"In May 1936, Pamour started producing gold by cyanidation of flotation concentrates, and in 1939 was milling about 1, 600 tons per day.Refining records dating from 1939 show two oil-fired furnaces in use, (Rockwell type 46 11 x 29 11 inside oval shell).Refining time averaged 7. 83 hours during the year 1939, indicating a complete refining shift of about 9. 33 hours. That year appears to be characteristic of the period with regard to time required and results obtained.For that year total fineness (gold + silver) of the bars averaged 940 (approx.), but it frequently dropped below this figure, sometimes far below.Furnace lining life varied widely from three to seven or more months. Sillimanite was the standard lining but Mullfrax 41 was frequently used.For many years refining practice remained practically unchanged, and in 1960 procedure still consisted essentially of mixing a flux(% Composition Borax 41, Silica 11, Soda-Ash 11, Nitre 15, Mn02 22) with cyanidation precipitate in the ratio of l. 2 to l and heating to a medium heat (yellowishred, 2000° F) with a low flame for a long time. Time required was about 10. 5 hours per refining. Results were still much as detailed above.At this time it was decided to revise refining procedure, in an effort to shorten refining time and obtain consistently good bullion fineness."

A few copper-zinc-hasp alloys mppt die-casting requirements reasonably well, although improvements are desired. Aluminum bronzes, high-tin bronzes and some copper-nickel-zinc alloys can be die-cast, according to Herb,' but seldom are because of such factors as higher melting ranges and greater cost than certain of the brasses. Fox2 has summarized the copper-base die-casting alloys that were in commercial use in 1937 and has given the effects of different alloying constituents. Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

From 1895 to 1932, inclusive, 1,0163/ men were killed in and about New Mexico coal mines. Of these, 473 (approximately 47 percent) were killed in the 17 explosions listed in this paper. The second largest explosion of record in the United States, in so far as fatalities are concerned, occurred in New Mexico. The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the State inspector of coal mines of New Mexico. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. A few minor disasters are included, however.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.

Reactive ball milling has been proposed as a new route for producing carbides from oxides through carbothcrmic reduction. It is claimed that through milling oxide and graphite powders to the nanoscale, amorphous materials with very high reactivity are formed, that allows for easy transformation of the starting material to another in a subsequent thermal process. Thermodynamic analysis of this proposed process suggests that unless particle sizes are reduced to below 10nm, then reduction in size alone cannot explain a change in the stability of oxides. Even with nanometer scale powders, the products formed need to have a lower total surface energy than the reactants before a chemical change will occur. A model developed by Bhattacharya and Arzt for predicting localized temperature changes based on milling conditions suggest that temperarure rises less than 400 K will be achieved in laboratory conditions. The present calculations suggest that nanometer scale powders formed through high speed ball milling (>10 mls) may have undergone a process analogous to melting and quenching. Further work is required to fully distinguish these features.

A new technique for the removal of tramp-elements from steel scrap has been required from the viewpoint of saving energy and protection of environment. In order to obtain fundamental information on the removal of copper, tin and zinc from molten iron, the extraction method by using of phase separation in the liquid Fe-Pb-C system was investigated at 1453K. A mixture of iron, lead and carbon melted in a carbon crucible separates into two phases of lead and iron containing carbon. The compositions on the miscibility gap in the Fe-Pb-C system are 95.4%Fe-4.5%C-0.1 %Pb and 99.9%Pb-0.I%Fe. The distribution ratios of copper, tin and zinc between the lead and the iron phases, Lx [mass%X in molten Pb]/(mass%X in molten Fe), are 2.2, 2.2 and 1.4, respectively. Seventy percent of copper and tin from iron scrap can be eliminated with comparable lead addition. Gold, silver and palladium are enriched in the lead rich phase, on the contrary platinum and rhodium are more distributed to the iron rich phase than to the lead phase.

"INTRODUCTION The operators of the Lake Superior district iron-ore mines have made tremendous progress in the past 25 years in the transportation of broken ore from the working places to the surface. This progress has paid divi¬dends in increased production and in lower accident-frequency rates. The trend has been toward more efficient use of mechanical and electrical power and abolishment of many of the backbraking tasks formerly required of min¬ers and trammers.ScopeTransportation of iron ore as described in this paper covers (1) movement from the working place to ore raises by scrapers, shaker,conveyors, and belt conveyors, and, loading underground cars from chutes or-by scraping from loading drifts; (2) underground haulage, which includes underground cars trains, locomotives, and tracks; (3) shaft station's and hoisting shafts, which. Includes dumping cars, storage-pockets; auxiliary storage trenches, and shafts; (4) hoisting, which consists of skips, cages and hoists; and (5) head frames, loading into railroad cars, and stock-pile haulage.The 19 underground iron-ore mines discussed in this paper, situated in the Menominee, Marquette, Gogebic, Guyana, Mesabi, and Vermilion iron ranges of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota., shipped about 9,000,000 tons of iron ore in 1945, which constituted 56 percent of the underground iron ore taken from the Lake Superior district."

Rotary oscillation of the mold has been used to produce mechanical stirring of the melt during unidirectional solidification. Al-Cu alloys (1 to 4 wt pct Cu) were solidified to study the influence of alloy composition, temperature at which intensive cooling was initiated, and intensity of stirring on the temperature distribution in the sample, the resulting structure, and the copper microsegregation at the columnar to equiaxed transition. The Proposed explanation for the equiaxed solidification in stirred castings consists of the melting off of dendrite fragments, their partial remelting in hotter liquid, and the subsequent growth of the surviving part when the temperature of the melt is lowered. This may result in the formation of a crystal network, which can stop the growth of the columnar crystals and produce the equiaxed zone. It has long been known and many times affirmed that ultrasonic vibrations or relative motion of liquid and solid can significantly reduce the length of the columnar zone and refine the grains in the equiaxed zone in ingots and castings. Because of the technological importance of these phenomena many investigations have been conducted in which ultrasonic energy or mechanical vibration,1-6 electromagnetic stirring,7"10'17 magnetic stirring,"'12 or mechanical stirring13'14 were used to produce the relative liquid-solid motion. More recently, the question of the importance of natural (or thermal) convection has been raised.15-l7 Several possible mechanisms have been suggested.l,8,18-20 They can be divided into two main groups. The first group includes such nucleation hypotheses as nucleation frequency enhancement due to cavitation at the mold wall or other surfaces; cavita-tion in the body of the liquid resulting from the pressure wave, or an agglomeration mechanism, which involves the formation of nuclei by the accretion of subcritical nuclei. The second group considers the grain-refining action to be due to crystal multiplication phenomena such as the removal of the dendrite fragments by viscous forces or by a high-pressure cycle following cavitation or by a melting-off process. Sbme recent investigations give good experimental support to the melting-off proposa1.21-23 The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of mechanical stirring during the unidirectional solidification on the structure of alloy samples and on the solidification variables. The motion of the liquid was produced by rotary oscillation of the mold around its vertical axis.

[ ] Professor Hibbard's paper presents a very interesting theory concerning the influence of texture on the tendency of brass tube to stress-corrosion crack. I should like to present the result of some work done in 1941 which may throw further light on the subject. In the first place, in regard to his review of the influences of grain boundaries, we not only confirmed the findings which he quoted, but also were unable to crack single crystals of beta brass in the standard mercurous nitrate test in 50 hr under loads up to 18,500 psi. Samples containing two or more crystals of beta brass always cracked at grain boundaries and generally followed the same pattern as for alpha brass, although cracking occurred sooner than in alpha brass under the same conditions. Such a specimen is shown in Fig 4. Second, at the possible risk of repetition, we should like to call attention to the reported role of grain size as influencing the tendency to stress-corrosion crack. This phenomenon, originally mentioned by Dr. Allan Morris in the Transactions, AIME, 1931, is illustrated in Fig 5, showing the effect of variations in grain size on the tendency of drawn brass wires to crack under load in the mercurous nitrate solution. Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. A new mining area at the Vaal Reefs gold mine is to have a shaft. system which will extend to a depth of 4 200 m and will require 130 MW of cooling. A novel feature of the proposed cooling system is a large underground air cooling installation in which an ice slurry is sprayed into the ventilation air. The design of the ice slurry bulk air cooler, in the form of counter.flow cooling towers, is discussed. Comparative thermal tests with cold water and ice slurries (with ice mass fractions up to 22 per cent), were carried out in a 5 m high test tower. The presence of the ice in the water spray increases the resistance to heat flow and reduces the overall thermal characteristics of the air cooler by 8 per cent. Notwithstanding this, the use of ice slurries is indeed beneficial in terms of overall costs. It is concluded that a 25 MW air cooler should use 410 kg/s of ice slurry with a 10 per cent ice mass fraction to cool 550 kg/s of air which is 75 per cent of the total air flow rate.

The boundary element method is one of a number of tools that have found wide application in geomechanics for mine design and stress analysis. Two examples are presented in this paper, illustrating the use of the boundary element method to find potential problem regions in large-scale excavations. These examples are from a Papua New Guinea open cut mine and an Australian sub-level caving operation. Because of the scale of the mines and the complexity of the excavations, the boundary element method is the only practical numerical modelling technique to account for the major influences. Although the boundary element method uses only linear elastic models of the rock mass, the paper illustrates techniques for dealing with non-homogenous and anisotropic rock masses, as well as clasto-plastic effects associated with an excavation.

When the mining and milling of 1100 Copper Orebody commenced, difficulties were experienced in producing a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 Orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in an inherently flotable fine pyrite and silica fraction. The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to'the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Introduction The Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) is a national program dedicated to storage of large quantities of crude oil in leached salt caverns in the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast area. The program has required storage in existing caverns at each site and includes plans to leach new ones. The structural stability of each cavern depends on the behavior of the surrounding salt. In the past cavern stability has been predicted based on experience with other caverns in the vicinity. With the development of good non-linear finite element structural computer programs, it is possible to predict stability before the cavern is created. An important step in verifying the applicability of these predictive methods is comparison of analytical and field data. The analytical data come from finite element analyses of a specific cavern where the laboratory determined material properties and an approximation to the cavern geometry are used as input. These comparisons have been made for caverns in the Bayou Choctaw Dome (Louisiana) and Eminence Dome (Mississippi) with reasonably good correlation being obtained between measured and predicted volumetric response of the caverns. This paper discusses 1) the acquisition of material properties, 2) the finite element program SANCHO, and 3) the comparison of analytical and field data for each of the caverns.

The so-called COMAT process provides a method for leaching low grade sulphide mattes in an acidic ferric sulphate medium in such a way that non ferrous base metals such as Ni,Cu and Co are substantially all dissolved; the concentration of residual acid and dissolved iron remaining in the leaching solution is low, and a large portion of the sulphide sulphur is converted to elemental sulphur. Thus the quantity of neutralising agents required to remove residual acid and dissolved iron from the leach solution prior to subsequent recovery of the dissolved base metals is greatly reduced. The leach residue and iron precip- itate report in a readily filterable form. In this paper results obtained on a pilot plant scale are presented for the leaching of a typical low grade matte in the manner describ- ed above; for the solvent extraction and elec- trowinning of copper, and for the removal of residual acid, copper and iron from the copper solvent extraction raffinate. Processes tested on a laboratory scale for the further recovery of cobalt and nickel by solvent extraction and electrowinning, and for the recovery of sulphuric acid and ammonium hydr- oxide from the dissolved ammonium sulphate salt contained in the final plant effluent, are also briefly described.

Historically, the control of flotation operations has been viewed by many as an art. Only recently has process measurement and control come to be viewed not as an ?art? but as a very complex and productive science. In recent years, process control applications to flotation plants have been established and already some gains have been reported for several industrial operations using individual stabilizing control loops including level, pulp flow, pulp density, reagent addition rate and pH (Paakinen, 1979; Hales, 1985). The use of process control computers combined with on-line x-ray florescence (XRF) in industrial flotation circuits has made the application of more sophisticated control techniques feasible in the mineral recovery process. In spite of the availability of reliable instrumentation in modern flotation plants, satisfactory control strategies are difficult to develop and implement. Extremely important factors such as changes in ore type, liberation characteristics, flotability, degree of oxidation on particle surfaces, and specific gravity constitute unmeasured disturbances to the process. Most current control systems cannot adapt specifically to such disturbances.
