Disposal of mine tailings has been recognized as an unavoidable burden of mining companies and local authorities. Conventional methods dispose mine tailings in a passive manner which hardly generates any value from them. On the other hand, growing local communities close to mines need more infrastructures which require great amounts of raw materials. In view of the above mentioned situation, a novel utilization of mine tailings is explored as alternative material for asphalt pavement, in order to extract more value from mine tailings and solve the high cost of pavement material. Inherent physical properties of the mine tailings were first investigated to find out their availability as pavement material. Then test specimens were made as mixture of the mine tailings and other pavement material to be tested in laboratory. "AbstractA number of panels of various aluminum alloys in different combinations and secured by steel and three types of aluminum rivets were exposed underground at two locations in a Northern Ontario gold mine for two years and then examined to determine the extent of corrosion. The results indicate Alcan 65S-T to possess considerable advantages over Alcan 178-T, which has been employed in the construction of light skips and cages with considerable success for almost twenty years. Information on the behaviour of these alloys when used with steel rivets and in mixed combinations with themselves was obtained.IntroductionBy the complete substitution of aluminum alloys for steel in the fabrication of mining skips and cages, their weight can be reduced as much as 50 per cent. Lesser savings are possible though its savings are possible through its plates, doors, reinforcing members, etc. Reduced weight leads to economy through increased hoisting efficiency.For a new installation, the basis of design is the rate of production, which thus fixes the live load to be hoisted per trip. A lighter skip permits the use of a lighter rope and a smaller hoist. In deep shafts with high-speed hoists operated in balance, the power required for accelerating is considerable. The hoist size is determined by the weight of skip, load, and rope plus the force required to accelerate or decelerate these three elements A light skip may result in a considerably lighter rope. This is important because, even though the skip can be completely balanced this is not true of the rope. Partial balancing is possible, but conical hoist drums or other devices for this purpose are costly; thus a smaller rope results in a smaller hoist, with consequent general reduction in cost of the whole installation. A reduction in power consumption is also obtained as a result of keeping to a minimum the amount of unbalanced load and the weight of all moving parts which must be accelerated."

Two significant TBM boreability predic- tion models are outlined. Predicted advance rates are compared with actual advance rates taken from twenty case histories. The results show that a simple low cost method that uses one machine parameter and one rock parameter compares very favourably with a high cost sophisticated method which also includes information regarding discontinuities in the rock mass. The effect of rock texture on drillability is also examined. A method of quantifying rock texture has been developed and is outlined. Experimental results show that the developed TEXTURE COEFFICIENT returns highly statisti- cally significant correlations with drilla- bility data in a wide range of rock types.

The Lincoln Terminal System is described as a device with the capability to deliver technical information, monitor student performance, and assure learning in industrial training. An experimental unit, the LTS-3S, was constructed and delivered to the Bureau of Mines with appropriate lesson material for a test of feasibility and acceptability of this form of training in the mining environment. Operations were conducted at two mine maintenance schools. The overall results were that (1) there was a substantial improvement between tests before and after self-training on the LTS, (2) students found this an acceptable way to learn, and (3) reaction by training personnel and supervisors was favorable toward the feasibility and advantages of using the LTS in the mining environment. Transfer of the LTS to industry depends on availability of reliable units and adequate lesson material. The requirements for authors of training materials were established based on advice from mine training experts, formal analysis of lesson development procedures, and experience from efforts in lesson development at Lincoln Laboratory-It was concluded that experienced mine training instructors were best qualified to proceed effectively and economically to format instructional material for the LTS, if supported by well-designed facilities and services. Discussion with mining experts confirmed the desirability of generating training materials and delivering instruction at distributed locations to meet local training needs and in direct support of industrial operations.

Mineral liberations that would be obtained by grinding an ore to a specific size can be predicted by analyzing unbroken ore pieces, and mineral liberations in ground ores and mill products can be determined directly by image analysis. Predictions of mineral liberations are made by measuring size distributions and textures of mineral grains by image analysis and using liberation models. Ground ores and mill products are analyzed to determine the proportion of mineral that is liberated, and the data are used to evaluate mineral behavior during mineral beneficiation. The liberation data for minerals in a suite of mill products from a circuit are processed by a materials balancing technique to calculate recoveries of minerals in different types of particles throughout the circuit. The liberation-materials balance data define mineral recoveries; define the behavior of an ore in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test: and indicate whether recovery improvements are possible and/or feasible.

Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropri¬ateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at 30th June, 1996, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion- resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

The Latrobe Valley brown coal deposits are one of Australia's major energy resources with measured and indicated reserves amounting to some 162 billion tonnes. Economically recoverable reserves are estimated at some 65 billion tonnes, 47 billion tonnes of which are classified as available for mining (VBCC (1983)). These deposits contain one of the lowest grade fuels used anywhere in the world. Typical Net Wet Specific Energy values range from 6 to 9 MJ/kg. Despite the low energy value of the raw coal, the Latrobe Valley deposits represent approximately 90% of Victoria's indigenous non-renewable energy resources. Utilisation of this vast primary energy resource has been a key factor in the economic development of Victoria.

The processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range were studied to obtain an understanding of the basis of Coffin's law. Particular attention was paid to the manner of mack nucleation and to the determination of the portion of the total lifetime spent in crack propagation. It was observed that cracks are nucleated at surface notches meated during reversed plastic deformation, Principally at grain boundaries, and that crack growth occupies greater than 75 pct of the fatigue life. When inclusions are present, they are often the primary sites of crack initiation. From consideration of the incremental distances advanced by a crack in each cycle and of the lifetimes of different materials, it appears that the universality of Coffin's law arises from the similarity of crack-tip strain for a given applied strain amplitude, irrespecti7:e of material. STUDIES of low-cycle fatigue have been particularly rewarding in that a simple correlation between fatigue lifetime and plastic-strain range has been shown to exist. This empirical relationship takes the forml,2 Nner=C [1] where N is the number of cycles to failure, Er is the plastic-strain range defined as the total plastic strain per cycle (the sum of the tensile plastic strain plus the compressive plastic strain), n, the exponent, is a constant independent of the material to a first-order approximation and often has a value of about 0.5, and C is a constant which for a number of ductile and metallurgically stable materials is approximately 0.65 for fully reversed strain.3 This relationship has been shown to be valid for a wide variety of metals and alloys and is often referred to as Coffin's law. However, it is yet not clear why so many different metals and alloys exhibit the same over-all behavior in the low-cycle range. Less is known about the mechanisms of fatigue failure in the low-cycle range than in the high-cycle range, but it is expected that the processes would have much in common. For example, an important characteristic common to both high-and low-cycle ranges is that fatigue crack propagation can occupy a considerable portion of the total lifetime. This has been shown by Laird and smith4 by a count of the number of ripples present on the fracture surface of copper specimens, each ripple corresponding to one cycle of load. On the other hand, some marked differences have been noted. For example, in copper,5 nickel, and aluminum4 there is a greater tendency for grain boundary cracking to occur as the strain amplitude is increased. The purpose of the present work was to study further the processes leading to fatigue failure in the low-cycle range and to obtain an understanding of the basis for the validity of Coffin's law. Particular attention has been paid to the manner of crack initiation and to the determination of the portion of total lifetime spent in crack propagation. MATERIALS A number of metals and alloys were tested, although more attention was focused on a particular few, once general trends had become apparent. Alloys were selected so as to investigate the effects of crystal structure, number of phases, stacking-fault energy, and impurity content. "The support quality of bolts in deep roadways is one of the important factors for efficient and safe coal production. A new kind of non-destructive testing technique and equipment was used to monitor the axial bolt load in real time in deep roadways. Based on the test results, the working status of bolt support in deep roadways was evaluated. The research results show that the variation characteristics of axial bolt load is consistent with the distribution characteristics of rock pressure no matter whether it is in the initial support stage or mining disturbance stage. The axial load of bolts located 20m outby the development face has an overall rising trend within 3-5 days after installation. Within a certain distance in the front abutment pressure zone in front of the face, the axial bolt load increases with the advance of coal extraction. When coal and rock in the abutment pressure zone yield, the axial bolt load is dropped correspondingly. This kind of non-destructive testing technique provides an advanced means of detection and evaluation on bolt support quality.INTRODUCTIONMany coal seams more than 800m deep are being mined in eastern China. Roadways of large cross-section are being developed in coal seams more than 600m deep in western China (Kang et al. 2014). Moreover, these roadways are commonly supported by roof bolts and have encountered many support problems, including soft rock strata, intense mining disturbance, and abnormal tectonic stress. The stability of its surrounding rocks is difficult to maintain, the roof bolt even fails before mining (Shen 2014; Jiang et al. 2015). Therefore, it is very important to develop an effective method to detect the bolt quality in real time and evaluate the bolt's safety status.During installation of roof bolt, the installation quality is heavily affected by installation equipment and tools, field conditions, and operators' skills (Li et al. 2005; Shan 2009). The anchorage length will be shorter than the designed one if the resin cartridges are pushed to the bottom of excessively long drill hole and stay there without being shredded and mixed. The support function of the bolt would be weakened by the shorter anchorage length."

Monte ? Carlo simulation is often used to assess the risks associated with uncertain variables in mining operations. The success of Monte-Carlo simulations depends upon reproducing the dependencies among variables to some extent. However, some variables may exhibit different dependency patterns. In these cases, classical techniques for dependency quantification cannot capture dependencies. As an alternative, the copulas allow modeling nonlinear dependencies. Furthermore, any choice of marginal distributions can be used. Especially, for the data, which is sensitive to extreme case such as financial crisis, the copulas arise as a means to reproduce the correlations among variables. In this paper, the copulas are introduced to mining practitioners using Monte-Carlo simulations for risk assessment. Then, a case study is given to show the superiority of the copulas over classical techniques using ModelRisk Software. In conclusion, it was observed that the copulas enhance the quality of Monte-Carlo simulations by capturing variable dependencies.

INTRODUCTION My first major involvement on a rock mine slope stability project was in 1966 after I had become a principal of Golder Brawner & Associates in Vancouver, Canada. I received a request from Kennecott to evaluate two serious rock slope failures adjacent to the concentrator on their British Columbia molybdenum property near Alice Arm, BC, which was under construction. A rock slope up to 200 ft* high had been excavated at a design angle of 700. The inspection indicated that several large blocks of about 1000 cu yd each had failed on steeply inclined joint surfaces. Stability was reduced by extensive seepage caused by heavy rainfall. In addition, considerable overbreak had occurred, indicating excessive blasting had been used to excavate the slope. A program was developed to rock bolt potentially unstable blocks that could slide on dipping discontinuities. Some rock was scaled back to the inclined joints, and drain holes were drilled to reduce water pressures. The project was completed successfully and within reasonable economics. As a result of this success, enquiries were received regarding other mining projects. This indicated the potential demand for rock slope engineering. As a result, I took one month off to meet and discuss rock mechanics and slope stability with various people internationally. These included D. Coates in Canada, E. Hoek in England, K. John and L. Mueller in Germany, M. Rocha in Portugal, and the US Bureau of Mines in Denver, CO. Early misconceptions Based on involvement in projects during the next few years, it was concluded that there were a considerable number of misconceptions that existed among some geologists and mining engineers dealing with surface rock mechanics. Some of these included: • Water is a lubricant. This is incorrect. Water reduces the shear strength along discontinuities due to buoyancy, which reduces frictional strength. It also reduces the cohesion of clayey-type rocks. • The optimum pit slope angle in rock is 45°. The optimum slope angle for safety and economics is variable and is influenced particularly by structural geology, water pressures, mine blasting practices, and the depth and degree of weathering. • The flattest angle for slope stability is dictated by the angle of repose of broken rock, about 370. Where clayey-type rocks or clayey infill in discontinuities exists, failure can occur at much flatter angles, requiring flatter slopes or artificial stabilization. • Uniaxial and triaxial tests provide the necessary shear strength parameters to design rock slopes. Most failures in rock slopes are controlled by directional discontinuities. Therefore, the direct shear test is the correct test to evaluate strength parameters for most problems.

The small miner and small mine have an important role to play in the finding, developing and production of our mineral resources. "Help, not hinder" must be our byword. We must push in every way we can devise to change the adversary position of government and environmental movements. We need the small mines and they must be encouraged, not hindered. Technically excellent and adequate equipment is available, and needed information is also available to the small operation. Environmental questions and problems must be fully considered regardless of the size of a mining operation.

In June, 1906, I delivered to the graduating class of Lehigh Cniversity an address upon this subject, the substance of which, with sundry omissions and additions, was subsequently repeated, in October of the same year, in an extempore address before the Schenectady branch of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The latter, as stenographically reported, was published in the Proceedings of that society for November, 1906, and was referred to by President John Hays Hammond in his address at the Chattanooga meeting of October, 1908. Requests have been received from various quarters for the repub-lication of this address by the Institute. This I do not regard as necessary or proper; but I yield to that demand so far as to reproduce in the Transactions a summary of my views, as expressed in the two addresses above mentioned.

Ancient mining and Zimbabwe T. N. HUFFMAN*. Ph.D. (Illinois) (Visitor) Ancient gold mining and Zimbabwe have been commonly associated for over a hundred years, either in terms of an exotic colony for gold export or as an African state based on the East Coast trade. The stratigraphy and radiocarbon dates from Zimbabwe and the known sequence for the Rhodesian Iron Age demonstrate that Zimbabwe was built after AD. 1000. A review of the evidence for ancient gold mining shows a similar antiquity, and a complementary rise in prosperity in Arab settlements on the East Coast indicates that gold was not extensively mined until the eleventh century. Large quantities of imported articles at Zimbabwe indicate the extent of trading during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the origins of Zimbabwe probably lay in an overflow of wealth from the gold trade during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Zimbabwe was abandoned by the sixteenth century because of environmental factors.

This report presents the results of a 7-year Bureau of Mines program to review, revise, and make an effective engineering tool of the microseismic method of determining the stability of rock structures. The program consisted of developing new microseismic equipment and data analysis techniques and extensive field investigations to demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of the broad-band microseismic method. The guidelines for choosing the components of a microseismic system are presented along with approximate cost figures. Different microseismic systems are discussed, including completely automated systems. Procedures for conducting microseismic investigations and analyzing microseismic data are discussed in detail. Field situations which show the full value of the microseismic technique as an engineering tool are described.

Pegmatites of these areas have become important sources of beryl and lepidolite and have yielded cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, and other minerals. Examination of about 60 of these pegmatites leads the author to question the opinion of earlier investigators that the concentrations of beryl, lepidolite, and columbite-tantalite found have mostly formed by hydrothermal or pneumatolytic replacement of previously formed quartz-feldspar pegmatites. The author concludes, on the contrary, that present knowledge of the occurrence of minerals in zoned pegmatites can be applied to prospecting and mining of pegmatite deposits in these two areas of South West Africa. PEGMATITES occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War II prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa. The writer visited the two pegmatite areas in July 1951. The visit was brief. but it gave an opportunity to compare some of the' pegmatites of these areas with those studied and described in detail by many investigators in the U. S., Brazil, and Canada during and since World War 11.'-l' The writer has attempted to determine, in a preliminary way, whether the concepts of internal structure and distribution of minerals in pegmatite bodies developed out of these studies are applicable to prospecting and exploration of pegmatites in South West Africa. Previous Work In an important series of papers (1929 to 1942) T. W. Gevers, H. I?. Frommurze, S. H. Haughton, G. K. Joubert, and other geologists of the Geological Survey of South Africa described and discussed the pegmatites of the two areas.*-" These works are the principal sources of information on the pegmatite mineral deposits of South West Africa. The investigations showed that in the two areas pegmatites are profusely distributed in pre-Cambrian rocks. These rocks are meta-igneous and metasedimentary units that have been folded and subsequently invaded by younger pre-Cambrian granites and by other igneous rocks. The pegmatites are considered to be genetically related to the pre-Cambrian granites. Pegmatites occur in the granite bodies themselves but are most abundant in the surrounding metamor-phic rocks, a pattern repeated in many pegmatite districts of the world. The origin of the pegmatites and the factors controlling the occurrence of mineral deposits in them were discussed at length by Gevers and Frommurze (1929)" and later by Gevers 14, 15 pp. 41-51, Ref.
