This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract H0292025. The purpose of this project was to prove the feasibility of detecting hazards in a coal seam using a synthetic pulse radar. This work was conducted in three phases. The first was an analysis of the types of errors which might cause problems. The second was to build a breadboard radar and the third phase was to conduct a field test with the system. The work from each phase is discussed and the results of the field tests are presented. These results show propagation of the radar signal through 200 feet of coal along with reflections from 50 feet away. The final section contains recommendations for future development.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN 1911, we published in the Transactions a brief account of the lateritic alterations of serpentine in eastern Cuba, producing the important iron-ore deposits of the Mayari and Moa districts.1 The special feature of that article was a quantitative treatment of the alterations, based on analyses, to show just what had happened in terms of chemical, mineralogical, and physical changes. Professor Kemp has published an interesting account of these ores, containing additional quantitative observations of his own, tending essentially to confirm the nature of the changes that bad been worked out.2 His discussion suggests to us the desirability of publishing certain additional quantitative data which were not included in our previous article. This seems especially desirable because quantitative measurements of lateritic alterations are rare, and this particular case may be regarded as typical of a fairly wide range of alterations of this kind. At the time of our examination of Mayari and Moa, deposits 29 complete analyses were supplied us by the chemists of the Spanish-American Iron Co., representing a graded series from the unaltered serpentine rock below to the ore at the surface. These analyses are given in the accompanying table. The mineralogical composition of the ores and rocks is comparatively simple and can be easily calculated from the analyses. In Fig. 1 the mineralogical changes from the serpentine rock below to the lateritic iron ore above, based on the analyses, are expressed in terms of weight, assuming alumina to have remained constant during the alteration. It is not easy by mere inspection of this table of analyses to determine what the progressive chemical changes have been in development of the ore. In order to bring this out clearly, the analyses have been graphically represented in Fig. 2 in such a fashion as to show the progressive additions and losses of substances during alteration.

A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of a high density, high velocity cartridged explosive. The tests included two production blasts in a limestone quarry and two production blasts in a granite quarry. To quantify blast and product performance, each blast was monitored with the following equipment: l Two (16mm (Lo Cam) high speed cameras (500 images per second) l Velocity of detonation recorder (I million samples per second) l Four face motion accelerometers (1 million samples per second) l Digital seismograph The fragmentation distribution produced by each blast was quantified with digital image analysis The benefits of the use of high velocity, high density toe loading was quantified in terms of: l Vibration reduction l Fragmentation improvement l Excavator performance In addition to the field tests, a comprehensive evaluation was performed to determine the cost/benefit relationship of the use of the toe load. This paper will include the findings of the study along with guidelines for use in other quarry operations.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

GEOPHYSICAL exploration is continuing to expand in scope and variety of methods, in experimental studies of specific applications, and in development of theory for complex situations. Aerial surveys have been made economically more attractive by simultaneous recording of magnetic and radioactivity data, and aerial electromagnetic surveys have been attempted. The most significant success of mining geophysics was the discovery of huge lead-zinc-copper sulphide ore deposits in New Brunswick, Canada. Spectacular geophysical astivity has occurred in the area as a result of these discoveries, and geophysics is expected to continue to play a large role in this drift-covered area. Other developments this year find the Atomic Energy Commission making available monthly reports of the location of anomalous radioactivity detected in aerial and ground surveys and the AEC is installing supersensitive radioactivity assaying instruments in about 25 localities in the U. S. Interest in helicopters is being aroused because of potentialities for near-ground surveys and better location control of anomalies. Japan can be added to the list of countries using geophysical surveys extensively.

As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

Discussion of the paper of FRANK ALFRED FAHRENWALD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 103 to 149. F. A. FAHRENWALD, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).-Since the publication of my paper in the January Bulletin, (which was largely a metallographic treatise), I have been questioned regarding two points referred to therein. One of these is that which deals with the application I have made, p. 119, of the equation for melting pressures which correspond with different working temperatures. The other refers to the statement, p. 137, that "Prolonged heating at relatively low temperatures gave fewer and larger crystals and crystals of different sizes, while a flashing at higher temperatures gave a very fine and uniform crystalline structure, which was much' to be preferred." Especial emphasis was not placed upon either of these two factors, for each seemed perfectly logical and obvious. As they do not seem to be self-explanatory, I will supplement with those portions of my notes which were purposely omitted from the manuscript submitted for publication. A few practical illustrations may serve as evidence in support of the first of these, but it must be understood that in this work the "amorphous theory" is considered as being sound, and that it is assumed that metals allow of distortion, without fracture, by virtue of the formation of slip surfaces, accompanied by the transformation of crystalline material to the, amorphous phase. Effect of Pressure.-In all forging, rolling, and drawing operations, it is known that specimens of small cross-section may be worked at a lower temperature than can be used for the same material in much greater mass and sectional area. In -the larger pieces the maximum pressure is brought to bear upon the material near the surface, so that the interior is not subjected to great pressure, but to, a stress more nearly tensile, or shearing, so only the surface is subjected to the critical melting pressure. In the case of wires which draw hollow, the center is subjected to practically a tensile stress which breaks it, while the surface skin draws perfectly, due to the enormous "flowing" pressure exerted upon it by the surface of the draw-plate.

"Levees in the central valley of California are primarily for flood control purposes and thus are subjected to infrequent hydraulic loading. The primary concern for these levees is their instability due to through and under seepage. Primary seepage control measures are seepage cutoff walls and/or seepage berms. The cutoff walls primarily consist of soil-bentonite (SB) slurry walls. The seepage berm could be a drainage blanket to allow the seepage with controlled exit gradient or an impervious layer to provide enough cover to protect any adverse effects of seepage in terms of sand boils. Although, Sacramento is an area of moderate seismic activity, levees protecting urban areas require assessment for the potential instability due to liquefaction and associated vertical and lateral deformations. In certain cases, the seismic deformations of the levee may not compromise the stability of the levees, but they may cause damage to the seepage control measures. Depending on the nature and extent of the damage, the mitigation measures may require limited or full replacement of the seepage control measures. This paper will provide a systematic assessment of these different types of seepage control measures under vertical and lateral deformations due to liquefaction and lateral spreading under seismic loadings.INTRODUCTIONThere are two broad categories of levees in Central California: levees that are subjected to continuous hydraulic loading such as delta levees and are called frequently loaded levees (FLL) and flood control levees that are subjected to seasonal or infrequent hydraulic loading, called infrequently loaded levees (ILL). This paper will focus on the seismic response of ILL. The probability of ILL experiencing an earthquake at the time of the design flood is very low. Therefore, consequences of seismic failure of flood control levees are only significant in terms of response time required to restore the level of flood protection provided by the levee before the next flood season. An example for this restoration is the restoration of the Pajaro River levees in Santa Cruz, California after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Nevertheless, failure of flood control levees due to a seismic event could result in loss of the entire levee and/or loss of freeboard. In addition, some of the seismic failure of ILL levees may result in loss of seepage control measures such as the soil-bentonite wall.The State of California State approved Senate Bill (SB) 5 in 2007 that mandates for 200-year flood protection to be the minimum level of protection for urban and urbanizing areas in Central California (Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley) by the year 2025. This legislation also requires that urban and urbanizing areas protected by Federal project levees cannot use adequate progress as a condition to approve development after 2025. SB 5 requires that the urban level of flood protection be consistent with criteria used or developed by DWR (Government Code § 65007(k)). To avoid delaying urgently needed flood protection, Urban Levee Design Criteria (ULDC, 2012) was developed."

Pink Tennessee Marble was tested for wedge bit penetration characteristics at static and dynamic (10 - 250 ft/sec) loading rates. No significant differences were found within the dynamic range as far as the energy required to remove a unit crater volume and the force used to cause a certain penetration. Under static loading, however, both the energy and the force required were significantly lower. Tests run on bits of varying width indicated that as the wedge bit narrowed to an almost conical shape, the energy used per unit crater volume became considerably lower.

"INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. In some instances the towns were entirely under the control of officials of mining companies, being on company property whereas, in other instances, the towns wars incorporated not under company management. The torsional deformation of aluminum and magnesium crystals is investigated, with particular reference to the dependence of proportional limit on crystal orientation. The proportional limit is found to be governed by the average value of the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip systems, but the proportional limit does not strictly obey a critical-resolved-shear-stress law. The behavior of a cylindrical single crystal stressed in tension is well known: plastic flow begins when the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip system reaches a critical value. There is much less understanding of the effect of torsion on such a crystal and on the way in which the critical-resolved-shear-stress law should be applied to torsional deformation. In the present paper particular attention is paid to the dependence of plastic yielding on crystal orientation and lesser attention to the mechanism of flow after yielding has occurred. New work on aluminum and magnesium crystals is presented, and previous results obtained in this laboratory on magnesium1 are re-examined. STRESS DISTRIBUTION The problems involved in torsional deformation of single crystals are due entirely to the complexity of the stress distribution. In tension, if loading conditions are perfect, the shear stress on any particular slip plane is completely uniform over the entire area of that plane. In torsion, on the other hand, the stress on any selected plane in a particular direction varies not only from center to edge of the specimen but also around its perimeter. It is convenient to express the stress at any point in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface of a cylindrical specimen on a plane normal to the axis and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. At point P of Fig. 1 this stress acts in the direction of axis 2 and is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. This stress can be resolved on any chosen slip system, and details are given in the Appendix. The application of a horizontal inclinometer and a tiltmeter to measure tilt, curvature, and deformations of shallow footings during mine subsidence is described. The measurements were taken during mining of a longwall panel in Southern Illinois and were supplemented with precision level survey data. Monitoring was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the Institute for Geotechnology at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the National Science Foundation, the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, and Old Ben Coal Company. Six different footings were constructed and instrumented at two sites; one above the panel centerline, and the second inside the edge of the panel in the anticipated zone of maximum tension. A brief description of the inclinometer casing and tiltplate installation is described, and the results obtained from the two instruments on a plain concrete footing compared. Observations of footing deformations and curvatures calculated from the inclinometer and tiltmeter data are also presented, and the results compared with observed structural damage.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

The Bureau of Mines has programmed for publication a series of Reports of Investigations of studies it has undertaken on low-temperature phase equilibria of several helium-bearing natural gases. This report is the second of a series of papers of the same general title; it is anticipated that additional reports of this series will be published. The advent of a helium conservation program and the prospect of production of helium by private industry, make it especially desirable to publish these data. This report describes phase equilibria related to a natural gas that is processed for helium at the Bureau's Exell Helium Plant (located about 35 miles north of Amarillo, Tex.). Carbon dioxide and water in the gas were removed before making the study; hence the data obtained are representative of the gas stream immediately after similar preliminary treatment in the plant process. Phase equilibrium data were obtained for conditions from -50° to -275° F. and from 100 to 500 p.s.i.a. Analyses of samples were made as follows: For a given run at a selected temperature and pressure, samples of the vapor and liquid phases were analyzed by mass spectrometer, and an additional sample of the liquid phase was analyzed for helium by means of special apparatus (7). 4

This study is concerned with the behavior of bubble clusters in a well-controlled turbulent flow. We used a specially designed cell where the bubble aggregates could be formed and exposed to breakage by a rotating impeller. The effects of impeller speed and the concentration of collector on cluster behavior were studied. It was found that the size of the clusters increases with the concentration of collector used. We also found that although the clusters could easily be destroyed under the action of impeller, they could reform, especially at lower impeller speeds. It was observed that the size of the bubbles arriving into the impeller region in the absence of particles before breakage was considerably higher than the size of the clusters formed at the same impeller speed. It appears that both cluster breakage and re-formation take place simultaneously, and the extent of formation and regrowth is mainly determined by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the impeller speed.
