Among the different sources of uncertainty in pile bearing capacity prediction including inherent heterogeneity, measurement and model uncertainties, the inherent heterogeneity of soil properties is of particular interest and is considered in this study. Cone tip resistance data are utilized to calculate pile bearing capacity by considering vertical soil variability. In this regard, cone tip resistance component of CPT data is assumed as a random parameter. Realizations of this parameter are achieved with the aid of local average subdivisions and random field theories. Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate different realizations of CPT or CPT-u data. Pile bearing capacity was then calculated by the use of direct method. Pile bearing capacity are predicted for a project in south of Iran using this method and probability density function for the total bearing capacity of pile is plotted. Coefficient of variation of 33% for ultimate bearing capacity shows the variability of bearing capacity due to variation of soil strength in depth. Cumulative probability chart for the ultimate bearing capacity are plotted as an efficient tool for estimating ultimate bearing capacity of piles with different desired confidence levels for vertically variable soil strength properties. Significant difference between mean value of pile bearing capacity (18 MN) and limit with 95% confidence level (8 MN) emphasizes the importance of considering soil variability.

This work investigates some suggested methods for blast vibration monitoring on a hard surface based on 53 tests on a vibration exciter. Errors in the measurement attributable to coupling have been described as function of frequency by the rock-to-mount (or coupling) transmissibility, ie ratio of the velocity of the vibration sensor mount to the velocity of the rock motion. Transmissibility has been measured from 2 to 200 Hz, at two vibration levels (5 and 20 mm/s), in four seismographs. Attachment methods with an anchor, thermal adhesive and gypsum plaster allow stiff rock-to-mount coupling. They ensure accurate measurements (errors below 0.3 dB) for frequencies commonly found in blasting (below 100 Hz) irrespective of the mount characteristics and the vibration level. Free laid mounts and sandbagged vibration sensors lead generally to a poor, weak coupling. Errors are non-linear errors with the input velocity, ie the operating frequency window narrows as the velocity of the ground increases. Free mounts follow ground motion acceptably well (error up to 0.4 dB) at both vibration levels and frequencies below 15 Hz. At higher frequencies, free mounts lead to the largest distortions with expected errors ranging from 0.8 to 6.6 dB. Sandbagging limits the expected errors below 1.3 dB, but it does not prevent large errors that can be up to 4.5 dB. The Iron and steel industry is one of the most intensive energy consuming processes. The majority of iron making processes is now directed towards the uses of fossil-based energy sources like coke, coal and oil. Recently, emphasis has been paid to replace part of fossil- based energy sources with renewable biomass-derived reducing agents. In the present work, the possibility of the effective use of woody biomass in carbon-iron oxide composites was investigated. Wood powder was carbonized in N2 atmosphere at 300 up to 450oC. The carbon content in the produced bio-char increased with temperature. The porosity of the char arises from maintaining the cellular structure inherent in wood biomass increases with temperature. The reduction behavior of four iron oxide-bio char composites having different fixed carbon content were carried out non-isothermally up to 1200oC in Ar atmosphere using thermogravimetric anlyser (TGA). Quadruple mass spectroscopy (QMS) was also adopted to measure the CO, CO2 concentrations in the off gases resulted during reduction process. The effect of volatile matter on the reduction of iron oxide was intensively studied. The different phases developed in the reduced product were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The reduction of composites was found to proceed in a stepwise manner (Fe2O3?Fe3O4?FexO?Fe).

"Fe-Ga alloys have a large low-field magnetostriction and these alloys are attractive candidates in energy conversion and harvesting applications. Small additions of W also increase the magnetostriction of Fe. In this paper changes in magnetostriction by W substitution for Ga in various Fe-x at.% Ga alloys are presented. Fe-Ga-W single crystals were grown using vertical Bridgman Growth technique. [001]-orientated single crystal samples were prepared with faces within 1 degree off <100> orientation. The samples were annealed at 1150 °C in the alpha-phase region and water quenched. The magnetostriction coefficient (3/2)A-100 measurements were made on these Fe-Ga-W single crystals. The discovery of an order of magnitude enhancement in the magnetostriction of Fe with Ga addition coupled with low saturation magnetic fields, and excellent mechanical properties opened up the possibility of obtaining larger magnetostriction values in other low-cost ductile a-Fe phase based alloys with alloying additives that are less expensive than rareearths such as Tb and Dy [2·4l_ The magnetostriction values observed in Fe-Ga single crystals are sensitive to thermal history and composition. The formation of second short range ordering phases and local defects inside crystal structure can also cause a dramatic change to this alloy's magnetostriction behavior [5-9l_"

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

Prior laboratory work has demonstrated that much of the fine ash forming minerals entering a flotation froth are there as a result of water carryover- from the bulk contents of the flotation cell (Arnold and Aplan, 1986a). Using a bank of four 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) Wemco flotation cells cleaning a well-liberated Lower Kittanning seam coal, test results show that the sulfur and ash content of the froth is directly related to the water content of the froth (or inversely related to the percent solids in the froth). Reagent changes that result in a watery froth produce a higher ash content in the froth. A direct comparison of laboratory and plant results show that the standard laboratory flotation test produces a product higher in sulfur and ash than that produced in the plant. Caution should be exercised when extrapolating laboratory test results to the plant situation. A method of estimating coal flotation product quality in the plant based on laboratory tests is given.

"Mining is a very water intensive industry. As such, the industry has become dependent on applying alternate sources in efforts to minimize the impact on the locally available fresh water. Sources such as recycled water, sea water, and even acid mine drainage have been applied at some limited applications, while other mines may not even have the option of fresh water available in their region. However, the different sources of water will have varying concentrations and types of soluble salts and suspended solids, which can lead to dramatic differences in mineral processing when comparing these types of waters. Water quality is known to affect bubble generation and strength, mineral surface charge, and even reagent coordination properties. This paper focuses on the exploration of how water quality and soluble salts affect the flotation of iron and titanium containing minerals from feldspar, and the design of flotation collectors for optimal performance in this water.INTRODUCTIONFeldspar is defined as a tectosilicate mineral with the generic structure of MAlxSixO8, where M represents the cation (Celik, 2001). Feldspar is most often found naturally occurring with quartz, iron containing minerals (i.e mica), and titanium containing minerals (i.e. rutile). The alumina component of feldspar is of interest to glass making, while the alkali metal component is of interest to ceramics (Vidyadhar, 2002). In glass making, the alumina is known to improve product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. In ceramics, the alkalis act as a flux; a flux lowers the melting temperature of the mineral mixture, and assists in connecting the other components present in ceramics. Quartz is stated as having a negative effect on the melting point of the feldspar. Although quartz is typically not removed during the feldspar applications in the glass industry, it needs to be reduced for the ceramics industry. Iron and titanium based minerals are known to have negative effects on color and quality of the products in both glass and ceramics. Thus, these “contaminants” must be reduced to a certain product specification via feldspar beneficiation (Table 1)."

"Water composition has a significant effect on flotation. A better understand the role of water composition in flotation is very important for process quality and performance. Based on source of process water, the concentrations of the dissolved ions, hardness, contaminants and residual composition of reagents can varied in the process water. The various water resources employed during lead and zinc flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed on the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals were released into the flotation pulp.This paper includes a research for the effect of different water compositions on lead and zinc sulphide flotation. Experiments were carried out five types of water such as tap water, recycling water, tailing dam water, underground mine water and sea water. The ore sample was obtained from Esan Balikesir-Balya mine. The mineralogical study of ore sample shows that it contains mainly galena, sphalerite, pyrite, hematite, quartz, diopside, epidote, calcite, and chlorite. It is found that recycling water and tailing dam water has a positive effect on recovery of lead and zinc minerals and detrimental effect on content of both minerals. This result may explain with remaining reagents in these waters. Underground mine water and tap water gave nearly the same recoveries of zinc. Sea water affects the recovery lead and zinc negatively."

"As part of research to develop a novel flash ironmaking process using reduction of iron ore concentrate by natural gas or hydrogen, sulfur and phosphorus distribution ratios between MgOsaturated slag and iron were determined in the temperature range 1550-1650°C under three different gas atmospheres: H2/H2O, H2/H2O/CO/CO2, and CO/CO2. The distribution coefficients of sulfur (Ls) were 4.0, 2.0, and 0.8, respectively, under these atmospheres. The distribution coefficients of phosphorus (Lp) were, respectively, 8, 17, and 20 under these atmospheres. In the flash process over -25 wt% P and S volatilize during ore concentrate downward flight in the reactor shaft in addition to avoiding coke. Therefore, iron produced by the flash ironmaking process would have much lower sulfur contents than the typical hot metal produced by the BF.IntroductionGiven the issues related to large carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption in the existing ironmaking technologies, a novel flash ironmaking technology was conceived by Sohn [1-3] at the University of Utah. This technology is the first ironmaking process that will convert iron ore concentrate directly to metallic iron in-flight. This process will produce iron directly from concentrate without requiring pelletization or sintering and avoid the need for coke. In addition, this process concept takes full advantage of the fine particle size of concentrate with a large surface area, which permits rapid reduction by a gas. In this novel ironmaking process, potential reductants and fuels are H2, natural gas, and coal gas. Therefore, an iron-slag bath is expected to be at equilibrium with gas atmospheres of mainly H2/H2O or CO/CO2/H2/H2O, respectively, corresponding to the use of H2 or natural gas/coal gas. Since the effects of an H2O- containing atmosphere on slag properties have not been studied before, it is critical for the development of the novel flash process to determine these effects. In H2-H2O-CO-CO2 gas mixtures under ironmaking conditions, H20 was found to have the most pronounced effect on the slag chemistry [ 4, 5]. In addition, it was found in this laboratory that water in the gas atmosphere affected the distribution of Mn between slag and molten iron [6]. Most previous work used CO/CO2 gas mixture to control oxygen partial pressure (p02) [7, 8]. Others used only inert atmospheres [9], although Kor and Richardson [10] used a mixture of C02/H2 to control p02. For phosphorus, previous research focused on Ar [11], Ar-CO mixture [12], CO [13], CO/CO2 [14] or N2/CO [15]. Therefore, it was necessary to investigate the effect of water vapor content in H2-H2O-CO-CO2 mixtures on the equilibrium distribution of sulfur and phosphorus between CaO-MgOsatSiO2-Al2O3-FeO- MnO (0.2-0.8 wt%)-P2O5 (0.1-0.9 wt%) slag and molten iron as part of the development of the novel flash ironmaking technology."

The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, type and spacing of support and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play an important effect on the stability of roadway. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures and water softens some rocks and promotes the closure problem. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory rock tests.

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.

The kinetics of the Cr2O3-based scale oxidation and volatilization were studied in the presence of water vapour (H2O). A commercial Cr2O3-based scale forming Type 310S stainless steel was examined at the ambient pressure (0.1 MPa) and 550ºC in relatively low and high H2O containing environments of air- 10% H2O and air- 70% H2O, respectively. The increase in the partial pressure of H2O (pH2O) from 10% to 70% resulted in transition of the oxidation and volatilization kinetics from the parabolic rate law for air-10% H2O to the paralinear rate law for air-70% H2O. The kinetics transition was attributed to the increase in the Cr loss rate from the base scale after coupons exposure in air- 70% H2O. The significant role of the Mn alloying element in the base scale protectiveness was also discussed in the context of the Cr2O3-based scale stability.

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

It is well known that weak floor conditions in central Illinois affect pillar and mine opening stability. The floor interaction with coal pillars and immediate mine roof are being studied using two dimensional (plane-strain) elastic-plastic finite element models. The effects of varying soft floor thickness, coal seam- thickness, width of mine openings and strength parameters of coal and mine floor are being evaluated. The finite element models developed by Agbabian Associates and Dahl were utilized in this study.

This paper presents a method for estimating the strength and stability of model coal pillars with bedding planes (weakness planes) inclination. The strength of coal relative to the angular difference between the principal stress direction and bedding planes is considered. The failure behaviour of model coal pillars containing weakness plane inclination by using servo-control Schenck Machine are shown. Uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength of coal specimens are investigated, and test results indicated that the strength of coal pillars depends on the weakness planes inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However, it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of the coal specimens is reduced. An empirical method is given for prediction the compressive strength of coal containing weakness planes inclination. The results of this method are compared with the experimental results and Jaeger theory. Finally, three well-known empirical strength criteria were tested against the triaxial test data for coal containing weakness planes inclination.
