Flotation tests were carried out on six coal samples of different rank as well as their oxidized samples. A mixture of diesel oil and alcohols was used in these tests. Surface oxidation caused a distinct decrease during flotation recovery with some improvement in the grade. The reduction in the recovery increased with increasing concentration of the oxidizing agent. The floatability of low rank coals was affected by oxidation to a higher degree than the floatability of medium and high rank coals. The recovery-size curves of oxidized samples were similar in shape to the recovery-size curves of non-oxidized coals.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through the use of more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the air bubbles, water, and ore, rapidly attaching the hydrophobic mineral to the bubble surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. A rougher concentrate containing 4.5 pct copper was obtained from a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper. Over 99 pct copper was recovered from the ore at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing reatrictiona on effluent pH, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. Chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pH levels to specified limits.

The single line grinding circuit at Bond Gold's Colosseum mine consists of variable speed drive semi-autogenous (SAG) milling and secondary grinding with a fixed speed ball mill. There are several advantages and disadvantages of operating SAG mills with variable speed drives. Discussion in this paper will focus on the effects of variable speed SAG milling in relation to mill liner wear, grinding media consumption, and mill operating availability. Operating experiences, corresponding mill data, and pertinent design changes are also presented.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

Acid mine drainage is still a common problem in the northern Appalachian high sulfur coal region despite mining and reclamation practices applied to control it. Mining companies must treat water with alkali to raise pH and precipitate metals in order to discharge the water into receiving streams. Common chemicals used to treat drainage are limestone, hydrated lime, soda ash briquettes, caustic soda, and ammonia. Each chemical has advantages or disadvantages under specific conditions. A simple spreadsheet program was developed to evaluate costs of treating acid mine drainage across several specified water quality parameters and time horizons. Caustic soda and soda ash were shown to be cost effective for treating low flows and low acidity over short time periods. However, as quantity of water increased, quality decreased, and time horizon increased, the ammonia and hydrated lime systems were found to be much cheaper than caustic soda.

There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

In case of a major fire in a tunnel between stations or ventilation shafts, if the buoyancy effect of the hot gasses is stronger than the airflow induced by the fans, the risk of backlayering could restrict the safe evacuation of people. Obstructions in the tunnel and alternate airflow paths can further reduce the air velocities past the fire. Currently there are two computer programs available to address the issue of underground fires: o "Subway Environment Simulation" (SES), Version 3.0, developed by Associated Engineers, a Joint Venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., De Leuw Cather & Co., and Kaiser Engineers, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Transportation o "MFIRE", Version 1.26, developed at Michigan Technological University for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. As implied by its name, the SES program was developed specifically for the analysis of subway ventilation systems. It can be used to analyze the heat released into, and removed from, a subway or vehicular tunnel and to determine the effect of ventilation elements on airflows throughout the network of stations or other merging tunnels. It has a special feature allowing the user to predict the effects of a fire at any location within the subway system. Version 3.0 of the SES program is designed to be used with a "critical velocity" calculation in order to determine whether or not tunnel airflows can be controlled during a train fire emergency. The original version of the program was written in FORTRAN for mainframe computers, such as the IBM 4381. Recently ICF Kaiser Engineers has compiled a version of the SES program for PC use. The MFIRE program simulates the interdependence between a mine ventilation system, with its pertinent fans and structures, and changes in ambient conditions or a source of heat, such as a fire. It also accounts for natural ventilation. The program is written in FORTRAN 77 and compiled for 8086/8088 based microprocessors, allowing it to be run on an IBM PC or compatible computer with a 2.0 or a later version of DOS, 256K random access memory (RAM), and a text editor. This paper reports the comparative results of an application of both programs for the same network in a recent study.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the dust control effectiveness of two-phase flow systems in a full-scale model mine using a mockup of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. In a two-phase flow system, air and water flow simultaneously through the nozzle. Air pressure varies from 10 to 60 psi, and water at 30 to 50 psi. Coal dust was introduced at the face, and dust concentrations were monitored at the operator locations and in the return. When compared with a conventional spray system, a symmetrical two-phase flow system reduced dust levels during the box cut by 43 pct at the operator location, and 30 pct in the face return. Dust levels, however, increased at the off-operator position during the slab cut. A directional two-phase flow system reduced dust levels at both operator locations by more than 90 pct in the box cut mode. While the use of two-phase flow systems will reduce respirable dust levels and water usage, it requires an air supply to the miner. Moreover, the ability of the two-phase flow system to redirect the dust cloud makes nozzle orientation a critical factor.

Experimental designs are data acquisition plans which, if followed exactly, will quickly provide process engineers with information to assess statistically the individual and joint influence of factors on responses to permit of rapid decision making. Methodology employed to construct data acquisition plans is described in some detail. In production environments, factorial designs are appropriate for most purposes. Use of two level factorials to make decisions is described for a grinding circuit.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

Introduction The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; and (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Although boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams. The major characteristics of coal and impurities from the standpoint of mechanical cleaning are particle size composition, generally called size consist; density differences; the relative friability of the coal and its associated impurities; hardness; and strength. Some of the other factors related to preparation are petrographic composition and rank. RANK CLASSIFICATION Coal is a general designation for a great number of solid organic minerals with different compositions and properties; all are rather rich in carbon and have a dark color, generally black. Next to mineral oil and kerogen, coal is the most important reservoir of carbon in the world. Carbon is an indispensable necessity of life as well as the main source of energy. Coals are found in stratified deposits, sometimes at great depths. All coals owe their origins to slow decomposition and chemical conversion of immense masses of organic material. As found in seams, coal is a heterogeneous mixture of organic and inorganic materials. Not only are there large differences in the properties of coal originating from different seams, but also in coal removed from different locations in a single seam. A genetic relationship exists between peats, brown coals, lignites, biturninous coals, and anthracites. As a whole, the process of coal formation, or coalification, proceeds as a continuous transformation of plant material, each phase characterized by a degree of coalification, or rank. As a measure of this rank, the carbon content or some related parameter can be used.

Improvements in metallurgical performance are continually being made in the attempt to achieve the metallurgist's goal of maximum concentration, minimal loss of recovery and at costs that maximize profit margins. Innovative technological advances provide a means for the metallurgist to more thoroughly understand the mechanisms of separation and foster new ideas from old. Problems associated with the implementation of new technology can be overcome effectively if the metallurgist thoroughly understands the metallurgical systems with which he is working.

Kennecott Corporation, in joint venture with Galactic Resources Ltd., recently began operation of an open pit gold mining and milling facility near Columbia, South Carolina. The deposit consists of two ore bodies (North and South deposits) hosted in deformed and altered meta-volcanics and meta-sediments of the Carolina Slate Belt. This paper describes the rock mechanics and engineering geology investigations conducted for design of interim, ultimate and final reclamation slopes for the South Pit. Emphasis includes the successful use of drill core orientation techniques to confirm complex geologic structure at depth; the development of a three-dimensional rock mass competency model, incorporating surface mapping data, results of bench mapping documentation, field index testing and laboratory testing; and kinematic assessments for design of optimum slopes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. Ventilation of gas mines keeps necessary sanitation and hygienic conditions for labor in mines and increases the safety by dilution and removal of hazardous and dangerous gases in accordance with the safety rules. Several different concepts exist at the present time to design mine ventilation control systems. But technical ideas have been developed inadequately and technological solutions have not been investigated experimentally enough to build a serviceable system. This paper presents a new concept of high- efficiency mine ventilation process control system (MVPCS). The methods of modern system engineering (Kalman, 1969) are used to establish its functional and algorithmic structure. A three level hierarchical principle of system building is considered.
