Much of the process control effort in the mineral industry uses proportional-integral-derivative controllers that require periodic retuning. Retuning hundreds of controllers typically employed in a single plant is a formidable task for the control engineer. Adaptive controllers offer an alternative to this problem, since they are designed to tune themselves. Four schemes of adaptive control-gain scheduling, model reference adaptive control, self-tuning regulator, and optimal adaptive controllers-are discussed with process examples. The control of a ball mill circuit with a multivariable self-tuning regulator is illustrated. This controller encompasses the advantages of the other three controllers and is applicable for a wide range of process variability.

Composition data is needed as input for executing process control and management of particulate separation for flotation control. While requirements for composition data can be satisfied in many cases by manual sampling and analysis, automatic sampling and assay systems are now viewed as justified for all but the simplest or smallest processes. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) has satisfied requirements for the main portion of metalliferous sulfide ore flotation processes as XRFA technology evolved in reliability and sophistication from its beginnings in the late 1950's. In recent years, advanced on-stream analysis technologies have reached levels of development suitable for use in process control to increase efficiencies of important processes in mining and minerals industries such as coal fines flotation and industrial minerals beneficiation (particularly phosphate beneficiation) where XRFA methods have been inapplicable. Recent technical developments pertinent to use of advanced technologies as well as improvements to established on-stream composition analysis methods are discussed.

The aerospace industry celebrated 100 years of powered flight in 2003, and the remarkable achievements that have occurred during the past 100 years are in no small way due to major developments in materials. Modern alloys for airframes, engines and other major sub-systems have evolved through the intelligent application of new processing concepts involving melting, casting, hot and cold working, heat treatment and more recently vapour phase processing. Alloy design has evolved in parallel to allow maximum benefits to be achieved from these processing advances. However, the pace of development seems to be slowing and future gains are likely to be made by learning how to extract major value from aerospace assets. Understanding the modes of deterioration and establishing cost effective lifetimes by holistic life cycle management seem to be the way of the future. Extending component lifetimes by repair, rejuvenation and refurbishment are all viable possibilities and they offer great opportunities for Canada, which, traditionally, has been a major user of modern aerospace materials rather than a supplier. The challenges for metallurgist, physicists and engineers will be no less than in the past and should create new business opportunities for Canada. The scenario described above will be developed by calling upon examples drawn from the author's experience.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.

BHP Australia Coal Pty. Ltd. (BHPAC) manages and, through its parent company BHP, partly owns seven large opencut mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In terms of developments in surface mining in Australia, the operations of BHPAC are as representative as any. The seven mines managed by BHPAC produce a combined total of about 40 Mt/a (44 million stpy) of mostly high quality coking coal. They also produce small but increasing amounts of thermal and PCI coal. Virtually all of the coal produced is sold on the export market. In 1993, Australia exported 133 Mt (146 million st) of coal. Salable production was 172 Mt (189 million st) in New South Wales and Queensland and 180 Mt (198 million st) nationwide. Mining systems Surface coal mines in Queensland can be typified as large, long-strike-length, shallow-dipping and sometimes multi-seam dragline operations. There are exceptions. Blair Athol, for instance, works a 30- to 40-m (100- to 130-ft) seam beneath shallow cover but is still a dragline operation. Moura is truly multi-seam and steeper dipping but also is still a dragline operation. Mines in the Ipswich area are small shovel-truck operations.

The need to provide a sufficient quality and quantity of backfill continues to increase in South Africa, particularly as related to the increasing depth of mining. More and more applications require well designed fill systems either as classified or cemented backfill, and in some applications even tailings/aggregate based backfills. The paper discusses developments in backfill technology in South Africa with special emphasis on reliable system designs and operations, particularly as related to the preparation and hydraulic transportation aspects. Approaches for the alleviation of previous problems associated with premature pipe failures in vertical shaft columns for the distribution of tailings based backfills are discussed. Resulting from CSIRÆs developmental work, reliable full-flow systems, which can operate at low system pressures, have become a common practice, provided that backfill flowrates and internal pipe sizes are well matched. This aspect is reviewed. With regard to the tailings/aggregate based backfills the paper reviews some of the results of comprehensive in situ monitoring and the development of such systems. It is shown that a thorough understanding of the effects of aggregate top size, fines content and slurry relative density is required in order to ensure the restartability of temporarily shut-down pipelines. Some innovative technologies for the comminution of development waste underground to yield aggregate products potentially suitable or hydraulic transportation and backfilling, are briefly discussed.

THE literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: I. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the literature of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others-a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ballmilling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. "Process technology and design trends for copper, zinc, and nickel electrowinning cellhouses include focusing on energy reduction, productivity, and acid mist abatement. Larger electrodes, longer cells, automation, and higher current densities are leading to more capital-effective designs. The latest cellhouse designs include installation of automated electrode-handling systems, thereby removing more operators from the cellhouse. These technology and design trends result in lower electrowinning operating costs and improved purity of electro won cathode.INTRODUCTIONTechnology transfer between similar industries is an important process in improving product quality and productivity, and reducing operating costs. The electrowinning (EW) recovery of base metals, such as zinc, copper and nickel, is no different. The zinc industry with its larger EW product-handling requirements as compared to nickel and copper, has been driven to automation technology and the use of larger equipment. This technology has been transferred to copper. Nickel has led development and application in large-scale anode and divided-cell technologies but, due to nickel being produced in multiple forms (not just cathode) and being a small part of the whole complex nickel process route, the quantities of electrowon nickel are small compared to copper and zinc. Copper process technology in acid mist abatement was recently transferred to nickel. The focus in copper EW has been on energy reduction and productivity."

Mixed cable waste, which amounts to more than 200,000 tpy in Germany, is subjected to recycling. In most cases cable recycling means only recovering copper and/or aluminum metals. The remaining cable waste contains nearly 3-8% of the reusable materials, and is disposed of in landfills. Aluminum is recovered within copper products and leads to lower product prices. Preliminary laboratory tests show that the use of shaking hydro-tables as well as electrostatic separators result in less than 1 % of metals in the residual material. The products are high in grade at metal recoveries of more than 85%. Furthermore, applying a modified electrostatic separator may also lead to an efficient Cu-Al separation. The separation efficiency amounts to up to 95%.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Canadian open-pit mines are highly mechanized and use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. During the past few years, productivity improvements at Canadian open-pit mines have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment, in-pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of global positioning systems (GPS). Mine planning has become computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning. Equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep the equipment functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1997, the mining and mineral processing sector employed 370,000 Canadians, contributing $26.2 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The value of production of the Canadian mineral industry, including coal, amounted to $19.1 billion in 1997. Gold remained Canada's leading mineral with production valued at $2.8 billion. This was followed by copper ($2 billion), coal ($1.9 billion), zinc ($1.6 billion) and nickel ($1.9 billion). [ ] Synthetic crude oil from oil-sands mining operations in Alberta represents an important part of Canada's petroleum production. In 1997, the value of synthetic oil production was $2.87 billion. Canadian oil-sands mining has contributed significant technology developments in Canada.

"The object of the paper is to discuss the developments in Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) technology for gold recovery. The CIP process is comprised of four major operations:(a) adsorption of precious metals onto activated carbon;(b) elution (stripping) of precious metals from the loaded carbon;(c) electrowinning of the precious metals from the concentrated eluate;(d) regeneration of the eluted carbon before recycle to the adsorption process.A detailed review of the technological developments in each of the above operations is presented together with a brief theoretical background of the underlying processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the CIP process are discussed in comparison with conventional zinc precipitation. IntroductionThe carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process involves the use of activated carbon for treatment of pulps containing dissolved precious metals, and provide s an alternative to the conventional gold recover y processes using filtration or counter-current decantation in conjunction with the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. The commercial application o f the CIP process in gold processing technology is a fairly recent development and it is of growing importance around the world.The fact that activated carbon ha s the property of adsorbing precious metals from solution was first published in 1847. In the following years , a great deal of work was carried out to develop an over-all recover y process using carbon, but all attempts were uneconomical because the loaded carbon had to be smelted to recover the gold.It was not until 1950 that Zadra, at the United States Bureau of Mines Research Centre in Reno, Nevada, developed a technique for stripping the loaded carbon using sodium sulphite-sodium hydroxide mixtures and then recovering the gold from the stripping solution by electrolysis. However, this process was not effective for stripping silver and further testwork was carried out on alternative stripping techniques. In 1952, Zadra published a paper describing the use of a hot sodium hydroxide- sodium cyanide stripping technique, which was effective in stripping both gold and silver. This paper included a description and flowsheet for the CIP process which is essentially the same as we know it today. This technique was used in the first major CIP plant, constructed and commissioned in 1973 by Hornestake Gold Mining Company. Since then there have been numerous CIP plants built in the U.S A., South Africa and Australia."

Rietspruit Opencast Services was one of the first opencast coal mines to successfully employ cast blasting to aid in the burden removal operation. Initial work on cast blasting began at the mine in 1980 and has developed to a stage where approximately 26% of the total burden material is cast to a point where handling by draglines is no longer required.

Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

The Australian coal industry is characterised by efficient fines recovery, and the climate does not dictate the use of thermal drying. With the increasing trend to underground mining and hence finer ROM coal, and market pressures for reduced product moistures, dewatering issues are assuming increasing importance in the Australian coal industry. The greatest potential gains in dewatering performance undoubtedly lie in the treatment of finely sized material. This paper examines the dewatering issues which have been recognised by the Australian coal industry, and describes current Australian research in this field.
