CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,' and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles deter- mined by the manner and intensity of cold working. We must freely concede that there are conceptions of lattice alteration, apart from that of simple fragmentation, which would account for an increasing number of lattice positions according to X-ray spectrographic observation as the degree of deformation increased.

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 pm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry.

This paper is the second of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. "Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the reuse of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. Therefore, it is imperative to check the recirculation while designing and operating booster fan for a ventilation network. This paper deals with an algorithm based C++ program to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program was implemented to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine network. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

Determining the minimum amount of inert material that can be used between explosive columns is a complex problem. Using too little inert material can result in detonator/primer failure, either by sympathetic detonation of or failure to fire of the subsequent explosive column(s). Propagation type failure results when inert material length between charges is small enough that the subsequent (delayed) deck fires more or less instantly. In this situation, the primer, detonator, or bulk product is initiated by the shock wave from the earlier firing deck. This type of failure may be un-noticed until the vibration/airblast report is examined.

During the past two years the writer has been traveling in the Lewis and Clarke timber reserve, locating the boundaries and reference-monuments for the Geological Survey. The Lewis and Clarke reserve lies in northwestern Montana. The region is very mouutainous, the main range of the Rocky mountains passing through it, dividing the waters of the Columbia and Missouri rivers. The mountains do not rise in one important and well-defined backbone, but in a series of parallel ridges, striking nearly northwest and southeast. Between these ridges, and, in general, parallel to them, are the drainage-systems. Beginning at the west, the rivers are the Swan, emptying into the Flathead lake, the South fork and the Middle fork of Flathead river, both emptying into the main Flathead river, which, in turn, empties into the lake of that name. The continental divide passes through the reserve from the southeast corner to the middle of the northern boundary, and the stream of most importance east of it is the Sun river, which heads well toward the north, and flows southeasterly and then eastward, and, emerging from the mountains, flows across the great plain of' the Missouri river. The southern boundary is drained by the Big Blackfoot river, flowing westward; the northern boundary, by the several branches of the Flathead river. The accompanying map (which is only a sketch, and does not represent the final work of the Geological Survey in this forest-reserve) shows clearly the parallel systems of drainage and ridges. Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. "IntroductionT'HE PRODUCTION of gravel and sand may be considered to be the major mining operation in the Lower Fraser Valley of British Columbia. At least thirty pits are in operation with a yearly production probably in excess of two million yards and a value in excess of one million five hundred thousand dollars before crushing, washing, and sizing. The value of the finished products would probably be double the above figure.Since 1949, the writer and his co-workers have been engaged in the geological investigation of the Lower Fraser valley and adjoining Coast mountains for the Geological Survey of Canada. The study, which is not yet completed, includes both bed-rock geology and geology of the unconsolidated sediments lying above bed-rock. In a rapidly expanding industrial area, .an advance knowledge of the geology may• greatly aid in future 'planning, and in many cases may .prevent not only the wastage of large sums of money, 'but possible disaster. Some of the present and future applications in which geological information in the Lower Fraser valley should be of value are as follows: the development of domestic, irrigation, industrial, and municipal groundwater supplies; drainage for industrial sites,, roadbeds, and farmlands; flood control along the Fraser river and smaller streams in the area; the location of dam sites, of major tunnels for water supply •and sewage, of road-beds, of foundation sites for large buildings .and other engineering undertakings in which geology may aid; the evaluation of oil and gas •possibilities; the production of building stone; and the production of sand and gravel, the subject with which this paper is primarily concerned."

Recent technological breakthroughs in the fields of ceramics, medicine, aerospace engineering and electronics (semi- and superconductors) are constantly creating new uses and an ongoing increasing demand for a variety of rare valuable trace metals. These so-called high-tech elements such as hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti,) niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE), many of them of strategic importance, occur inter alia at elevated and potentially economic concentrations in marine ferromanganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts, making those deep sea deposits potential future resources of these metals. As these metals are mostly present in the lattice of the manganese and iron phases, which are strongly intergrown, rather than in separate mineral phases within the nodules and crusts (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), reductive dissolution of the host phases is a prerequisite to release and dissolve the valuable metals. To evaluate the association of these rare valuable metals with their mineral carrier phases, sequential leaching experiments were carried out on selected samples in a first step in our project.

The fundamentals of human nature don't change much from generation to generation, or even from century to century. Except for the spur of necessity and the lure of reward and ad venture, few of us would bestir ourselves unduly. The general welfare has little appeal to the average individual. Its promotion comes about mainly as a by-product to individual efforts directed at more personal benefits and satisfactions. In discussing incentives for the mining industry, we really are talking about incentives for people who devote their energies and resources to mining. The vigorous and productive mining industry as we have known it was the product of the varied incentives we have known in the past: the lure of great financial reward if you struck it rich; the thrill of romance and adventure in the search for mineral wealth, usually along the frontiers 'of civilization; the satisfaction of developing a great, productive enterprise by the application of skill, courage, and determination in the face of obstacles. Back of the prospector and engineer were other venturesome persons willing to take a flyer with their savings in a grubstake, or in stock in a promising mining venture, hoping for large returns, but reconciled to take a loss and try again with the next opportunity. It is free enterprise-a chance for high profits, but a chance also of total loss-that created the great mining industry of this country and of the world. Free enterprise has given us, in the United States, the greatest productive system in the world, the highest standard of living, the most abundant life. The lure of gold-whether from the ground or merely incidental to the discovery and development of our mineral resources-pushed our frontiers westward across the country and northward into Canada and Alaska far in advance of the staid course of agriculture and commerce. No one guaranteed success to our forebears as they risked life and fortune in developing a new country. Self-reliance was the backbone of our economic and spiritual Progress and achievements. Our neighbors had little time to spare from their own problems. And though there was a willingness among the pioneers to help one another, they didn't lean too much on one another.

Sodium-aluminum and potassium-aluminum silicates are among the more important rock-forming minerals of the earth's crust. They also appear as constituents of some metallurgical slags and of some refractory materials. Consequently, knowledge of their thermodynamic properties is interesting and valuable from several viewpoints. This paper reports experimental determinations of the low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.16° K. of albite, jadeite, and nephelite it the sodium-aluminum silicate series and of adularia, ferriferous orthoclase, leucite and kaliophilite in the potassium-aluminum silicate series. Also high-temperature heat-content and entropy increments about 298.16° K. are reported for albite, jadeite, nephelite, and carnegieite in the sodium-aluminum silicate series. Except for a few high-temperature heat-content values for albite, all these data are available for the first time.

INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco's Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970's, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. "Micropiles are small diameter, bored, grouted-in-place piles incorporating steel casing and/or reinforcements. The omission of micropiles from most United States building codes has resulted in the application of varying standards for design and installation. The ADSC/DFI Micropile Committee has developed a proposed section for the 2006 edition of the International Building Code (IBC 2006) covering micropiles. The proposed IBC 2006 micropile code section is presented, along with comparisons to existing micropile codes and guidelines. A discussion section is provided to clarify sections of the proposed code. IntroductionMicropiles, defined as small diameter (typically less than 12 inches outer diameter), bored, grouted-in-place piles incorporating steel casing and/or reinforcements, are becoming common foundation elements for new construction, retrofits, and emergency repairs. Developed in Europe in the 1950's and used in United States practice since the late 1970's, micropiles are typically not addressed in building codes, particularly in the United States. As a result, micropiles are often reviewed by building officials to a variety of standards, including drilled shafts, caissons, cast-in-place bored piles, and concrete filled pipe piles. None of these adequately address the unique design and construction aspects of micropiles. Therefore, it became apparent to the foundation design and construction community that a micropile-specific code section was required.To that end, the International Association of Foundation Drilling and the Deep Foundations Institute (ADSC/DFI) Micropile Committee appointed a subcommittee in October 2003 to develop and submit a proposed micropile code section for the 2006 IBC. The subcommittee members included the two co-authors, as well as Tom Richards (Nicholson Construction Company), Tom Armour (DBM Contractors, Inc.), John Wolosick (Hayward Baker, Inc.), Allen Cadden (Schnabel Engineering) and Matt Niermann (Schnabel Foundation Company). At the time of the writing of this paper, the proposed code section has been presented at the IBC public hearing during which it was modified slightly. Final adoption (or rejection) will be determined by the IBC at the final action hearing in September 2005. The attached code section is the revised version following the public review hearings."

Methane drainage methods can be broadly classified as surface or underground. Surface methods make use of vertical and slant holes. The underground method discussed in the present paper involves horizontal drilling from shaft bottoms and from locations along the periphery of mines. Every foot of hole drilled in coal from under- ground locations is productive and gas flows increase as hole length increases. Therefore, underground techniques have a great potential for producing large-volume flows of methane. Pumps to dewater the horizontal holes are not necessary because gas pressure forces the water out of the hole. Methane can be recovered through the use of a simple and inexpensive gas-water separator. Hydraulic fracturing, which has been used successfully to stimulate gas flows from vertical holes, has not proved practical in the case of horizontal holes.

La explotación de minas de cielo abierto requiere de la estabilidad de los taludes puesto que estos aseguran el eficiente minado de los bancos inferiores y garantizan las condiciones para los servicios auxiliares. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el método de voladura controlada como el más adecuado para la estabilidad del talúd en explotaciones de límites finales. Dentro de este método, el criterio de velocidad pico de partícula refiere el grado de vibración producido en el terreno por los disparos, ajustándose en el cálculo de carga de los taladros. Sin embargo, en el caso de la mina Toquepala y por razones de índole estructural, el método de minado se aplica de forma moderada la zona Este. Asimismo las condiciones de este método quedan supeditadas a las condiciones geológicas, la infraestructura que se desea proteger y a los servicios auxiliares a complementarse.

Energy dissipation and fragmentation of rock is of interest for mine-to-mill operations in order to understand breakage and to minimize energy consumption during blasting at the mine site, and comminution at the processing plant. In this regard, high velocity impact breakage of long granite cores, called bars, has been studied with instrumented strain gages to follow the energy dissipation gradient along the bar length resulting from the strain waves generated by impact. As a result of high velocity impact, three zones have been identified (fragmentation, fracture, and elastic) and these three zones have been characterized in 3D using X-ray tomography. The fragmentation zones of the granite bars were studied in detail to describe the particle size distribution and the particle shape characteristics. Finally, the experimental energy dissipation for the fragmentation zone was found to be in close agreement with the expected energy calculated from the Bond work equation, if the anisotropic granite particles are defined by length rather than by sieve size.

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?
