"Over the past 15 years, technical innovations have improved the properties and performance of monolithic refractories. As these improvements have occurred, aluminum cast-house refractory selections have changed from brick to monolithic refractories supplied as either cast in place, or precast, ""Big-Block"" installations. A review of the properties of monolithic and brick refractories is presented, as well as the technical advantages of brick for highly demanding applications. Operating conditions and issues such as temperature, alloying, corundum growth and other variables are also reviewed."

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Since (z - z1.v) = rll.ei, we note that the potential + has the proper logarithmic behavior near the two wells, while the stream function $ varies with the angle, decreasing clockwise around the production well and increasing clockwise around the injection well. The functions K(m) and K'(tn), related by K(m) = K'(m,), where m + m, = 1, are known as the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. By use of other properties of the Jacobian elliptic functions, the general stream function distribution for the staggered line drive can be obtained from Eq. 1: From the Jacobian elliptic function values, sn(0lm) = 0 dn(O(m) = cn(0jm) = 1, and f[K'(m)Iml = 03, it follows that the stream function given by Eq. 2 satisfies the proper symmetry conditions near a production well P located at [K(m), 01 and an injection well I located at [0, K' (m)]. That is, the line IOP in Fig. 1 is a streamline with value G (0. 0) = -0. and the straight lines connecting I and P to the point [K(m), K' (m)] is a streamline of value $[K(m), K' (m)] = -7/2. Similar symmetry conditions are obtained near other wells. It should be nuled that for m = m1, = 0.5, Eq. 2 reduces to the stream function distribution of the regular five-spot given in Ref. 7. SHAPE OF THE BREAKTHROUGH STREAMLINE It is apparent, from symmetry considerations, that the breakthrough streamline ($,) passes through the point [K(m)/2, K' (m)/2]. Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. The overall VTVs (back-on only, Fig. 2B) showed significantly higher accelerations as compared to both the back-on and back-off seat pan point VTVs (Figs. 2A &

Introduction I am indebted for most of the information in this paper to Mr. P. S. Lea, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines of Great Britain, and Mr. A. E. Crook, Engineering Inspector of Mines, Ministry of Fuel and Power. Other coal-mining men in Canada may be as surprised as I was to learn that there are twenty-five Diesel locomotives in service underground in British gassy coal mines. Many more are in use underground in non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Approval has been granted for an additional fifty flame-proof locomotives to be used in gassy mines, and these should be in operation by the end of 1946, or as soon as manufacturing facilities permit.

Votorantim Metals Corporation is one of the leader companies in the extraction of zinc in Brazil. One of its mines, located in the city of Vazante - MG, was composed by zinc silicate ores, but recent studies have indicated a change in mineralization type with arise of zinc sulphide’s ore bodies with disseminations of galena (PbS) and silver. The liberation size between sphalerite and galena in this ore occurs in very fine granulometry (approximately 18µm), fact that has negatively influenced into the flotation process. Aiming to reduce this problem, studies about the use of dispersing in the flotation process have started. Thus, this study investigated the action of different reagents dispersing on the stability of the suspensions. The tests were carried out with samples of mineral galena and sphalerite using four types of dispersing within two different dosages and two pH. The reagents tested were sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethiylcellulose, and sodium polyacrylate. The results of the dispersion tests were analysed in relation to dispersion index. The tests with hexametaphosphate showed high dispersion for both galena and sphalerite. The sodium polyacrylate and arboxymethiylcellulose showed a high dispersion index for galena and a low index for sphalerite implying that reagent can be used in the concentration process of galena.

"One phase of the Bureau of Mines' work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To promote the development of such devices the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus3/ gas masks/, supplied-air respirators5/ (hose masks, airline respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), and mechanical-filter respirators6/.Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules.As a prerequisite to such submittal, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been subjected to inspections and tests such as described in the schedules, and that it met those requirements when tested by the manufacturer or his testing agency; and a. statement regarding the nature, adequacy, and continuity of control of the quality of the respirator. If the manufacturer can satisfy these requirements, and if the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets its requirements, a certificate of approval is granted by the Bureau of Mines. The approved devices bear distinguishing marks that indicate that they have been approved, the purpose for which they are approved, and the limitations of their use. If it is found at any time that approved devices purchased in the oven market and tested do not meet the requirements of the schedule, the Bureau may rescind that approval. Lists7/ of approved devices are published periodically for the convenient information of the public.Respiratory equipment may be divided into two main groups: (1). Those that afford protection by removing atmospheric contaminants and (2) those by which a respirable atmosphere from an uncontaminated source is supplied to the wearer.The devices that protect by the removal of contaminants may be divided into two subgroups: (1) Those that protect against gaseous contaminants and (2) those that protect against particulate matter. There may, of course, be combinations of these two.The devices by which a respirable atmosphere is furnished to the wearer also may be divided into two subgroups: (1) The self-contained type, by which the supply of oxygen, or material from which the oxygen can be generated is carried by the wearer, and (2) the hose type, by which air is supplied to the wearer through a hose or tube."

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

A flow-sheet for waste-less processing of spent lead batteries comprises mechanized separation of batteries, smelting of the metallic fraction in a kettle, electrothermal smelting of oxysulfate fraction, refining of crude lead and processing of reverts to produce commercial products. Smelting of lead-containing fraction is performed in an electrothermal furnace using a processing technology developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute and differing from conventional processes by the fact that it does not require any fluxing agent (soda); no matte is formed in the process and the amount of slag produced is minimal, because its formation depends only on the ash content of coke and the quality of battery scrap separation. The process has been patented. It has been introduced on a commercial scale in 1.8 MVA furnaces at the plant of A0 "RyazTsvetmet" (Ryazan, Russia). The process has the following main advantages as compared with conventional shaft-furnace smelting and smelting in a short-drum furnace: the process does not require technical-grade oxygen, the amount of process gas generated is minimized ensuring a decrease in lead-containing dust and sulfur dioxide emissions by 3 to 5 times per unit of lead recovered; a decrease in dust entrainment resulting in lower amounts of recycled dust; lower slag yield (a decrease from 20-25% to 3-5%); lower coke requirement (a decrease from 10-14% to 3-4%). Refining of crude lead is performed using conventional technology but there are several unique features for which know-how is available. Processing of by-products of electrothermal smelting and secondary lead refining (slag, drosses, skimmings) and ebonite fraction (crushed battery casings) is performed in a slag-fuming furnace.

Afghanistan&apos;s mineral industry continued to be dominated by the production and export of natural gas, although several mining and related industrial projects, all under the supervision of Soviet technicians, were in the planning stage in 1982. Afghanistan produced minor quantities of barite, cement, coal, fertilizer materials, iron, and lapis lazuli, all for domestic consumption.2 Large-scale projects being investigated were a copper mine and concentrating plant at Ainak, extensive mining of the Hajigak iron ore deposit near Kabul, construction of an oil refinery at Angot, increasing production and processing of natural gas, and implementing an intensive geologic prospecting and exploration program for areas of mineral potential. Afghanistan&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at $2.76 billion3 and has remained stagnant for the past several years. Total exports in 1982 were estimated at $700 million, only a marginal increase from the 1981 figure of $694 million. Exports of natural gas to the U.S.S.R. earned $385 million in 1982, representing just over one-half of Afghanistan&apos;s total exports. Natural gas revenues were down approximately 11% from the 1981 level, owing primarily to increased antigovernment activity in the northern part of the country.4 About 90% of the country&apos;s natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R.5 About 38% of Afghanistan&apos;s development budget had been earmarked for mining and industrial projects in 1982.6

LOG washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate com-pletely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5° to 10° and into which the material is fed. Most igneous rocks, and particularly those of the basic type, contain relatively high percentages of magnetite and other iron oxides, which give them moderately high magnetic susceptibilities and make them responsible for an important percentage of the magnetic anomalies observed during the course of geophysical surveys by the magnetic method. The irregular form and high susceptibility of the igneous rocks make them readily polarizable and the position and strength of the magnetic poles formed are not always explicable by theoretical calculations of anomalies due to certain assumed forms in the normal magnetic field of the area under study. During the last four years our field work has permitted us to make detailed observations of anomalies due to igneous rocks in all the states of south Brazil. The form and position of the igneous rock at some places were fairly accurately known, which made it possible to calculate theoretical anomalies and compare them with the observed data. Some of the data we obtained have been published and additional cases are now awaiting publication. In this paper, we will present a few specific cases where the geology is moderately well known and which we believe to be of considerable value as representing typical magnetic anomalies in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the inclination of the magnetic field is very low. Although the vertical intensity is negative in the Southern Hemisphere, we have adopted the convention of plotting increase in intensity (negative) as a positive anomaly; i.e., above the x axis. This convention facilitates comparison with anomalies in the north.

The paper describes the development and analysis of an instability database to establish a new method of slope stability assessment for U.K. surface coal mines. The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

Most statistical and geostatistical methods of re-source and reserve estimation work extremely well for Normal (Gaussian) well-behaved information. However, most interesting mineral deposits exhibit far from this idealistic distribution of values. It seems that the more valuable the mineral, the less likely the data are to have a Normal distribution. Values tend to be "positively skewed" with a long tail into the high values. Using averaging techniques, such as inverse distance or ordinary kriging may result in consider-able overestimation of grades and tonnages unless such values are cut or otherwise modified. This paper presents some real case studies where distributions are (a) highly skewed and (b) the product of multiple phases of mineralisation. Practical methods are presented for solving such problems including combinations of indicator and log normal kriging methods. The emphasis of the presentation is on developing operational methods which can be used on project evaluation or grade control in producing mines.

That natural gas-gasoline can be used to advantage as a refrigerant is suggested by the fact that the "make" tanks and other parts of the equipment of gasoline plants frequently become coated with frost. The experiments reported in this paper confirm this assumption and indicate that volatile gasoline can be use used to advantage in many refrigerating plants. The Bureau of Mines is making a study of wax distillates in order to find out why satisfactory lubricating oils and waxes can be made easily from certain crude oils and only with difficulty from others. In the commercial distillation of crude petroleum it is customary to separate the distillates into the following groups: (A) Gasolines and naphthas, (B) Kerosenes, (C) Gas oil, and (D) Wax distillate (consisting mostly of light lubricating oil together with small amounts of paraffin Wax).

Gentlemen of the American Institute of Mining Engineers : I desire to thank you sincerely for the distinguished honor you have conferred upon me by electing me to the presidency of this society, a position which in the past has been filled by some of our most distinguished and ablest members, men eminently qualified by education, practical training and a business ability which has enabled them not only to fill the position with credit to themselves, but as well with honor to the society. In deference to a custom long established, by which the presidentelect is expected to read a paper on some subject with which he is more or less familiar, I have thought that a brief review of the methods employed in the manufacture of iron, as witnessed by myself, and reaching back to 1838, would interest some of our older members and give our younger ones a glimpse into the trials and difficulties encountered in those early days by the pioneers in this great industry. In 1840, 12 to 20 tons of pig-iron was the make of a furnace per week—at this time from 1200 to 2000 gross tons. In 1840, 3 to 4 tons No. 4 wire rods per turn. Direct reduction of iron ore by solid reducing agents have been studied extensively and summarised by several authors (Otsuka and Kunii, 1969; Abraham and Ghosh, 1979; Frauhan, 1977; Rao, 1971; Kawasaki, Sanscainte and Walsh, 1962; Ghosh, 1970; Rao, 1979). While studying the reduction behaviour, it is generally agreed that the reduction occurs via gaseous intermediate, generated by carbon gasification reaction which involves mass transfer, heat transfer nucleation and growth, etc through a) reduction reaction occurring at solid reductant, and b) reduction reaction occurring at solid iron oxides, thus making the overall reduction process very complex in terms of clearly defining the reduction kinetics of the system. In addition to this, practical difficulties like correctness of reaction temperature, (Seaton, Foster and Velasco, 1983) difficulties in isothermal temperature studies of reduction, difficulties in monitoring the reduction process while using gaseous reductants and separation of reduction by volatile matter from overall reduction process make the reduction kinetics more complex (Misra).

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B.
