The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. One of Society’s major concerns with hydrometallurgical processing is the large amount of water that is quintessential to its nature. This is especially troubling in arid areas, where the population struggles to procure potable water for their daily needs. For that reason, it has become our responsibility to conceive, design and implement processing schemes that not only use as little water as possible, but recycle streams within the plant itself and minimize waste that exits its perimeter. With this in mind, the conference will center on the importance of selecting the appropriate chemical systems and integrating material balances to avoid reagent overkill and to detect impurity accumulation. The three “R’s” (reuse, recycle and recovery) of aqueous solutions within the processes are emphasized. Examples of processes for the recovery of lead, copper, precious and PG metals from minerals and waste materials will be presented.

Stabilization of arsenic via the precipitation of large-sized scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) particles usually involves the use of expensive autoclave systems operated under high temperature and pressure conditions. Alternatively, DOWA developed a novel scorodite synthesis process (DMSP®) wherein the Fe(II) ions in solution containing As(V) ions were oxidized by O2 gas under atmospheric pressure. In this process, crystalline scorodite particles were formed via the formation of a gel-like precursor containing Fe(II). Based on this concept, in this study, we have demonstrated the synthesis of scorodite particles by the addition of Fe(III)-containing solution to the experimental solution containing Fe(II) and As(V) ions, without the O2 gas oxidation process. Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) was used as the source of Fe(III) ions. Results indicate the precipitation of scorodite particles, comparable to that of the O2 gas oxidation method.

The paper presents correlations of (l) molar volume of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures with pressure, temperature, composition and properties of the C,-plus fraction; (2) shrinkage of oils during flash and differential liberation of gas, including the calculation of formation volume factor under various conditions; and (3) bubble-point pressure with temperature, composition and characteristics of C, plus. The data on which the correlations are based comprise 1,615 measurements on 900 hydrocarbon systems, including numerous systems containing nitrogen, hydrogen sul-fide and carbon dioxide. In each correlation, the number of data points covered and the accuracy is substantially greater than in previously available work. Thus, the equation yielding molar volumes of gases has an average deviation of 2.04 per cent, applied to mixtures having temperatures up to 313F and pressures up to 9,800 psis, compared to 2.37 per cent for the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation applied to the same data, and 4.53 per cent for the method based on the law of corresponding states. he equations resented are all explicit in the dependent variable, and require no iteration on the digital cow puter. INTRODUCTION The ease and accuracy of determining the composition of hydrocarbon mixtures, compared to the difficulty of measuring their properties under reservoir conditions, makes it desirable to utilize composition as the key to physical behavior to the greatest possible extent. As a result, there are available correlations between composition, or easily measured characteristics dependent on composition, and practically every important engineering property of reservoir fluids. The task confronting us is one of finding more exact relationships between important variables rather than extending correlations to new properties. This paper describes new correlations of molar volumes of gases, formation volume factors, and bubble-point pressures with composition, temperature and where possible, pressure. Each correlation is obtained by employing a sufficiently large amount of data so the calculated properties are probably as least as accurate as the measurement on which they are based. MOLAR VOLUME OF GASES Although many equations of state have been proposed for pure gases, only a few methods are applicable to hydrocarbons at conditions comparable to those in petroleum reservoirs. Still fewer arc useful in describing the behavior of mixtures, with which the petroleum engineer is largely concerned. The correlation presented here involves procedures similar to those of Alani and Kennedy The van der Waals equation is modified to make a and b functions of temperature instead of being constants for each material.This is a cubic equation, which may have either one or three real roots. The lowest root corresponds to liquid volume, while the highest applies to gas. When the procedure was applied to 703 pressure-temperature points of 164 gases of known composition and volume, the average deviation was 12.08 per cent, and the standard deviation 8.15. The above calculations were made using the constants derived for liquids by Alani and Kennedy and the mixture equation developed by them. A closer approximation to measured molar volumes is obtained by employing different sets of constants for different areas on the pressure-temperature chart, and by changing the relationship between a,,, and b,,, for mixtures and the a, and b, for individual hydrocarbons. The various sets are shown in Table 1, and the areas for which they are recommended are plotted in Figs. 1 through 7. In these figures, the area designated by zero is in the critical region for pure materials, and the values obtained for them may be unreliable. With the removal of the majority of the shallow mineral reserves there has been an increase in the mining depths in the South African mining industry. This has, in turn, changed the industry?s and stakeholders? perceptions of risk associated with mining-induced instability. In recent years the increased mining depth, particularly in open pits, has led to an increase in pit slope failures, which has highlighted the need for appropriate and effective pit slope management programmes. Such a programme comprises many facets, including mine hazard plans, regular slope inspections, cleaning of interim and final pit faces, blasting practices, histories of failures, pit depressurization, stormwater control and evacuation procedures. However, it is arguably in the field of slope monitoring that the most significant strides have been made in terms of new technologies and best practice in open pit mining geotechnics, with the introduction of technologies such as laser scanners and slope stability radar. This paper seeks to illustrate the operational benefits associated with the implementation of new technologies into open pit mining, using AngloGold Ashanti?s Geita Gold Mine in Tanzania as an example.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

The iron-ore beneficiation and shiploading facilities of the Marcona Mining Company are at San Nicolas Bay which is on the Peruvian coastal desert about two hundred and seventy miles south of Lima. The mines are at elevation of 2,500 ft. Crude ore is transported from the Mine primary crushers to the beneficiation plants by ten miles of overland belt conveyors. After the predominantly magnetic ore is reduced to minus 3/4 in. in the secondary crushing plant, the ore is ground by rod and ball mills and concentrated with magnetic separators. The concentrate slurry is pumped to a thickening and filtering installation for desliming and dewatering. Pelletizing is accomplished with a Lurgi and also a Dravo-Lurgi machine. Deep-water shiploading facilities are available close to the beneficiation plants. Figure 1 shows a flowsheet of the general operation. Pelletizing operations are scheduled 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. A maximum tonnage rate with a high percentage of operating time is necessary to produce the three and one half million tons per year required from the two pellet lines. Process control is a major responsibility and of primary concern to all Operating personnel. The particle size, moisture, and chemical composition of the filter cake must be closely controlled to get uniform high-grade pellets. Key points are sampled routinely and analyzed on a two-hour basis to provide the necessary structure and chemical data to maintain a superior final product. The iron content of the pellets is held between 65.3 and 65.8 percent with 4.0 percent Si02. Sulfur is below 0.04 percent and copper is below 0.02 percent in the finished pellet.

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. Drilling activity increased in Illinois in 1935. There were 34 com-pletions as compared with 26 in 1934 and 18 wells were drilling at the end of 1935. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. The mining town of Pribram is situated in Central Bohemia, on the western slope of the Heiliger Berg. 30 miles southwest from Prague. Birkenberg, the village ill which most of the shafts and ore-dressing establishments are situated, is built on a mountain of the same name. It is about a mile from Pribram, is 1700 feet above the sea, and is surrounded by graywacke rocks of Silurian origin, which arc intersectd by greenstone dikes, and in the southerly, southeasterly, arid southwesterly direction are bounded by granite. The graywacke formations consist on one side of graywacke sandstone and quartzite, and on the other of graywacke slate. These last are separated from the first in the immediate vicinity of the mines by a graywacke seam converted into clay. For many years this so-called clay seam (lettenkluft) was considered as a boundary of the ore deposits in both zones of graywacke. The graywacke formation L divided according to its harduess, structure, texture, and color, into fine, coarse, compact, slaty, whitish-gray, reddish-gray, and black graywacke. The miner divides the formation into four divisions. The first or lowest division, which is in contact with the granite, consists of a fine-grained dirty gray slate; the -second is a very fine to a very coarse schist, white to reddish-gray in color, and rich in quartz, but containing little mica; the third consists of a slate with a confused cleavage, which has a dirty gray, dark gray, and very often black color and is often graphitic in its composition; the fourth consists of a fine to coarse-grained graywacke schist, of a grayish-white or reddish-gray color, and rich in quartz. The cleavage in all four divisions strikes from northeast to southwest, and the dip is sometimes northwesterly, sometimes southerly, and often vertical. The split-lining structure was newly developed for the air-tight lining of the underground compressed air storage cavern. This structure consists of separated reinforced concrete (RC) segments and air-tight membrane. It is most important for the Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine (CAES-G/T) system to develop the economical lining. In order to verify the applicability of split-lining structure, CAES-G/T pilot plant was constructed and operated for 6 months. We confirmed the practical usefulness and safety of this system through the operation. This paper presents the mechanical behaviour of surrounding rock mass and the lining structure observed through the operation of CAES-G/T pilot plant. Nous avons mis au point une structure de revêtement modulaire pour le revêtement des cavernes souterraines hermétiques à pression. Ce revêtement est composé de segments de béton armé et de membranes hermétiques. Il était très important, pour le CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine), de développer un revêtement économique. Afin de vérifier l’aptitude d’application de notre revêtement modulaire, nous avons construit un système pilote CAES-G/T et nous avons effectué des essais de fonctionnement pendant six mois. Ces essais nous ont permis de confirmer l’utilité et la sécurité du système. A travers le présent rapport, nous rendons compte de la structure de ce nouveau type de revêtement et du comportement mécanique de la masse rocheuse environnante que nous avons pu observer au cours desdits essais. Als luftdichter Druckbehälter wurde eine gegliederte Belagsstruktur für tief unterirdisch liegende Felshöhlungen entwickelt. Diese Struktur ist aus Stahlbetonabdeckung und luftdichter Plane aufgebaut. Bei der Entwicklung des Pressluftgasturbinen – Stromerzeugungssystems (CAES-G/T) war es die wichtigste Aufgabe, einen wirtschaftlichen Belag zu entwickeln. Deswegen wurde zum Nachweis der Effektivität der gegliederten Belagsstruktur eine Pilotanlage errichtet und 6 Monate lang betrieben. Durch den Betrieb konnten wir die Praktikabilität und Sicherheit des Systems bestätigen. Dieser Aufsatz ist ein Bericht über das Verhalten der durch Betrieb der CAES-G/T Pilotanlage beobachteten Belagsstruktur und umliegenden Felsmasse.

The formation behavior and corrosion characteristics of anodic oxide films on pure Mg and Mg-AI alloys were investigated focusing on the effects of anodizing potential, Al content, temperature and NaOH concentration. Pure Mg and Mg-AI alloys were anodized for 10 min at 3, 10, 40, and 80 V in NaOH solutions. Mg(OH)2 was generated by an active dissolution reaction at the surface of the specimen and the product was affected by temperature while MgO generation increased with NaOH concentration. A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. THIS paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. MUSCOVITE MICA Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. THE MICA PROBLEM Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualities, beginning with the best quality: I. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. Fair Stained (FS). 3. Good Stained (GS). 4. Stained (S). 5. Heavy Stained (HS). 6. Black Spotted. The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 by an act of Congress and subsequently directed to: "...conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste ..." Under this broad charter, the Bureau's responsibilities have changed and grown from an almost exclusive concern with coal and coal mine safety to the present emphasis on a full spectrum of mineral producing and consuming problems. In the past 30 years, the domestic consumption of coal, oil, gas, metals, and industrial minerals has more than quadrupled, in parallel with the rapid and enormous growth in industrial production. Of the scores of metals and nonmetals essential to the Nation's progress and security, many are scarce and difficult to wrest from domestic sources. Reserves of some ores are dwindling. Available ore resources are becoming leaner and more difficult to treat. In recognition of this many faceted problem, the Bureau has engaged in a continuing quest for new and improved technology to enable economic exploitation of marginal minerals and fuels, to find substitutes for minerals in short supply, and to create better materials to meet the expanding and diverse requirements of the growing economy. The current central concern of the Bureau is focused on meeting projected fuel, metal, and mineral demands at the lowest real cost by recovery from available resources by new and improved technology that minimizes waste, hazards, and social and environmental problems.

Although the technology involved in removing material from below the earth's surface has a long history, communication systems in underground workings are relatively new to the industry. Communication equipment did not begin appearing in underground mines until the early 1900's. Figure 1-1 shows a miner using a Western Electric standard telephone set for underground mines in 1913. These early phones were essentially the same as those used aboveground, except that they were enclosed in cast-iron boxes as protection against moisture, acid fumes, and gases.

This paper discusses a long range mine plan development at the Santa Fe Pacific Gold Twin Creeks Mine based on the reserves of Mega pit. The key constraints of the schedule development included two types of mill ore targets (sulphide and oxide mill ore), consideration of blending of six chemical constituents (sulphide sulphur, carbonate, organic carbon, the ratio of iron/[arsenic, antimony]), and mining of acid generating and acid neutralizing waste at pre-defined proportions. Solution approaches, selected results, and project experiences are discussed.
