Fluidized bed is an important iron-making reactor, especially for the finely sized iron-bearing materials. However, defluidization caused by sticking between particles extremely limited its wide spread commercialization. In this paper, apparent viscosity was put forward to express the ability of particles to resist movement, which is reasonably considered as the comprehensive results of interaction between particles. Meanwhile, an experimental measuring method of apparent viscosity of particles was proposed, during which the torque exerted on the rotating blade in a particle layer is measured, and then the apparent viscosity is obtained based on the motion equations of powder particles. Further, the apparent viscosity of iron particles was measured by using of this method, and the effects of shape, size, and temperature were examined. The data can provide important information for understanding when and why defluidization happened.

Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

The materials used for pump construction vary according to the nature of the solution handled. The pump materials in use are the result of extended experiment and are all giving satisfactory results. Research is still in progress, particularly with stainless steel and rubber lining, both of which show considerable promise. Following are the materials used: For tank-room acid, carrying about 100 grams per liter free sulphuric acid, hard lead is used. Stainless steel is under investigation. Duriron is satisfactory, but requires very careful handling to prevent mechanical breakage. For pulps containing low acid (10 grams per liter), abrasive solids, ferric iron, copper, etc. pumps are made of hard lead. Stainless steel is satisfactory. For pulps containing no acid but carrying abrasive materials and copper, bronze is used. Pulps containing acid (10 grams per liter), copper, iron and nonabra-sive solids require lead pumps. Rubber linings are under investigation. Clear neutral solutions containing copper are handled in bronze pumps; neutral solutions free of copper, acid, abrasive material, etc., in iron or bronze. The hard lead used contains 13 per cent antimony. The stainless steel has the following analysis: Cr, 20.0 per cent; Ni, 7.0; C, 0.25; W, 4.0; Cu, 2.0.

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. Appendix I. Part 1: Description Of Geology & Reserves System Introduction The Ore Evaluation and Reserve programs have been developed to aid in the evaluation of coal deposits, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The "Weighted Moving Average" technique used provides considerable flexibility in dealing with diverse parameters with differing distribution characteristics. Determination of Model Constants "a" and "k" - Unit 1 The flexibility of the method in dealing with diverse value parameter distributions lies in its ability to cater to the individual characteristics of each. These characteristics are embodied in the values determined for constants "a" and "k", namely, local and regional variations in value distributions, respectively. The empirical method used attempts to optimize the "a" - "k" combination. Realistic values for "a" and "k" are entered into the program together with sample values for the required parameters and their respective coordinate location values. All the values within a specified radius from the point being evaluated are used to interpolate a value at that point. (Note, the interpolated point is the location of one of the boreholes, values of which are not used in the calcula¬tion.) 3n a similar manner, interpolated values are calculated for each borehole location and for each parameter. This is done for each possible combination of "a" and "k".

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. Disconnecting devices shall be locked out and prominently tagged by the persons who perform such work, except that in cases where locking out is not possible, such devices shall be opened and prominently tagged by such persons. Mr. Bockosh is an electrical engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines In Pittsburgh, and has devoted the last two years to research on underground illumination. He formerly was a mine maintenance foreman and worked two years underground. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he is now working toward his masters degree in mining. When Congress first legislated light in American coal mines, it was a little like mandating a walk on the moon before the first satellite had been put in orbit. It was never a question, of course, of whether it could be done. But no one knew quite how. It's one thing to string a few light bulbs, and quite something else to provide uniform, sufficient, safe and reliable illumination, with fixtures that will hold up under some of the toughest conditions in the world - in the life-and-death circumstances of a craggy, black cavern filled with dangerous, moving machinery. In fact, in 1969 when Congress originally mandated illumination standards for the work places of underground coal mines, no one even knew just how much light was needed. That question was answered within a year by the National Bureau of Standards. In a study commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Standards determined that underground mine should be illuminated with a light intensity of 0.06 foot-lamberts, a measurement of light reflected from surfaces in the lighted area-as opposed to foot-candles, a measurement of light from the source of illumination-in order for miners to adequately see what they are doing. That study was followed by more detailed research done at the Bureau of Mines' direction by the Research and Development Department of the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Ind. This work evaluated the specific lighting needs of miners engaged In more than 100 different job tasks in all three types of coal mining- conventional, continuous and longwall. The Naval Depot report brought forth nearly 300 pages of detailed lighting data and concluded that proper illumination of mine work areas would serve more than just the cause of mine safety.

A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in case of fire in the following, the capabilities, operations and structure of the program are described with illustrative examples to demonstrate usefulness of using the program. The following experimental hypothesis was to be tested: Null Hypothesis: the coefficients a = 0 J Alternate Hypothesis: One or more of the coefficients a 0 J Correlation and Regression To establish the alternate hypothesis and to test how well the proposed model fits the data, the conventional statistical techniques of correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Additionally, factor analysis was employed to investigate the dependency relationships in the data. Correlation and linear regression are well established statistical procedures in science and engineering. References on these procedures include Spiegel (1961), Anderson (1963), and Draper and Smith (1966). A simple example is stated here. If N observations are made of two variables, x and y, and it is desired to test this data to see if a linear relationship exists, then a model of the form: Y = a0 + a 1 x A-2 is proposed. GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. Aquifer. A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient satu rated permeable material to yield significant quan tities of water to wells and springs. Artesian. Synonymous with confined; see ground water, confined. Capillary fringe. The zone immediately above the water table in which all or some of the interstices are filled with water that is under less than atmospheric pressure and that is continuous with the water below the water table. Conceptual model. A conceptualization of a field hydrogeologic framework that facilitates the development of analytical field testing procedures. The results of the test(s) may force changes in the initial conceptual model. Conductivity, hydraulic. Replaces the term "field coefficient of permeability." The volume of water at the existing kinematic viscosity that will move in unit time under a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured at right angles to the direction of flow, if the porous medium is isotropic and the fluid homogeneous. Confining bed. A body of "impermeable" material stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers; its hydraulic conductivity may range from nearly zero to some value distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. Flow, steady. Any point where the magnitude and direction of the specific discharge are constant in time. Flow, uniform. At every point the specific discharge has the same magnitude and direction. Flow, unsteady. At any point the magnitude or direction of the specific discharge changes with time. Fluid potential. The mechanical energy per unit mass of a fluid at any given point in space and time with respect to an arbitrary state and datum; the fluid potential is proportional to the head. Ground water, confined. Ground water, perched. Unconfined ground water separated from an underlying body of ground water by an unsaturated zone. Ground water, unconfined. Water in an aquifer that has a water table. Head, static. Height above a standard datum of the surface of a column of water (or other liquid) that can be supported by the static pressure at a given point. Homogeneity. Hydrogeologic properties are identical everywhere. Hydraulic gradient. Change in static head per unit of distance in a given direction. Hydrostratigraphic unit. A body of material having considerable lateral extent and comprising a geologic framework for a reasonably distinct hydrogeologic system. Isotropy. Condition in which all significant properties are independent of direction. Porosity. Property of containing interstices or voids; may be expressed quantitatively as the ratio of the volume of its interstices to its total volume. Porosity, effective. Interconnected pore space available for fluid transmission; expressed as a percentage of the total volume occupied by the interconnecting interstices. Potentiometric surface. A surface that represents the static head along a particular specified surface or stratum. Specific retention. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will retain against the pull of gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Specific yield. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will yield by gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Storage, specific. The volume of water released from or taken into storage per unit volume of the porous medium per unit change in head.

The computer program has been developed in conjunction with the rest of the project to evaluate evacuation capabilities of the mines and develop guidelines for the escape systems. There are several problems associated with predicting evacuation performance of a mine. First, the mine has many interconnected passages, shafts, hoists and a number of miners in varying positions. To be able to predict evacuation time requires processing a hugh amount of data. A simplistic approach of determining the miner farthest from the exit and calculating evacuation time for him knowing his walking speeds and hoisting times is not realistic, since the waiting time for the hoist is neglected. The second problem is being able to repeat the calculations for a number of configurations. It may be possible to spend enough time to hand calculate the evacuation parameters for a single mine for a single configuration, but to evaluate capabilities of the evacuation
