The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

Introduction Oil shale deposits have been exploited in various countries throughout the world, but generally with government aid. The oil-shale industry of Scotland perhaps is the oldest and best-known; the largest was conducted in Manchuria by the Japanese during World war 11 as a source of liquid fuels for military uses. In general, foreign oil-shale deposits that have been exploited are much lower grade than those in the western United States. Considerable interest began to be shown in western oil shales in 1916; the peak of activities was in 1923. The catlin operation, near Elko, Nevada, perhaps was the nearest approach in this country to an oil-shale enterprise on a commercial scale. Over 100 companies were formed, ostensibly for exploiting the oil shale; a large number of them, however, proved to be stock promotions only, which gave the embryo industry a black eye. The Bureau of Mines operated an experi-mental oil-shale retort plant near Rifle, Colorado, from September 1926 to June 1927 and again from April 1928 to July 1929, after which the plant was dismantled. By this time the East Texas oil fields had come ill and the country lost interest in substitute liquid fuels. During World War II the Nation again became concerned about the magnitude of its petroleum reserves. Congress (April 1944) directed the Bureau of Mines to build and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, and agricultural and other products; a five-year Program was authorized. *' a part of this program the Bureau of Mines has built, at Anvil Points near Rifle, Colorado, a retort plant and develOped an experimental mine to supply the plant with oil shale. An important part of the mining work at Rifle is to devise methods and select practices for mining the oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The product to be mined has a relatively low value, a fact that must be kept in in mind. The combined aim of those in charge of the mining and those in charge of retorting is to demonstrate that the shale oil can be produced at a cost per barrel corresponding to the current quotation for crude petroleum —or at least very close to it. Plans call for an uninterrupted flow of broken oil shale from the lace in the mine, through crushers, through the retorts and thence to the disposal dump. The South Australian mining regulatory framework has adopted a performance based approach to the management of risk. This approach has been in place in South Australia for more than 10 years and is increasingly being implemented in mining jurisdictions in Australia and around the world. Performance based regulation focuses on setting appropriate environmental outcomes to be achieved based on an assessment of the potential impacts associated with the development, operation and closure of mining projects. Measurable compliance criteria, including completion criteria, are set to demonstrate achievement of the outcomes. It is the responsibility of the proponent to propose designs and strategies that will achieve the regulated environmental outcomes and to demonstrate the implementation of their designs and strategies will achieve the outcomes into the future. Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are significant elements of many major mines and each is unique with site specific factors such a materials to be stored, design, size, location, climate, sensitive receptors, operating history of the facility (i.e. changes to design), site culture and company capability amongst a range of other factors. Consequently a fit-for purpose approach is a key principle of best practice regulation of tailings management as it takes the site specific factors into account in setting appropriate outcomes for mitigating the identified impacts associated with a proposed development. Achievement of those outcomes through fit-for purpose, well designed management strategies would ensure safe, stable and economic storage of tailings in a manner that complies with all legislative requirements and presents negligible public health and safety risks. Tailings storage must also have acceptably low social and environmental impacts, both on and off site, during operation and indefinitely post closure. Achievement of environmental outcomes during operations and at mine completion can then be demonstrated to the regulator and community through public reporting of compliance with measurement criteria which establish the appropriate level of impact for each individual operation. A number of new mining proposals including tailings storage facilities (TSF) have recently been assessed and approved in South Australia. The location, size, design, sensitive receptors, public interest and therefore risk profiles of these TSF’s have varied substantially between these new mining proposals. These considerations were reflected in the assessment of the TSFs and the resulting mining lease conditions of approval including the environmental outcomes to be achieved over the life of the facilities. The hydrogenation of phenyl ether, benzyl ether, and phenyl sulfide in the presence of iron catalysts was studied by the Bureau of Mines to gain a better understanding of the role of iron catalysts in the hydrogenation of coal. The carbon-oxygen and carbon-sulfur bonds in these compounds may be similar to some of the carbon-oxygen and carbon-sulfur bonds in coal which react during the early stages of liquefaction by hydrogenation. Experiments were made in batch autoclaves for 4 hours; hydrogen was at a pressure of about 540 atmospheres. In the hydrogenation of phenyl ether at 400° C, metallic iron catalyzed both hydrogenolysis (splitting-hydrogenation) and nuclear hydrogenation (addition of hydrogen to aromatic rings) reactions, Products were principally benzene and cyclohexane. The activity of metallic iron was decreased by adding carbon monoxide or a reactive sulfur-containing organic compound. Ferrous sulfide catalyzed the conversion of phenyl ether to benzene, phenol, and small amounts of cyclohexane. Hydrogenolysis of benzyl ether was catalyzed by metallic iron and to a lesser extent, by ferrous sulfide at 250° C. No nuclear hydrogenation was observed with either catalyst. Conversion of phenyl sulfide to benzene was nearly quantitative in experiments made at 250° C with equimolar quantities of phenyl sulfide and metallic iron or iron as ferric oxide. Conversions of metallic iron and ferric oxide to ferrous sulfide were nearly stoichiometric. No reaction of phenyl sulfide occurred in the presence of ferric oxide and water, and very little occurred in the presence of metallic iron and water. Ferrous sulfide also catalyzed the hydrogenolysis of phenyl sulfide to benzene, but conversion was lower than in experiments with metallic iron or ferric oxide. The activity of ferrous sulfide was increased by adding water and decreased by adding hydrogen sulfide. The results of this study suggest that ferrous sulfide is an active form of iron when iron is used as a catalyst for the hydrogenation of coal.

Due to the variability of subsidence characteristics across the U.S. coalfields, it was concluded that it would be practically impossible to develop a universal predictive model for mining-induced subsidence based on theoretical assumptions. Therefore, an effort was made to find a procedure to develop an empirical subsidence predictive model based on a sufficient Mount of field data from one mining area (in this case the Northern Appalachian Coal Region). It was also thought that this procedure, if successful, could be used as the template for developing predictive capabilities for other coalfields with different subsidence characteristics given a reasonable amount of field data. It has been found, in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region, that the variability of subsidence characteristics can be expressed by a polynomial equation developed through regression analysis of the variable subsidence coefficient and derived directly from the field data. In this study, field data were obtained from 11 Bureau longwall panel studies (16 half profiles) for static subsidence and 14 panels for dynamic subsidence. The effects of lithology, expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient, have been separated for each test site by introducing a correlation between hythetically homogeneous overburden and existing ithological conditions. For each longwall panel, the characteristic of the variable subsidence coefficient was defined along individual static profiles. The definition of mean values with acceptable deviations is the substance of the predictive method. The same procedure was used to develop a predictive model for dynamic subsidence, since it war discovered that the rate of longwall face advance is not a necessary functional parameter. This paper presents the theory, development, and application of the static and dynamic subsidence prediction models.

Dominion Mining Ltd. and the JKMRC have conducted a detailed investigation of the performance of two of Dominion Mining's gold treatment plants (Haveluck and Paddy's Flat). In terms of design each plant is considerably different. The Paddy's Flat plant uses a single stage SAG mill with recycle crusher, followed by single stage ball milling. The Haveluck plant uses the more traditional approach of multi-stage crushing and ball milling. The performance of these two plant designs in terms of energy efficiency and cost of comminution equipment, developed at the JKMRC, to accurately predict both power draw and size reduction characteristics at these plants is evaluated.

A mathematical tnodel of forward combustion in an oil reservoir is treated in this paper. The model describes a radial system having a vertical section of essentially infinite thickness, all of which is permeable to gas flow. Combustion, however, is presumed initiated over a limited thickness of the total vertical section. In the interval supporting cotnbustion, the mechanisms of radial conduction, convection and heat generation are taken into account. Above and below the burning interval, heat transport in the radial direction is by cottduction and convection. Vertical heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by conduction alone. A general solution is presented for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the combustion front. The results show that no feedback of heat occurs into the ignited interval when convection and conduction are acting in the bounding media. Peak temperatures are also 5 to 10 per cent higher than in the case where heat transport in the bounding media is by conduction alone. We arbitrarily define vertical coverage to be that fraction of the total ignited interval which is at 600F above atnbient, or greater, at any given time. The radial distance at which the vertical coverage becomes zero is the propagation range of the combustion front. It was found that an increase in vertical coverage results when the oxygen concentration, fuel concentration or gas-injection rate is increased. Moreover, the combustion front can be propagated 10 to 15 per cent further than in the case where only conduction is acting above and below the ignited interval. INTRODUCTION In the theoretical treatment of forward combustion in a radial system, one of the problems encountered is the determination of the transient temperature distributions caused by an expanding cylindrical heat source. Bailey and Larkin' and Ramey' simultaneously presented analytical solutions to the problem assuming heat transport by conduction alone. In a subsequent publication, Bailey and Larkin3 included the effects of both conduction and convection while treating linear and radial models. In this latter work, however, vertical heat losses were largely neglected. Selig and Couch' dealt with a radial model in which both conduction and convection were acting. Only a limiting case involving vertical heat losses was considered, however. Namely, temperatures on the boundary of the bed of interest were set equal to zero. Solutions thus obtained were representative of a system having a maximum vertical heat flux. Chu5 recently treated a more general case in which a permeable bed was considered bounded by impermeable media. Conduction and convection took place within the bed, and only conduction outside of the bed. The effects of vertical heat losses were included in his study. Solutions were obtained by numerical techniques. This paper is an extension of the theoretical work of other authors pertaining to forward combustion in a radial system. In particular, a mathematical model of the process is treated in which heat generation occurs over a small vertical interval of a larger permeable section. In the interval supporting heat generation, and above and below this interval, the mechanisms of radial conduction and convection are also presumed acting. Heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by vertical conduction. An analytical solution for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the burning front is presented. The effects of certain process variables are indicated and comparisons with Chu's results are made. THEORY To render the mechanism of forward combustion tractable to mathematical treatment, we idealize the problem to the extent of assuming continuous reservoir media possessing homogeneous and isotropic properties. The following additional assumptions are implicit in this analysis. 1. The thermal parameters, i.e., heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities are invariant with temperature and pressure. Moreover, the bounding media possess the same thermal properties as the bed of interest. 2. The temperatures of the porous media and its contained fluids at any point and at any time are equal. 3. The reaction rate between the oxidant gas and the fuel is infinite. This assumption implies that the incoming oxygen concentration instantaneously goes to zero within an infinitesimal distance, i.e., the width of the combustion zone is negligible. 4. The rate of gas injection is constant and corresponds to the average rate throughout the lifetime of the project. 5. The fuel concentration is constant throughout the volume of rock swept out by the burning zone. 6. There is complete burnoff of fuel. These attributes and its location in the centre of a region hungry for resources contributes to the projectÆs excellent economics.

THE proper classification of mining methods has received the earnest study of many mining engineers and has resulted in much technical con-troversy, depending no doubt upon the point from which classification is viewed or the use to which it is put. So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of under-ground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute TRANSACTIONS, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. An in-seam tester, which is a hydraulically activated single-pick instrument to measure and record pick cutting forces, was designed and fabricated to establish criteria necessary for the design and development of a water-jet-assisted rotary drum cutting system using moderate-pressure jets (3,000 to 10,000 psi). Data are presented for cutting trials in a simulated coal block and underground in the Pittsburgh coal seam for water-jet assist and dry cutting. Data analysis indicates that water-jet assist significantly reduces pick forces.

The Florida Peninsula has existed as a part of a much broader plateau, since at least the Early Cretaceous. This plateau, the Floridan Plateau, now consists of the present peninsula and a broad submerged shelf of equivalent size extending the length of the state and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida Peninsula was separated from the mainland United States by a negative area called the Suwannee Straits. To the south of this feature existed an environment similar to today?s Bahamo Banks where very pure calcium and magnesium carbonates with associated evaporites were deposited. Thus the Eocene and Oligocene contain little or no quartz sand or clay minerals except in the Panhandle west of the Suwannee Straits where some clastics were contributed by rivers from the north.

Although methods for determining shaft lining thickness are well documented, little attention has been given to the design of station breakouts and other related shaft ground support structures. This paper discusses design of selected shaft structures for the Cathedral Bluffs project, a planned 54-kt/d (60,000-stpd) oil shale mine in western Colorado. Design philosophy and construction sequences used in the three completed 520-m (1700 ft) deep, 4.6-m (15 ft) to 10.4-m (34-ft) diameter shafts are described.

Blast vibration induced by mining activities, such as stope production blasts, could lead to the initiation of seismic events that inflict damage to mine openings. In this paper, the effect of stope production blasts on nearby fault is examined. First, validation of blast vibration attenuation is performed with a numerical model representing a single blast hole through comparison with that calculated from charge-weight scaling law derived from in-situ data. Subsequently, a mine-wide scale model with a fault parallel to a steeply dipping, tabular ore deposit that is mined out with sublevel stoping method is generated, and the stopes are extracted and backfilled with static analysis to simulate burst-prone conditions on the fault. Based on the stress states, dynamic analysis is performed, in which blast vibration is applied to grid points on a stope wall on the hanging wall side. This assumes 9 blast holes located close to the wall, and blast-induced particle velocities that consider the positional relationships between the assumed blast holes and the stope wall are applied. During the dynamic analysis, blast sequence is considered, and stress states and shear displacement on the faults are examined. It is found from results that, after a rise in normal stress on the fault due to compressive waves induced by the blasts, the normal stress decreases because of the reflection of the compressive waves on the fault. The reduction in the normal stress due to the reflected waves is found to be large enough to cause the fault to slip. The results also show that the level of normal stress eventually keeps decreasing with time as the blast sequence proceeds and that an increase in shear displacement on the fault is accompanied by a decrease in normal stress. This study clarifies the mechanism by which blast vibration causes the fault to slip. In addition, the simulation technique to apply blast vibration that takes into account blast sequence and the locations of blast holes to a stope wall is developed.

Katowice Coal Holding (KHW) is one of the largest coal companies in Europe. The company owns five coal mines with a daily output of around 60 000 tons of coal. In the Katowice city area, very good quality steam coal is extracted. The depth of mining varies between 400 and 1100 m and some of the mines rank amongst those most afflicted by methane in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the methane hazard having a significant impact on production and safety. ?Myslowice-Wesola? mine, being a part of the Katowice Coal Holding is characterized by high methane and rockburst hazards. The mine is equipped with a modern surface drainage pumping station. At the mentioned mine, longwall 514 was selected for analysis of its methane emission. The longwall was extracting the thick seam 501 (over 4 m), at a depth of over 900 m, which was subject to high stress and high gas concentration conditions. At a distance of about 50 m above, seam 501 is covered by thin seam 416. The strata between these two seams are sandstone and mudstone layers. In the floor of seam 501, with a thin shale interlayer, is located seam 510, which is the thickest (over 10m) and richest coal seam in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In longwall 514 and it?s vicinity, methane was the dominant risk. For this longwall three methods of classical gas drainage were carried out. At first, drainage was undertaken using long boreholes from a cross-cut at level 665 m, located far from the production panel. Later, it was performed using typical boreholes drilled from the ventilation gallery (tail gate road). Finally, it was undertaken using a degassing drift executed in the upper coal seam 416. All of these headings, ie. cross-cut level 665 m, the ventilation road and conveyor road in seam 501 and the degassing drift in seam 416, were equipped with media for drilling and proper drainage pipelines. Due to the high rockburst hazard and some problems with caving, several kinds of de-stressing and torpedo blasts were carried out in both coal seams and roof rocks. The subsequent analysis and experiments allowed the establishment of some general rules for carrying out degassing operations effectively. The effectiveness of a degassing drift was demonstrated. In some instances, the system allowed more than 70% of the total methane released to be captured and fed into pipelines. The aforementioned blasts had a marginal impact on methane emissions and the efficiency of degassing methods. Cyclic drilling and regular switching of boreholes in phase with the mining progress and working face advance were shown to be essential.

The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te' forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.' Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l'' It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~'~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273', 298", and 723°K have been measured5-' and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. When a fire breaks out in a mine access road, the hot smoke, due to heat transfer with the surrounding strata, progressively cools as it moves forward. Depending upon the resulting temperature distribution, the density of the fluid changes. This change will bring about: Firstly, a variation in the resistance of the roads, a static factor which will affect ventilation flow rates; Secondly, the appearance of extensive aerodynamic driving loads in the vertical and angled roads, a dynamic factor which can have an extensive impact on ventilation. Because of the appearance of combustion and distillation products, the vaporization of water, which wets the timbering and strata, and the expansion of gases, fluid rates can at times be increased tenfold in the area of the fire. These disturbances may cause explosions and ventilation inversions, which fill other working areas with smoke toxic to workers, and which can come up upon rescue teams from behind. Due to the progressive heating of the surrounding rocks, which will slow down heat transfer, these dangerous conditions change over time. At the Lorraine Basin Coal Mines, programs have been set up and employed for the computer simulation of these phenomena over time. They serve to anticipate or to understand such phenomena, the input data being the characteristic parameters of the mine ventilation network, the operating curve of the main fans, and measurements or estimates of some temperatures. Two programs, employed together, have been developed for these studies: One program, called RESO, calculates the distribution of flow rates and pressures throughout the entire network; The other, called FEUMIN, determines smoke temperatures over their entire path.

The presence of impurities which are electropositive to zinc in acid zinc electro- lyte causes changes to deposit morphology and reduced current efficiency. Glue may be added to control some impurity effects, but assaying for animal glue concentration is difficult and seldom done. Measurement of the activation overpotential for zinc deposition by cyclic voltammetry is used in some plants to monitor electrolyte quality and control glue additions. The deposit morphology and current efficiency of zinc deposition from commercial electrolyte were investigated for various glue additions in the presence of increased levels of antimony. Cyclic voltammetry was invest- i,ated as a method of optimizing glue additions in the presence of antimony. Scanning electron microscopy showed deposits characteristic of the impurity element present and the glue addition rate. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed some correlation between current efficiency and activation polarization potential. The importance of using tankhouse electrolytes where results are to be related to tankhouse operation was noted.

A computer model has been developed at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Central Engineering Dept. for preliminary economic evaluation of deep coal mine reserves. Since it was first formulated more than two years ago, the model has been used for the following purposes: (1) ranking studies of coal exploration projects, (2) marketing surveys, (3) preliminary sale and acquisition analysis of coal reserves, and (4) parametric analysis in conjunction with detailed feasibility studies.

"INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

In Canada, the only vibration regulations which apply across the entire country are intended to protect fish spawning areas. The Provinces and Territories regulate mines and quarries, and are responsible for setting vibration and airblast regulations. Some Provinces have set specific regulations, while others leave these restrictions to the mines inspectors who can set limits on a case by case basis. For the most part, it is left to individual municipalities to regulate blast vibrations and airblast from other blasting activities, which differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and in some cases are not enforced. Blasters working in different jurisdictions have to be aware of the applicable regulations for the area they are working.
