The production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) from its minerals such as ilmenite is challenging, and subsequent isolation of titanium from TiO2 is even more difficult because of the metal-oxygen bond strength. Currently, titanium sponge is mainly produced via the Kroll process, which is energy intensive and generates large quantities of waste. A number of international research groups have come up with technologies for the production of titanium metal. However, none of them have been commercialised, because of engineering or economic issues. The team at Bradford have confirmed that ultra-pure titanium powders can be separated from TiO2 powder through metallothermic reduction and are working to scale up the process.

Hosting copper, gold, oil and liquefied natural gas, the country is an interesting target for miners. However, remote locations in inhospitable, unusual and difficult terrain cause problems. The government has worked to create a Sovereign Wealth Fund to manage government surpluses from minerals and energy but PNG scores very low among many criteria, including land dispute resolution, as revealed by the 2014 Canadian Fraser Institute in its survey of senior mining personnel.

Así también se adelanta el cumplimiento de algunos de ellos considerados como prioritarios para la población, ya que los compromisos están asignados para diferentes etapas de la mina (preconstrucción, construcción, operación y cierre).

Application of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies - the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing internet infrastructure - to the mining industry is discussed. IoT technologies are aimed at making projects safer, better optimised and more economic and are applicable to current or new underground or open-pit mines, regardless of size. Two examples are presented of successful implementation of IoT technologies, the Chelopech gold, copper and silver mine in Bulgaria, where production has increased from 500 000 to 2 000 000 tonnes/y and communication costs have been reduced by US $2 500 000 over 2 y, and the Pilbara project in Western Australia, where remotely controlled wirelessly connected autonomous trucks have covered ca. 3 000 000 miles and hauled almost 250 000 000 t of ore since 2008

The Northern Baikal Ni-Cu province is located in Buryatia, south-east Siberia, and geologically is part of the Baikal-Muya volcano-plutonic belt. It is known for numerous PGE-Ni-Cu-bearing mafic-ultramafic intrusions of Neoproterozoic age formed in various geodynamic settings. All these deposits can be regarded as a single Ni-Cu ore cluster located near the Kholodninskoe Pb-Zn deposit, which is ready for mining. In addition, there are less studied, small dyke-like bodies with sulfide mineralisation that formed in a rift setting and may be enriched in Ni, Cu and PGE. Individually, the known bodies are of poor commercial value by their resources, but their close spatial association (<30 km) may make these PGE-Ni-Cu deposits economic in the future. This extended abstract seeks to provide a geological framework of the North Baikal Ni-Cu-PGE province, specifically at the north-eastern Synnyr rift hosting numerous small subvolcanic bodies with Ni-Cu sulfide mineralisation. Some small subvolcanic bodies contain industrial level Ni-Cu deposits (Shanuch, Cabanga-Musongati, Voisey’s Bay, Jinchuan, etc).CITATION:Kislov, E V, 2015. The Townsville prospect is situated approximately 4 km north of the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Drilling in the 1990s delineated a resource of >1 Moz of gold within shallow, skarn breccia-hosted mineralisation associated with quartz-carbonate infill, together with pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and a variety of Au-, Ag- and Bi-telluride minerals. The deepest of these historical holes (TVL034) also intersected copper-gold-silver mineralisation more than 100 m below the gold-rich zone that is associated with calc-silicate skarn breccia. Although copper-gold-silver mineralisation in DDHTVL034 is associated with clinopyroxene-rich skarn, it was also noted that garnet in the skarn breccia became progressively darker in colour with depth, ranging from green at shallow levels to dark red-brown at depth. This indicated that the skarn breccia is zoned, with more proximal garnet skarn at depth possibly indicating an association with porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation.Based on this skarn zonation model, recent drilling at the Titan prospect, located approximately 500 m south of TVL034, was targeted at potential copper-gold silver mineralisation beneath shallow skarn breccia-hosted gold mineralisation. DDHTVL 081 intersected 46 m at 6.36 g/t Au from 68 m and 80.7 m and 1.67 per cent Cu, 1.27 g/t Au and 20.32 g/t Ag from 184 m. The formation of magmatic oxide ore deposits hosted in chemically-evolved layered gabbroic intrusions is attributed to a variety of petrological processes, but there is little to no consensus on the general applicability of each model. Complicating the matter further is that many layered gabbroic intrusions are spatially and temporally associated with alkaline A-type granites, suggesting that there is a petrogenetic relationship between the two types of chemically different rocks. Our experimental results show that petrological modelling using a starting composition of high-Ti basalt from the Emeishan large igneous province can produce evolved silicic liquids that resemble the compositions of microgranular enclaves from the syenitic unit of the bimodal, oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex. The experimental results confirm that bimodal gabbro-granitoid complexes can form from a common parental magma and that early crystallisation of Ti-rich magnetite can explain the formation of the oxide ore deposits in the lower parts of the layered gabbroic intrusions. We conclude that crystallisation of a typical high-Ti basaltic parental magma can produce world-class giant magmatic oxide ore deposits and that the occurrence of some alkaline granites may be an indicator of their presence.CITATION:Shellnutt, J G, Hsia, T W-Y, Liu, T-C and Iizuka, Y, 2015. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The Early Mesoproterozoic (1.6–1.4 Ga) crustal basement of the Cathaysia Block in South China is the ore source bed for the world-famous Nanling W–Sn polymetallic mineralisation.CITATION:Li, H, 2015. Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015.
