter. The initial results were very positive, and they led to a design to recover PGMs in a high grade residue and to recover nickel and copper as valuable products. Handling the iron and other wastes in an environmentally safe manner was also successfully investigated.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center's 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."' The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.

The conditions under which vanadium is rendered insoluble by silica in the alkali-roast process have been investigated starting with both slag and reagent-grade materials. The inert phase is a glass formed slowlyfrom soluble NaV03 produced at lower temperatures. It contains approximately 30 per cent V in a partly reduced state; iron is not a principal component. Some of the vanadium in the inert phase is slowly returned to a soluble form by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere below the temperature at which the glass is formed (750°C). As the reaction leading to the required, soluble form of vanadium is also slow between 600 and 750° optimization and control of the temperature profile and atmosphere in the furnace, and the residence time of the solids, are necessary to ensure high vanadium extraction during subsequent leaching.

This paper attempts to analyze the phenomena involved in the fracture of brittle solids by simple compression. Glass squares standing on edge, and compressed between two parallel steel jaws, developed jagged fractures, roughly parallel to the compression. Polarized light disclosed the presence of high local stress concentrations indicating poor contact all along the contact surfaces with the steel jaws. Teszar has shown that partial contact between the jaws and such a compressed solid causes tensile stresses in the free surfaces of the solid normal to the compression. Furthermore, Scoble has shown that in brittle solids fractures are caused by, and develop normally to, a sufficient tensile stress. It follows that such "partial-contact" cracks must be expected. With optically flat jaws and specimens, no "partial-contact" cracks developed. Instead, very smooth cracks vertical to the compression appeared 'upon release of the pressure. Investigation showed that the friction with the rigid steel opposed the return of the glass to its original width, after creeping on the steel as compression built up, thus setting up tensile stresses in the glass surfaces. It was not found possible to eliminate these "release" cracks. Compressed to destruction, such specimens flew to dust. A Microflash photograph taken during the explosive disintegration revealed: (I) oblique parallel fragmentation cracks, 30" off the direction of the compression; (2) transverse forking fragmentation cracks, normal to the former; (3) release cracks parallel to the compression; (4) a disintegration cloud. Given a distribution of submicroscopic cracks of random orientation throughout the glass, Griffith has shown the highest tensile stresses to be located at the tip of the cracks 30" off the direction of the compression. Although the preexistence of such cracks or flaws in unstressed glass is doubtful, they can be generated by the distorting forces set up by the compression itself. Atoms, in a structure held together by Morse-type forces or bonds, have under tension both a stable and an unstable state-of equilibrium. The difference in energy level between these two states is a function of the tension, and this difference must be borrowed from the thermal energy level of the bonds to reach the unstable state and result in a broken bond. As the fraction of the bonds having at any instant a sufficient thermal energy level is a known function of that level, it is possible to determine, in function of the prevailing tension, the fraction of the bonds that are broken. A simple model for hydrocyclone classification based on the crowding theory first put forward by Fahlstrom is presented. This is a mechanistic theory that postulates that the behaviour of a hydrocyclone is the result of an ordered process that is independent of its dimensions. The main variables that describe the process are the fractions of feed solids and water that are ejected from the underflow. A simple model is developed from basic properties of the classification process and is compared with theory. Agreement is good but improves when the cyclone has a high solids content

A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The design of belt conveyors is a well-known procedure and related formulae can be found in any handbook dealing with materials handling. Belting and conveying equipment manufacturer's catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of our conveying problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the design of a specific type of belt conveyor, namely the long horizontal, or nearly horizontal, type. (The undulating type, with moderate lifts and drops, can also be included in this category.) Most of the long overland conveyors carrying ore from pit to processing plant, or those carrying over-burden to the disposal area, fit this description. A critical appraisal will show that reasonably accurate results can be obtained when tl1e familiar horse-power formulae are applied to this type of conveyor. The progress and new developments in the design of belt conveyors, which have resulted from the extensive research done in the past decade, will also be explored.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.

THE practical study of corrosion requires consideration off its economic aspects. It must be based on sound scientific principles, but it should be borne in mind that probably the most important object of a corrosion test is to determine what metal in corrosion-resisting construction will produce the greatest operating profit. Thus the corrosion test must be directly connected with money values or it is not a practical corrosion test. This, perhaps unusual, connection between corrosion and economics is partially due to the fact that corrosion deals only with the time factor or duration of equipment, and it is almost the only test which deals with this feature. In these statements a departure is made from the academic definition of the word corrosion and it is done deliberately. The use of the term corrosion is unusual. It is as though we spoke of a tensile test as. a "breaking" test. We are not interested primarily in the break but in the strength of the metal. There is no English word which expresses our main interest in corrosion-testing, but let us have clearly in mind that we make corrosion tests to prevent corrosion. Our real interest is in this corrosion-prevention, not in the corrosion. Previous to 1922, it was common comment that "it is impossible to determine the course of corrosion by laboratory testing." This statement was true at that time in that the technique of laboratory testing for corrosion resistance was so vague that tests in the laboratory gave untrue results almost as often as true ones. This was so, even in the simple case of determining which one of two metals better resists a given solution. While this is no longer true the number of misleading "corrosion tests" still being ground out by laboratories is too large in the light of our present knowledge. There are two important features of corrosion testing whose neglect is a large contributing factor to misleading results: (1) The economic relations of the corrosion tests to other tests; (2) testing technique.
