"The present work investigated the influence of Fe+2 initial concentrations in the bioleaching of copper from printed circuit board using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR. Printed circuit boards were collected from obsolete computers and mechanically processed through size reduction followed by magnetic separation. The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR were grown and adapted in presence of printed circuit boards. A shake flask study was carried out on the printed circuit boards samples (non-magnetic fraction) using a rotary shaker under the following fixed conditions (185 rpm, 30°C). The bioleaching efficiency was evaluated by comparison between the concentration in the initial sample and in the leached liquor, pH of the medium and concentration of ferrous iron produced. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (1CP-OES) was used to determine the metals concentration. The results showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR leached 63% copper from printed circuit boards using supplemented medium with Fe+2.IntroductionThe waste of electric and electronic equipment is generated by discarding of equipment such as obsolete computers and cell phones which is stimulated by the technology innovations and it has been growing each year. Because of the amount that has been accumulated it has become a prominent environmental problem but also can be a source of valuable materials, such precious and base metals [1,2] The printed circuit boards are found in almost all electric and electronic equipment being composed of polymers, ceramics and metals and can be an alternative source to recover base and precious metals. The precious metals are used in the printed circuit boards to protect against oxidation and base metals because of its conducting properties [3]. The heterogeneous composition of printed circuit board is a limiting factor in the recycling processes and the metals concentrations also range."

SOME days ago a visiting member from Pittsburgh who is an ardent supporter of the Institute remarked: "There are a lot of men who would be members of the Institute if it weren't so expensive. It is not so much the $15 dues as the $20 initiation fee. This makes quite a hurdle, especially for the younger fellows." A little further conversation developed the fact that the member had never learned of the changes in the By-laws regarding initiation fees and dues made by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors last November. As a great many others doubtless are unaware of these changes, the substance of two of the amendments is here repeated. They provide: (1) That the initiation fee for Junior Members (heretofore ten dollars) he abolished. (2) That the age limit for entrance as a Junior Member be increased from 27 years to 33; provided further, that the period during which the dues of a Junior Member are ten dollars shall be a maximum of six years but in no event shall extend beyond his thirty-third birthday. The Junior Member gets the identical privileges enjoyed by his seniors and he likewise assumes the same obligations with the sole exception of the financial payments. This one exception is justified by the fact that the engineers of more mature years, who are established in the profession, - are able and willing to assume a slightly greater financial burden. In effect, it is a small subsidy for the younger men; but these in turn will later enter the group of those that give instead of receive assistance. The practical result is that an engineer under 27 can obtain every privilege and benefit of membership for six years on the payment of only $10 per year without any initiation fee. A man of thirty can do the same for a period of three years. Incidentally, a candidate applying for membership (either as senior or junior) in the next few months need pay dues for the second half of 1935 only. A Junior Member -can be enrolled with an immediate outlay of only $5. The Institute does not seek-members indiscriminately merely to swell the number. These facts are not presented as a "bargain" offer in any sense. The standards for admission are high and are watched zealously. But it frankly-wants to give qualified men who can benefit from membership every encouragement to apply. Naturally, the Institute does not want lack of accurate information regarding initiation fees and -dues to be a stumbling block to any that are eligible and desirous of enrolling. Members are urged to take it upon themselves to clear up misapprehensions on this point, particularly among younger engineers.-Editorial reprinted from MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1935.

The latter method corresponds with the direct effect. of low and high finishing-temperatures ; that is, a plus difference indicates low, and a minus difference high, finishing-temperature. I make this explanation to prevent confusion in comparing the two papers. Mr. Sauveur has shown that there is a close relation between the size of the grain and the ultimate strength, and also that the size of the grain depends on the temperature at which the material is finished in rolling, and on the chemical composition of the steel. "In 1992, Ingeniería de Minerales started with the introduction of pneumatic flotation technology in Chile and South America. This technology consists of vertical cells and gyratory cells, used mainly under actual operational conditions, with pilot units directly installed in the concentrator circuits of the industrial process. Successful industrial applications have been observed at Los Pelambres, in the molybdenum plant; at Codelco Andina in the molybdenum plant as pre-rougher to produce directly a final concentrate; in the copper circuit at Las Luces as pre-rougher producing final concentrate using sea water; at Minera Valle Aconcagua where a full automatic plant produces pre-concentrate from fresh tailings as feed; at the silica and silicate reverse flotation circuit of Compañía Minera del Pacífico; in cleaning the final concentrate of Zn by reverse flotation removing ultrafine carbonate; and in a plant that reprocesses fresh tailings from a copper slag flotation process. Positive operational changes in the design of the flotation circuit have been seen in plants using G-cells and V-cells, improving the performance of flotation circuits and the quality of final products. The high concentration of bubbles and micro turbulence produced by the pneumatic aeration units provide a high probability of collision and attachment, reducing dramatically the residence time. Though it is a pneumatic flotation, no compressed air is needed, and the equipment is characterized by low maintenance costs, full automation, savings in investment and energy."

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

"Owing to the corrosiveness of the untreated brackish cooling water typically used for steel mills (and other environments), it is important to treat the water and monitor corrosion in such systems. Generally, corrosion rates are monitored with corrosion probes inserted into a pipeline or vessel. This has been standard practice for many years, and is widely accepted in industry. Typically, two kinds of probes are used - electrical resistance and linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes.In this study, the effectiveness and accuracy of the LPR technique was evaluated by comparing the electrochemical measurements with the results of mass loss tests using corrosion coupons. The corrosivity of the environment, a synthetic brackish water, was varied by varying the calcium hardness and alkalinity, and to simulate actual plant conditions temperatures of 35°C and 45°C were used. In addition to the corrosion rate measurements, the iron concentration was measured, as well as the imbalance from the probe.The corrosion rates obtained by LPR were from 57% lower to 385%higher than those from the immersion tests. Most probe measurements were higher than the immersion results, and 50% of the probe results were50% or more higher than the immersion results. The best correspondence between the two methods was obtained at low calcium levels, except for one measurement that was 93% higher than the coupon results. There was no clear correlation between parameters such as temperature and total alkalinity and the difference between the results. It would therefore appear that LPR measurements can differ significantly from immersion results, and LPR results should therefore be used with caution in industrial applications."

Farce Mining of Texas is a surface coal mine located in Laredo, Texas. Farce mines and sells approximately 600,000 tons /year of bituminous coal. A map showing the location of Laredo is provided in Figure 1. As shown, Laredo is located on the border between the United States and Mexico. The mine property runs to the Rio Grande River, the border between the two countries. Farce pumps water from the Rio Grande for use in their coal preparation plant. Laredo’s climate is quite dry with annual rainfall averaging about 12” per year. Also, due to the southern location, Laredo is quite hot. It is common for the temperature to reach 100” F in March and maintain these temperatures through September.

Optimising drill performance has always been a primary goal of drilling and blasting managers. Improving drilling rates and utilisation will ultimately drive the cost per foot or metre downward. Additionally, more consistent production will ensure shovel or dragline performance goals are met and the chances of machine idle time is minimised. Over the past 20 years, many studies have examined rotary drilling factors and performance issues. In most cases a common theory points to energy input versus drilling output. Indexes such as specific energy and total work energy have been -developed to quantify the drilling process. As general engineering principles dictate, energy is required to drill rock by overcoming compressive and shear strengths. Concurrently, the greater the energy input, the faster the penetration output. Therefore, by examining the basic drilling energy parameters, optimisation is possible. The principles of rotary drilling are driven by five factors. When optimised individually and as a system, drill performance will improve. Most recent studies all agree that a performance relationship exists between bit load, bit rotation, and hole flushing. Additionally, proper bit selection and most of all, the operator, can have a tremendous effect on drill productivity. By analysing these factors and establishing the best case scenario, an overall drilling system can be engineered to match the mining characteristics. Furthermore, by balancing these factors, a lower cost will be achieved through increased production rates, maintenance costs, and effective drill utilisation.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE superficial alteration of ore-deposits is a recognized principle of geology, in the same way as is the superficial alteration of any of the common rocks. Its importance in some classes of ore-deposits is also well understood, as in many precious-metal deposits; while in other classes, its importance has been proved in individual cases, as in the Lake Superior iron-deposits. The causes and effects of superficial alteration in many classes of deposits, however, are not so generally understood; and it is the object of the present paper to show that such changes almost invariably give rise to exceedingly important chemical and physical phenomena, while in many deposits, the question as to whether they can or cannot be profitably worked depends largely on the extent and character of this alteration. The various treatises on ore-deposits published in the United States and Europe make frequent mention of superficial alteration, but have not treated the subject fully. As early as 1554, however, before which time but little accurate information was had on the geologic nature of ore-deposits, Prof. J. D. Whitney in his classic volume, The Metallic Wealth of the United States, describes the alteration-products, or gossans, in certain deposits and mentions others. On the more purely chemical side of the question, the work of Bischof, Daubrée, Roth, Rose, Hunt, Breithaupt, Blum, Julien, Deville, Debray, Volger, Moissan, Fremy, Lévy, Fouqué, and others has afforded much valuable information and many useful suggestions. "During metallurgical processing of non-ferrous metals, smelting residue (inc. smelter slag, flue gas and so on) is inevitably generated as secondary product.In this research, some experimental feasibilities were investigated to recover/remove Cu and As from the residue. Primarily, the removal of As and volatilized materials from the residue was examined by pyrometallurgical treatment (dry-process). In the second stage after treating the residue with a dry-process, leaching and solvent extraction as hydrometallurgical treatments (wet-process) were also investigated by using H2SO4 solution as a two stage leaching treatment, to dissolve various metals from the leach residue. Then, solvent extraction was examined by using LIX-84I as an extractant to recover and separate Cu from impurities from the final (2nd) leached solution. For the leaching stages, the removal of 90 % As and the leaching rate of 85 % Cu could be achieved by 0.25 mol/l and 1.0 mol/l H2SO4 solution, respectively. On the other hand, the extraction of over 90 % Cu and stripping was carried out by solvent extraction. 1. The smelting residue includes some useful metals and undesired toxic materials; Cu, Pb, Ca and As, etc.In Japan there is one undisclosed place stockpiled with 10,000 ton of smelting residue from abandoned smelters about 25 years ago. Therefore it is necessary to reduce the residual amount for space and environmental protection including water treatment by separating and removing toxic materials."

Short Historical Review Tunnelling in Germany is as old as it is in other industrial countries. Until the middle of this century German contractors had no chance to work continuously in this business except if they were operating internationally. Since 1960, however, tunnelling has been a growing market domestically. The reasons for this growth have been both in the growing demand of traffic routes and also in an increasing environmental consciousness, which tries to transfer any cause of disturbance underground. Tunnelling engineers of course don't complain about this trend. As almost every German city is built upon water-bearing soft ground, shields have been used soon after they were first successfully utilized in Great Britain and the United States. Until the seventies lining systems for shield tunnels were predominantly either cast iron segments or concrete segments for primary support combined with different sealing systems and a secondary concrete lining cast-in-place. Steel ribs and timber lagging for primary support has not been utilized in Germany, since the owners don't accept timber to be left in the ground. In 1973, for the first time, permanent linings were constructed with watertight segment rings of precast concrete (Fig. 1). This lining was developed as an economical solution for use with slurry shields in noncohesive, water-bearing soils that required an immediately watertight lining. At the Vale Inco Ontario Operations, the working environment is rapidly evolving with organizational changes, new business systems and software tools. These changes are required in order to meet today?s challenging business environment. Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

"The paper refers to methods and concepts used in the computer treatment of banks of geophysical, geochemical and geological data, relating to the exploration of massive sulphides. In particular, a data bank of 400 drill holes on independent conductors can be used to calculate probability levels of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides according to the characteristics of the conductor. Inversely one can, using the data bank and some cost assumptions, simulate and optimize the cost of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides by selecting drill targets among conductors according to conductivity, magnetism or gravity. Problems of noise, inherent in any simulation, are illustrated in this paper by the results of a study of the nomenclature of volcanic rocks of 27 drill holes by forty geologists. Compilations of data banks are long and timeconsuming, and it would help to standardize to allow exchange of data. We believe that such efforts may result in the discovery of more mineral deposits and at a lower cost. The present study is supported jointly by SOQUEM The New Jersey Zinc Co. and Cominco Ltd."

Results of the two main drilling operations on hydrothermal fields demonstrate that the two dimensional submersible operations need to be followed by drilling expeditions to study the third dimension of hydrothermal systems and understand hydrothermal and ore forming processes. Two types of environments were drilled recently in basaltic environment on slow spreading ridge, and on a sedimented ridge. Similar work has still to be done and targets to be discussed in other environments such as back-arc basins for felsic rocks environments and slow spreading ridges for ultramafic rock environments.

This report describes the geology and reviews the oil-production history of the Dutcher sands of Pennsylvania age in the Muskogee oilfield. The geology and production history are presented not alone as a review of the past behavior of the field but also to interpret the possibilities for future production of oil from semidepleted sands in this and similar areas. The Muskogee field, one of the oldest oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, yields paraffin-base oil of 40° API gravity -a gravity higher than that of most Oklahoma oils. Oil was discovered in the townsite of Muskogee in 1894 but was not produced in commercial quantities until 1904. A peak yearly rate of 1,340,000 barrels of oil was attained in 1910 (see table 1).

IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. Most of the geological data appearing in the technical press are based on "careful observations" made from an auto stage and a casual glance through the U. S. Geological Survey Bulletins, No. 340 of 1908 or No. 397 of 1909, both by F. C. Schrader. Mr. Schrader's report is still the best publication on the district. A really careful study of this report will uncover only a very few statements which have since proven questionable. This is a remarkable record when it is considered that only a short time was spent by Mr. Schrader in the field and that there was very little development work done at that time. The mining world and especially Mohave County, Ariz., will feel a sense of gratitude to Mr. Schrader for revising his early report. on this

Mining of the Agnew nickel deposit commenced in 1970 using a variety of underground mining methods, though with mixed success due to the difficult ground conditions. WMC Resources Ltd acquired the operation in 1989, and commenced nickel production with an open pit. In 1995 all production reverted to the rejuvenated underground mine, using exclusively SLC (sublevel caving) methods. Currently the mine produces 1.4 Mt per annum, at an average grade of 1.74 per cent Ni. Underground mining of the Perseverance orebody has always presented significant challenges due to the difficult ground conditions in the weak and altered ultramafic rocks. The range of problems include areas of swelling minerals, intense and extremely weak shear zones, relatively high in situ stress, and in other areas very brittle rocks. Under these conditions rock mechanics input has been and remains a critical element of the mining strategy. Severe ground behaviour difficulties down to a depth of 500 m below surface prompted a review of the mining strategy for the large disseminated nickel orebody, including evaluation of alternative mining methods. However, sublevel caving was ultimately selected as the preferred method, and a re-design of the SLC cross-cut layout followed. A selection of rock mechanics investigations of interest are described, including complex virgin stress measurements, detailed ground behaviour monitoring, and the use of non-linear stress analyses to re-design the mine layout. Subsequent ground behaviour, support design and production scheduling are also described.

Equilibria involving Cu-Pt alloys, copper oxides, and atmospheres of known ox2gen pressures have been determined at 1000' and 1200 C. The data obtained have been used to calculate activity-composition relations in the alloys. A moderate negative deviation from ideality is found. At high copper concentrations, the results of the present study are in good agreement with those of previous investigators, whereas at low copper concentrations the activities obtained in this investigation are slightly higher than those reported previously. The present study is part of a research program dealing with the determination of phase relations and thermodynamic properties of copper-containing systems at high temperatures. The information available for such systems is very scanty, particularly for copper oxides and their combinations with other oxide components. Platinum is commonly used as a container in studies of oxide equilibria. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of reaction between the oxide and the container, a knowledge of activity-composition relations in Cu-Pt alloys is necessary. Such data are not available for Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range of particular interest in the present research program, and particularly for alloys low in copper. Studies of various aspects of the systems Cu-Pt and Cu-0 have been reported in previous literature. The system Cu-Pt is known1 to form a continuous solid-solution series above 812.C, whereas ordered phases are present in certain composition ranges at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic data for the system have been reviewed by Hultgren et al.,' who presented free energies of mixing at 65Oo C, mainly derived from electromotive force cell measurements by Weibke and Matthes.3 Enthalpies of mixing at 640°C have been obtained by Oriani and Murphy4 with liquid tin calorime-try. Their results differ considerably from those derived from the temperature dependence of the data of Weibke and Matthes. Thermodynamic data for the disordered alloys have been obtained by Assayag,5 and more recently by Schmahl and Minzl,6 by Myles and Darby,7 and by McCormack, Myers, and Saxer.8 The two latter sets of data7'' became available after the present study was completed. In the system Cu-0+ two oxides are stable at high temperatures, CuO and CuzO+ each having only minor deviations from stoichiometry. Equilibria in the liquidus temperature region of the system Cu2O-CuO have been studied by Roberts and systemsmyth,9'10CuzO-CuO by Vogel and ocher,I1 by Osterwald,12 and recently the the present authors.13 The system is of the eutectic type with a eutectic temperature of 1083.C The composition of the eutectic liquid corresponds to Xcu0 = °.44, and the oxygen pressure of the coexisting gas phase is Po2 = 0.55 atm.13 Equilibrium oxygen pressures for coexistence of solid CuO and solid Cu2O have been determined by Schmahl and Muller,l4 by Gadalla, Ford, and white,l5 by Bidwell,16 and recently by the present authors.13 There is reasonably good agreement among the various sets of data. Free energies of formation of Cu2O(s) from the elements have been derived by Tretyakov,17 by Bidwell,16 by Kiukkola and wagner,18 by Pal'guev and Neuimin," and by Steele and Alcock,20 There is particularly good agreement among the latter three1'-20 sets of data.
