It is common in coal-cleaning operations to produce a fine waste stream which contains a considerable amount of coal, but which is not economical to recover both because it is mixed with large amounts of difficult-to-remove clay slimes, and because the fines are often heavily oxidized. Conventional froth flotation machines cannot produce an acceptable product from such material in a single stage of flotation, and even flotation columns often have difficulty cleaning this type of feed. A new type of flotation column was designed specifically to deal with these problems, and was installed and tested in a coal-cleaning plant in Ohio. The feed coal contained 39.8% ash as fine clay, and 2.83% total sulfur, and was 80% passing 176 micrometers. The coal was a thickener product which had oxidized for some time, and was very difficult to float. However, using the new column it was possible to recover up to 85% of the calorific value in a product containing less than 11% ash, and up to 60% of the calorific value in a product of less that 8% ash. The bulk of the pyritic sulfur was rejected from the coal as well. Multistage flotation tests showed that the flotation column was able, in a single stage, to produce the best froth flotation product that it was possible to recover from this coal.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. The modern drilling fluids industry is a dynamic, evolutionary environment. It is continuously striving to satisfy and anticipate the ever-changing needs of the oil and gas industry. The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

A review of the advantages and disadvantages of plasma technology for metal and mineral wastes is presented. Examples of the use of plasma systems are given and possible future uses are outlined. Among the potential uses are treatment of electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts, the vitrification of nuclear wastes and the removal of toxic metals. Over the past few decades, plasma technology has been studied for potential applications over a wide range of metals/materials processing areas. One promising area of plasma technology applications is the treatment of industrial hazardous waste. The potential generation of hazardous and toxic waste by various industries has become a matter of public and political awareness. Environmental regulations have put stringent toxicity emission limits on disposable waste streams. An intensive research effort is currently underway in the area of hazardous waste treatment.

In the Spring of 1991, Georgia Marble Company of Arizona (GMCOA), acquired the Andrada Marble Company located near Vail, Arizona, approximately 32 km southeast of Tucson. The Georgia Marble Company operation consists of an open pit quarry and a recently constructed, state of the art calcium carbonate milling and processing facility. The open pit quarry exposes white, crystalline, CaCO3, Escabrosa limestone that meets our customer criteria for Consumer and Industrial Filler applications. The Georgia Marble Company Arizona Division facility is designed and engineered to produce a wide range of milled calcium carbonate that includes finely ground and coarse screened products.

Tripoli and the related mineral commodities such as micro- crystalline silica have been mined for more than 100 years for their abrasive properties. Although abrasive and buffing compound markets are still very important, within the last 15 years the filler and extender markets in paint, plastics, rubber, adhesives, and sealants have increased substantially. Tripoli or microcrystalline silica consists almost entirely of very small quartz crystals, many less than one micrometer in length. Material mined from different districts differs in crystal shape, grain size, and texture of the rock, all of which influence markets. Most US deposits are now mined by surface methods, and both air floated and micronized products are marketed. Deposits of tripoli now mined in the United States occur in chert-bearing Paleozoic limestone in the central part of the country with producing districts in southern Illinois, central Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma. Although deposits within each district are confined to specific formations and extend laterally within those formations, individual bodies form minable deposits that are typically several hectares in areal extent. Tripoli is white to cream to rose and characterized by high porosity and ease of disaggregation. DEFINITIONS Tripoli In the United States, tripoli was first used to describe the fine-grained, easily disaggregated material from Seneca, MO, be- cause of its similarity to a rock from the Tripoli region of North Africa (Hovey, 1894). The North African rock is actually diatomaceous earth, a material that is similar in appearance to the rock from Seneca, but is of entirely different origin having formed by the accumulation of siliceous remains of microscopic marine or fresh- water animals. Tripoli is best defined as a very fine-grained, generally porous rock that consists of microcrystalline quartz, typically formed by the alteration of a chert-bearing limestone. Tripolite A term used to describe a rock from the vicinity of Tripoli in North Africa which is diatomaceous earth (Quirk and Bates, 1978) Microcrystalline Silica Microcrystalline silica is the same material as tripoli, but the distinction between the use of these two names is dictated largely by convention and markets. Material produced from southern I1linois deposits and used in white pigment and filler applications is generally referred to as microcrystalline silica, whereas that used in abrasive applications, both from the Illinois district and from other states, is commonly called tripoli. Amorphous Silica Amorphous silica, a term formerly used to describe the material produced from the deposits in southern Illinois, is now replaced by the term microcrystalline silica. Amorphous silica came into use when even optical methods for the identification of very fine- grained quartz were not widely available and the Illinois product, composed of quartz grains too small to be seen with the unaided eye, was thought to consist of amorphous silica. The Illinois material is clearly crystalline quartz, as shown by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy (Fig. 1). Novaculite Although originally used to describe a rock suitable for the manufacture of whetstones, novaculite is now defined more generally " - as a homogeneous, mostly white or light colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a waxy or dull luster, and almost entirely composed of microcrystalline quartz" (Steuart et al., 1983). The more compact rock mined in central Arkansas from the Arkansas Novaculite is referred to as novaculite, whereas the more porous rock is referred to as tripoli. Rottenstone The commodity rottenstone is sometimes included within the general mineral commodity category of tripoli. Rottenstone is mined in Northumberland County in eastern Pennsvlvania and formed by the weathering of a siliceous shale of Devonian age (Faill, 1979, Berkheiser, private communication, 1991). This material is used as a filler and extender, but is apparently unlike tripoli both in origin and physical properties. Spiculite Spiculite is a rock consisting of siliceous sponge spicules having formed by the removal by solution of the carbonate matrix of a spicule-bearing limestone. Spiculite has been mined in Texas and, because it resembles tripoli in several aspects, is included in the discussion of deposits.

Optimal gold recoveries largely depend on efficient liberation of the gold or gold-bearing minerals as well as on maximum access for the lixiviant. Thus, crushing and grinding may become the most costly part of gold ore processing. It may, in fact, represent 50% to 70% of a plant's operating costs (Michaelis, 1989). The increasing significance of refractory gold will require even more cost-efficient comminution of ultrafine sulfides and/or native gold. Transitional ore zones with semi refractory gold may respond to direct leaching if better particle fracturing is being achieved (Baum, 1991, 1993a). Many oxide ores have been left in the ground because they were unsuitable for heap leaching since conventional comminution could not facilitate economic gold extraction. Also, the costs of conventional bal1 mill operations did not permit the recovery of gold from many ultrafine, low-grade refractory ores. As shown by Marsden et al. (1993), the trend to treat ores with progressively lower grades will involve power-and leach-efficient grinding applications. Our current laboratory work shows that high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) Polycom grinding may enable many mining companies to add large amounts of these "non-leachable" ores to their current heap or mill leach feeds. This finding may dramatically change the economics of many oxide gold ore operations and may add significant reserves to ores amenable to direct cyanidation.

Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

Most electric motor predictive maintenance methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness in the mining environment. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an alternative approach to detect winding insulation breakdown in advance of complete motor failure. In order to evaluate the analysis algorithms necessary for this approach, the USBM has designed and installed a system to monitor 120 electric motors in a coal preparation plant. The computer-based experimental system continuously gathers, stores, and analyzes electrical parameters for each motor. The results are then correlated to data from conventional motor-maintenance methods and in-service failures to determine if the analysis algorithms can detect signs of insulation deterioration and impending failure. This paper describes system design and implementation. At this writing, however, installation is still underway, and field data analysis results are not yet available.

Nepheline syenite is a light-colored feldspathic rock that is used primarily as an addition to the glass batch. It is also used in ceramics and as an industrial filler. Composed essentially of the soda and potash feldspars and nepheline, nepheline syenite contributes needed alkalis and alumina to the glass composition. And because it contains a higher proportion of these oxides per unit weight, it is a formidable competitor for feldspar in northeastern North America and parts of western Europe. Nepheline-bearing rocks are not uncommon on a world scale, but few are able to be beneficiated to a composition sufficiently low in iron to be used in the making of glass. Nepheline can only form in an environment deficient in silica. Hence free silica, as quartz, is always absent in the primary mineral assemblage. Biotite, hornblende and magnetite are usually present as minor accessory minerals, and zircon, garnet, muscovite, and apatite may be present as trace minerals. Nepheline syenite is produced for glass, ceramics, and filler markets by Unimin Canada Limited at Blue Mountain, in south- eastern Ontario. Unimin acquired the former Indusmin and IMC properties from Falconbridge Ltd. in 1990. Elkem Nefelin AIS commenced production of similar products from Stjernoy Island in northern Norway in 1961. Unimin acquired this company in 1992. Nepheline has also been a byproduct of apatite mining on the Kola Peninsula for many years, and in 1951 the production of alumina from nepheline was commenced in a plant near St. Petersburg (Leningrad). There are now four plants in the Russian Republic, two smaller ones based on nepheline tailings from apatite mining and two larger and more recent plants in central Siberia using other nepheline resources. All four of these plants are integrated complexes that produce alumina for the subsequent production of aluminum metal, sodium and potassium carbonates, and portland cement. Roofing granules are produced by the 3M Company from a nepheline rock in Arkansas. In 1980 and 1989, trial shipments of nepheline syenite were recorded from new sources in Brazil and western Turkey respectively. Recent interest is also recorded for deposits in China, Saudi Arabia, and British Columbia.

The term bentonite was first proposed in 1898 by Knight, a year after he had named this clay taylorite, because taylorite had been previously used for another mineral. The name taylorite was after the Taylor ranch, the site of the first mine, near Rock River, WY, and the name bentonite is from the Benton Shale in which the clay was thought at that time to occur. The Benton Shale was, in turn, named after Fort Benton, MT, located more than 640 km miles north of Rock River. Early in the 20th century, several geologists recognized that bentonite, mainly in beds in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks, originated from transported volcanic materials. This recognition led to definitions based on origin, the one most widely quoted and generally accepted by geologists is the following definition by Ross and Shannon (1926): "Bentonite is a rock composed essentially of a crystalline clay-like mineral formed by devitrification and the accompanying chemical alteration of a glassy igneous material, usually a tuff or volcanic ash; and it often contains variable proportions of accessory crystal grains that were originally phenocrysts in the volcanic glass. These are feldspar (commonly orthoclase and oligoclase), biotite, quartz, pyroxenes, zircon, and various other minerals typical of volcanic rocks. The characteristic clay-like mineral has a micaceous habit and facile cleavage, high birefringence and a texture inherited from volcanic tuff or ash, and it is usually the mineral montmorillonite, but less often beidellite." The difficulty in applying the foregoing definition to bentonite as an industrial mineral commodity is that it is based on origin and is restricted to an ash, tuff, or volcanic glass parent material. Therefore, deposits consisting of the clay minerals required by this definition, but having uncertain origin or parent materials, cannot properly be called bentonite. Furthermore, many deposits in the western United States and in other countries that have formed from rocks other than the types required by the definition are being mined and sold as bentonite. Perhaps the best definition of bentonite as an industrial mineral is one given by R.E. Grim in a plenary lecture at the International Clay Conference (AIPEA) at Madrid, Spain, June 27, 1972. According to this redefinition, which will be used in this chapter, bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of smectite minerals (montmorillonite group of some usages), regardless of origin or occurrence. This definition solves the problem of the difference between the geologic and industrial usages of the term and overcomes the difficulty in assigning a name to smectite clay that formed from igneous rock other than ash, tuff, or glass, or those of sedimentary or uncertain origin. However, bentonite, when used with this meaning is still a rock term (consisting of more than one mineral), and it will not be possible to distinguish it from fuller's earth in many instances. One way of classifying bentonite is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium (Na+) as either the dominant or as an abundant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium (Ca++) is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling capacities than sodium varieties. Some calcium types swell little more than common clay, and most crumble into granular masses in water. Intermediate calcium-sodium bentonites, the so called mixed types, tend to swell moderately and to form gels of lesser volumes than equal masses of the sodium type bentonite. Because of the general relationship of swelling and exchangeable ion characteristics bentonite is commonly divided into the high swelling or sodium, low swelling or calcium, and moderate swelling or intermediate types. The term sub-bentonite (Davis et a]., 1940) is used inconsistently in industry for the low or moderate swelling varieties. The authors believe the use of this term should be discouraged because of its implication of low quality or low value and the lack of a mineralogical or use basis for it. In the United States bentonite is also classified by geographic location and the uses for which it is sold. Inasmuch as most of the low swelling calcium type occurs in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, this variety is commonly called Southern bentonite. The largest high swelling sodium bentonite deposits and the major producing districts are in Wyoming and adjacent states. Therefore, this bentonite is commonly called the Wyoming or Western type. Such terms as drilling mud bentonite, foundry bond bentonite, and taconite bond bentonite relating directly to use are applied in marketing. Other terms including high and low yield bentonite, high and low gel bentonite, and high and low strength bentonite are also used to distinguish different grades. The varied classifications notwithstanding, bentonite occurs in so many different varieties that some cannot logically be classified according to any of the foregoing groupings. One of these types is hectorite, which is a high swelling lithium-bearing variety of smectite occurring mainly in California and adjacent states. It is, therefore, not a Wyoming type, and it occurs even farther west than the so called western bentonites. Others are bentonites having magnesium (Mg++) or hydrogen (H+) as the most abundant or dominant exchangeable ion. These types are neither sodium nor calcium varieties, and apparently some are low swelling, whereas others have rather high swelling capacities. The two calcium sulfate minerals, gypsum and anhydrite, occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO, . 2H20) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO,) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the larger part of total calcium sulfate resources. Although it has very minor economic use, it is important to the understanding of gypsum deposits and is referred to frequently in the following discussion. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [ ] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have not yet been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. Most gypsum produced ranges from 80 to 95% pure and beneficiation is normally limited to selective mining or quarrying or upgrading by crushing and screening during mill processing. END USES The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris, the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ½ H2O), which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the stable dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uses of uncalcined gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in other countries with building practices different from those in the United States and Canada, relative usage varies widely. Calcium sulfate deposits are the world's largest sulfur resources; minor quantities of gypsum and anhydrite have been used to produce sulfur or sulfur compounds. This use is accompanied by a unique site-specific set of economics because sulfur is generally available from non-gypsum sources at lower cost.

Metal ions associated with effluent streams pose an increasing environmental problem for the mineral industry. Various techniques currently in use to combat this problem including bioremediation, chemical precipitation, and ion exchange are reviewed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages discussed. An alternative technique for metal ion removal, adsorption on surface modified alumina substrates is presented. Alumina surfaces were modified by adsorption of organofunctional silanes, and metal ion removal occurs by chelation of the ion by the adsorbed silane molecules. Experimental data is presented for the removal of cupric ions by this method and is compared to cupric ion removal by adsorption on alumina without prior surface modification.

Mining in Mexico has an immensely long tradition. In his first letter reporting to his sovereigns from Mexico in July 1519, Hernan Cortes wrote, "To our mind it is probable that this land contains as many riches as that from which Solomon is said to have obtained the gold for the temple ... " 1 But not only precious metals drew his attention; in 1524, short of tin needed for casting guns, he found it in Taxco. As an added bonus, those who went to find it "came upon a vein of iron which according to experts is of exceeding richness." 2 Since then, the mines of Mexico have yielded up enormous amounts of mineral and continue to do so. Mexico is one of the ten principal producers of minerals world-wide both in production volume and diversity. 3 Tens of thousands of tons of iron, sulphur, and coal come from its earth annually; it is the world's second largest producer of barite; third of antimony, fluorite, and graphite. 4 Copper, zinc, silver, molybdenum, arsenic and cadmium and others are wrested from its mines. The wealth is there; but maximizing its potential requires investment, technology, and markets that the government cannot itself provide. Thus mining, since the Mexican Revolution severely restricted by both law and policy, today looks to private investment to develop its potential. Beginning in 1989, Mexico's government cautiously moved to liberalize private sector involvement in mining; 5 using the experience gained from these initial regulatory changes, the current new Mining Law was adopted in 1992 6 and new Regulations were promulgated in 1993. 7

Much has been published lately about the application of advanced control strategies in the automatic control of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits. The application of adaptive control algorithms, self-tuning controllers, state estimation, and expert systems has been well documented. While these approaches can be very effective; experience has shown that quite often simply "fixing the fundamentals" can have a significant positive impact on overall grinding circuit performance. This paper will highlight the results of process optimization and process control work by the authors at a variety of autogenous and semi-autogenous installations. A review of one approach for quantifying the mill load/bearing pressure/power relationship is provided. Accurate monitoring of key mill process variables is a necessary prerequisite for both effective process analysis and process control. This paper discusses some of the concerns related to defining steady state operating conditions and the issues related to signal conditioning. The paper concludes with a discussion of an effective application of algorithmic constraint control which incorporates many of these considerations.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain project, Nevada.

New Mexico produced 83% of domestic potash and 27% of domestic consumption in 1992. The potash industry of New Mexico produces sylvite (KCI), langbeinite (K2SO4-2Mg(SO4)2), and artificial K2SO4. Average sylvite grade in New Mexico today is about 14%. The average grade of langbeinite is 8-10% Kp. Commercial potash occurs in the middle or McNutt Member of the Salado Formation (Upper Permian Ochoan Series). The 120-m-thick McNutt Member dips about 1° east and contains 11 of 12 potential ore zones in the Salado. The mineralogy and proportion of clay minerals, up to 7% of the ore, influence optimum milling procedures and ore grade cutoff.
