During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. Multilayered ceramic-metal composites were produced by solid state diffusion bonding of polycrystalline alumina and three Al alloys containing 1 to 2%Sr, 2% Mg and Mg + Si (5057 Al alloy), The multilayered structures were fabricated at 610°C under a compressive stress of 3 MPa for 2 hours in He-5%H atmosphere, The ceramic-metal interfaces were studied by SEM and TEM equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Addition of 1 wt % Sr to Al promoted good adhesion, without producing any interfacial products, while the Al-2%Sr was poor in this regard due to the presence of dispersed A14Sr which is an intrinsic phase in the Al-Sr phase system, The Al-2%Mg alloy produced a continuous film at the interface, which was characterized to be MgAl2O4. Al alloys containing Mg and Si (5057 commercial alloy) produced not only the spinel structure (MgAl2O4), but another phase rich in Mg and Si (close to Mg2Si), These latter interfacial reaction products were not the intrinsic phases in Al-Mg alloys, and were reaction products at the Al2O3 ?Al alloy interfaces.

The effects of gain size on the room-temperature tensile properties of commercial(A- 70)-purity and iodide-purity titanium were investigated by concurrent tensile testing and thin-foil electron transmission studies. The mechanical tests showed that the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses could be expressed by relations of the Hall-Petch type. The magnitude of the grain size effect on the yield stress was larger for commercial-purity than for high-purity titanium, but in both materials it was intermediate between that typically observed for fcc and for bcc metals. The effect of strain on the gain size sensitivity of the flow stress was found to reflect the grain size dependence of strain hardening. The electron transmission study indicated that the tensile behavior could be accounted for in terms of the dislocation densities and distributions formed during deformation. It was concluded that the effect of grain size on strength could be attributed to a relationship between grain size and the dislocation densities generated in initiating and sustaining plastic flow, the difference in stress levels being due to strain hardening. The relationships between recrystallized grain size, uniaxial tensile properties, and dislocation substructure have not been explored in any detail for a titanium. With titanium and its alloys finding increasing applications in aerospace systems, such information has become essential. The research described in this paper had two objectives: first, to document the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses of unalloyed a titanium by the tensile testing of recrystalliied specimens at room temperature; second, to attempt an interpretation of the mechanical test behavior in terms of the dislocation structures formed on deformation, as observed by transmission electron microscopy of thin foils prepared from deformed tensile specimens. The observations reported here are restricted to room-temperature deformation; the effect of temperature on the yield and flow stresses of a titanium and the athermal nature of the contribution of grain size to the flow stress have been discussed elsewhere.1"3 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Two purity grades of unalloyed titanium have been investigated: Crucible Steel A-70, a typical commer- cial-purity product, and a high-purity iodide grade supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. Chemical analyses for interstitial impurity contents are given in Table I, together with values for the total interstitial atom fractions in terms of oxygen equivalents, which were calculated by the method outlined previously.4 ,5 According to the manufacturer's nominal analysis, the A-70 grade also contains about 3700 ppm of Fe. The A-70 grade was supplied as 1/4-in.-diam centerless-ground rod. The iodide grade was supplied as crystal bar which was consolidated to approximately 1/4-in.-diam rod by a single, rapid, molten zone pass, using electron beam heating. The 1/4-in. rods were cold-swaged to 0.078-in.-diam wires and 2-in. lengths were recrystallized in a vacuum of -5 x 10-5 torr, giving grain sizes in the range 0.8 to 30 . The thermal treatments and resulting grain sizes are summarized in Table 11. Since there was in no case any obvious sign of a bimodal dis tribution of grain sizes, the grain size values quoted in Table I1 are those obtained from mean linear intercept measurements involving >I00 grains. For the two coarse grain sizes the measurements were made using conventional optical techniques. It was noted during these determinations that the etchants used (10 pct HF; 30 pct HN03; 60 pct H20 and 2 pct HF; 2 pct H202; 96 pct H20 were both tried) etched grain boundaries very nonuniformly and optical polarization effects had to be employed to reveal boundaries which might otherwise have been missed. It was found that this problem became more acute with the finer grain sizes as the usefulness of polarization diminished.

Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

During 1958, prospecting parties working for the Mackenzie Syndicate in the Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories, identified tungsten mineralization and located the property now being developed by the Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. Scheelite mineralization, associated with pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite, occurs in lime silicate skarn replacement zones within a limestone-chert-argillite series intruded by granitic dykes originating from the ? main batholithic mass underlying the sedimentary beds. The results of surface outcrop sampling and 15,000 feet of grid-pattern diamond drilling have been combined to outline an orebody estimated to contain 1.32 million tons, grading 2.51 per cent WO after applying a 10 per cent dilution factor for mining purposes. T HE property of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. is located in the upper Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories. Skarn-type replacement deposits containing scheelite mineralization are .situated between elevations of 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level along the east flank of the mountain range forming the boundary between the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. The nearest supply center for the area is Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, located at Milepost 635 on the Alaska Highway.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

Due to falling metal prices and depletion of ore reserves, lead- zinc mining in the Leadville, Colo., area gradually came to a halt in the 1950's. Exploration work continued, however, and by 1969 sufficient ore had been blocked out to warrant sinking a shaft and erecting a new concentrator to treat 700 tpd. The new shaft and concentrator were to be located in Iowa Gulch several miles east of Leadville at an elevation of 11,100 ft. The Leadville project is a joint venture between Newmont Mining Co. and Asarco, with Asarco being the operator. Design work began in the fall of 1969. Engineering was done by Torkelson Engineering Co. of Salt Lake City in conjunction with the central engineering department of Asarco. The plant was constructed by Stearns-Roger Corp. Construction began in the spring of 1970 and the plant went onstream in April 1971.

"IntroductionInco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operation s are situated near the city of Sudbury, 589 km west of Montreal, and 363 km north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite , and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51 000 tons per day.The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cu.ft/min. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totaling 11 200 kW (15 000 hp).The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The now of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential.There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Exchanger and Stobie Ice Stopes."

Thermodynamic calculations based on the free energy minimization method were performed for the system Ti-Fe-Mn-0-C1-C in order to evaluate the chemistry associated with the chlorination of an ilmenitic concentrate using CCl4. In the calculations various weight ratios of FeTi03/ CC14, a , were considered, which varied between 0.32 to 0.98 at temperatures ranging from 673 K to 1273 K , at atmospheric pressure. The results obtained indicated that the operating conditions for a process in a packed bed reactor, which implies the chlorination of both Fe and Ti, are 0.39 < a < .49 at T 1173 K.

This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d&apos;Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

The mining industry has been slow at adopting the latest management philosophies from other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, and in retrospect, with good cause. With the plethora of three-letter-acronyms such as TQM, JIT, TPM and now, BPR each touted as the panacea for profit improvement, you wonder if you must choose one or attempt to embrace them all! In truth, each new insight into organisational behaviour bears some investigation. This paper looks at the underlying principles and elements of successful change strategies, and how several mining companies, including coal mines, in Australia, Chile and Canada, are applying these principles to their operations. These examples illustrate the need to think radically, and to view mining as an overall process delivering value to the customer rather than a collection of functional silos. They also show that often, a continuous improvement initiative is not enough when a fundamental redesign, a paradigm shift, is needed for a performance breakthrough.

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and St&#229;hlbr&#246;st, H, 2017. In October of 2002, the author was retained by Public Works and Government Services Canada, on behalf of the Department of National Defense, to design, construct and test the effectiveness of a bubble curtain system at an underwater demolition range, near Victoria, BC. The purpose of the bubble curtain was to reduce the potential for fish mortalities at the site. This paper presents some of the elements of the design, along with the results of overpressure monitoring during blasting and compares the results of fish mortality and animal behaviors with and without the bubble curtain in operation.

THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake&apos;s operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation. Geology and Mining Situation The Homestake mine lies in the northern Black Hills in an area of Pre-Cambrian rocks exposed by the erosion of the paleozoic formations which covered the Black Hills. The Pre-Cambrian rocks in the vicinity of Lead comprise metamorphosed sediments with a total thickness of about 20,000 ft. The oldest formation, the Poorman, is ankeritic carbonate schist. The next oldest, the Homestake formation, host rock for all Homestake orebodies, is a siliceous iron-magnesium carbonate schist. The younger formations are dom-inantly argillaceous with some quartzites. Tertiary intrusive rocks cut all formations. The Pre-Cambrian rocks have undergone extreme isoclinal folding. Superimposed on this intricate folding are zones of shear folding which cross the isoclinal folds at small angles. The Homestake orebodies are pipelike replacements of the Pre-Cambrian Homestake formation where certain cross folds intersect some earlier isoclinal folds. These orebodies plunge flatly to the southeast at variable angles locally as steep as 45". The orebodies are replacement areas where numerous vein quartz of irregular shape have formed with surrounding zones of chlorite alterations containing disseminated sulfides and metallic gold. Where the numerous individual quartz veins with the sulfide and gold-bearing alteration zones are close together, large irregular orebodies with a roughly elliptical plan outline result. These ore zones may be more than 200 ft wide and 700 ft long in plan area. They have followed down the plunge of certain severely folded structures with great persistence. Two vertical operating shafts, the Ross and Yates, serve the mine, one with rope capacity to reach the 4850 level, the other to the 5000 level.

In attempting to tell the general public about the coal industry&apos;s land reclamation efforts, we have often said, "We&apos;re not doing things by the book, because we&apos;re still writing it." Like any good catchphrase, the statement is not only striking but true. It is particularly true in the mountains of Appalachia, where the problems of mining; and of reclamation are made more intense by the nature of the terrain. Mining and reclaiming the land "by the book&apos; --which is to say by the methods of contour mining traditionally used in hill country--hasn&apos;t worked too well. So a lot of conscientious coal operators and associations are trying new methods--new ways of mining, new machines for seeding and planting, and new species to seed. Not all their experience can be transplanted to other areas, and of course I don&apos;t believe that Appalachia is the only place where new methods are being developed. Nevertheless, there&apos;s enough action in Appalachia to make a detailed examination rewarding, so let&apos;s focus on the hills to see what&apos;s new.

Certain alloys1 that, as a result of quenching, are retained in the form of homoaeneous solid solution are known to increase in hardness and strength on standing at room temperature or on heating at slightly elevated temperatures. Other alloys2 that, on rapid cooling, are held in the form of homogeneous solid solution, as, for example, certain steels, behave in like manner on heating to somewhat higher temperatures. The observed increase in the hardness and strength of these alloys, referred to as " aging"&apos; or as "secondary hardness," is widely accepted as being occasioned, either in whole or in part, by the precipitation in submicroscopic form of such constituents as were held in supersaturated solid solution as a result of cooling in excess of a certain critical rate. In earlier discussions of the cause of age hardening or secondary hardness, the question of the hardness of the precipitated particles does not appear to have been raised. At present, however, the general opinion appears to be that age hardening and secondary hardness are occasioned by the precipitation of hard particles within the supersaturated solid substance.3 The authors may be wrong in their belief that the last is a prevailing opinion. The San Manuel oxide ore reserve ranges in depth from being exposed on the surface to lying 1000 ft. beneath a conglomerate layer all of which is confined in the subsidence zone of an active sulfide block caving operation. Present day recovery of the oxide copper values is either by open pit mining-dump leaching, or in-situ leaching of the oxide ore using dilute sulfuric acid solutions and solvent extraction/electrowinning processing of the pregnant leach solutions. Future plans are for continuation of leaching with expansion of reserves and increased processing rates. The state of the mining industry and copper in particular has not been good for a number of years. All of the producers that are still operating have made major adjustments in order to remain competitive. Magma Copper Co. is no exception.

The cost of drilling consumables is always a large component of any mine budget. It is important that this cost be carefully examined with a view to reducing the overall cost per inetre or at least minimising its escalation.At Renison it is considered that the only way to ensure drilling costs do not rise unduly is through a total system of control from purchase to disposal.In 1979 extension of an existing drill supply service contract was carefully examined and abandoned in favour of a hybrid system. This system is providing a great deal of control over the use of drilling consumables and has maintained a relatively constant cost per drilled metre over the last five years.Current consignment stock contracts for drilling consumables are strictly specified by the Technical Services section of the Mine Department and consumables purchased under these contracts are distributed and refurbished/sharpened by a contractor.The total result of this package is individual drilling items that achieve the best cost per metre and careful distribution and maintenance to ensure maximum life.
