An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. Introduction America's workforce is the heart of the nation's economy. The health of its members is a matter of national priority. Statistics show that the most common cause of job difficulties is excess use of alcohol or other drugs. Up to 75% of these troubled employees can be returned to productive careers at little expense and with great benefit to their industries. Of the 1.5 million private corporations in the US, only about 500 have alcohol treatment programs. Even fewer have drug abuse programs. It is time that the myths and prejudices surrounding alcohol and drug abuse are dispelled and help is offered. Corporations and labor unions are now finding that programs to treat these diseases benefit both the employees and the industry. The employee derives health and job security. The company sees increased productivity and decreased costs in sick pay and absenteeism. Unfortunately, three-fourths of the nation's 90.5 million workers are employed in establishments of fewer than 500 employees. In these settings, it is unlikely that either management or the unions will take the initiative in developing programs. Alcohol alone affects the health and productivity of nearly 8% of any workforce. This translates to more than 5 million employees in small business. These workers present an opportunity and a challenge. Alcohol abuse costs the nation nearly $116 billion annually. Seventy billion dollars is attributed to lost production. Medical expenditures related to alcohol are estimated to be nearly $13 billion. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates the cost of substance abuse to industry to be in excess of $4 billion a year. In addition to its economic impact, substance abuse has serious personal and social consequences. The mining industry experiences the same exposure as other industries to alcohol, drug abuse, and other employee problems. However, the existence of these problems poses special hazards because of the unique conditions found in mining. Mining has many safety and health hazards. In commonly used to prepare the surface of the mineral to be floated so that attachment to air takes place. The quantity of agent required to make the mineral hydrophobic is usually very small, of the order of 0.1 to 0.25 lb per ton of mineral. Details of the mechanism of pyrite collection are for the most part unsettled. Adsorption of collector has long been believed to involve an ion exchange mechanism as demonstrated for galena' and for chalcocite. In the work on chalcocite it was also demonstrated that a film of xanthate radicals unleachable in solvents that dissolve alkali xanthates, copper xanthate, or dixanthogen was formed at the surface of the mineral. The unleachable product increased with increasing addition of xanthate up to a maximum corresponding to an oriented monolayer of xanthate radicals. Pyrite is extremely floatable with xanthate if its surface is fresh,,' but the floatability decreases rapidly as oxide coatings increase in abundance. Pyrite shows zero contact angle when in contact with ethyl xanthate solution at pH higher than about 10.5; at neutrality. a contact angle of 60° is obtained at a reagent concentration of 25 mg per liter. Alkali sulfides and cyanides are pyrite depressants.

This paper is a review and comparative study of various processes investigated for PGM extraction. A number of processes described in this paper have already been commercialized. The technical and environmental aspects of the important processes are discussed.

The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. Both methods provide a viable alternative to the current manual detection, but their differences make them applicable to different cases.CITATION:Silversides, K and Melkumyan, A, 2014. This report describes and appraises recent progress in the development of a differential sulfatizing process for recovering a ferrograde manganese oxide from low-grade manganiferous ferruginous materials in the Cuyuna range. Individual process steps were carried out successfully using a 20-inch-diameter shaft for continuous countercurrent sulfatization of the manganese, a multiple-compartment rotary drum for leaching the water-soluble manganese sulfate, a submerged-combustion evaporator for the recovery of monohydrate crystals of manganese sulfate, and a shaft furnace for the thermal decomposition of sulfate crystals for production of a ferrograde manganese oxide and a sulfur dioxide gas suitable for sulfatization of fresh are. Of the two general kinds of Cuyuna manganiferous materials--the carbonate slates and the oxidized ores--only the slates were studied at pilot scale.

Once a mineralized body has been delineated, drilled and estimated from surface samples, it often happens that before the final go-no-go decision is taken, an underground sampling program is decided, very often via a ramp which hopefully will be later used to extract the ore. The cost of such a program can be close to a million dollars. On other occasions, when a property changes hands and is reexamined maybe 20 years after the original drilling program, a "check sampling" program is carefully, designed to make "sure" that the old assays are "correct". One may fear poor sampling practice in old days, or deliberate highgrading by promoters. Again one may be talking of resampling cost which may be in the six-figures range. Other similar situations include the drilling of a few large diameter holes to ascertain the validity of a majority of small diameter drill holes, or auger drilling, or back-rimming. In uranium checking radiometric information is also a problem related to the above ones.

The behavior of slime-sized particles in a flotation cell is neither well documented nor well understood. In general, slimes (or 'fines' as they will be alternatively called in this chapter) have been either ignored, eliminated, or treated empirically. Recently, however, some good experimental and theoretical work has been done that leads qualitatively to a clearer understanding of the problems involved. Fines are small particles that, owing to their smallness, behave differently from larger particles of the same material. The smaller the particle, the larger is its surface-to-mass ratio. The difference in the surface-to-mass ratio for a micron-sized particle and a centimeter-sized particle is 10,000 to 1. For our purposes we shall arbitrarily define any particle less than 10 µ 10-3 cm) as being a fine. This is generally considered the upper limit of colloidal-sized particles. Recently, the field of colloidal chemistry has successfully used the concept of the double layer to explain dispersion and flocculation of fine particles in a static system. Flotation, however, is a dynamic system due both to the turbulence of the liquid and to the coursing of the bubbles through the cell. Further more, a flotation system is a heterogeneous system in which there are a number of different types of particles which interact with one another. A further difficulty is that no two flotation systems are the same for minute quantities of a variety of common chemicals will alter the behavior of the system. These reasons make reproducible experimental results that can ex- plain fine-particle behavior difficult to obtain. In spite of these experimental difficulties, millions of tons of ore containing a large amount of fines are successfully floated every year. For example, at the Morning mill of American Smelting and Refining Co., a galena concentrate that was 42% -6 µ and a sphalerite concentrate that was 33% -9 µ were floated leaving a tailing that was 27% - 9 µ.l Ores that contain fines can generally be divided into two classes. In the first are those in which the valuable mineral tends to slime, such as galena and hematite. In the other class, one or more of the gangue minerals forms the slime; a typical example is barite. Though the problems due to the presence of fines are often the same in handling the two classes of ore, the method of handling them is different because of economic considerations. Nonmetallic mineral flotation is particularly affected by slimes, by either slime-coating effects or excessive reagent consumption. THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it becomes important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determining whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

IT is not the object of the present paper to give a description of the minerals found on Mine Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., nor even to touch upon all the forms of the ores named, but to place upon record and call to the attention of the Institute some interesting facts concerning them. In May, 1875, after the Dover meeting, some of the members visited this locality, and, no doubt, it is fresh in their memories, being one of the best known mineralogical points in our country. It will be only necessary to describe it very briefly. Mine Hill and Stirling Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., the former being at the village of Franklin Furnace, and the latter near Ogdensburg,-are the only localities in the State where zinc ores are found in workable quantities.* Mine Hill is the more northerly, and mineralogically differs from its neighbor, chiefly in having no hydrated ores to speak of, while at Stirling this deposit is considerable. At both points Franklinite, red oxide, and silicate of zinc occur in large quantities. Mine Hill lies on the east side of the Wallkill River, above which it rises to an extreme elevation of about 150 feet. On the summit the outcrop of the Franklinite vein appears, while the lowest worked points are perhaps 10 or 15 feet above the level of the stream. Corn¬mencing at the northern end, where the Hamburg Road crosses it, this outcrop runs along the northwestern brow of the hill a distance of about 2000 feet, in a general southwest direction, to a point where is a large, cavern-like opening, called the "Southwest Opening." " Double Rock," about the highest point on the hill, lies near the middle of this 2000 feet of outcrop, and over or near it passes a property line, to which allusion will hereafter be made. At the Southwest Opening the vein bends abruptly towards the east,-the angle between the two parts being perhaps 45°,-and this easterly branch continues some 700 feet. From the northern part of the Stirling Hill deposit to the southern part of the Mine Hill deposit is about two miles, and in this interval the vein carrying Franklinite * See New Jersey State Geology, 1868, p. 669.

"In view of the decade long decline in worldwide mine equipment productivity and with heavy economic pressures and survival at risk, improvements for those remaining in the game are essential. The latest Multifactor Productivity data for the US mining industry indicates a continuing descent with Australia on a similar course. The world’s mining industry has a fleet of over 400 large draglines moving billions of tons of material annually. The most efficient use of this equipment resource will provide a competitive advantage to those companies who are committed to improving performance. A dragline monitoring system is a requirement for optimum operations. The monitor reports the facts. Focused actions can change the facts and create improved performance. Analyzing monitor data to build knowledge and create understanding is a beginning. Understanding the key productivity indicators for dragline operations and an effective benchmarking process are the basis for improvement. There is overwhelming evidence that adopting new technologies and concepts including AC drive technology can and will bring about a step change in dragline operating cost with improved production performance.STATE OF THE MINING INDUSTRY A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower and lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts the worlds mining equipment productivity has declined 20% over the past seven years. (Lumley, 2014) Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear. The world’s mining industry fleet of well over 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually.This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations."

In the exploitation of large porphyry type deposits where a cut-off has to be applied and where "internal waste" exists, planning people ask the geologist for the estimated grade of small blocks. Comparison with actual production figures and blast hole assays shows that any kind of weighted average of neighboring DDH (diamond drill hole) samples provides an excessingly smooth picture of reality, resulting most of the time in overevaluation of tons of ore. Solutions based on examination of Past production data exist14 but it would be necessary to have a solution which can be applied before production starts as the preceeding problem also results in an overestimation of the total reserves, often by as much as 20%, thus changing the mine life accordingly and destroying any "optimum planning" which could have been done. The proposed alternative is to forecast the grade distribution of small blocks in a larger block, sufficiently well documented. Several Possible ways to estimate these distributions are reviewed and emphasis is placed on recently developed methods (source G. Matheron) where the coefficients of the orthogonal polynomial series expansion of the distribution of any size of block are directly estimated by kriging. The efficiency of the technique is tested on a level of the Cyprus Pima open pit where the predicted recovery is compared to actual production figures.

"The Bureau of Mines has recorded a number of different background dust sources that significantly contaminated the air breathed by bag machine operators. These background sources, observed at five different plants over the past 2 years, can expose bag machine operators to more significant dust concentrations than the filling process itself. To keep bag operator exposure within acceptable dust levels established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, the significance of these background sources must be realized, and the sources must be identified and controlled. The purpose of this work is to identify common background dust sources and show the significant effects that they have on the bag operator's overall dust exposure. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this report is to identify some common background dust sources in and around the bag-filling area. Although these background dust sources are of ten unrecognized, they can be more significant sources of contamination than the dust generated from the bagging process.The bagging of mineral products into 50- and 100-lb paper bags is common throughout the entire mineral processing industry. Bagging is performed by a bag operator who sits in front of a two- or four-station fill machine. The bagger's function is to attach empty bags to the fill nozzles as filled bags are ejected from the machine. If the product being bagged is extremely fine (smaller than 200 mesh), the bag operator's dust exposure is usually one of the highest in the plant.The bag operator is exposed to two primary dust sources. The first is product blowback during the bag-filling cycle. This occurs as excess pressure is released from around the fill nozzle during filling. As the excess air forces its way out of the bag, product is forced out with it. This blowback of product leaving the bag creates a considerable amount of dust. The second major source is the ""rooster tail"" of product thrown from the bag valve and fill nozzle as the bag is ejected from the fill machine. Since the bag is pressurized as it leaves the machine, product spews out of the valve for a few seconds."

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Novel rare earth boron icosahedral compounds are investigated as potential high temperature thermoelectric materials. REB50-type compounds and REB22C2N compounds were synthesized and the thermoelectric properties measured. Seebeck coefficients in excess of 200 V/K are observed at temperatures above 1000 K for the REB50-type compounds. Strikingly, n-type behavior was observed for REB22C2N. Up to now, non-doped B12 icosahedral compounds have all been p-type. The discovery of an n-type compound is extremely important in terms of the potential development of this class of compounds as viable thermoelectric materials. Low thermal conductivities of < 0.03 W/cm/K at room temperature was observed for these rare earth boron cluster compounds.

The future focus in such diverse areas as mineral processing, waste treatment, recycling and biosciences is discussed and the research and development needs are outlined.Our walk through the innovation landscape in magnetic separation illustrates the enormous effort that has been expended over the years to convert a wealth of novel idea into workable techniques. Remarkable progress has been achieved and numerous successful innovations have been introduced into material treatment operations. On the other hand these techniques have experienced their fair share of failures. The reasons for these cover a wide spectrum of risks that accompany any effort to implement new technology."

The selection of a suitable mathematical function for the modelling of the partition curve for dense medium cyclones is discussed. Five alternative functional forms (based on three basic functions) are compared using data obtained in the course of an extensive experimental study of a 610mm dense medium cyclone. It is shown that, for adequately sampled tests, any of the functions may be used, although a function based on the Weibull distribution is shown to be most suitable. Where data are poor, all functional forms exhibit disadvantages, notably in terms of a reduction in precision of parameter estimation. This problem can be exacerbated by the complex numerical techniques required to estimate the parameters of a particular function. A set of ideal requirements for a performance function are presented.
