In planning activities the aim is to adapt them to changes in conditions, in the needs of the mining industries, and in the public interest: those that contribute most to solving the present problems are emphasized, investigations of less immediate importance being recessed if necessary.

In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

"By the “HGMS-gravity separation-Flotation” combined technology, a Ta-Nb-Sn concentrates with the grades of Ta2O5 10.00%, Nb2O5 9.13% and Sn 42.62% at the recovery of 44.73% , 9.13% and 14.62% respectively , a Li concentrate with Li2O 3.11% at the recovery of 51.83% and a feldspar product are obtained. All the value elements are recovered. INTRODUCTION Tantalum and niobium widely used in electronics, atomic energy, aerospace and chemical industries with the advantages of high melting point, good ductility, low vapor pressure, strong corrosion resistance and high thermal conductivity are important strategic resources which occupy a special position in rare metals (Crockettand, 1993; GAO and Zou, 2004; LI and HUANG, 2012). China's tantalum and niobium resources are poor, and most of them are low grade, fine grain size, complex composition, and polymetallic associated with refractory mineral resources (GAO and Qiu,2013; Liang and Li, 2016). The Yifeng Lion Ore containing lithium and other rare metals (tantalum, niobium and tin) is an important lithium polymetallic deposit in China Jangxi province. While extensive previous studies have settled on the recovery of lithium minerals by flotation only for the extremely low grade of Ta, Nb and Sn. The regular gravity concentration is used, and the recovery of tantalum niobium is low. This paper sets out to investigate a combined flowsheet of “high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS),-gravity separation-flotation” to effectively comprehensively recover the Li, Ta, Nb, Sn and the feldspar resources in the Yifeng Lion Ore.ORE PROPERTIES Chemical analysis The run of mine comes from Jiangxi Yifeng Lion ore. The main elements of the ore chemical analysis results shows in Table 1. From Table 1, the grades of lithium and rubidium are relatively high, but the grades of tantalum and niobium are lower than the industrial grade; feldspar with high content of potassium and sodium and low content of iron can be used as high-quality ceramic raw materials."

During the past three years, a new rear-dumping dragline bucket technology has been patented, developed and tested at North Dakota coal mines. Field testing has shown that this new concept in dragline bucket technology can improve strip-mining efficiencies by reducing cycletimes and increasing dumping radius. This article details the process, participants and the results for the development of a rear-dumping dragline bucket. Participants in the process In November 1995, the board of directors of Dakota Coal authorized the execution of a field test and option agreement and a license agreement with the partnership of D.F. Schmidt, electrical/maintenance supervisor, and Bill Lengenfelder, president of Modern Industrial. The board also authorized entering into a dragline bucket field-testing agreement with the Falkirk Mining Co.

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. This requirement is crucial in accommodating mineral ores from developing resources, which are often more friable and stickier than in past decades.This paper will include details of chute installations associated with iron ore and coking coal, from the DEM simulations through to the performance of the installed and commissioned plant.CITATION:Moore, B A, van der Merwe, S and van Aarde, N, 2013. Barite deposits are of widespread occurrence in Nevada but there are few pro-ducing properties; most of the latter are in northern Nevada. The production of the state is small at present-in the neighborhood of 15,000 tons annually-but is steadily increasing. The barite occurs in veins and also as replacement deposits in lime-stone. The bulk of the production has come from the replacement deposits. It is thought that the barite was deposited from rising hot waters similar to-and probably contemporaneous with-those responsible for some of the metallic ores of the state. This paper discusses only the deposits in northern Nevada. THE commercial mining of barite did not begin in Nevada until 1916 but although the production has been small there has been a rapid increase in tonnage during the past several years. Barite is widely distributed in the state and production comes from at least nine of the seventeen counties. Apparently this is not generally known, as only two counties are mentioned in a recent publications dealing with barite. The increase in output is due largely to recently discovered barite deposits in northern Nevada. The principal production has come from the northern portions of Lander and Eureka counties; smaller amounts from Elko County. The discussion in this paper is confined largely to the deposits in these counties. Most of the producing area is tributary to the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, whose tracks lie along the Humboldt River. Barite is known from other northern counties but so far the production has been small. The output has come entirely from veins and replacement deposits, the latter largely in sedimentary rocks. In general, the barite from veins is white; that from the replacement deposits usually is dark gray to black, although some is light gray or white. Most of the veins contain sulphides and many barite-bearing veins have been worked for their content of base or precious metals.

This report summarizes a Bureau of Mines review of selected literature on the effects of subsidence due to high-extraction underground coal mining on farmland areas. The data are presented for consideration in evaluating the subsidence effects due to similar mining techniques on the prime farmland areas of Illinois. In Illinois the ground water level in the glacial drift is only 2 to 15 ft below the nearly flat to gently rolling ground surface. The main subsidence concern is flooding, as caused by the lowering of the ground surface, and the subsequent effects on crop production. Positive drainage must be maintained in the farmlands, and the need exists for extensive regional planning by the mining and agricultural industries to maximize short- and long-term production from both efforts. The Bureau is cooperating with the State of Illinois to develop basic information necessary for such planning.

ABSTRACT Reconnaissance exploration in the Kuene region Namibia has included geological mapping, soil and stream sediment geochemistry, and ground geophysical methods. Copper mineralization occurs within a well-defined belt with north-northwest to south-southeast trend, parallel to the regional strike of the sedimentary rocks. The occurrences vary in size but are generally stratabound. The mineralization is centred on the transition from calcareous shale and interbedded limestone, through carbonate rocks, to quartzite. Geochemical anomalies have been identified correlating to induced polarization (IP) and magnetic anomalies. The anomalies identify one potential metallogenic zone more than 17 km in strike length.

A method for evaluating the relative incendivity of detonating cord in natural gas-air mixtures was developed. The method consisted of firing short lengths of cord in bundles to determine the number of strands per bundle which would ignite natural gas-air mixtures 50 percent of the time in the 45-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines. The relative efficiency of a flame quenching agent, potassium acid tartrate (KHT), when incorporated in both the pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) core and the polyethylene sheath, was explored. The effects of sheath thickness, sheath composition, core weight, and core composition were evaluated. The bundle method established a quantitative scale for evaluating the relative incendivity of cords. The relative incendivity determined by the bundle method was then compared with the incendivity of 100-foot lengths of detonating cord when initiated in 8 percent natural gas in the 640-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines.

"Kinross’ Paracatu Mine has 20 years of operational success as one of the lowest grade milloperated gold mines in the world. At year end 2005, Paracatu’s Proven and Probable Reserves were 1.18 billion tonnes at a grade of 0.40 g/t Au, containing a total of 15.2 million ounces of gold.In 2005, the plant processed 17 Mt of ore and produced 180,519 ounces of gold at a cash cost of US$274/oz. An investment of US$470 million has been approved to expand production to 61 Mtpa in 2009 which will extend mine life to 2036. During the period from 2009 to 2013 the project is expected to produce an average annual output of approximately 557,000 ounces of gold at an average cost of sales of approximately $230 per ounce.The soft, friable ore containing readily leachable gold associated with sulphides lends itself to simple processing. The process flowsheet consists of crushing, grinding, gravity recovery, flotation, concentrate leach and carbon adsorption to produce bullion bars. This paper describes the current operation, the deposit’s unique metallurgical features and the future expansion plant that has been designed to optimise recovery of gold.INTRODUCTIONRio Paracatu Mineração (RPM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation, operates the Paracatu mine. The simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the directional solidification of an ingot is treated mathematically on the basis of simplifying assumptions. Expressions are derived for the difference in concentration of two solutes, and for the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier formed in a semiconductor by the segregation of a donor and an acceptor. THE problem of normal segregation of a single solute during the freezing of an alloy has been treated mathematically by a number of investigators. Gulliver' showed that coring increases the quantity of eutectic above that to be expected at equilibrium, for a system having limited solid solubility and, on the basis of simplifying assumptions, calculated the fraction of eutectic to be expected. Scheuer2 expressed composition of solid solution in terms of a distribution coefficient and the fraction solidified and compared experiment with calculation for the systems A1-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn. Hayes and Chipman,3 in a detailed study of segregation in a low carbon, rimming steel ingot, calculated distribution coefficients for a number of solutes in iron, compared calculated and experimental segregation curves, and discussed the effects of process variables such as rate of solidification and stirring. In the present paper a mathematical analysis is made of the simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the orderly freezing of a solid solution system, with particular emphasis on the difference in solute concentrations. Although the analysis is quite general and can be applied to the segregation of minor elements in alloys, it is directed in particular at the solidification of a semiconductor containing a donor and an acceptor. Normal segregation has unique aspects in a semiconductor, because of the ways in which donors and acceptors affect the electrical properties. The difference between two solute concentrations becomes of importance, as does also the gradient of the difference where the difference goes through zero, this being the concentration gradient of excess carriers at a pn barrier. A primary object of this paper is to extend the mathematical treatment of segregation to include these newer aspects which are of particular significance for semiconductors. One property of interest is the electrical conduc- tivity, which arises from the presence of donors 'or acceptors in solid solution. The conductivity may be either n-type or p-type depending on whether donors or acceptors, respectively, are in atomic excess. For both germanium and silicon, elements of Group V of the Periodic System, such as P, As, and Sb, are donors and elements of Group 111, as B, Al, In, and Ga, are acceptors.4-6 If a donor or acceptor is present alone in solid solution, the conductivity is proportional to its concentration." If both a donor and an acceptor are present, then the conductivity is proportional to the difference in their atomic concentrations. If the donor and acceptor segregate at different rates then a pn barrier in certain circumstances may form at some point in the ingot. Accordingly, equations are derived and illustrated which express the effect of segregation on: 1—the concentration of a single solute with a discussion of the assumptions; 2—the difference between two solute concentrations and means for minimizing its variation in an ingot; and 3—the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier. The analysis is applicable to processes in which the entire charge is melted and then progressively frozen from one end. The method in which an ingot is solidified in a crucible7 and that in which a solidifying rod is pulled from the melt8 both fall into this category. Segregation of One Solute If a cylinder of molten alloy is caused to freeze slowly from one end, a normal segregation of solutes will usually occur, producing a lengthwise concentration gradient in the ingot. Depending on whether a solute raises or lowers the melting point of the solvent, it will become concentrated in the first or last regions, respectively, to freeze. If it is assumed that freezing is such that there is no diffusion of solute in the solid, complete diffusion in the liquid, and that k, the distribution coefficient, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the just-freezing solid to that in the liquid, is constant, then the

A fluidized countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows are continuous except for short periods when resin increments are withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl sulfate between a simulated acid leach uranium solution and a strong-base, ion-exchange resin together with the subsequent elution with an acidified sodium chloride solution was studied. The effects of the number of sections, section heights, amount of resin withdrawal, and solution flow rates were investigated. Also examined were the kinetic and equilibrium relationships for the absorption step. The experimental data indicate a strong interdependence between variables. Solution retention time appears to be a major limiting variable. The column was efficient over a range of conditions, but close control was needed for optimum operation.

GEOLOGICAL problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integration of basic sciences with geological principles. INTRODUCTION Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the procession of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accumulated rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology, was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences. Some of the gases produced by permissible explosives on detonation are poisonous, and the probable hazard involved by the inhalation of carbon monoxide in the past has been evaluated from results of tests in the Bichel Gage. Tests have now been made in the Experimental Coal Mine of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the composition of the gases obtained under actual mining conditions for the purpose of comparing these, results with those found by the Bichel gage tests. Two permissible explosives were procured for these tests, one that produces a relatively low quantity of poisonous gases in the Bichel gage (24.8 liters per 1-1/2 pounds of explosive) and another that produces a relatively high quantity of poisonous gases (94.6 liters per 1-1/2 pounds). The first of these is designated by the Bureau of Mines as a class A4/ explosive and the other is designated a class B explosive. In comparison with Bichel-gage tests, the shooting of permissible explosives in a coal shot hole resulted in a large reduction in the quantity of carbon monoxide, the principal poisonous gas, which; in the mine tests, was only 22 percent of that found in Bichel-gage tests: The quantity of carbon monoxide from the class B explosive in Bichel-gage tests was 3.8 times larger than that from the class A explosive; in the coalmine tests the ratio was 4:1. The concentrations of carbon monoxide in the mine tests, as determined by analysis of the atmosphere in an enclosed space resulting from shooting 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class A explosive, were 0.03 and 0.06 percent, respectively, and the concentrations from 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class B explosive were 0.10 and 0.24 percent.

A modified approach to the implementation of Gy?s sampling theory is discussed and used to design a procedure for sampling crushed gold ore feed to metallurgical process plants. The approach involves calibration of certain ore-specific parameters. These parameters were calibrated for two different crushed gold ores en route to grinding mills in process plants. The model predictions were compared with the predictions from Gy?s original model. Far smaller masses of samples are required by the modified model than by Gy?s model at the same relative variance. The representativeness of the sampling procedure if normally distributed errors are assumed was also calculated. These procedures and evaluations lead to significant savings on cost of handling and preparation of the samples and to a quantifiable degree of confidence in the analytical results for the process plant.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

It is critical to monitor the ground conditions during excavation and drilling of boreholes during construction to identify possible changes in the soil and rock formations. Drilled shafts are increasingly used as foundations to support structures, bridges and other facilities in geomaterials such as soft-rocks and hard clays. Locating the bottom of the borehole during construction with the required design strength is critical. Hence developing a simple device that could be easily adapted/used with the drilling tool was of interest in this study. Determining the shear strength of the geomaterial in the borehole and at various elevations including the bottom of the borehole can lead to better quality control of construction by identifying the various layers based on strength. In this study, a down-hole penetrometer (DHP-CIGMAT) was designed, built, calibrated and tested in the field to determine its effectiveness in measuring the strength of soil/soft rock in the boreholes. Based on limited field tests, linear correlations between geomaterial strengths and DHP-CIGMAT deflection have been developed. The DHP-CIGMAT can be used to identify soils and soft rocks.

IT has been a noteworthy feature of the Cobalt camp, that many of the valuable ore deposits have been covered, wholly or in part, by small but usually deep lakes, such as Cobalt, Cart, and Peterson lakes, and with the subject of this article, Kerr lake. In the early days of the camp many water-covered areas, which have since been found to be valuable, were ignored, or neglected by owners, or simply perfunctorily staked for water rights. Kerr lake is probably the evidence of a fault or sharp fold, having a general east and west strike, and containing a series of ore-bearing fissures, parallel generally to the strike, although having some notable exceptions to the general rule. On the north side of Kerr lake the formation is of diabase, while on the south side it is of Huronian slates and conglomerates. These Huronian measures extend out under the lake, dipping gently to the north to a lateral distance not yet definitely determined, owing to the lack of development under the deepest parts of the lake. Probably the contact between the diabase and Huronian or else between the former and the .underlying Keewatin formation occurs somewhere near the center of the lake. Kerr lake originally covered 45 acres. Of this the Kerr Lake Mining Co. owned 12, the Drummond Mine, 7, and the Crown Reserve Mining Co. the remainder of 26 acres. Since the latter's property was originally entirely under water, it was necessary for the owners to make land for buildings and shaft room. Accordingly, in 1908, a trench was blasted out which deepened the outlet, and lowered the lake 8 ft.
