Western Australian tin deposits are similar to those of other Precam- brian terrains in that they are mainly associated with rare-metal pegmatites, in which cassiterite is found with minerals containing any or all of the elements Ta, Nb, Be, Li, Cs, Rb and the rare earths.. They differ from Phanerozoic deposits where cassiterite occurs in quartz veins, greisens, dis- seminations in granite or sulphide lodes, and is associated with minerals containing W, Mo, Bi, Sb, As, Ag, or Cu. The main tin production in Western Australia has come from the Pilbara Block where the more important tin- bearing pegmatites are related to a younger granite phase, and from Green- bushes where large albite pegmatites intrude ?Proterozoic metamorphic rocks. The more important tin deposits in the Pilbara Block, and those in the Halls Creek and Murchison Provinces, are related to granites which are richer in Si and K and poorer in Ca, Mg, Fe and Ti than 'average granite'. The tin granites tend to have higher than average contents of Sn, Rb and Li.

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. The properties, characteristics and phase structure of chamotte refractories produced with the usage of mullitecorund chamotte and caoline have been given. The comparison of new refractory C-45 obtained by us and refractory C-43 produced by traditional method has done. The physical-chemical properties of refractories is reviewed. The visual porosity, density and pore characteristics of given refractories was calculated. It is established that C-45 has the less gas permeability then C-45 that gives melting units more stability. The petrographical microstructures of refractories have been done. The main phase structures and their influence on refractories properties have been observed. It is established that refractories with mullitecorund chamotte adition has more advantages then refractories gained by traditional method and can be applied to melting units.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the technical feasibility of application of the electric monorail as a haulage system in hard-rock underground mining in Australia, in comparison to conventional truck haulage systems. The elements of the system being investigated include mine design and layout, installation, loading and unloading subsystems, tramming speeds, cost and productivity, automation, ground support, safety and environmental factors. Electric monorail systems are potentially more cost-effective due to a range of factors: only the one system may be needed for the transportation of workers, material and rock; and excavations for monorail haulage can be smaller and mined at much steeper gradients than for truck haulage. The smaller excavation size also reduces the need for costly ground support and û in another important measure for the health and safety of mine workers, and for energy savings û it reduces ventilation requirements. Electric monorail haulage technology is being applied in hard rock mines in South Africa and considerable benefits have been realised by the industry in that country. In Australia, mine designs for metal mines generally remain based on truck haulage and/or shaft hoisting systems. There is a tendency to apply these haulage systems to every orebody. For the industry to achieve sustained growth against a backdrop of volatile diesel prices and environmental concerns, new generation underground haulage systems are required. The monorail haulage system offers opportunities in improving materials handling efficiencies in underground mining operations. This paper examines the application of monorail haulage in metalliferous underground mining, presents comparative data with track and trackless haulage systems and develops concepts for system application in combination with conveyor belt haulage and narrow vein mining situations.

"Improving comminution efficiencies with better machine geometries and motions, improved nip angles, rock movement control, and voids regulation among rocks are some of the next steps to better machine performance. Recent gains (~30%) using high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRS) and vertical roller mills, in theory and practice, are based on Prof. Klaus Schönert’s academic studies (1979–1996) on rock breakage physics. More recently, University of British Columbia Prof. Bern Klein’s studies (2006–present) via the Ph.D. thesis of Z. Davaanyam (2015) further validate theory with practice from laboratory measurements used in this paper.They demonstrated ideal rock compression breakage, within HPGR and vertical roller mill machines using a piston-die apparatus. Similar rock size range is used. The piston-die confine rock breakage behavior. However, these studies do not extend to larger rocks (> 75 mm), and do not demonstrate the influence of rock voids among bifurcation of rocks during comminution. Further, machines fed with larger rock sizes, such as gyratory, jaw, and cone crushers, are not designed or evaluated for geometry nip angle efficiency.Herein we illustrate a performance gain of a new comminution machine, the conjugate anvil-hammer mill (CAHM), first presented at SAG 2011 (Nordell, 2012). The CAHM machine digests rock sizes 400% larger than HPGR, improves rock grip/nip geometry, better improves rock voids, improves surface wear life > 500%, and improves rock containment and slippage during compression. In all, the CAHM machine shows 22 potential improvements over the HPGR. Most importantly, CAHM shows a 50% kWh/ton improvement compared to the HPGR. Our studies use an advanced Discrete Element Method (DEM) computer program called ROCKY. ROCKY simulates moving boundaries, surface wear mechanics, and incorporates rock breakage physics based on the fundamentals of JKMRC T10 protocol [×] with tuned A × b breakage parameters.We calibrate rock breakage in our DEM code to mimicking both UBC laboratory piston-die and HPGR comminution measurements. We then model CAHM with these known ore and machine properties. Differences are illustrated using DEM techniques on each machine, including key points of when each: use geometry; initiate bifurcation breakage; provide a map of particle size distribution by location; illustrate the importance of controlling voids to minimize agglomeration after breakage; machine performance limits; and kWh/ton benefit."

"The Hog Creek mine, in lot 92 of the 17th district in Towns County, Georgia, was examined in 1890 by F. P. King, who reported the existence there of a 4-foot vein of corundum. The mine is about 2 miles west of Hiawassee, on the southern side of Ramey Mountain. Ed Burch, of Hog Creek, holds the surface rights, and the mineral rights appear to be vested in the heirs of William R. McConnell, who formerly owned and prospected the property.Examination by the Bureau of Mines showed the workings to be caved, but it was thought advisable to open the mine and uncover the reported vein. The Bureau's work consisted, of trenching and cleaning out the pits and shaft.William R. McConnell, the former owner, prospected the property in about 1890. At some tine during that operation, the prospect was visited by Francis P. Kings a geologist with the Georgia Geological Survey.3/King reported that a 4-foot vein of corundum was exposed g feet below the surface in the main cut and was opened for 20 feet along the strike. He also reported that the so-called ""Georgia rubies"" were taken from this mine.The main mine is about 2,000 feet- north of Hoc Creek on a timbered southern slope of Ramey Mountain. It lies at an altitude of about 2,100 feet, approximately 100 feet above the high-water level of the Catuga reservoir, which floods Hog Creek to a quarter of a mile above its confluence with the Hiawassee River. The nearest water is a small branch about 1,000 feet to the west.Chlorite schist is the principal host rock. It has been intruded by irregular masses of a very herd periodtite rock possibly troctolite. The schist near the surface is extremely weathered, presenting white and red laminations parallel to the schistosity. At a depth of 40 feet in the cross-cut it appears as a fine-grained green-chlorite schist. The schist strikes about N. 350 E. and dips 800 to the southeast.No corundum vein was found, and if any existed it must have been mined out after King's visit. In the pit, about 15 feet west of the shaft, approximately 150 pounds of zoisite and an occasiona1 small crystal of corundum were found imbedded in schist about 18 feet below the surface, near hard, dense troctolite."

ABSTRACT: This article presents a novel technology for sensing the size of rocks after blasting in hard rock mines. Blast engineers require rock size statistics to carefully adjust the blasting parameters. The rock fragmentation requirements vary depending on the ore type and crusher specifications. The most popular statistical parameters in the industry are the so-called P numbers (e.g., P80 and P100). A machine vision based system is introduced here for automatic image collection and fragmentation analysis of the material right inside the bucket or dipper of mining shovels. A heavy-duty camera provides the required imaging data to an embedded computer mounted inside the cab. A custom machine vision software continuously analyzes the captured bucket images and stores the suitable ones in local storage which are then fed to a Desktop software for automatic fragmentation analysis. This technology has been developed by Motion Metrics International and is commercially available as FragMetrics?.

The paper presents a computer simulation package developed for the size¬-reduction circuits of Indian hematitic iron ores. The package is developed by linking independent procedures describing different unit operations like crushing, screening, recycling, etc. Mathematical models are used to quantify the unit operations involved. The models are selected after thorough analytical studies of the samples and data collected from four operating plants. The package developed gives a fairly accurate result with respect to, size and chemical composition of the flow stream and products. The program written in PASCAL can be used to try the flowsheet with various raw ores, as well as different flowsheets with the same raw ore.

"A hoisting plant design should satisfy two basic requirements:1. to provide the necessary materials handling capacity, including ventilation where applicable, while meeting the requirements of good practice and, as a minimum, government regulation; and2. to optimize the economics of the project. Selection of hoisting equipment to meet the first objective is a complex but logical engineering process. The necessary calculations of payloads, accelerations, speeds, rope strength, hoist size, and power requirements are very readily carried out on computers or programmable calculators. A variety of hoist options can be quickly examined to assess the effects of changes in design parameters.Meeting the second requirement involves balancing the costs of various hoist arrangements and shaft designs, together with the time cost effects of differing shaft sinking rates and potential advances to be gained by concurrent level development. The proposed mine layout is significant here, as is the possibility of future shaft deepening and/or production increase. The availability of used equipment may be significant, both as regards first cost and delivery time. The factors are interactive, with their relative effects .varying from project to project. This paper sets out the primary factors to be considered."

"Important for thickening processes is the ability of slurries to form under certain conditions aggregation and sedimentation stable systems. Substantial part of difficult to sediment solid particles in such systems may be in colloidal state. The technique to study the sedimentation and aggregative stability of the slurry developed by the author with co-authors makes possible to define kinetics of changes in the aggregative stability of the system with solid phase varying concentration in it and produce data on sedimentation stability of the system in preliminary investigation of the thickening process. Research of aggregative and sedimentation stability of the slurry complement standard methods of laboratory studies to prevent errors in development of water-slime thickening balance and water circulation to design new and upgrade existing processing plants. Statistical analysis of process audits of more than one hundred upgraded and newly commissioned processing plants carried out in recent fifteen years showed that more than two-thirds of problems arising in commissioning the processing plants are associated with misdesign and errors in thickening and water circulation system. Among the main reasons of process design failures are: non-conformity of actual characteristics of the raw material to design characteristics, low quality of preliminary studies at the stage of sedimentation process simulation, design failures, wrongly selected equipment for the thickening and water circulations systems. As of today a number of problems associated with laboratory studies of sedimentation process, first of all, with interpretation of precipitation curves produced at the stage of laboratory refinement of the thickening process have been pinpointed. "The Stoddard mine, Cheshire County, N. H., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1944 as a source of the strategic fluorite. It was reported that the vein persisted in the bottom of old workings and the geology of the immediate area indicated the possibility of finding additional lenses.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts pre¬liminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is expressed for the cooperation and assistance given by Robert F. Sherwood of the United Feldspar & Minerals Corp.; by McHenry Mosier, chief, College Park Division, Mining Branch, who aided in re¬vising this report; and by J. B. A dirt road in fair condition suitable for truck leads to the nine.Dwight H. Smith, Putney, Vt., is the owner and has leased the property to the United Feldspar & Minerals Corp., 10 East 40th Street, New York 16, N. Y.Property titles were not investigated.The fluorite deposits of Cheshire Count', H. H., have been known for many years, being reported by Jackson, (Geology and Mineralogy of New Hampshire, by Charles T, Jackson, 1844) and by Hitchcock, in1878 (Geology of Now Hampshire, vol. 3, 1878, by Charles H. Hitchcock). A large pit on the largest or east vein was mined by Lovat Frazer from about 1908 to 1917, This operation is reported to have produced approximately 3,500 tons of fluorspar. In 1917, the American Steel & Wire Co, took over the mine end is said to have produced 3,500 tons of fluorspar before relinquishing the lease in 1923.From 1935 to 1937 the New Hampshire Fluorspar Cc. operated the Stoddard mine, working chiefly on the most westerly of the three known veins on the property, as well as doing some preliminary work on the small central vein. In 1938, the United Feldspar 6 Minerals Corp. leased the mine, and less than 100 tons of fluorspar was produced from exploration and development work, No mining has been done since that time."

The Upper Robe (Robe Gorge) deposits occur in Kumina Creek and the Robe River, some 20-40 km upstream from mining operations at Pannawonica. The Gorge Deposits were rec- ognised, mapped and sampled in 1962-3 and re- examined in detail in 1971. Approximately 180 mineralized occurrences were mapped in 1971 on 1:4800 scale and 50 of these were remapped in detail at 1:1200 scale. Eighty cross sections were measured and sampled and 300 geological maps prepared. In addition 88 holes totalling 7388 feet were drilled in three occurrences considered to have the greatest potential. The Gorge Deposits occur in the Robe Pisolite unit which forms thin remnant crusts, bay fillings and occasional cut-off meanders along the edge of the present streams. Less than 50 of the deposits have tonnage potential of one million or more. Consequently exploit- ation of the Gorge reserves must be considered as a very uncertain, long range possibility because the deposits are small and scattered throughout the gorges in the area, thereby necessitating costly railroad spur lines to gain mining access. "Mining in the Carletonville area of the Witwatersrand Basin predates 1934. Owing to the depletion of higher grade ore, the current activities focus increasingly on the extraction of lower grade secondary reefs as well as remnant extraction. Of particular interest is multi-reef remnant extraction. Numerical modelling was conducted to investigate some rock engineering aspects of remnants being understoped on a secondary reef horizon. An analysis of the stress evolution in the middling between two reef horizons indicated that a zone of high major and low minor principal stress develops between the two reefs. This indicates a high risk of violent shear failure. Some pillars were nevertheless successfully understoped in the past and a study was conducted to better understand this phenomenon. An ’extended’ energy release rate concept introduced by Napier and Malan (2014) proved to be useful for investigating this problem. It was found that bedding planes and lithology appears to play a role in the stable dissipation of energy in multi-reef remnant geometries. The study indicated that the stope convergence and the various energy components are affected by the presence, position, and properties of a bedding plane. The energy solutions are complex and sometimes counterintuitive. Care should be exercised when modelling specific cases. The modelling was nevertheless valuable as it indicated that energy dissipated on weak layers may reduce the risk of violent failure in a multi-reef mining scenario. Additional work is required to investigate if crushing on the reef plane plays a prominent role when mining these remnants. IntroductionTo extend the lives of the Witwatersrand gold mines, work is being conducted to include a larger number of remnants and pillars in the reserve base of the mines. According to Jager and Ryder (1999), a remnant is an unmined block of ground surrounded by extensive mining. Remnants are typically left because of adverse or difficult mining conditions caused by geological structures, poor ground conditions, low grade, or rockburst damage (Durrheim, 1997). In contrast, pillars are typically the result of rock engineering designs to control energy release rates (ERR) and seismicity. During the early 1900s, remnants formed by the practice of scattered mining layouts had a significant effect on seismicity. Numerous task teams were appointed during this period. As the industry expanded, the severity of rockbursting increased and the research was formalized after the 1960s. Various recommendations were made and many of these are still used as best practice today (e.g. Jager and Ryder, 1999)."

One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

"This presentation will provide a demonstration of the methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant utilizing a review of the challenges faced and solutions delivered for the Elk Creek Superalloy Materials Project (Niobium/Scandium). The development of the design required the review of complex hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding capital expenditure (CAPEX) limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group (including Nordmin Engineering Ltd.) (Nordmin) was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. INTRODUCTION The Elk Creek Project, owned by NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NioCorp) presently, will become Nebraska’s first underground metals mine, built to access the Elk Creek Niobium/Scandium deposit. The development of the design for this facility required the review of challenging hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding CAPEX limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. This paper will review the challenges faced, and solutions arrived at in a demonstration of a methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant. THE CHALLENGES Nordmin became involved in the project in 2015, invited by the Feasibility Study Consultant to provide input on estimating and layouts for the new operation. Many of the fundamental decisions regarding mining methodology, water handling and production strategy had been made, and the scope of Nordmin’s involvement was very limited in this first engagement. Following submission of that study in late 2017/early 2018, Nordmin had opportunity to discuss the overall effort, and its many assumptions and challenges, with NioCorp’s project team. The dialogue quickly identified several significant opportunities to improve the project construction schedule and costs along with the mine production profile and operational approach while reducing project risk."

This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.

Peabody Coal Company is the nation's largest producer of coal and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1978 Peabody divisionalized its operations to establish more responsive and effective mine management. Peabody Coal Company's Arizona Division operates two large surface mines, the Black Mesa and Kayenta Mines. Both are located in northeastern Arizona, approximately 30 miles from Kayenta, Arizona, on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations. The Black Mesa Mine produces 4 to 5 million tons of coal per year and the Kayenta Mine produces 7 to 8 million tons per year. Coal from the Black Mesa Mine is transported 274 miles by coal slurry pipeline to the Mohave Generating Plant located on the Nevada/Arizona border at Bullhead City, Arizona. This plant is jointly owned by Southern California Edison, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Nevada Power Company and Salt River Project Agriculture Improvement and Power District.
