Surface soil/spoil Samples (0-10 cm) from experimental test sites in western North Dakota were aseptically collected during August 1975 and each month (May through September) during 1076 and 1977. Selected samples were Cultured in a defined inorganic medium and after six weeks the algae were identified. Chlorophyll u content of the soil/spoil was used as a measure of the algal abundance. Soil physical-chemical properties, species variety and abundance were statistically analyzed. All test sites revealed distinct soil algal communities and demonstrated a successional trend as evidenced by significant increase, in species variety and bionmass over time. Some soil factors, calcium, copper, and phosphorus affected species variety and abundance at more than one situ. Others were important at specific sites; silicon and aluminum at the South Beulah test site; manganese sodium and zinc at the North Beulah test site No. 1 and boron, cadmium and magnesium at the North Beulah test site No. 2. Topsoiled areas had higher species varieties and abundances when compared with control areas, as did plots treated with amendments such as leonardite and fertilizer Generally.

To improve mining safety and efficiency by providing a practical way of detecting faults and channel sands that disturb coal seams. Approach A seismic system using a shallow blasthole has been developed and tested. How It Works A small shock is caused in a shallow hole, sending seismic waves through the ground. These waves are reflected from the top of the coal seam, acid are detected by a line of geophones on the earth's surface. Dampening of the seismic signals by channel sands and other discontinuities in the seam is detected and recorded. See Figure 1. The seismic shock wave can be produced by exploding small charges, dropping a weight, firing a gas gun, or actuating a vibrator. Depending on the soil cover, the shock is usually generated in shallow vertical holes about 10 feet deep. Hole depth depends on the soil mantle thickness because it is preferable that the seismic shock originate below that layer.

In 1948 the shaft sinking record in the Republic of South Africa was held by the Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd. for a ventilation shaft with a footage of 461 ft sunk during the month of August 1941. This record remained for some ten years; but in the ensuing nine years it was broken no less than 13 times. Table I gives shaft sinking records throughout the world for the 21 years, 1940 to 1960. History shows that the wide, deep, timbered rectangular shaft had passed its peak of popularity by 1948, although it still had a great deal to commend it, both from the sinking and operational points of view. In sinking, it is easy to clean manually, and water can be handled by bailing when wet ground has to be negotiated; its shape also lends itself to equipping concurrently with sinking. In operation it provides the most convenient "in line" hoisting arrangement, and if the ventilation requirements so demand, it offers the simplest solution in that it can be divided into upcast and downcast sections. Furthermore, in the case of a multi-level mine, the shaft compartments can be reduced conveniently if the full area of the shaft is not required to serve all levels.

The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. "Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. "We present detailed comparisons between theoretical predictions and experiments for the initiation of radial hydraulic fractures transverse to a wellbore. Most of these experiments provide a measure of the time evolution of pressure, length, opening and flux entering the fracture during the test. We compare all these measurements simultaneously to our theoretical predictions, thoroughly testing hydraulic fracture initiation theory, which is shown to be predictive. These comparisons notably emphasize the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure for which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during the test). INTRODUCTION In this paper, we will compare hydraulic fracturing laboratory experiments performed in different tight materials (PMMA, cement, shale) with the predictions from a numerical solution of the governing equations of hydraulic fracture mechanics (e.g. Geerstma & de Klerk, 1969; Detournay & Peirce, 2014). We focus on transverse radial hydraulic fractures initiating from a radial notch at the wellbore wall (see Figure 1). In particular, we will clarify the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure at which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during a test, usually carried out at constant pump rate). This difference stems from the strong viscous effects at play during wellbore pressurization, fracture initiation and early propagation (i.e. fluid entrance in the newly created fracture). It has been observed on a number of experiments (e.g. Weijers, 1995; Zhao et al., 1996) and has a strong practical application, first because the maximum pressure is the most obvious value to report and second because that maximum value is necessary to specify injection systems."

THE questions as to what grades of ore it pays to conserve for the future, and the valuation of low-grade reserves, are becoming immediate and definite as applied to individual ore deposits, and seem to call for some sort of quantitative answer. Both opinion and practice involving these questions differ widely. The number of variables in this problem is so large that final solution will perhaps never be agreed upon, yet there seem to me to be certain controlling factors which can be placed in quantitative relation and serve to reduce the number of variables which it is necessary to consider in a given instance. I assume that it will not pay either for the individual or for the State to conserve any ore when the present cost of conservation (by stock piling or otherwise), when compounded at 6 per cent. interest for the number of years which would elapse before this ore is used, will exceed the profit which the ore will yield when it is used. It may be urged that any loss to the individual may be made up in gain to the State. This might be true if there was any definite limit to the amount of iron ore, but when we remember that iron makes up .4 per cent. of all the rocks of the earth and the amount of rock carrying iron in excess of 20 per cent. is for practical purposes, unlimited, it is apparent that posterity is assured of its iron ore. The changes will be mainly in methods and cost of extracting the ore. Therefore, any expenditure of money or effort now, which when compounded will exceed the worth of the effort or money needed in the future to utilize the iron, is a net loss both to the individual and to the community.

Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

In an effort to minimize cutter roof failures in longwall development entries of a West Virginia coal mine, a three-entry system was developed with the center entry arched into the strata above the coal seam. The purpose of the arched entry was to modify the horizontal stress envelope associated with the three-entry system and improve roof conditions in the adjacent outside entries. Contrary to the predictions of elastic analyses, the presence of the arched entry improved roof conditions by eliminating cutter roof failures in the outside entries. In-situ stress determinations and numerical modeling techniques were employed to quantify the impact of the arch and investigate the mechanism of stress relief associated with the arched entry. Stress determinations and underground observations indicated that the roofs of the outside entries were within the zone of stress relief generated by the arch, and that failure or movement along bedding plane discontinuities played a major role in the formation of the stress relieved zone. The numerical model incorporated horizontal joints to simulate bedding plane discontinuities. The properties of the joints were adjusted until roof stresses predicted by the model were in agreement with measured stress profiles. This process resulted in a calibrated analytical tool that could be used to evaluate alternate mining geometries.

This report describes a study designed to evaluate a proposed modification in the cap lamp battery cord intented to reduce the incidence of snagging and catching of the cord. A three phase evaluation as performed comparing a prototype with the standard, currently available cord. First, a "pull test" equipment was run. The second evaluation was a body conformity study. The third evaluation involved subjects performing common tasks in a low seam coal mine simulator. The results of these evaluations clearly demonstrated significant safety advantages of incorporating coiled cord into the design of the cap cord. The coil cord presented less of a snagging hazard, allowed the wearer more time to respond to a snag, and transmitted lower levels of force to the helmet when snagged. The research team recommended that cap lamp cords be commercially developed which incorporate coiled cord at the battery and helmet.

Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high- pressure roll mill. As compared to individually ground minerals, the harder component (quartz) in the product mixture is coarser, and the softer component (limestone) is finer. An energy split index is introduced for quantifying the disproportionate split of the mill energy between the feed constituents. This index is incorporated into a grinding kinetic model for simulation of the product size distributions of the mineral components as a function of energy input to the mill. The self-similar character of the size distributions is analyzed and an energy-size reduction relationship for the roll mill is highlighted.

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peu¬vent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matière de charge.

THE most effective means of strengthening hot-rolled ferritic steels are grain refinement and precipitation hardening. It is well-known that grain refinement increases both the strength and the toughness. However, the upper limit of yield strength obtainable by grain refinement alone is about 60,000 psi,'12 i.e., without the formation of acicular structures of lower toughness. The most economical means of obtaining higher strengths is the addition of small amounts of elements such as columbium, vanadium, and titanium which form carbonitrides. These precipitates are very effective in increasing the strength, but the ductile-brittle transition temperature is is Although it is agreed upon that precipitation decreases the toughness, there has been little effort to isolate the causative aspects of embrittlement. The purposes of this research are to assess quantitatively the embrittlement associated with different precipitate distributions and morphologies, and to correlate the degree of the embrittlement with the microstruc-ture. In this manner, a more fundamental insight into the mechanism of embrittlement may be gained. The steel selected for this purpose was a low-carbon, columbium-bearing steel which, after solution treatment, was aged in various time-temperature cycles while attempting to hold all other microstructural variables constant. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The composition of the steel used in this investigation is given in Table I. Starting with commercially hot-rolled material 0.074 and 0.280 in. thick, tensile blanks were cut from the thinner material and sub-size Charpy blanks from the thicker stock. The steel had been rolled using a low finishing temperature and rapid cooling after hot rolling to produce grain refinement. Also, chemical-extraction analysis and electron-microscopic examination revealed that the cooling was rapid enough to suppress any significant precipitation of CbC. Therefore, the as-rolled steel is essentially in the solution-treated condition in terms of the precipitation reaction, and it was used as the base material in this investigation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the as-rolled steel aged at 1100", 1150", and 1200°F for various time intervals were determined, see Table 11. The ductile-brittle transition behavior was studied for smooth and notched tensile specimens, and longitudinal half-size (0.200 in. thick) Charpy V notch specimens aged at 1100" and 1150°F for various times, also Table 11. In addition, tensile specimens aged for single times at 1050" and 1200°F were evaluated with respect to their ductile-brittle transition. Only one 1050°F treatment was used because of the extremely slow kinetics of precipitation at this temperature and because no significant difference between 1100°F aging was observed. Only one treatment at 1200°F was used because aging at this temperature alters the shape of the grain boundary cementite particles present in this steel and complicates analysis. The design of the tensile specimens is given in Fig.1.

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. The progress in comminution is often described by the specific surface area and the energy utilization or the brakeage ratio and breakage function. The principal mechanisms of size reduction are therefore, well known. All four parameters share a common disadvantage: They are limited in describing the behavior of a feed material with fine particles and a wide particle size distribution. An alternative is to describe the progress in comminution with ? The particle size distributions Q(x) before and after the stress or ? The particle concentration ratio pcr(x), which combines these two states. In the case of a self-similar fracture behavior, (in short: self-similarity) the progress in comminution can be simplistically described by the relationship between a reference particle size and the stress intensity. Self-similarity means self-similar breakage functions of geometrically similar particles of the same strength, a certain stress situation and stresses up to the breakage point. Self-similar breakage functions show the same curve at different stress intensities when the fragment size x is normalized with a reference particle size xNorm. This behavior was demonstrated for single particle comminution repeatedly and unequivocally. In the field of particle bed comminution, these results differ in literature. Therefore, the self-similarity in particle bed comminution was systematically investigated at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg as part of a research project. Limestone, quartz, silicon carbide and glass beads, were examined with a hydraulic press. The particle sizes covered monodisperse fractions in the range of 1-1000 µm, bimodal mixtures of these fractions and polydisperse fractions. The results obviously show that there is no self-similar fracture behavior in the case of glass beads, quartz and silicon carbide. Statements on the self-similarity of limestone are much more difficult: Only some of the investigated limestone fractions show a similar clear, non-self-similar behavior. Self-similar curves appear particularly for fine monodisperse fractions as well as bimodal mixtures, which stressed with pressures above 200 MPa. Considering the measurement accuracy of particle size analysis the coincidence of the curves can be explained by the fact that progress in comminution almost ends above 200 MPa. At this point, a hydrostatic stress state is reached in the particle bed which is known from the literature. This stress state inhibits further fractures. Overall, it has been verified for the investigated materials that there?s no self-similar fracture behavior in particle bed comminution. One reason for the diverse opinions in literature is that there are three types of particles after the comminution in the particle bed: ? Particles which are stressed below their breaking point, ? Particles which are stressed right up to the break point, and ? Particles which are stressed beyond their breaking point.

The improvement in the quality of cast iron by means of alloy additions has been a metallurgical accomplishment of recent years. Work in this field has shown that chromium is one of the most effective of such additions but, in general, the influence of chromium has been studied only in connection with other alloying additions, with irons other than foundry irons, or with relatively high percentages of chromium. The present study was initiated for the purpose of determining the influence of small additions of chromium (0.25 to 1.00 per cent) on the quality and resultant properties of cast irons of various foundry grades. The effect of small chromium additions on cast iron was investigated with particular reference to casting characteristics, hardness vs. section, strength, machinability, heat resistance and structure. Material Tested Three separate types of cast iron were investigated as to the effect of small chromium additions. The first series of these irons was prepared from remelted foundry cast iron at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, and the other two series consisted of cupola melts made under usual operating conditions. The first series was made by melting 30-lb. charges of foundry scrap iron containing 2.86 per cent carbon, 2.72 silicon, 0.50 manganese, 0.062 sulfur and 0.794 phosphorus in a carbon resistance furnace. The chromium was added as high-carbon ferrochrome just before pouring. The irons were cast at approximately 1250" C. (2282" F.). The analysis and physical properties of these irons are given in Table 1, test 1. The second set of cast irons was made in a cupola in accordance with normal practice, the charge containing approximately 42 per cent steel scrap and the chromium additions being made to the ladle. Analysis and tests of these heats are shown in Table 1, test 2. A small amount of copper was present in heat C of this series. Further data on the effect of chromium on strength were obtained from a third series of 13 cupola heats containing from 0.06 to 0.50 per cent chromium and made without steel additions. La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n'y avait qu'un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n'était pas rentable d'avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L'option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d'explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l'utilisation d'émulsion pompée en vrac.
