INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. A primary goal of the Federal Bureau of Mines is to minimize the requirements for scarce mineral commodities through conservation and substitution of more abundant elements, such as iron and molybdenum. One example of this is the research effort to devise substitute materials for specialty alloys, thereby conserving nickel and chromium in high-volume stainless steels. As a possible substitute for the solid solution strengthening of chromium and nickel, the precipitation hardening characteristics of a number of binary iron-based systems in which Laves phase precipitates, such as Fe2Mo, are formed were investigated. Several hardening responses were observed, but none were ideal. The Fe-Ta binary system had the highest magnitude of hardening, even with low alloy additions, and the Fe-Mo system had unique stability at temperature. Accordingly, the Fe-Mo-Ta system was selected for study to determine if a ternary Laves phase could combine high hardening with long-term stability at elevated temperature. Hardening and stability were reflected in excellent elevated temperature, tensile, and stress rupture strengths. Future research will study ternary systems based on more abundant resource materials, such as the Fe-Mo-Ti system, together with additions, such as aluminum and minimal chromium, to provide oxidation resistance.

Blocking. (5) The “blocking” of boulders is a much cheaper way of breaking them up than “mud capping.” It should always be used in preference to that method except when too much time will be consumed by a crew of men waiting for the drilling to be done, as shown in example of cost No. 1, as given under “mud capping.” Under such circumstances the time consumed would be a greater cost to the contractor than the extra amount of dynamite. Then, too, on large thin boulders to drill one hole would result only in breaking the stone into such pieces as would again have to be broken; and the many holes might equal the cost of extra dynamite. Under such circumstances if method (6) cannot be used, “mud capping” will have to be resorted to, to do the work economically.

Carbonaceous gold ores are particularly attractive for leaching by ammonium thiosulfate as the gold thiosulfate complex is not significantly adsorbed by the organic carbon present in the ore. A technically and economically feasible process for treating these ores with ammonium thiosulfate has been developed. In this process, gold is extracted by leaching the ore with ammonium thiosulfate, the solution is separated from the ore by counter - current decantation, the gold is recovered by precipitation with ammonium sulfide, and finally the gold containing product is upgraded by reacting the elemental sulfur present in the precipitate with ammonium sulfite. The precipitation filtrate is recycled back to the grinding step to close the solution balance. Reagent consumption is not excessive. Besides precipitating gold, the precipitation step removes most deleterious solution impurities and converts a portion of the polythionates back to thiosulfate. This paper discusses the optimization of the leaching, precipitation, and upgrading steps. The results of a 10 kg/h pilot plant campaign are also discussed.

SLAG weights were taken on a series of twenty-eight 6-ton bottom-pour heats. These weights varied from 573 to 1050 lb. Of these, four were chosen for study of the effect of cleaned and uncleaned foundry scrap on the variations of slag weights. Data regarding the make-up and results of the heats are given in Table I. For heat No. 3 the actual slag weight was checked, using the Mn-MnO calculation method-weight 1050 lb. Three test pile programs were conducted in Charleston, South Carolina to evaluate differences in bearing resistance due to installation methods. The tested piles were installed with impact hammers and vibratory drivers through soft clays and/or loose sands into the Cooper Marl, a stiff calcareous marine clay or silt. Piles driven into the Cooper Marl experience significant capacity gain with time following initial installation due largely to pore pressure dissipation. Pile size and pile type were both known to affect pore pressure generation during installation and subsequently the capacity gain with time. The test programs were primarily conducted to optimize pile design values and construction methods with regard to trestle construction but the results also contribute to the understanding of driven pile behavior. High strain dynamic testing was performed on several open-end pipe and H-piles. The measured difference in long-term bearing capacity of the H-piles as a result of the two installation methods was negligible, while the short-term bearing capacity of the pipe pile was larger when the piles were installed using impact hammers. The lower short-term resistance in the vibratory driven piles is attributed to larger excess pore pressures generated during installation compared to those generated during impact driving.

A series of commercial titanium diboride powders have been characterized in terms of X-ray crystallography, composition, particle size distribution, and particle shape. These materials were used in sintering experiments from which the effect of impurities on the sintering temperature was observed. Transmission electron microscopic observations have been made on Ion milled and chemically milled hot pressed material. Dislocations have been observed as well as grain boundary phases. Limited bonding between grains seems to account for poor mechanical properties. Observations have been made of preferred crystallographic orientation in hot pressed material.

Manganese has long been considered one of the United States' most important strategic raw materials. Its indispensabil-ity in steel manufacture makes it vital to the nation's industrial life. Coupled with this indispensability is the fact that domestic producers have not been able as yet to supply more than a small part of the nation's manganese needs; consequently the United States has had to depend upon such distant foreign sources as the U.S.S.R., British India, the African Gold Coast and Brazil for the major portion of its ore. The great bulk of the mineral is consumed in the form of ferromanganese, an alloy that averages 80 per cent manganese and 20 per cent mainly iron and carbon. Manganese is used as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in steel manufacture. By combination with the residual oxygen and sulphur of the bath, it helps to produce a clean, sound metal. Approximately 14 lb. of manganese, it is estimated, is used in making one ton of steel. For standard-grade ferromanganese, the ore should have a minimum of about 48 per cent Mn and preferably more. Beneficiation methods have not yet been developed for making the immense low-grade deposits in the United States salable at prevailing prices. Dependence upon foreign sources thrust the United States into serious difficulties during the World War. At the start of hostilities in 1914, the nation was obtaining about four-fifths of its ore from the Eastern Hemisphere. Domestic production had been negligible, amounting to only 3000 to 7000 tons a year. As the war continued, shipments from the East, endangered by sea attack and blockade, dwindled rapidly. Imports from Brazil mounted. In this grave emergency, the United States, starting almost from scratch and under the stimulus of high prices, succeeded by 1918 in producing a peak of 3II,000 tons, about 35 per cent of its consumption that year. Since the war, the United States has depended upon foreign sources for more than nine-tenths of its high-grade ore. During 1936, 1937 and 1938, imports for consumption averaged 736,000 tons a year. During the same period, domestic shipments averaged 21,000 tons a year. Of the imports, the U.S.S.R. accounted for an annual average of 280,000 tons, the Gold Coast 208,000 tons, India 74,000 tons, and Brazil 72,500 tons. But India and Brazil, which in 1936 ranked third and fourth in the list of importers, were displaced in 1937 and 1938 by a new and much nearer source—Cuba. From less than I per cent of United States imports in 1931, the island republic increased its shipments to more than 27 per cent in 1938. A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon.' Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract. CONTACT ANGLE AND OIL ATTRACTION The contact angle-the angle formed by a fluid-fluid boundary when both are in contact with a solid-has been indicted several times for complicity in the phenomenon of flotation. This angle is supposed to indirectly measure the surface energy of a solid. Thus if we have two fluids in contact with a solid, we may express the difference between the two fluid-solid tensions as equal to the fluid-fluid tension times the cosine of the angle between the two fluids.4 If the two fluids are in contact with the solid, this is, no doubt, an excellent way of establishing relative surface energies. The practice of stripping copper starter sheets from titanium blanks to be used in a conventional electrolytic tankhouse has been around since the advent of Electrometallurgy. Historically it has been done manually, utilizing many people to produce in some cases thousands of starter sheets per day. Some other conventional tankhouses have successfully converted to using mechanical means to strip starter sheets or have made the switch to permanent cathodes and although robotics have been around for quite some time they have not been used to strip starter sheets until recently. The Amarillo Copper Refinery began using robotics to strip several years ago and the details to how this came about and how the robots work will be described. INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting and Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co- products (Marcosson, 1949). Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills and two solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants all in Arizona plus a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas. Figure 1 illustrates how the copper metal comes out of the ground at the mine and ends up as a refined product at the refinery The copper refinery in Texas is known as the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR) and is located in Amarillo, Texas. It was built in 1975 to replace 3 other aging refineries and was designed to produce 550,000 tons (500,000 MT) of refined copper per year using conventional starter sheet technology. At the time it was commissioned it was the largest tankhouse in the world at just under 1/2 miles long under one roof.

The amount of research done in the last fen years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Deschl in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 19362 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for it? review and bibliography is an article by 14. I. Krynitsky.~ While considerable material lias appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertaining to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approximately the same composition alpha brass has been determined :it three temperatures. Procedure The method used consisted of plating copper on a beta brass, heating it, to allow diffusion to take place, and measuring the concentration of copper by determining the lattice constant of the alloy. This method is unique in that it uses a beta brass of such a composition that at the tem perature at which diffusion takes place the beta brass is saturated wit11 copper. Mineralogical analysis contributes directly to the selection of applicable beneficiation techniques for a given site. Tentative remediation methods for use on the Sharon Steel tailings in Midvale, Salt lake County, UT, were determined in part by mineralogical characterization. A systematic characterization scheme was employed to identify mineral species, mineral associations, and grain size. This paper presents the mineral content and distribution data collected for site characterization. This data was used to determine areas that were representative of the total tailings at the Sharon Steel site. Although this was the main focus of characterization, other useful information was obtained. The approximate location of "old jig tails" was identified and insight on possible arsenic, mobility through the pile was also obtained from the mineralogical study.

Rope-type haulage has had many applications in the mining and allied industries. Records have indicated favorable results both from a standpoint of efficiency and investment. The Truax-Traer Coal Co. has used some variations of rope haulage at their mines and preparation plants. They have built a system which solves their particular problems, and have an investment which has indicated an annual savings in operating costs. Rope haulage, as applied to the mining industry, goes back many years for both underground and surface mining, or a combination of both. The Truax-Traer Coal Co. has used gravity retarding hoists as well as several variations of rope haulage, including electrical and combinations of both, but each was limited in its use and application by natural conditions and economies of the operation. Several systems of rope haulage equipment are offered by manufacturers today for handling railroad car movement on a limited or continuous basis. The portal and railroad loading facilities of Truax-Traer Coal Co.'s Burning Star Slope mine, located in Jackson County, Ill., were moved in 1960. The old location was abondoned, eliminating 3% miles of underground track haulage. The mine was converted to an all-belt system, and coal is loaded at a new raw coal plant and shipped by railroad cars to a central cleaning plant. The company wanted to operate the surface facilities as efficiently as possible, employing a minimum number of workers, using the latest type railroad car movers. The existing rope haulage facilities at several locations throughout the country were examined and considered for the Slope mine location. The application of each appeared favorable but lacked flexibility, and it was difficult to justify the capital investment. The company decided to investigate the possibility of building a system that would apply to their problem, and have an investment that could be amortized in a relatively short period. SPECIFICATIONS They employed the services of Allen and Garcia Co. of Chicago, Ill. Through combined efforts, a railroad car rope system was designed to specifications as shown in Fig. 1. The Falk Corp. of Milwaukee, Wis. built the hoist to the specifications as shown in Fig. 2. It has an all welded base and pedestals. The all welded drum is not grooved. A single helical gear was used in lieu of herring bone type. A Falk speed reducer, Unit 90Y3-A, is driven by a 25-hp 1800-rpm, 440-V ac type 'C' (high starting torque) drip-proof, Frame 324-U motor. The speed reducer shaft is equipped with a solenoid operated ac spring set shoe brake, operating on a 7-in. diam. brake wheel. The dolly car, shown in Fig. 3, was field constructed, using the trucks and frame of a railroad tank car. Truax-Traer did not alter the frame but added plates and anchors for hoist ropes and frames for 8.5 tons of concrete to be used as ballast on the car. The limit switch operating shoe was also installed and the car coupler latch mechanism overhauled. The hoist rope selected was 1% in. in diam., 6x37 improved plow steel extra flexible, right lay, regular lay, with independent wire rope core, and preformed. Wedge sockets were used to connect rope to the dolly car as shown in Fig. 4. The system employs two 30-in. and three 16-in. diam. sheaves. All are bronze bushed and equipped with grease fittings. Larger sheaves are used for directional change of hoist rope and the smaller ones as snub sheaves to correct fleet angle of rope as it approaches the hoist drum. The Trench lay cable, buried between the two tracks, is used for electrical distribution and controls between hoists and operator's cab. Foundations for the system required 187 cu yards of reinforced concrete using approximately 60 cu yd each at three locations. Four hoists are employed in the system, two for each track. A pair is interconnected electrically and when one operates, moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The process is repeated for the reverse direction. A limit switch, mounted in the track near each end of the system, is tripped by the dolly car as it approaches the hoist. Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because of its unique properties and low cost. Strictly defined, kaolin is the name given to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which kaolinite is the most common mineral (1). Through common usage the mineral, kaolinite, is called "kaolin" or "china clay". In 1972 over 4, 000, 000 tons of kaolin will be beneficiated and shipped by domestic producers. By far the largest user of kaolin is the paper industry which utilizes approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the total production. Kaolin is used in paper as a filler in the interstices of the sheet and as a coating to impart smoothness, gloss, brightness, and printability to the paper. The rubber industry is also a large user of kaolin where it is used as a filler because it adds strength, abrasion resistance, and rigidity to both natural and synthetic rubber goods. Kaolin is used as an extender in paints because it is chemically inert, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties, and is low in cost. In ceramics, kaolin is used in whitewares, tile, insulators, refractories, and in some face brick where a white color is desired. Kaolin is also used extensively in plastics as a filler in thermosetting and thermoplastic mixes to give smoother surfaces, a more attractive finish, good dimensional stability, and resistance to chemical attack. Many other process industries use kaolin as a filler, suspending medium, or for color improvement.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.

Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation- process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves.

U.S. scientists attempting to maintain continuous surveillance of scientific information are confronted with two acute problems: The steady, even spectacular; increase in the volume of such information and the fact that much of it is published in unfamiliar foreign languages, According to the National Science Foundation, almost one-third of the world's scientific literature is published in languages that are read by less than 5 percent of U.S. scientists. Most scientists in the United States must rely on abstract journals and translations to obtain information on developments in research and investigations conducted in the non-English-speaking countries. However, there are problems involved in procuring suitable abstracts and translations and in obtaining such information as cheaply and rapidly as possible.

Secunda Collieries forms part of Sasol Coal, the coal division of the Sasol Group of companies, and already produces 29 Mt of coal per annum from its four collieries: Twistdraai, Brandspruit, Bosjesspruit, and Middelbult. The successful establishment of this mining complex was achieved only through a unique team spirit in which the central services and the decentralized teams under the leadership of the mine management of each of the four mines played an important role. The Secunda mining complex has now reached the optimization phase, during which the mining cost, productivity, safety, and quality of work become as important as production. The setting of priorities and problem solving over the long, medium, and short term are essential for improving the performance of the four collieries. Management had to adapt to the fast-changing environment during the enormously fast build-up of production. The major challenges in the environment were posed by the frequent dolerite intrusions, the extremely hard cutting conditions caused by carbonated nodules and thin sandstone intrusions in the coal seam, and excessive roof and face pressure in some areas due to semi-massive sandstone formations in the rock strata.

IN discussing the classification of iron to-day, we are to leave out of consideration the general division into non-malleable or cast iron and malleable iron, as to the adequacy of which no question has been raised; and to confine ourselves to the subdivisions of malleable iron. This has been classified, according to the extent to which the properties imparted by carbon are present (viz., resilience, hardness, strength„ and, above all, the capacity for being hardened by sudden cooling from a high temperature), into (1) wrought iron which cannot be hardened, and (2) steel which can be hardened; and this classification I shall, for briefness, term the carbon classification. Until within a few years all authorities, both metallurgical and general,, have concurred in explicitly recognizing the carbon-given qualities, and preeminently the capacity for being hardened, as the essential qualities of steel ; this is laid down with clearness by every writer on the subject. For several years this old classification has not been sufficient to, meet all our needs, since the genius of Bessemer, Siemens, and, I may add, Holley, has produced wrought iron which has been perfectly melted, and thus freed from certain mechanical adhering impurities. This causes what we call homogeneousness for want of a better word, and gives rise to many important qualities which the old wrought iron had not;. qualities universally recognized, though not readily described. I shall, for briefness, style them the fusion qualities, and a classification based on them., a fusion classification. "Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to ""cover"" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral rarticles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead- activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide rarticles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.IntroductionSurface properties play a critical role in many aspects of mineral processing such as flotation, flocculation, etc. An understanding of interaction mechanisms of different reagents (inorganic cations and anions, collectors, regulators, etc.) with mineral surface in an aqueous solution is a very important pre-requisite in achieving the desired selective flotation. In the flotation of complex sulphide ores, the flotation collectors respond to the activation of minerals such as sphalerite, pyrite etc. by heavy metal ions of Cu, Pb or Ag, which is a strictly surface phenomenon."
