With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (patent applied for) approach to retreating spiral middlings in a heavymedia cyclone circuit.

This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.

WHEN Professor Stock asked for a paper on the above subject, it was too late to prepare by June 1, or near that time, one that would involve any appreciable amount of experimental work or original research; but the suggestion was made that a review of the literature bearing on the subject might be submitted in good time, and that later this could be supplemented by any experimental data obtained during the summer, if experiments were carried out. In accordance with this suggestion, there are submitted the following notes on references found in the literature of recent years bearing on sulfur in gas. It is to be, understood that, ill general, these notes express the opinions of the authors whose papers are abstracted, not necessarily the opinions of the abstractors. Very little published information was found bearing directly on producer-gas sulfur, so this has been supplemented, in certain phases of the subject, by references to illuminating gas. Methods of analysis and processes for the elimination of sulfur from the gas are, without much doubt, very closely related in these two products. As in illuminating gas, sulfur is found in producer gas mainly as hydrogen sulfide, mixed with a much smaller and variable quantity of carbon bisulfide.1 The presence of minute quantities of other organic-sulfur compounds has been intimated, but no definite statement is made concerning these. The amount of sulfur present in producer gas is variable and depends on several conditions. The primary factor is the quantity of sulfur in the fuel, but the form in which the sulfur exists, the temperature of the producer, the air-steam ratio, and the efficiency of the scrubbing process are all determining factors. When the coal used contains less than 0.5 per cent. of sulfur, the sulfur in the gas will not exceed the quantity found in the average illuminating gas.2 Sulfur in producer gas may safely

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular, the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions, coupled with growing regulatory restrictions, have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective, such asset management makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth, and that is why we are in business. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the chief executive officer of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer-the Amax Gold shareholder? The gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed the third year with average prices below $12.85/ g ($400/oz). When finding, and/or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs are added, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have, at most, a 10-year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we do not become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities abound for increasing diminishing reserves. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantage of market conditions and that is precisely what Amax Gold has done. There are six components to running a successful gold business: • finding reserves through exploration, acquisition or joint venture, • financing the project, • permitting and constructing the project, • operating the project, • cash management and • communication.

Mercury is a toxic element that is associated with many industrial activities including the Bayer process. Mercury is known to enter the Bayer process with the bauxite feed material and has the potential to accumulate as the process solution is recycled. This paper explores the speciation of mercury in Bayer process streams. The process parameters considered are the oxidising-reducing potential, basicity and temperature. The results of a refinery circuit survey are presented and compared with the thermodynamic predictions. Electrochemical measurements on relevant synthetic systems are also included.

Solvent extraction of gallium from Bayer solution of Jajarm Alumina plant was investigated us-ing Kelex100 as extractant. Taguchi experimental design method was used in order to optimize the separation factor of Ga and Al. Optimum conditions were obtained as follows: Temperatuer: 65°C, volume ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase: 3.0:1.0, process time: 60min and organic phase containing 15vol.% Kelex100, 5vol.% isodecanol in kerosene. In this conditions, 74% gallium and 0.3% aluminum was extracted and separation factor was obtained 828.63.

Abstract: The amount of published literature pertaining to the field of rock mechanics has increased markedly in recent years. Whilst computer applications aid our understanding of the mechanisms of pillar instability, the applications do not take into account the effect of time; thus the determined pillar factor of safety has limited meaning. A more realistic approach would be to consider pillar stability in terms of time to failure. However such an approach would require a reasonable estimate of the in-situ pillar mass strength and a validated methodology linking the time to failure with in-situ pillar mass strength and the geometric layout of the working. Résumé: Le volume de bibliographie au sujet de la mécanique des roches a augmenté considérablement ces derniêres années. Alors que des modeles informatiques aident a la compréhension des mécanismes d'instabilité de pilliers, ces modèles ne prennent pas en compte les effets du temps; ainsi, la determination du coefficient de surete du pillier a un sens limité. Une approche plus réaliste devrait considérer la stabilité du pillier en fonction du temps de défaillance. Cependant une telle approche exigerait une estimation raisonnable de la resistance du massif rocheux du pillier ainsi qu'une méthodologie qui lie le temps de défaillance avec la résistance in-situ du massif rocheux du pillier et la géometrie de l'excavation souterraine. Daher haben die errechneten Sicherheitsfaktoren der Pfeiler nur begrenzte Bedeutung. Eine realistischere Bewertung wäre, die Stabilität der Pfeiler auf Grund der Zeit bis zum Verfall zu beurteilen. So ein Verfahren würde eine Schätzung der in-situ Gebirgsfestigkeit und eine validierte Methologie, die die Zeit zum Verfall in Abhängigkeit der in-situ Pfeilerfestigkeit und der geometrischen Auslage der Grube zusammenbringt, brauchen.

The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

A study has been made of the material balance-fluid flow method of estimating reserves and degree of water drive from pressure and production history data. By considering the effect of random pressure errors it is shown that in a particular example a standard deviation of three and one-half pounds in each of ten pressure survey? permits the determination of the reserves with a standard deviation of 8 per cent and the water drive with a standard deviation of 15 per cent, assuming that certain basic geologic data are correct. It is believed that this method of estimating reserves and water drive is useful and reliable in a number of cases. The method is particularly valuable when reservoir pressure data are accurate within a very few pounds, but may also be applied with less accurate pressure data if a relatively large reservoir pressure decline occurs early in the life of the field, as for example in an under-saturated oil field. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the magnitude of reserves and degree of water drive present in any newly discovered petroleum reservoir is necessary to early application of proper production practices. A number of investigators have contributed to methods of relating reserves, degree of water drive, and production and pressure history. 1-8 Three types of problems of increasing complexity may be mentioned. If a reservoir is known to have no water drive. and if the ratio of the volume of the reservoir occupied by gas to the volume of the reservoir occupied by oil (which ratio permits fixing the overall compressibility of the reservoir) is known, then only one further extensive reservoir property remains to be determined, namely the magnitude of the reserves. A straightforward application of material balance considerations will permit this determination. The problem becomes very much more difficult if we wish to determine not only the magnitude of the reserves but also the magnitude of water drive, if any, which is present. In principle, a combination of material balance and fluid flow considerations will permit this evaluation. Finally, if neither the magnitude of reserves, the degree of water drive, nor the ratio of oil to gas present in the reservoir is known and it is desired to determine all three of these variables, the problem could in principle be solved by a fluid flow-material balance analysis which determines the overall compressibility of the reservoir at various points in its history. The change in compressibility with pressure would provide a means of determining the ratio of gas to liquid present, since the compressibilities of gas and liquid vary differently with pressure variation. However, in practice this problem is probably so difficult as to defy solution in terms of basic data precision apt to be available.' It is the purpose of this discussion to illustrate the second case, which involves the determination of two unknown variables, single phase reserves and degree of water drive, from pressure and production history and fluid property data, and to study the precision with which these unknowns can be determined in this manner in a particular case. Although an electric analyzer developed by Bruce as used in making the calculations to be described, numerical methods necessary in carrying out the process have been devised and have been applied for this purpose. Schilthuis,' for example, developed a comprehensive equation for the material balance in a reservoir. He combined this with a simplified water drive equation, assuming that the ratio of free gas to oil was fixed by geological data and that a period of constant pressure operation at constant rate of production was available to determine the constant for his water drive equation. On this basis he was able to compute the reserves and predict the future pressure history of the reservoir. Hurst developed a generalized equation permitting the calculation of the water drive by unsteady state expansion from a finite aquifer. He showed in a specific case how the water influx calculated by his equation, using basic geologic and reservoir data to fix the constants, matched the water influx required by material balance considerations. Old3 illustrated the simultaneous use of Schilthuis' material balance equation and Hurst's fluid flow equation for the determination of the magnitude of reserves and a water drive parameter from pressure and production history. He used this method to calculate the future pressure history of the reservoir under assumed operating conditions. As a basis for determining reserves, Old assumed a value for his water drive parameter and calculated a set of values for the reserves, using the initial reservoir pressure and each successive measured pressure. The sum of the absolute values of the deviations of the resulting reserve numbers from their mean value was taken as a criterion of the closeness of fit to the experimental data possible with the water drive parameter assumed. New values of the water drive parameter were then assumed and new sets of the reserves calculated until a set of reserves numbers having a minimum deviation from the average was established. A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits; thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. This paper presents a review of both primary and secondary processing technologies for the recovery of rhenium.

From site demolition, to design, to construction, Detroit's new Tiger Stadium project is required to be completed within a short 2 ½ years from award of the design-build contract. Such extreme schedule requirements together with somewhat difficult ground conditions at the site, resulted in several challenges in the design and construction of the deep foundation system for the stadium. During the geotechnical investigation, an intermittent water bearing sand layer was encountered overlying the hardpan at the site. As a result, some concern developed regarding the potential for collapse of caisson bells within this layer, as well as the potential for flooding of the caissons during drilling. Although sand and/or ground water was encountered within about half of the caissons, standard drilling and belling methods were used, and adverse conditions were controlled in almost all cases through expeditious drilling, inspection and concreting of the caissons. This paper will present a summary of the ground conditions, design and specification requirements, and construction methods used to successfully install the caissons for this project.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

Dartbrook Mine (Australia) works the Wynn seam, which has a moderate propensity for spontaneous combustion. Prior to any mining a commitment was made to place a segregation barrier pillar between longwall blocks 4 and 5. This was to segregate goaves and improve management controls in the event of a spontaneous combustion event within previous longwall goaves. An alternative to the segregation barrier known as a Consolidated Barrier was developed; firstly as a concept, then computer modelled and finally field tested. It consists of a wider than normal chain pillar with concrete Mega-Seals placed in cut-throughs. Permeability and stress measurements were conducted in the surrounding coal of the seal. Remote monitoring took place as the longwall face approached and then passed by the seal. Results indicate that as the longwall retreats past the seal, horizontal stress increases. The additional stress leads to an increase in confinement and a subsequent reduction in permeability.

It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

Lewis, on behalf of the local committee of arrange ments, made a short address of greeting to the members assembled, and then introduced Gov. A. H. Holley, of Lakeville, Conn. Gov. Holley addressed the Institute as follows: Gentlemen, we give you cordial welcome to a mining, manufac turing, and agricultural country, of which we are not a little proud. We welcome you as an association, and as individuals. We invite you to an inspection of our resources, and to our methods of im proving them. We appreciate the results of your efforts in past years, and we anticipate good from your advice and counsel in the future. You are in the vicinity of some of the oldest mining and manufacturing operations in iron in our country. It will be our pleasure to conduct you to a mine which was worked for more than a half century before our country achieved national inde pendence, and to point out to you the spot where the products of this mine were wrought into cannon and shot during the progress of our Revolution. We can show you also a far larger area of mining country than was supposed to exist in this vicinity at that early day. There are, within a radius of thirty miles from this spot, ten mines at least that have been extensively worked, and there are as many more that have been occasionally worked, with a fair degree of success. All the mines that are wrought to any extent produce excellent qualities of iron, while many of them in various combinations produce as good material for the manufacture of steel, car wheels, axles, and many other purposes, as can be found in ally country. The old Salisbury iron retains its reputation for tensile strength unsurpassed, when made entirely from the ore of the old mine. The progress that has been made in the development of these mines since the days of the pickaxe, when the product was trans ported in pounds upon horseback, to those of the steam-engine, which now moves hundreds of tons per day, presents, indeed, a

Mine financing, or providing adequate capital for developing and bringing a mining property into production, is an essential requirement for a successful operation. Today it presents a different picture than even twenty-five years ago. The day appears to be gone when a mining property could pay its own way from grass roots to production. The country has been quite thoroughly combed for surface showings from which sufficient initial profit could be immediately garnered to pay for further development and production facilities. The four M's for success in mining-mineral, market, management, and money-are still essential, but doubled or tripled wage costs and steep advances in cost of equipment and supplies throw increased emphasis on adequate capital funds for converting a prospect into a producer. Consequently, the old picturesque, although seldom rewarding, grub- staking procedure where a single venturesome citizen might advance funds to a prospector on a fifty-fifty basis for whatever discovery he might find, has largely disappeared. Its place, to some degree, has been taken by the small syndicate of venturesome members who band together for furnishing funds to a group of prospectors for the same general purposes. Such a syndicate has a definite organization and is usually assured of sufficient initial funds, or flow of funds, to carry on work for several years. It is usually headed by an engineer-promoter or an entrepreneur trader who has had considerable field experience as well as personal knowledge of his prospecting crews. For the owner of a potential mining property who has ample capital, the problem is to determine (1) justification for the necessary investment in exploration and development, and (2) the economics of the enterprise as to size and degree of integration of the ha1 operating entity. If the owner of such a property has little or no capital, he also faces these same basic problems but, in addition, must be able to present the findings of fact and persuade the prospective investor that the enterprise will produce

Short Mountain Silica mines the Clinch Formation, an orthoquartzite, for silica sand. The operation is located near Mooresburg, TN, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Knoxville. Short Mountain is a local geographic name given to an area of resistant sandstone (Fig. 1). The area is part of the Clinch Mountain system that extends from eastern Tennessee to southwestern Virginia. The thick sandstone unit is more technically called a quartz arenite (orthoquartzite) that forms most of the mountain. In 1980, a Knoxville resident brought the Clinch Formation - Short Mountain in particular - to the attention of the large silica-sand producers as a potential silica-sand mine. Working with a local contractor who owned several hundred acres on Short Mountain, the Knoxville resident contacted interested companies. Many silica companies reviewed the property including Ottawa Silica Co., Pennsylvania Glass Sand Co. (both now US Silica Co.),Unimin Corp.,The Morie Co. and others. AFG Industries was the main market for the glass sand product from this potential mine. It had two plants, both within trucking distance from the site. All the silica sand producing companies, however, declined to develop the site. A few years later, Unimin Corp. decided to drill and evaluate the deposit. From that evaluation, Unimin leased the property but later dropped it. The relatively limited market for the Short Mountain product as well as Unimin’s recent acquisition of Carolina Silica were reportedly instrumental in the company’s decision to let go of the lease. Several other companies-unrelated to the silica sand industry - looked at the site but no one was interested in developing it. In 1986, J.D. Nicewonder, owner of coal mines in Virginia and Kentucky, was approached to investigate the site. Nicewonder began to develop the site with the intent to produce glass sand to supply AFG Industries. In May 1988, the first shipment of sand was trucked to AFG Industries.

DURING an investigation to determine the compatibility of several metals with tungsten, the degree of reaction between tungsten and lead was determined. A literature survey showed considerable disagreement between the results of various earlier investigators. Information presented by M. Hansen1 states that, according to S. Inouye,2 tungsten has very poor resistance against attack by molten lead, even at the low temperature near the melting point of lead. A phase diagram in the same reference indicates a solubility of 30 wt pct W in molten lead at 1300°C. Contrary evidence was shown by Parkman and shepard3 in their investigation of materials for use in heat transfer systems containing liquid lead alloys; they performed experiments at 980°C for times up to 50 hr without noticing any appreciable attack on the tungsten. Tungsten sheet was immersed in molten lead contained in Vycor tubes evacuated to at least 10-4 mm Hg. R. Bernard4 and R. I. Jaffee5 also indicate that no reaction occurs between molten lead and tungsten. However, no experimental data were included in these reports. In order to settle the question of the solubility of tungsten in molten lead, tungsten powder with an average Fisher subsieve particle size of 6µ was pressed in a double-acting die at 6 tsi to small compacts. They were then sintered in an atmosphere of hydrogen for 2 hr at 1700°C, resulting in a sintered density of 64 pct of theoretical with final dimensions of 0.260 in. in height and 0.245 in. in diameter. For all tests, the tungsten pellets were immersed in molten lead. Table I is a summary of the experimental procedures showing atmospheres, temperatures, and times. The first experiments were performed at 650°C; at this temperature, the liquid lead should wet the porous tungsten better than at its melting point, and penetrate into the pores. The lead was heated in a graphite crucible with a graphite cover. No protective atmosphere was used, as it was expected that the formation of CO would be sufficient to prevent oxidation. This, however, proved to be wrong, and all tungsten samples showed a slight oxide film after treatment. The tungsten samples were immersed in the molten lead for times of 5 min, 10 min, 1/2 hr, 1 hr, and 2 hr. After this time, the melt was poured into a form and the
