A sample of pyritic gold concentrate was investigated by wet chemical and electron optical techniques. Sub-samples were roasted in a laboratory scale fluidized bed roaster in the temperature range 400-700¦C. The calcine was characterised, and cyanide-leached using a standard bottle rolling test. Gold extraction efficiencies varied with roasting temperature. At temperatures of 400 and 450¦C gold ex- tractions of less than 40% were achieved, but between 500-700¦C the extraction had increased to 93--98Z. The surface area of the calcine varied with roasting temperature, reaching a maximum at 500¦C. There was no correlation between the surface area of the calcine and the efficiency of gold extraction.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. This paper describing the methods and costs of mining at the Hartley-Grantham mine of the Century Zinc Co. in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc district is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines can mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. LOCATION, HISTORY, AND GEOLOGY The Hartley-Grantham Mine is located just outside the city limits of Baxter Springs, Kans., as shown in Figure 1. A plan of the mine is given in Figure 2, and Figure is a cross section through A - A of Figure 2.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U.S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions. A review of the literature reveals that some work has been conducted on the roof truss. 1 Gambrell and Haynes (1970) showed that the roof truss is superior to angled roofbolts installed through a header. Sheorey, Verma, and singh2 (1973) used statics to prove that the optimum angle of inclination should be greater than 450? However, to date, no systematic attempt has been made to establish design criteria. In this report, the problem was approached in three ways. First, model studies were performed to determine general trends of truss support as a function of a number of variables. This provided a better understanding of the support mechanism involved. Secondly, beam theory was employed to calculate the actual support capacity of a truss, realizing the many simplifications, assumptions, and shortcomings of this approach to such a complicated problem. Last, field testing will be utilized to test the hypotheses previously developed and provide hard data to further synthesize roof truss design criteria. Field testing has recently commenced and should be complete before mid 1977.

In solution-mining of underground salt and similar minerals, using drilled wells for access, it is desirable to monitor the lateral growth pattern of the resulting fluid-filled cavern. Therefore, a process of seismic surveying from the surface of the ground has been conceived in which the amplitudes of waves reflected from and transmitted through the soluble formation are measured. The large acoustic impedance contrast between solid and fluid should produce striking amplitude anomalies, especially if shear waves are employed, since thick fluid bodies are opaque to shear waves. Horizontally-polarized (SH) shear waves are best for preventing conversion to P waves at the numerous horizontal interfaces in the ground. Field tests to date have shown that a truck-mounted, half-ton hammer striking horizontally against the end of a trench produces usable SH-wave energy at lateral distances up to about 850 ft. Horizontally-directed explosive wave sources were effective to about 2000 ft. Conventional magnetic-tape recording and processing were used, but with the detecting geophones oriented to favor SH waves. An irregular solution cavity in bedded salt at 500-ft depth has apparently been located by SH-wave and SV-wave reflections. Further field work is planned to corroborate and extend this result. The Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, is supporting this work. Major deposits of salt in tabular beds lie beneath some 300,000 sq miles of land in the central and northeastern U.S. This salt is a basic source of soda ash and chlorine, and has been extracted as brine from drilled wells for about a century. During the past two decades, the U.S. solution-mining industry, following the lead of European operators, has greatly improved the extraction process through the application of engineering and science.' In 1957, the Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, was formed. This group proceeded to attack certain common problems through the support of research. An outstanding problem has been that of determining the shape and location of the growing solution cavities in the underground salt, so that measures can be taken to maintain operating efficiency. The problem has been partially solved by the Dowel1 sonar mapping service, which employs a pulse-echo device lowered into the cavity through the well.2 However, the working range of this equipment is at present insufficient for large cavities, and echoes are not returned from highly sloping walls nor from behind such obstructions as rock debris. Therefore, an independent means of mapping the cavity, for example, from the surface without interfering with operation of the well, would be desirable. THEORY OF THE METHOD Seismic waves are the only physical agent known to be capable of sufficient resolution and penetration to define typical solution cavities from the surface of the ground. The geometry is unfavorable: cavity widths are generally less than half their depths below the surface; resolution and lateral location of boundaries and channels to within 50 ft at depths of 500 to 3000 ft is desirable. Conventional seismic surveying, as used for petroleum prospecting, is probably not the answer: isopach mapping, for example, is not thought accurate enough to define the cavity by the slight additional delay time it would introduce (of the order of 0.005 sec for a 50 ft-thick cavity in hard Paleozoic rocks). Refraction surveying has also been considered, but seismic specialists see little promise in it for this problem. In 1957, in correspondence with industry personnel, the writer suggested a seismic method based upon careful measurement of reflection amplitudes. As Table I illustrates, seismic reflection coefficients r for typical brine-rock interfaces are considerably higher than those for typical interfaces between different kinds of solid rock. This fact can be utilized in two ways, illustrated in Fig. 1: 1) If the cavity roof is reasonably flat (which it may sometimes be since the unsaturated top brine will be in contact with an insoluble rock stratum), extra-strong seismic reflections will be received from the salt stratum where the solid has been replaced by liquid.

Like almost any other 19th century mining area, the West Coast saw its 20th century scrapping era when machinery which had been installed in seemingly inaccessible places was somehow dragged out again. Fortunately there were some spots so remote that they defied even the most zealous of these pioneering recyclers. One of these was Big River, a mining locality in a rugged landscape straddling the headwaters of the Grey and Inangahua rivers. As a result there remains an internationally important collection of mining equipment including a poppet head, two steam winding engines, a pair of boilers, part of an aerial cableway with its loading system, and remnants of a stamp battery along with its associated gold smelter, cyanide tanks and zinc boxes. There are also assorted building remains associated with 60 years of mining and settlement. Since their abandonment in 1942, these relics have all somehow survived a further half century in a far from favourable climate with two or three metres of rain a year, frequent snowfalls and hot summer temperatures. The rate of decay during the past few years has been alarming.

STUDIES in the high-temperature separations chemistry of thorium-uranium fuels are complicated by the corrosive nature of these molten metal systems at 1700°C. Separations research pointed toward the removal of fission products from irradiated alloys has included a frozen salt-bed technique which minimizes container reaction with molten metal. The procedure consists of high-frequency induction melting of the metal sample which is supported by a vertical column of unmelted salt. The molten alloy melts its immediate salt environment and as it slowly falls down through the column, many of the fission-product poisons are transferred into the fused salt environment. The molten salt-metal zone is encompassed at all times by unmelted salt, preventing container contact. EXPERIMENTAL Experimental methods were separated into three parts: salt-bed preparation, melting, and analytical evaluation. A) Bed Preparation—The procedure for casting calcium-fluoride briquettes was to compress the powdered salt at 5,000 to 10,000 psi and place this compact in a graphite crucible. This assembly was inserted into a vacuum system and surrounded by an alumina crucible as well as molybdenum, tantalum, or stainless-steel foil thermal-radiation shields. The pressure was reduced and the crucible heated under vacuum to about 800°C with the fore pump operating. Argon was then admitted to about 0.8 atm and heating continued until the CaF2 had melted 5 min at the melting point seemed satisfactory). Apparatus used included a 1-in. graphite crucible with 1/8-in. walls, 1-in. ID in a 2-in. induction coil, and a 6-kw Ajax high-frequency converter. B) Melting—Calcium-fluoride briquettes, 1 in. in diam and 1/2 to 1 in. thick, were prepared and vertically stacked to obtain the desired column length. An irradiated alloy sample (nut = 10") was placed on top of the salt column and the assembly was connected to the vacuum system. After evacuation of 5 to 10 , purified argon was admitted and the system flushed twice. The final argon pressure was about 0.8 atm. The sample was heated by induction at a power of about 6.5 kw. It then melted its way down through the salt and freely dropped into a small alumina crucible. This paper describes the development of an infra-red ore dryer at the Mines Branch. The dryer utilizes an infra-red heat source mounted over a stainless-steel belt to dry ores and concentrates of varying particle size and moisture content. It has been found to ?be successful in meeting Mines Branch requirements of minimum dusting loss and ease of cleaning to decrease ,contamination between various batches of dried products. It is described with the hope that it might .prove useful in other laboratories where there are similar problems. It might have an application in the drying of concentrates containing high values where dust losses would result in a considerable loss of revenue; also for small batches of material or an intermittent drying problem.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance in terms of produced ore grades and quantity and extraction process efficiency often deviate from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.With the development of modern information and communication technology over the last decade, a flood of data about different aspects of the production process is available in a real-time manner. For example, sensor technology enables online characterisation of geochemical, mineralogical and physical material characteristics on conveyor belts or at working faces. The ability to utilise this additional information and feed it back into reserve block models and planning assumptions opens up new opportunities to continuously control the decisions made in production planning to increase resource recovery and process efficiency. This leads to a change in paradigm from a discontinuous method to near real-time reserve reconciliation and model updating, which calls for suitable modelling and optimisation methodologies to quantify prior knowledge in the reserve model, process and integrate information from different sensor sources, back propagate the gain in information into reserve models and efficiently optimise operational decisions in real-time.This paper introduces the concept of an integrated closed-loop framework for real-time reserve management, incorporating sensor-based material characterisation, geostatistical modelling under uncertainty, modern data assimilation methods for sequential model updating and mining system simulation and optimisation. Techniques for studying the performance characteristics of heterogeneous reservoirs have been developed. The effect of permeability variation on both the steady-state and the transient flow of a single fluid has been investigated. Limited comparisons with field and laboratory data have been made. The physical models studied consist of random three-dimensional arrays of homogeneous porous blocks. The permeabilities of the individual elements are assigned according to a specific distribution function; uniform anisotropy is introduced by varying the relative dimensions of the blocks. A particular model is perturbed simply by re-arranging its elements at random. The behavior of a physical model is determined by digitally solving its numerical analogue. Based on computational experiments, subject to the restrictions implied by the assumptions that were made, the following general conclusions have been drawn. 1. The most probable behavior of a heterogeneous system approaches that of a homogeneous system with a permeability equal to the geometric mean of the individual permeabilities. 2. The effects of flow geometry and anisotropy on the most probable value of the effective permeability of a heterogeneous medium are finite but not significant. 3. The permeability determined from a pressure build-up curve lor a heterogeneous reservoir gives a reasonable value for the effective permeability of the drainage area. 4. A qualitative measure of the degree of heterogeneity and its spatial configuration are obtained from a comparative study of core analysis and pressure build-up data. It has been indicated that these conclusions are predicated on the assumption that the core analysis and the pressure build-up data represent true reservoir characteristics. Common sources of error in these data have been discussed. One of the most significant problems of reservoir engineering is that of determining the nature and the disposition of the heterogeneities that inevitably occur in petroliferous formations. It is with this problem that this paper is concerned. Extensive research, both theoretical and experimental, has provided reasonable descriptions of the physical processes that are associated with primary and secondaryrecovery mechanisms. Similar progress in the fie1d of numerical analysis and the evolution of truly high-speed digital computers have made it feasible to calculate the behavior of these mechanisms under almost any environmental conditions. It appears to be logical, then, to conclude that the mechanistic performance of any reservoir can be predicted with some confidence. Unfortunate1y, a necessary condition for the validity of this conclusion is that the formation be adequately described in a macroscopic sense. This condition cannot be satisfied ill general; therefore, a frustrating situation currently exists — it is possible to compute the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on behavior, but it is not possible to specify the heterogeneity itself. In many cases, the predicted behavior of a project is so completely dominated by irregularities in the formation's physical properties that the gratuitous assumptior, of a particular form for the variation can reduce the solution of the problem to a mere tautological exercise. While all porous media are microscopically heterogeneous, only macroscopic fluctuations need be considered since the fundamental concepts of reservoir mechanics are based on macroscopic quantities. For the simplest case in which only one physical property varies from point to point, the degree of heterogeneity that is apparent depends on three distinct factors, i.e., the nature of the property's variation (frequency distribution), its disposition (spatial distribution) and the inherent stability of the mechanism being studied. Consequently, any attempt to devise an unambiguous scale of heterogeneity must take these factors into account. Since this investigation is intended to be exploratory, it will be restricted to single-phase flow because of the simplification implied; both steady-state and unsteady-state behavior will be considered. Trends in slag composition in acid open hearth practice, particularly the variation in iron and manganese oxides during refining, are reviewed. A procedure which is currently being used to control the refining reactions is described and partially explained through slag phase diagram considerations. In addition, the ionic nature of these slags is considered and it is proposed that silica combines with the oxide ion and forms a series of complex silicate ions. The effect of basic oxides such as FeO, MnO, and CaO is apparently additive in furnishing the oxide ion for this purpose. IT is now possible to control192 the refining of steel in an acid open hearth furnace to a surprising degree. This control has been brought about through the knowledge and use of several facts and tests. These are: 1—A planned charge analysis based on a knowledge of the type of fuel, the bath depth, etc. 2—Knowledge and control of rate of fuel input as well as its method of atomization, if any. 3—Determination of the slag fluidity. 4—Bath temperatures (use of the Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple). 5—Periodic determination of carbon content (use of the Carb-analyzer or Carbometer). Through the use of these control methods, a heat may be made to "melt-in" with or without residual manganese and silicon. The rate of refining or carbon elimination may be controlled accurately, and the desired tapping (or "go-ahead") carbon may be approached at a rapid or slow rate according to preference and type of steel being made. Thus operating time may be predetermined and greatly reduced. Further, all of the refining can be done without any ore or other oxidizing additions, and the heat may be brought to the desired tapping temperature simultaneously with the attainment of the desired carbon analysis. This control procedure is being used in most acid plants in the United States today and has been de- scribed.', ' Although the slag metal relations are sufficiently well known to control the heat as stated, yet it is possible to account for only about two-thirds' of the 0, which must have been used for the elimination of the carbon and other metalloids. Phase diagram studies' of the slags, slag weights, the metal particle theory,' ore additions, limestone additions, etc., may all be taken into consideration; yet, the mechanism of oxidation and source of all the oxygen remain to be explained. This paper reviews some of the principles upon which the control methods were based and proposes other possibilities regarding the unexplained phenomena. Old and New Acid Open Hearth Practice Some of the recent statements in the literature regarding acid open hearth operation are based on old heat data which are not typical of modern American practice. These old heat logs have been responsible for many misconceptions regarding the acid hearth practice and represent heats which do not coincide with modern methods. In recent years, American practice has been altered materially and these changes will be briefly described. Modern American Practice: A typical log of a modern American acid open hearth heat' is shown in Fig. 1 which indicates that the refining time was only two hours, during which the carbon was eliminated rapidly and the bath temperature increased at a fast rate. The manganese and silicon contents of the metal were essentially eliminated and their oxides had become constituent parts of the slag at the "melt-down" period. That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. CPeX is a non-ideal explosive performance prediction model. The model takes into account the rate of energy release, the extent of chemical reac- tion and the effect of confinement on energy release. The model resolves the explosive energy into `shock' and `heave' com- ponents as a function of explosive type, hole diameter and rock type. The predictions of the model are compared for a bulk emulsion, and a prill-doped bulk emulsion in soft rock. The predictions, based on calibra- tion of the model with simple unconfined detonation velocity measure- ments, show the significant effect of non-ideality on explosive Performance.

ABSTRACT: The modulus of deformation of rock mass is an important engineering parameter required for the design of foundation of hydraulic structure and to study the interaction of rock mass and the structure at the foundation support. Different equipment and techniques are used to arrive at the design modulus value. Since any error in the estimation of modulus values results in multiplication of its effects in the analysis, it is necessary to know about the reliability of testing equipment and procedures. In the present study modulus values obtained by different in-situ equipment at different project sites have been compared. KURZFASSUNG: Der Verformungsmodul von der Felsenmasse ist technisch ein wichtiger Parameter, den man zur Konstuktion des Grunds fuer die Hydro – Tektonik, benoetigt um auch die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der Felsenmasse und der Tektonik am Traggrund zu betrachten. Verschiedene Geraete und Methoden werden angewandt, um den Ausfuehrungsmodul -Wert zu erreichen. Es ist erforderlich, die Zuverlaessigkeit der Pruefeinrichtung sowie des Verfahrens zu kennen, da irgend ein Fehler in der Abschaetzung von Modulwerten in der Analyse zu einer Vervielfachung ihrer Einwirkung fuehrt. In der vorligenden Arbeit werden die Modulwerte gewonnen aus unterschiedlichen Einrichtungen an Ort und Stelle and verschiedenen Projekt -Stellen mit einander verglichen. SOMMAIRE: Le module de deformation d’une roche est un parametre important pour la conception et realisation des ouvrages hydrauliques ainsi que pour etudier l’interaction de la roche et de la structure d’appuis de base. De divers equipments et techniques sont employes pour determiner la valeur de ce module de conception. Puisque l’effet d’une erreur d’evaluation du module devient multiplie dans l’analyse, il est necessaire de savoir la fiabilite des equipments et des methods qu’on ulilise. Dans cette etude, on a compare les valeurs des modules obtenues en employant les equipments in-situ aux sites differents de projets.

"The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in downtown metropolitan San Francisco, California, is supported on a mat foundation. Although the mat foundation of the original museum was designed to accommodate a future expansion, the plans for expansion that developed in 2010 required a larger footprint to accommodate the new space requirements of the museum. The new, larger expansion was designed by lead architect Snohetta. It will be a tall 12-story, steel-framed building occupying an area that was once the eastern part of the existing museum as well as two adjacent and newly acquired parcels.As designed, the expansion includes a 30-foot-deep excavation which is surrounded by adjacent buildings and improvements. Because of variable subsurface conditions at the site, geotechnical challenges included mitigating anticipated differential settlement between the existing and new foundations, preventing overstressing of the existing mat foundation, controlling groundwater to prevent settlement of surrounding improvements, and providing temporary support of adjacent structures during excavation for the new basement.To address several of the geotechnical challenges, soil-cement mixed (SMX) ground improvement was recommended by Treadwell & Rollo. However, during contract negotiations and construction, the specialty contractor proposed using jet grouting as an alternative technique for ground improvement. The jet grouting approach was accepted in principal, but when implemented was only marginally successful. Accordingly, the contractor eventually installed SMX panels using a Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) machine. Because the CSM machine was a late arrival during construction, the contractor was not able to take advantage of the ground-improvement technique to install many of the shoring elements that we had originally recommended (such as the cut-off shoring wall). In the end, SMX panels were installed as ground-improvement beneath the new mat foundation to (1) reduce the potential for liquefaction in clean sand below the groundwater by providing increased rigidity to the soil, (2) reduce the potential for disturbing a weak underlying marsh deposit during construction, and (3) transfer vertical building loads to a layer of underlying dense sand.This paper also discusses the quality control and quality assurance programs that were implemented to check that the ground-improvement techniques used were thorough and complete and provided the required strength to transfer the new foundation loads to the underlying strata."

THE vanadiferous shales of southeastern Idaho and southwestern Wyoming constitute the largest known reserve of vanadium in the United States.1 These deposits have never been exploited except for the relatively small amounts of vanadium recovered by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in the treatment of phosphate rock from southeastern Idaho. The major domestic source of vanadium has been the sandstone ores of southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado. Early in World War II, it appeared that these ores could not meet the greatly increased demand for vanadium, so the investigation described in this report was undertaken to develop processes for the recovery of vanadium from the Idaho-Wyoming deposits. The utilization of these deposits became unnecessary, however, because of greatly expanded production from the Utah-Colorado sandstone ores and the continued availability of vanadium from other sources, chiefly Peru. The major use of vanadium is as an alloying agent in the manufacture of high-quality steels. Vanadium constructional steels usually contain 0.05 to 0.20 pct vanadium, which refines the grain and increases the strength, elastic limit, and resistance to shock and fatigue. Vanadium tool steels not used in high-speed work contain 0.10 to 0.60 pct whereas high-speed tool steels contain 1.0 to 4.0 pct. Vanadium compounds are used as catalysts (principally for the oxidation of SO2 to sulphuric acid and of naphthalene to phthalic acid) and in the paint, chemical, ceramic, dye, and printing industries. The selection of the particular ore deposit to be exploited would involve consideration of many factors besides the metallurgical results that might be obtained. Chief among these would be the reserves of ore available, the grade of the ore, and the mining costs. As very little was known about any of these factors, it was necessary to investigate methods of treatment of all the ores under consideration, working with samples obtained in the course of the exploration work, even though they were not positively representative of the whole deposit from which they were taken. Because of wartime conditions prevailing when this investigation was started, first consideration was given to processes that could be put into operation most quickly and would involve minimum use of strategic materials, even though these processes might not be the most economical.

Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to deter- mine the utility of heavy media separation, particularly a cone type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy media system was deter- mined. Two-stage pilot scale heavy media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses were determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. Mainland China, with one-fourth of the world's population and one-tenth of its coal production, can no longer be ignored as a considerable force on the world energy scene. In terms of annual productivity, China's 300 million tons of coal rank third behind the Soviet Union with 655 million and the United States 557 million (1968 Minerals Yearbook. USBM). When viewed from another angle, 1967 figures show that increased productivity from all coal-producing continents, with the exception of North America, was led by Chinese-dominated Asia with a 19% gain. Not unpredictably though, China, on a per capita basis, is closer to the bottom of the list among members of the industrial community. Despite its misspent youth, and despite the set- backs caused by the Big Leap Forward of the late 50's and the Cultural Revolution of the late 60'S, the People's Republic has managed to make some impressive strides in developing its coal industry over the past twenty years.
