Aggregates production is a huge global industry which uses an enormous amount of energy and produces a massive amount of unsalable fines. Reducing the amount of energy used per tonne of product and/or the amount of fines produced, would make a quarry more efficient. This reduction would make the quarry more environmentally friendly and profitable. This research looks at modelling Mountsorrel Quarry, a granite quarry in the United Kingdom (UK), using JKSimMet and Split-Desktop software packages in conjunction with the European Union (EU) project, EE-Quarry. Samples submitted to drop weight tests confirmed Mountsorrel Quarry granite as an extremely hard granite. Rock fracture data (t10) and energy of comminution (ECS) data were obtained from analysing the results. Split-Desktop image analysis software was utilized to determine the particle size distribution (PSD) of the primary crusher feed, as it contains particles too large to screen manually. It was also found that <1% of the feed is fines, which at Mountsorrel Quarry are classed as particles smaller than 5 mm, and that no particles were larger than 3,810 mm. JKSimMet was used to create a flowsheet of Mountsorrel Quarry. The crusher product PSDs were simulated and found to have strong correlations with experimental data, calculated by screening samples from conveyor belts, especially in the fines region, with a mean difference of 1%. The simulated primary crusher product PSD showed that it contains ~6% fines. A simulation over the entire quarry showed the product to be within the size range produced at Mountsorrel Quarry, and with a simulated fines content of 13%. When the CSS on the primary crusher was altered from 165.1 mm (the operating size on site) to 100.0 mm, it increased the overall percentage of fines produced by 3%, increased the power draw by 140.6 kW, but reduced the overall plant production percentage of fines by 2%. Two blasts were analysed on adjacent rock faces. They had identical blast designs, but the order of deck detonation varied; the first blast detonated the bottom deck before the top and vice versa in the second blast. For each blast, measurements of the feed PSD to the primary crusher, the number of particles that required secondary breakage on the quarry floor, acoustic levels and vibration readings were measured. No significant difference was identified between the two blasts in any of the parameters measured. In conclusion, a working model of Mountsorrel Quarry has been made in JKSimMet that has been validated against data from site and Split-Desktop has been used to simulate the primary crusher feed PSD, something that was previously unknown. The effect of reversing the order of deck detonation in a two deck blast was also analysed but with no significant difference between the two blasts found.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Mining has been typified of late as a boom and bust, cyclical industry operating against a steady decline in the size and quality of mineral deposits. Decreasing deposit grades and increasing costs of traditional mining techniques, all in the face of another commodity downturn, are forcing mining companies more than ever before to seek out new and innovative ways to operate. New technologies are emerging to model, control and track resources through the mining value chain, to move material about mines more efficiently, and to identify and separate ore from gangue early in the extraction process.Discovering such technologies however is only the first challenge for mining companies. Actually implementing technological change successfully has proved to be an even bigger challenge. Like for many industries, fulfilling the promised benefits for the expense and timing envisioned, has not been easy when innovative technologies are introduced.Citing the author’s insights and experiences in a number of emerging technologies, this paper explores barriers to implementing technological change in the mining context. Key elements of a change management framework, first developed for implementing mine management systems, are described to give mining executives insight into how they and their organisations can succeed through technology-driven change.CITATION:McCarthy, B, 2016. Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.

Introduction An examination of statistics for the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals that there is an increasing tendency for fertilizer-manufacturing activity to concentrate in the areas of phosphate-rock mining. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping a more valuable finished fertilizer product will always, as long as cost considerations control the decision, be resolved in favor of the latter. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer-manufacturing capacity, which is oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock, shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry&apos;s location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent are these changes. These questions are the subject of this investigation. Recent trends in world phosphate trade Since 1980, the changing pattern of world trade in phosphate materials reflects an increased interest in manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in rock-producing areas. This is shown by the decline in the total tonnage of phosphate rock being traded worldwide compared to world consumption of phosphate fertilizers (Fig. 1). This relative decline has continued since 1984, which is a longer period of time than could be explained by temporary cyclical market factors. Other evidence corroborates this conclusion. The world&apos;s phosphate-rock production is relatively concentrated geographically. In 1992, the top ten producing countries accounted for 92% of world production. Figure 2 shows that the share of world fertilizer production in the top ten rock producers has increased. Yet, further evidence of the direction of trade changes can be had by looking at the pattern of the world&apos;s sulfur trade. The first step in the manufacture of any of the widely used phosphate fertilizer products is the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. In most instances, phosphate fertilizer producers have found it economical to produce their own sulfuric acid by burning elemental sulfur, and such operations account for over 60% of all sulfur consumption in the world. 1 Therefore, a concentration of phosphate fertilizer production in rock-producing countries should produce a similar concentration of sulfur imports in the same countries. Figure 3 suggests that there has been a tendency since 1989 for sulfur exports to go increasingly to the rockproducing countries. World phosphate-location strategy is not limited to the alternatives of shipping rock and shipping finished fertilizers. A third alternative consists of producing phosphoric acid, the principal phosphate fertilizer intermediate, at the rock deposit, and then exporting it to market-oriented ammonium phosphate plants. This arrangement offers the importing country the advantages of shipping a more concentrated product while retaining the economic multiplier benefits of a domestic high-analysis fertilizer industry. India, and several other countries, imports merchant-grade phosphoric acid to use as input for the domestic value-added fertilizer industries. For various reasons, the trade in phosphoric acid has never quite lived up to the promise suggested by the foregoing discussion. Figure 4 shows no growth in this trade in the last ten years, either in absolute terms or in relation to the world&apos;s consumption of phosphoric acid. Most of the decline in the trade in phosphorous in rock form has been replaced with trade in finished fertilizers. The trade in superphosphoric acid was a growth activity in the late 1970s with the growth in US exports to the USSR, and this trade survived the Carter-era embargoes of US-Soviet trade. However, no additional sizable markets for superphosphoric acid developed, and other suppliers sought out the Soviet market. The problem with superphosphoric acid is that the cost of its incremental concentration is as great as the savings from shipping the more concentrated product. The Soviet market was a special case. The political breakup of the Soviet Union disrupted the superphosphoric acid trade after 1991 and led to a shutdown of the US export capacity.

In the complex interaction between human activities and the environment, waste is proved to be one of the most environment-degrading products.In 1972 the European Commission introduced measures on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2006, directive 2006/12/EC (European Commission) on waste was issued. It covers the scope of minimizing the waste, prevent hazardous waste, maximize reclamation, reuse, recycling and energy-recovery.No specific directive refers to management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. However, in 1992 the European Commission listed debris among waste management priorities because of its growing amount.Only recently, effective environmental policies have been implemented in Italy, even though relevant environmental issues started rising as early as the beginning of the 1970s. A wide range of different cablebolt systems are available and in use in hard rock and coal mines around the world. The birdcaged cablebolt was initially used in UK coal mines in conjunction with rockbolts in the late 1980&apos;s. More recently other cablebolt configurations have been used. Innovations in cablebolt design in the UK have been driven by a demand to find a system as effective as the birdcaged cable, but which can be installed more rapidly and offer immediate support. A laboratory short encapsulation pull test (LSEPT) has been developed for both rockbolt and tendon systems which measures bond strength and stiffness in rock and assesses the full range of potential failure modes. This test is now used along with conventional &apos;gun barrel&apos; and shear tests to provide full assessment of bolt and tendon performance. This test may be incorporated into a new performance based British Standard for rockbolts and long tendon systems. This paper describes the performance of some of these systems as being applied to UK and South African coal mines.

This paper looks at four critical lubricants used in the conveyor systems of the northern Albertan oil sand facility. The requirements for the lubricants used in the electric motors and gear boxes of the drive systems, the pulley bearing and the idler bearings are discussed in terms of the applications and the environment. A number of developments that have occurred in recent years are presented. Data from the field and from custom designed testing in the laboratory are used to support the role of simulation testing in problem solving in this area of technology.

In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey&apos;s results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:&apos; provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.

THE influence of cobalt and nickel on the properties of steel might be readily expected to be very similar. The two elements occupy close and somewhat unusual positions in the periodic table, their chemical behavior and compounds are so completely analogous and their various physical properties, including the ferro-magnetic characteristic, show such a remarkable correspondence, that there is no doubt of a strong resemblance existing between these two metals. However, the variety of, properties that are obtained from steel is due, largely to the fact that the element iron possesses allotropic forms. Alloying elements that affect these allotropic forms, or alter the nature of the allotropic changes, exert a profound influence on the resulting steel. In the case of nickel and cobalt, although these elements are very similar chemically and physically, it is found that they differ distinctly in their individual effects on the critical points of iron. Both nickel and cobalt form a series of homogeneous solid solutions with iron at temperatures above 1800° F. The difference in their behavior does not occur until changes begin to take place in the solid state below this temperature. An inspection of the respective thermal equilibrium diagrams at the lower temperatures makes the opposite effects of nickel and cobalt clearly evident.

In this paper, the results emerging from the several basic and applied studies performed to provide fundamental understanding of the interplay between clay pulp chemistry, orthokinetic flocculation performance, particle interactions, applied shear and dewaterability of fine clay mineral dispersions are presented, reconciled, and discussed. Modification of pulp chemistry and behaviour was achieved by using kaolinite and Na-exchanged (swelling) smectite clay minerals, divalent metal ions (Ca(II), Mn(II)) as coagulants and high molecular weight, anionic polyacrylamide copolymers: carboxylate substituted (PAM A) and 2-amido 2-methyl propane sulphonate (PAM S) (PAM S), non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer (PAM N) and non-conventional, non-ionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) as flocculants. Clear links between pulp interfacial chemistry, particle interactions and dewatering behaviour, resulting from the influence of hydrolyzable metal ion, pH, temperature, polymer structure type and shear, are established. Optimum conditions for improved, orthokinetic flocculation performance of negatively charged clay particles, reflecting faster settling flocs (>10 m/h) comprised: (i) coagulation, (ii) moderate agitation rate, (iii) shorter agitation time and (iv) anionic rather than non-ionic PAM. The optimum flocculation conditions did not, however, have a significant impact on the final sediment solid content of 20 ? 25 wt%. Further application of shear to pre-sedimented pulps improved consolidation by 5 - 15 wt % solid. Application of the findings and new knowledge gained to real plant tails? case studies for marked improvement in dewaterability through thickening is demonstrated.

There have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. Impurities are removed from crude phosphoric acid (57.75% P2O5) with a mixture of low and high molecular weight alcohols, one of which is hydrophilic and the other is hydrophobic i.e. methanol and hexanol. In a single stage, the phosphate values segregate to the high molecular weight alcohol fraction and the impurities segregate to the low molecular weight alcohol fraction. The optimum ratio for the extraction is found to be 0.5 part methanol, one part impure acid and four parts hexanol where an extraction percent of more than 95% is achieved. Re-extraction of the phosphate value from the solvent is obtained by 6% phosphoric acid and the different factors affecting the re-extraction process have been studied. Finally, the purified acid is concentrated under reduced pressure and passed through activated carbon column, whereas the alcohols are re-circulated. The produced phosphoric acid was found to be in good match with the international specifications of food grade quality acid. A technological flow sheet is elucidated.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,&apos; which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson&apos;s opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

This report describes the development, design, fabrication and testing of a port-able, battery-operated, light scattering monitor (henceforth to be designated as ILSDM) for the rapid measurement of the concentration of respirable dust in mining environments. This instrument incorporates state-of-the-art design characteristics and makes use of advanced solid-state components both for light emission as well as for its detection. The use of a pulsed light source combined with synchronous signal detection minimizes drift problems and optimizes the sensitivity of the measurement. Simplicity of operation, reliability and ruggedness, light weight as well as improved performance were salient objectives of this instrument development program. Continuous clean-air flow screening of all critical optical surfaces, and optimized optical detection and electronic signal processing design resulted in about a hundred-fold decrease of noise and drift with respect to precursor instruments. Equivalent mass concentration measurements 88 low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter can be routinely performed with time constants of about 2 second.

PROPOSALS to use hydrocarbon or natural gases for the reduction of zinc from oxide materials may be traced back through Patent Office files to the early years of the present century. Natural gas at rates cheap enough to compete with solid fuels has been available at or near one major zinc district for more than a decade. That the seemingly meritorious and economically interesting applications of these proposals have not devel-oped into workable processes for direct production of zinc by natural gas cannot be completely ascribed to the proverbial conservatism of the zinc industry. It is possible to produce spelter commercially in normal times from zinc oxide and carbonaceous reducing agents without having a very precise understanding of the chemistry of the process. The reduc-tion by hydrocarbons is not, however, in this class, and the technical complexity of this reduction metallurgy and chemistry prohibits solution of the inherent difficulties by the "hit and miss" methods that are some-times thought to be practical. In a thermodynamic study of the chemistry of zinc smelting, Maier1 made a preliminary study of the chemistry of the use of methane for reducing zinc oxide by thermodynamic means, pointing out that the following reactions, the limits of which could be theoretically predicted, were important: ZnO + CH4 = Zn(gas) + CO + 2H2 [1] CH4 = C -I- 2H2 [2] ZnO + CO = Zn(gas) + CO2 [3] ZnO + H2 = Zn(gas) + H2O [4] Other possible reactions, not discussed in the reference quoted, are: CO2 + CH4 = 2CO + 2H2 [5] H2O + CH4 = CO + 3H2 [6]

Large quantities of solid by-products are generated by the steel industry and other important activity sectors in Europe (power plants, car dismantling companies, urban incinerators) with no or very limited potential for direct recovery. In the frame of a multi¬national project supported by the European Union, a consortium has been created to develop a treatment process able to turn these by-products into valuable metallic and mineral products. VAI has been responsible for the design, erection and start-up of the pilot plant for the new metallurgical process and for the execution of the test campaigns, with the targets defined together with the partners. Up to now, 9 campaigns comprising 60 heats have been performed successfully. By-products from C-Steel and stainless steel plants, as well as fly ash and auto shredder residues, have been used and defined products such as hydraulic binders for cement, metallurgical powders for De-S practice and recycled metal phase have been produced. The mineral products were positively assessed under industrial conditions. Results from cement tests and secondary metallurgy are reported, as well as a detailed characterization.
