This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the documentation for COALVAL, a coal property evaluation software package developed on Lotus 1-2-3,4 version 2.2, spreadsheets. The software is compatible with version 3.1 as well, and may provisionally be run on the earlier 2.01 version. COALVAL is a menu-driven program that produces a prefeasibility-level cost analysis of mine-planned coal resources. The package contains cost models for each of five coal mining methods commonly employed in Appalachia: auger, contour strip, mountain top removal, continuous miner, and longwall. Other models, such as a dragline cost model, will be incorporated as the Bureau's Coal Recoverability Program matures. COALVAL allows mine operators, evaluators, consultants, and Government entities to input resource data and the various production, operating, and cost variables that pertain to their property. The program can evaluate up to 25 seams, each to be mined with up to five different mining methods, within a given area. Summary spreadsheets listing the cost per clean ton to mine the resources, f.o.b. the tipple, are produced for each property, seam, and mining method/seam combination.

Chelating resins can be used to recover important metals from different sources, and it is important to understand which resin is most suitable for each metal [1]. This review  benefits the mining industry because chelating resins can be used to recover metals from low-grade ores and mining tailings, increasing the industrial process efficiency [2–4]. Furthermore, the use of chelating resins in mining processes and mining tailings has the common problem of metals contamination, with iron being the main contaminant in low-grade ores and tailings. Understanding how contaminants decrease ion exchange efficiency is significant for industries [5

In this study, the effect of different regrinding conditions on the depression of fine pyrite at the cleaner stage was investigated. The regrinding condition was manipulated by different grinding media (stainless steel and mild steel). It was found that, after regrinding with mild steel grinding media, the flotation recovery of pyrite is much lower than with stainless steel grinding media, and it is more difficult to restore by adding more collector. This means, regrinding with mild steel grinding media may depress the pyrite flotation more strongly. The copper activation of pyrite during regrinding was also studied. It was found, that the mild steel grinding media is more beneficial to copper activation than stainless steel media. Additionally, the analysis of pyrite recovery based on the particle size indicated, that the fine particles are more susceptible to different grinding environments than intermediate and coarse particles and therefore are more easily depressed with a much lower flotation recovery.

ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

Self-potential methods are based ?on measurements on the surface of voltage distributions caused by natural sub-surface oxidation phenomena. The attempt is made to. correlate voltage minima or maxima with the location of mineral materials or geological conditions which may give rise to such naturally produced spontaneous potentials. Any orebody undergoing oxidation is a source of electric current. Ground waters carrying free oxygen attack the upper surface of the body, rendering this the positive pole of a galvanic cell, with the lower portion of the body the negative pole and the surrounding weak acidic waters the electrolyte. Current flow is from positive to negative through the orebody and negative to positive through the electrolyte, i.e., through the surrounding rock. The upper end of a steeply dipping, tabular orebody is hence indicated as lying below the point on the surface where the largest negative potential is observed(l). From its basis, it is apparent that the self-potential method was developed primarily for ore exploration.

"The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. More detailed results can be found in the papers already mentioned."

When electric current of any appreciable magnitude flows from a power line into the earth, a change sometimes takes place in the conditions of resistivity immediately surrounding the electrode or medium of contact. If the conducting medium is composed of moist earth or clay the effect is to increase rapidly the resistance. If the conducting medium is coal or a coal bed, the effect is one of slowly decreasing resistance as the coal is carbonized, If, however, the flow of current is not enough to carbonize the coal, it will dry slowly, with a resultant increase in resistance. Measuring ground resistance, or impedance, with conventional commercial ground testers does not always indicate the current that will flow in the earth circuit from a direct-current or an alternating-current power circuit. The exact reason for this has not been determined however, it is thought to be due to the comparatively minute currents used for such testing. A typical ground, tester used by the authors for this work indicated a maximum current of 25 milli-amperes. The frequency of this testing current also has an effect on the readings in all probability. While the possibilities of the effects of varying frequencies has by no means been fully explored in this investigation, there are very definite indications that the impedance of a circuit through a section of earth will vary in some inverse relationship to the frequency of the applied voltages. This is evident at ordinary power-line frequencies ns well as at higher frequencies up to 200 kilocycles, which was the highest frequency available for tests in this investigation. This report is written in the hope that it will stimulate further investigation of the possibilities suggested for communication and the development of safety devices for increased electrical safety in coal mining.

For a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of. such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the re-crystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would he of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth4 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 65s°C. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutec-tic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653'C. Preparation and Chemical Analysis oP Alloys Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity alumi-num-iron alloy (11.45 Pet iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The aIlalyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). Canadian newspapers from coast to coast, have been, for months, denouncing those articles entitled, "The Whisper of Death," which have been appearing in the Montreal Star. I have not read these articles as the newspapers do not print them; they just denounce them or class them as jokes. Apparently they think that they are not suitable for the ordinary Canadian to read. It appears, however, that the Star has said that unless we balance our budget, and that soon, we shall be bankrupt. That seems to me like common sense, though the Victoria Times says editorially that the Star claims will "shortly find a place in the joke column". In this editorial the Times quotes with much enthusiasm from the Quebec Telegraph. "Canada," says the Telegraph, "is all right. Her natural resources are so vast that no one need worry. Her future possibilities are limitless; her assets beyond figures". Does it not seem like the limit of nonsense for a country that is not paying its running expenses to make such pretensions? After fifty-five years of Confederation and much talk of national status we are still sponging on the mother country for our external defense; we still allow the hard pressed tax-payer in the old land to shoulder the entire burden. We even now refuse to accept able-bodied working-men from that small and overcrowded country and yet blatently talk of limitless resources.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

Literature provides only limited information regarding the behaviour of laterally loaded piles socketed into weak rock masses. A laboratory program, comprising a number of tests of scaled models of the pile/rock mass system has been conducted. A synthetic rock, known as Johnstone was used to simulate a naturally weathered and fractured siltstone. The load-deflection behaviour of the test piles was measured, and strain gauges were fixed to the model piles to assess the bending moments. The laboratory results are compared with the results from several theoretical models, some of which are in the form of commercial software packages. This study highlights the inadequacy of existing methods to adequately model the influence of rock joint orientation in geotechnical design. Additionally, numerical modelling of the pile/rock mass system was carried out using the discrete element program UDEC. The importance in modelling the system using discontinuum mechanics is highlighted, particularly to capture the anisotropy of the rock mass.

DURING the last winter we have been actively engaged in the School of Mines in search for boracic acid. This has been owing to the fact that Mr. M. W. Iles, assistant in the qualitative laboratory, has discovered a test for that substance which makes its discovery exceedingly simple instead of being, as previously, very difficult. It consists in powdering the mineral, calcining it, then moistening it with sulphuric acid, and heating on a platinum wire until the sulphuric acid is expelled. It is then moistened with glycerin and made to take fire. If boracic acid is present it infallibly gives a green flame. It is not at all surprising, under such circumstances, the test being so easy, that boracic acid has been found by the students in a great many cases where its presence was not previously suspected, and in some where its detection was previously too difficult to warrant looking for it. We were not prepared, however, for its discovery in Lake Superior iron ores, and were disposed at first to think that a mistake had been made. INTRODUCTION The history of coal mining the Ostrava Region of the Czech Republic goes back nearly 250 years. Both coking coal for steelmaking and thermal coal for the production of energy are mined here; however, it was the coking capabilities that subsequently turned the region into a major steel-producing area in the early 1800?s, something that continues to this day. Ostrava lies in the northeast corner of the Czech Republic, near the southern border of Poland, and falls within the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The region contains over 400 seams of coal of which about 150 have been mined over its history and continue to be mined. Eighty percent of the Upper Silesian coalfieldlies in Poland and is presently mined by about 35 coal mines; the remaining 20% falls in the Czech Republic, which presently has four mines operated by OKD, a.s., a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based New World Resources. Traditionally, all the mines in this region have employed the longwall method of mining, of which subsidence is an unavoidable consequence. In fact, due to the long history of longwall mining here, there are areas where the overall subsidence has exceeded 37 meters (121 feet). The region is fairly densely populated with residences and industry, and a considerable amount of coal lies under some of these areas where subsidence is not allowed or has to be minimized. It is this reason that has driven OKD to consider alternate methods of mining that will not create subsidence. The decision was made to consider the room and pillar method of mining in order to leave stable pillars of coal to support the surface. After considering several locations, OKD chose the shaft safety pillar at the CSM mine as a test mining location. To say the least, this is a very challenging location in which to conduct a test. As with the entire region, there are many faults from tectonic activity, the seams are pitching at 12 to 20 degrees, the area is affected by high horizontal stress, and the depth of 750 to 900 meters is perhaps the deepest room and pillar coal mining ever attempted.

MEASUREMENTS of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for com-prehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be, illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as ele-mentary form as possible. A description of calibration methods con-stitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 2 will be used in equations throughout the paper.
