American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

In many parts of the world deep level mining relies heavily on the use of refrigeration for providing safe thermal underground conditions. The trend in South Africa in recent years has been to locate the refrigeration plants on surface and to use these plants to chill water that is then distributed throughout the mine. The surface cooling installation normally consists of a pre-cooling tower in which water is first chilled before it is sent to one or more refrigeration plants for further cooling. Presently, the majority of these refrigeration plants use CFC refrigerants; however, to conform with the Montreal Protocol, these plants will have to be replaced or converted for use with alternative refrigerants. The optimum design criteria for installations using the new generation of refrigerants will be affected by their characteristics and are likely to be different from those currently in use. In light of these developments the industry is examining a number of alternative systems for future installations including water vapour refrigeration. Factors that affect the decision on the type of refrigeration system to be used in mine installations are reviewed. INTRODUCTION Gold mining has been carried out in South Africa for over 100 years and most of the reserves close to surface have been mined out; this has led to mining taking place at greater depths, approaching 4000 m below surface. One of the consequences of operating at these greater depths is that it is necessary to install refrigeration plants to cool the ventilation air so as to provide safe and healthy working conditions. With the current low precious metal prices there is pressure on mines to cut costs and in recent years there has been considerable effort devoted to the design of more cost effective and efficient refrigeration plants and cooling systems. In the last 10 years there have been many studies into the use of ice for specific applications (Eschenburg et al., 1986; Hemp, 1988 and Ramsden and Lloyd, 1992) and at present there are three ice making plants in operation on South African mines, each of which produces ice in different processes. In addition, detailed design studies have been carried out on the "split ammonia system" (Napier and Patterson, 1992). In this refrigeration system the evaporator is located underground close to where the cooling is needed, whilst the condenser and heat rejection system is on surface. As far as refrigeration plants are concerned the trend has been to move away from standard package units to custom built refrigeration installations. This has given the design engineer greater flexibility in the choice of key components for refrigeration installations. For example both screw and centrifugal compressors are used, the heat exchangers for the evaporators and condensers may be either plate or shell and tube, and in a number of installations evaporative condensers are used. In addition, the following refrigerants are in use, R12, R22 and ammonia. The acceptance of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments by the South African government will restrict the use of CFC refrigerants and it will be necessary to re-evaluate various refrigeration systems, including those that do not use conventional refrigerants, such as air cycle and water vapour systems, for new surface installations. Although new systems and refrigerants are being developed, only the following refrigeration installations will be compared in this paper: - a refrigeration system using R134a which has properties similar to R12 - refrigeration system using R22 or a new alternative refrigerant with very similar properties - an ammonia refrigeration system - a water vapour refrigeration system The benefits of new cooling systems are not discussed in detail, since they are largely mine specific and outside the scope of the present paper. Since the optimum design for an air cycle system (del Castillo, 1988) is dependent on the mine layout, this system is also not included.

Introduction Grinding ball wear in wet grinding is due to a complex combination of abrasion, corrosion, impact and their interactions. The ball charge is continually falling from a height greater than half of the ball mill's diameter, and contact is made with ore particles or other balls. Abrasive wear occurs through penetration and plowing of media materials from the ball surface by hard ore particles (Gangopadhyay and Moore, 1985). Electrochemical interactions between the abraded and unabraded areas of the ball surfaces, as well as between the grinding media and the minerals, occur in grinding mill pulps (Adam et al., 1986). The wear depends on the media composition, the hardness and the corrosive/abrasive characteristics of the slurry. The marked-ball-wear test method was used to evaluate the performance of grinding media under nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. Also, the wear mode was studied by observing the grinding media surface under a scanning electron microscope. In general, grinding media of high hardness and high chromium contents were found to have better corrosive wear resistance than those of low hardness and low chromium contents (Jang, Iwasaki and Moore, 1988). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the size distribution and the shape of wear debris in a study of the wear rates and wear behaviors of grinding balls. Experimental Materials The grinding ball alloys used in this investigation were: •martensitic stainless steel (MSS; 0.96% C and 16.2% Cr), •high-carbon, low-alloy steel (HCLA; 0.89% C and 0.53% Cr), and •mild steel (MS; 0.22% C and 0.09% Cr). The mineral used in this study was synthetic corundum, because it was on hand and contained no magnetic impurities. Debris A 203- mm (8-in.) diam porcelain mill was used for grinding the corundum. The mill charge consisted of: •1200 g of 12-grit synthetic corundum, •770 mL of 0.05 mole/L Na2SO4 (61% solids), and •125 steel balls of nominally 25-mm (1-in.) diam. To minimize the debris corrosion, nitrogen was introduced into the mill. Grinding with MSS, HCLA-steel or MS balls was conducted for 2 hr at 51 rpm. The grinding time using the MS ball was varied from 0.5 hr to 2 hr in an attempt to study the debris amount and shape as a function of time. The debris was collected with a hand magnet from the ground slurry and separated from the corundum particles using a Davis magnetic tube. After the separation, the debris particles were immediately washed with acetone and then filtered and dried. Debris size analysis Buckbee-Mears 3-in.-diam, micro-mesh sieves and an electromagnetic shaker were used for determining the debris size distribution. In sieving, isopropyl alcohol was used. The debris fraction collected from each sieve was washed with acetone, dried and then weighed on an analytical balance. [ ]

In the paper, the adsorption properties of dissolved ions on the surface of collophane and dolomite are studied using zeta potential measurement, ESCA and UV adsorption spectrum both in distilled water and in the supernatant of each other. The effect of dissolved ions on the flotation separation of collophane and dolomite under SCO depressant and oleate is discussed on the basis of above analyses.

A fluorite ore (51.85 % CaF2) containing high contents of calcite, quartz and iron oxides was upgraded by flotation using a new reagent, oleoyl sarcosine (OS). In addition, quebracho and sodium silicate were used as depressants for calcite and quartz, respectively. The effect of pH, collector and depressants concentrations on grade and recovery was determined with the aim of optimizing the flotation conditions. Application of the two-stage cleaning achieved a concentrate assaying 92.17 % CaF2 with 80.1 % recovery. The Si02 content (0.76 %) was below the required level of 1 % SiO2. The mechanism of interaction between OS and fluorite, as compared to oleic acid, is also elucidated based on the zeta potential measurements.

More than 544 Mt (600 million st) of coal are handled annually for use by this country's coal fired power plants. Coal is transported in various ways: overland conveyors, railcars, trucks and barges. It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise. To ensure that power plant availability is not jeopardized by coal handling problems, the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) developed a research program aimed at addressing utility coal handling problems. The program has identified key areas, and is investigating the cost and cause of coal handling problems as well as the solutions to these problems. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop a "handleability index" that utilities can use in their coal specifications or hardware for a utility's sampling system to predict handleability and determine if a coal shipment should be accepted.

With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. Introduction The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall et al., 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal and post-test examination of a 10-cm-long x 10-cm-diam cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ. A test hole was diamond cored in the recrystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diam, and dips at 10.4°. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends. Seal installation Surveys to assist in selecting the interval to seal consisted of core logging, video logging and constant-head injection tests using a straddle-packer unit. The location selected, 3 m from the lower end of the hole, had low hydraulic conductivity (3 x 10-10 to 3 x 10-9 cm/sec) and was free of significant fractures. The grout used, an expansive Class A cement, was provided by Dowell-Schlumberger, Tulsa, OK. A grout mass about 1.5 m in length was installed, with a dump bailer, above a temporary mechanical plug. Groundwater in the hole, if any, was minimal during placement. After 13 days of curing, the grout mass was partially drilled out from both ends, leaving a seal 10 cm long. Water distribution in rock mass The distribution of water and fluid pressure in the rock mass near the seal appears to be complex. The generally dry condition of the borehole and rock mass suggests that the rock mass near the seal was unsaturated prior to the injection tests of this research. The injection tests presumably created an expanding saturated zone around the seal. However, anomalously high fluid pressures, consistently recorded by one of two piezometers installed near the seal, suggest connection to a source of significant natural hydraulic head. Comparable head variations for closely spaced piezometers have been reported by others (Sowers, 1976). [ ] Seal testing The seal was tested for 3.5 years, using steady constant-head, tracer travel-time, dye-injection, head-buildup and transient constant-head tests. These tests are fully described in Greer and Daemen, 1991. In the head-buildup test, transient flow occurs through the seal (and rock mass) to a closed, water-filled interval of the borehole adjacent to the seal. The test consists of monitoring the rise in head in the closed interval until steady conditions are approached. The test may be analyzed in terms of a one dimensional analytical model to obtain the effective hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and specific storage (Sss) of the seal. Analysis in terms of an axisymmetric three-dimensional numerical model may yield properties of both the seal and rock mass.

The problem was to evaluate the on-line detection of rock properties through acoustic emission sensors. Acoustic emission sensors, when attached to crushers, grinders, and roof bolters, are robust, economical, and relatively maintenance free. Our objective was to relate acoustic emissions to rock fracture mechanisms, including micropore closures, linear elastic deformations, and crack propagation. We evaluated acoustic emissions from steel jacketed rock cores during indentation tests. In addition we attached sensors to the rotating shaft of a rock bolter drill. A back propagation neural network "learned" rock fracture characteristics and rock type with 99% classification accuracy. A neural network's calibration and computational abilities suggest better acoustic emission sensor capabilities.

The bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans triggers the surface modification of sulfide minerals to provide hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity for the flotation of sphalerite and galena. The effects of initial cell concentration, period of biotreatment and pulp density on the floatability of the minerals are discussed. With galena, flotation enhancement obtained through sulfuric acid treatment was retarded by biotreatment at all cell concentrations due to chemical effects. Such a decrease occurred for sphalerite only at cell concentrations sufficiently high for bacterial attachment to the mineral surface. The variables affecting surface modification (and, thus, flotation response of the minerals) include the cell concentration used for bacterial conditioning, the period of biotreatment and the pulp density. Although bacterial growth during biotreatment was observed even in the absence of nutrients, such growth was more common in the sphalerite suspension than in the galena suspension. Cell protein estimations suggest that more cells are attached on galena than on sphalerite. Probable reaction mechanisms associated with bacterial modification are discussed.

Electrothermal production of elemental phosphorous (P4) generates substantial amounts of highly toxic phossy water and sludges. Because of their high phosphorous contents and lack of reliable processing technology, large tonnages of these hazardous wastes have accumulated from current and past operations. To date, the sludges are stored in ponds or above ground in special containment vessels at various locations around the country. Two samples of electric furnace phosphorous sludge (obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, AL and FMC Corporation in Pocatello, ID) were investigated using physical separation techniques to recover the elemental phosphorous and to render the residual material nonhazardous. The techniques tested include sizing, froth flotation and dispersed air oxidation. Flotation and sizing produced concentrates containing 69% - 90%P4, with recovery in the range of 60% - 87%. Dispersed air oxidation of the fines and tailings products was effective in the removal of an additional 10% - 15% of the P4 in the sludge.

The hydrometallurgy review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. 1992 was not a banner year for hydrometallurgical installations or new hydrometallurgical developments. Installation of copper solvent extraction/electrowinning circuits were under construction or began operation in Nevada (Yerrington ), Arizona (SilverBell), Chile (Copiapo and Escondida), Peru (Toquepala and Cuayone) and Australia (Girilambone). These installations will produce more than 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of cathode copper. Several new heap leach gold facilities using conventional technologies were announced or were put into operation. New technologies undergoing widespread testing include biological oxidation of low-grade ores in a heap leach mode and evaluation of new agglomerating agents.

In 1992, the United States economy grew at a rate of 2%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $5,946 billion. With 257 million people - 635,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose I 1 % to 1.2 million units. New car production rose 4% to 5.7 million units. Truck and bus production rose 20% to 4 million units. The rate of inflation was 3.5% and the prime rate of interest was 6.25%. The Producer Price Index (1982 =100) was relatively unchanged from 1991 as follows: fuels and related products and power 80, metals and metal products 119, chemicals and allied products 126 and nonmetallic mineral products 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, rose 3% to 455 Mm3 (2.9 billion bbl). Domestic petroleum production fell 1 % to 582 Mm3 (3.5 billion bbl). Petroleum supplied about 41 % of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 23%. Coal production, 60% from surface operations, rose 1 % to 914 Mt (1 billion st). About 78% was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked. Exports valued at $4 billion included 57 Mt (63 million st) of metallurgical coal and 39 Mt (43 million st) of steam coal. Ura¬nium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 18% to 3 kt (3300 st) U308.

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunnels of the Abu-Tartour project in Egypt create blocks of irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Although most of these blocks are unable to move into the free space of the tunnel, a few key blocks are capable of such movement. In addition, as soon as they move, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the removable key blocks of the walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks and then determine the best tunnel direction.

During the first fifteen years of operation at the Syncrude facility in northern Alberta, numerous improvements have been made in the field of ore conveying. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about with the use of detailed field evaluation. This paper outlines some of the programs which have been run to optimise belt and system construction, and conveyor performance and utilization.

The development and scale up of hydrothermal synthesis processes for manufacture of high performance materials is discussed. Traditional hydrometallurgical processes are reviewed, leading into a discussion of process development concerns for manufacture of modern materials. Three case studies are presented, including a piezoelectric ceramic, barium titanate for multiyear capacitors, and high purity chromium metal. Factors for selection of reactor design are presented, as well as results of scale-up studies on the three products.

The gold price declined for the second year in a row, averaging $11.05/g ($343.76/ oz), 5.2% lower than the $11.65/g ($362.44/oz) seen in 1991. In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. This paper discusses the fundamental strategies adopted in the simulation package FIRES developed for ventilation simulation under mine fires. These fundamental strategies include (1) fire characteristic curves specifying the development of a mine fire with time, (2) simulation of fume spread in a ventilation system, (3) determination of the aerodynamic effects of mine fires on flows; and (4) dynamic simulation of flow state under mine fires. The major functions of the simulation package are also addressed. The package has been used to simulate an experiment of mine fire. A comparison is made between the simulation results and the measured data.
