Massive banded Fe-Zn-Cu-Pb sulfide deposits in the Bagdad are associated with metamorphosed eugeosynclinal mafic volcanic and intrusives rocks Precambrian age. The geologic environment is very similar to that of the Jerome-Prescott area which lies 70 km. east of Bagdad. Mining of massive sulfides deposits began in 1917 on the Copper King mine in spite of its early discovery and the discovery of the Old Dick mine in 1882. The first shipments of zinc ore from the Copper King were hand sorted and averaged 46.89% Zn, 5.7 oz. Ag, 3.58% Pb and 1.68% Cu. Oxidized copper was first produced from the Old Dick mine in 1943~ In all, five deposits of massive sulfide ores have been mined in the Bagdad for a total production of nearly 2 million tons with an average grade of 12.0% Zn and 3.6% Cu. The largest deposit, the Bruce mine is currently closed because reduced metal prices and has produced a total of 823,000 tons of Zn-Cu ore to date. Mining of massive sulfide ore in the Bagdad area is presently idle. However, the potential for locating yet undiscovered ore bodies is good. Exploration for new ore bodies is difficult at best due to the complex geologic history of the area, the small size of individual ore bodies and lack of understanding as to the formation of massive sulfide deposits. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain a better understanding of the host rock formations through detailed geologic mapping, petrography and chemical analysis.

In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to study the reduction behavior of composite pellets consisting two different types of iron oxide fines (high and low grade) and coke or lignite fines as reducing agents. The reduction experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions and constant flow of nitrogen gas in the temperature range of 900 ? 1100 oC. The variables investigated are the reduction temperature, Cfix/Fe3O4 ratio, reduction time and reductant type. In the experiments carried out with Sivas Divrigi A head magnetite ores (high grade) at a temperature of 1100 oC, for 40 minutes and on the condition that Cfix/Fe3O4 ratio is 0.2, in which lignite and coke fines were used as reductant, degree of reduction was obtained as 91 % and 86 %, respectively. Whereas, in the experiments realized with Malatya-Hekimhan-Hasançelebi magnetite ores (low grade) on the same conditions by using lignite as the reductant, around 60 % degree of reduction was found.

Introduction Historically, the presence of methane has been a problem, mainly in and around the working areas of active coal mines, and only in these areas has drainage been considered. Drainage, where practical, has been achieved through the drilling of holes forward into the coal and the surrounding strata from the working area. These holes generaly have been short in length, although where methane drainage operations around a longwall face have been undertaken, the holes have had to be longer in order to adequately drain from the center of the face into the access gate roads. In recent years, attempts have been made to degasify the coal seams in advance of mining, without disruption of the mining cycle. This is done by drilling much longer horizontal holes through the coal in advance of the working area. Under the aegis of the federal government, methods have also been developed for draining coal seams of their methane content in advance of mining, but from shafts sunk from the surface, without using the active area of the mine as the location for the drill holes. Development of methane drainage has recently been encouraged by the potential use of the drained methane as a commercial energy source, with a need, therefore, to adequately organize a collection system, separate from mining the seam for coal. This has already been successfully accomplished, for example, in the Federal No. 2 mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. starting in 1975 (Johns). However, whether the system gains access to the coal through horizontal drilling from a pre- existing mine or via access through a separate shaft from the surface, long horizontal holes are required to adequately tap the methane reserve. It is to this regard-the actual drilling of the horizontal holes-that this paper is directed. It will examine potential benefits that may accrue, both in conventional horizontal hole drilling from a mine site underground, and also in drilling from the surface if a high pressure water jet drill is used to drill the degasification holes. Long Hole Drilling from an Underground Site Personnel from the Bureau of Mines have recently examined methods for conventional drilling of long horizontal holes to gain access for methane drainage. They have shown that it is possible (Cervik, Fields, and Aul) to drill out some 610 m using a conventional drilling system. Three types of bit were used in the program and by alternating between a drag bit, tricone bit, and plug bit, advance rates of between 0.6-3.6 m/min were achieved. Hole diameters varied from 7.6-9.2 cm in surface tests at bit thrusts of 1360 kg. A hole was then drilled and maintained in relative alignment within the coal seam for a distance of 640 m. Thrust levels had to be lowered to between 363-680 kg across the bit. Because the loads were smaller than those used in the surface trial, advance rates in the hole were of the order of 10-38 cm/min. The thrust level was lowered since it was found that the level of the thrust controlled the inclination of the drill so that, for example, a thrust of 363 kg caused the hole to incline downward, while at greater than 544 kg the hole inclined upward with the 9-cm-diam bit. Thrust levels increased 227 kg when the hole diameter was raised to 9.2 cm, although in such a case penetration rates in excess of 56 cm/min could be achieved. Horizontal Water Jet Drilling of Coal The University of Missouri-Rolla has recently undertaken research for Sandia Laboratories on the use of high pressure water jets as a means of drilling through coal. The initial experiment in this program called for drilling a hole horizontally into a coal seam from the side of a strip pit using water jets as the cutting mechanism. A very simple setup [(Fig. 1)] was used in this program and a 15-m hole was drilled at an approximate drilling speed of 1.2 m/min. The nozzle was designed so that the hole dimension was approximately 15 cm across [(Fig 2)] and the thrust was maintained at levels below 91 kg in moving the drill into the coal face. The system used was very crude and comprised a high pressure water jet drill enclosed within a 5.7-cm outer diameter galvanized water pipe to provide rigidity to the drilling system. This pipe sufficed to maintain hole alignment over the 15-m increment. While it is premature to make long-term predictions on ultimate applicability of this sytem to long hole drilling, certain inherent advantages of water jets can be delineated from research results and suggest considerable advantage to further research in development of this application. High pressure water was supplied at approximately 62 046 kPa from a 112-kW high pressure pump, with a 83 L/m flow through the supply line to the nozzle. The drilling system consisted of a nozzle rigidly attached to the front end of the galvanized piping. An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vrede-fort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well-known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies. South of the line X — Y (see Fig 2 and 5) the gravity anomalies are smaller over the LWW beds and magnetic anomalies suddenly become weaker and even change signs by becoming positive. This peculiar phe- nomenon is explained by faulting which truncated the nearly vertical LWW shales at depth. In this manner the mass of the LWW beds has been reduced together with the weakening of the negative magnetic anomalies by positive poles which occupy the truncated end. Furthermore, by uplifting the beds between f1 and f2 (Fig 2) positive polarization becomes predominant, thus causing positive magnetic anomalies. General The Vredefort dome is one of the internationally known geological structures, which, among others, has attracted the attention of numerous American geologists. It was for this latter reason that our aerial magnetic results over this structure were selected by us for publication in the United States of America. A full description of the exposed geology has been published by Nell and readers are referred to this paper, which is subject to only slight modifications inasmuch as the subdivision of the Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as WW system) is concerned. The Vredefort dome is about 60 miles southwest of Johannesburg. The WW system, after being exposed in the vicinity of Johannesburg, plunges with southerly dips beneath the Vent-ersdorp and Transvaal systems. Along a section southwest from Johannesburg, as shown diagrammatically in Fig 4, we see no outcrops of the WW system until the Vredefort dome, where the Upper and Lower WW system are wrapped around an almost circular arc of a granite mass. Here the whole WW system is overturned around the perimeter of a huge granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. Less than half of the circumference of this dome is exposed; the rest is covered by Karroo dolerites and sediments. The determination of the exact shape of the concealed part of the dome has been a matter of considerable interest and obviously geophysical methods were eminently suited for obtaining this information. A good start was made with a gravimeter survey carried out by the Geological Survey of the Union of South Africa.2 Our own

at temperatures of 1150°, 1250°, and 1350°C for liquid copper sulphides ranging in composition from saturation with Cu to about 21.5 pct S. From the experimental data, activities of Cu, S, and Cu2S in the melts were calculated. Also, the results furnish a new determination of the location of the curve showing the compositions of Cu-saturoted sulphide melts in the CU-S constitution diagram. THE "white metal" made as an intermediate L product in converting copper matte to blister copper is a matte approximating Cu2S in composition. It has long been known that liquid Cu-S mattes can exist at a given temperature over an appreciable composition range, with S:Cu ratios ranging up from a lower limit corresponding to equilibrium of the matte with a liquid Cu phase. The Cu-saturated matte has somewhat less S than Cu2S, although previous measurements of the compositions of Cu-saturated mattes are not in good agreement.'" As the S:Cu ratio approaches and slightly exceeds that for Cu2S, the partial pressure of sulphur gas over the liquid matte rapidly approaches atmospheric pressure,5 so that Cu-S melts with much more S than Cu2S can be made and handled only in pressure apparatus. Accordingly, the liquid copper sulphides of interest in copper smelting and readily studied experimentally fall in a relatively narrow composi- tion range about Cu2S. The freezing points of Cu-S mattes show a maximum of 1129°C near the composition Cu, dropping to 1105oC for Cu-saturated mattes having less S and dropping under 1100°C for higher S mattes.' Estimates of the sulphur pressure and other thermodynamic properties of liquid Cu,S were made by Kelley; based on extrapolations from equilibrium measurements on solid Cu,S. More recently, Cox and coworkers' studied equilibria in the reaction: Cu,S + H, e 2Cu + H,S over the temperature range 700" to 1250°C. They measured equilibrium H2S:H2 ratios presumably with both the sulphide and the metal phase present, so that their data above the melting point of Cu,S should measure the S pressure of Cu-saturated sulphide melts. The sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides of several S:Cu ratios at their freezing points can be estimated from data given by Posnjak, Allen, and Merwin." However, beyond these few data, no systematic study seems to have been made of the relations of sulphur pressure and other chemical properties of liquid copper sulphides to composition and temperature. The measurements of the sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides reported in this paper represent a first step in the quantitative study of the chemistry of mattes. Similar work is planned on

The evolution of diverse types of heavy-duty vehicles that employ lead acid batteries. and The development of Galfan™ -- a zinc / 5% aluminum/mischmetal coating alloy designed to provided zinc-coated anti-corrosion protection in applications that are not well suited to traditional galvanizing. Because any product breakthrough must be accompanied by advancement and customer oriented thinking at every step in the chain of production and distribution, a concerted effort is required for market evolution to live up to its potential. As such, all those involved in the metals industries should not only track the progress made by technical and marketing innovations, they must participate as much as possible in their development and promotion.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

"INTRODUCTION Shotcrete lining forms an integral part of conventional tunneling and is widely applied for underground excavations. Early strength gain of the shotcrete is a crucial aspect for ground support and safety of operatives. Strength requirements are dependent on various factors such as lining thickness, ground type, excavation size and tunnel depth. The early strength gain is typically monitored using destructive tests, such as needle penetration, stud driving or coring samples for uniaxial compressive strength testing in the laboratory. Being destructive, these tests cannot be directly performed onto the lining without causing damage that must be repaired, which is a particular problem for permanent linings. For this reason and to avoid the need for operatives to work near to exposed ground and/or fresh shotcrete, these destructive tests are often performed on panels, which are sprayed at the same time as the tunnel lining. All current testing methods are also very local, testing only a small part of the lining or a panel, which may not be representative because the temperature history could be significantly different. Therefore, these tests do not provide an accurate or complete picture of the lining strength gain. New testing methods that are non-destructive and can scan the whole lining remotely would be extremely desirable. This paper describes a new method, using thermal imaging techniques, that achieves these aims. It also discusses the real-time on-site application of the method, providing insight into the experience gained and conclusions derived. Shotcrete Shotcrete used for tunnel linings requires immediate strength development. The strength development is a direct result of the hydration reaction of cementitious materials present in it. A progressive sequence of the hydration reaction changes it from a solid suspension (typically referred to as fresh concrete) to a solid skeleton with a porous network and thereafter, into a solid with predominantly discontinuous pores (Byfors 1980). In the case of shotcrete, early strength is needed to support the self-weight and then continuing early age strength gain is required to begin to support ground loads. These strength requirements, along with other workability needs, are met by careful concrete mix design, the use of admixtures, such as accelerator and superplasticizer (BS EN 934-5 2007), and supplementary cementitious materials, such as silica fume."

This interpretation of the mining laws of British Honduras has been prepared from the best available information in Washington and is released subject to amplification or correction, if necessary, by United States foreign-service officers. INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.

"The continuous mining machine is a key piece of equipment used in underground coal mining operations. Over the past several decades these machines have been involved in a number of mine worker fatalities. Proximity detection systems have been developed to avert hazards associated with operating continuous mining machines. Incorporating intelligent design into proximity detection systems allows workers greater freedom to position themselves to see visual cues or avoid other hazards such as haulage equipment or unsupported roof or ribs. However, intelligent systems must be as safe as conventional proximity detection systems. An evaluation of the 39 fatal accidents for which the Mine Safety and Health Administration has published fatality investigation reports was conducted to determine whether the accident may have been prevented by conventional or intelligent proximity. Multiple zone configurations for the intelligent systems were studied to determine how system performance might be affected by the zone configuration. Researchers found that 32 of the 39 fatalities (82%) may have been prevented by both conventional and intelligent proximity systems. These results indicate that, by properly configuring the zones of an intelligent proximity detection system, equivalent protection to a conventional system is possible. INTRODUCTION Underground coal miners are exposed to a variety of hazards on a daily basis. Among coal and rock dust exposure, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, and the potential for fires and explosions, operating and working with heavy machinery poses a significant risk to miner safety. One of the most hazardous jobs is operating or working nearby a continuous mining machine (CMM). According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 39 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a CMM since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are now required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines with the exception of full-face CMMs [1]. Commercially available proximity detection (cPD) systems are based on the principle of magnetic flux density (B-field). Typically, four magnetic field generators are positioned on a CMM, and personal alarm devices (PADs) are worn by the miners that detect magnetic flux density difference. As a miner wearing a PAD gets closer to the machine, the flux density increases. Zones can be constructed around the machine so that an alarm will trigger on the PAD based on the flux density."

This report describes the construction and calibration of two ice calorimeters and includes results of high-temperature heat-content measurements, made by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on rubidium fluoride, hafnium tetrafluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide. The heats and entropies of fusion of rubidium fluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide have been calculated at their respective melting points using equations derived from the experimental heat-content data. Hafnium tetrafluoride did not melt within the range of temperatures investigated. Heat and entropy of transition of cesium chloride from the alpha to the beta form were also determined. INTRODUCTION Free-energy data usually afford the cheapest and quickest means of determining the feasibility of experimentally untested reactions. For known reactions, free-energy data show the variation of the equilibrium constant with temperature and make it possible to calculate, without experiment, the maximum ratio of product to raw material for a given chemical process.

Pressure oxidative treatment of whole ores and/or mineral concentrates is used to leach or liberate metals of value for downstream recovery. Silver, when present, is often lost in processing, precipitating as a cyanide-insoluble jarosite in the residue. Depending on pressure oxidation conditions, the degree of silver loss to jarosite can vary dramatically. Batch bench-scale testwork is often performed to define that loss, and then assess the implications in continuous operations. This paper focusses specifically on the impact of CESL pressure oxidation conditions on silver recovery, and discusses limitations of batch bench-scale testing as well as means of overcoming these limitations to better predict silver recovery in the scale up from bench-scale to continuous operations. Since silver is only partially soluble in both sulphate and chloride media, it will gradually leach and deport to a jarosite as oxidation progresses. When a silver-insoluble anion, for example iodide, is dosed prior to oxidation, there is a marked improvement in silver recovery from batchgenerated residue; however, that benefit is not consistently seen in continuous operations. The difference has been attributed to the dynamic solution conditions in the batch test, specifically the first few moments of oxidation. Using these principles, a predictive correlation has been established between initial leach concentrations of iron and acid and ultimate silver recovery with iodide addition.

Equipment is the primary cause of injury in 11% of all mining accidents and a secondary cause in another 10%. Purchasers should select new equipment carefully to ensure that the machine incorporates good ergonomic design criteria that maximize the safety of their mine workers. One potential problem area is the workstation-the control center of the machine. Safety problems often occur when the workstation provides insufficient clearance or visibility to the operator or has controls that are difficult to reach. This is especially true for underground mines, where confined space is an issue. In reclined or stooped postures, operators will have less strength and agility and often experience reduced visibility. We have conducted and published much research in Human Factors design of mining machine workstations. This information is currently being compiled into a series of Human Factors design recommendation reports. The reposts dl cover many topics, including workstation layout, control design, seating, and visibility. Each topic has a list of basic or first principles of design. Understanding these principles is the key to designing or purchasing a workstation that is both safe and efficient. Following is a sampling of these main topics and first principles.

Mining projects depend on the amount and quality of the mineral reserves, which in turn depend on the amount and quality of the mineral resources. Only Measured and Indicated Resources may be converted to mineral reserves and Inferred Resources may not, with certain exceptions, be used in economic studies. Responsibility for the estimation of mineral resources rests with the Qualified Person (QP) and there is a wealth of literature, text books and case studies to guide the QP. Responsibility for the classification of the mineral resources also rests with the QP. While there is some industry guidance and common practice on approaches to resource classification on which the QP can draw, the process is (or should be) heavily dependent on the exercise of judgement by the QP. However, this inevitably leads to situations where, for example, one QP?s Inferred Resource is another QP?s Indicated Resource. If the QP?s judgement is poorly reasoned or illogical (as is sometimes the case), it can have a major impact on the project, often with substantial cost or value implications. Project managers and company executives should not unquestioningly accept QP?s classification decisions and should apply the same intensity of due diligence that they apply to other critical elements of the project.

"An innovative process for removing copper cyanide complexes including silver and zinc from cyanidation circuits has been developed. The technology was based on the inducing the nucleated precipitation of copper and silver in a tube serpentine reactor, using sodium sulfide as the precipitate and sulfuric acid as pH control. The results showed that pH had a great effect on copper cyanide removal efficiency and the optimum pH was about 3 to 3.5. At this pH value copper cyanide removal efficiency could be achieved above 97 and 99 % ,when influent copper concentration ions were 650 and 900 ppm respectively. In this process (sulphidizaton-acidification-recycle-thickening), the cyanide associated with the copper cyanide complexes is released as HCN gas under weakly acidic conditions, allowing it to be recycled back to the cyanidation process as free cyanide. This system was successfully commercial applied at Minera William in Mexico.IntroductionThe recovery of gold and silver from minerals and concentrates with cyanide is an important hydrometallurgical process, which has been studied for more than 124 years. Patented by MacArthur in 1888 [1], the process relies on the fact that gold dissolves in aerated cyanide solutions to produce the gold cyanide complex. The stoichiometry by wich this reaction occurs is known as the Elsner equation as shown here. Silver is accomplished in the same fashion."
