Recent regulatory changes in the United States make it mandatory to conduct structural analysis of coal mine seals used to isolate abandoned workings from active mining areas. Different loading criteria are available for seal design depending on whether gob composition is actively monitored and maintained or not and whether the gob conditions lead to deflagration or detonation type loading. Since the loads involved in seal designs are dynamic in nature, the structural analysis must be made using dynamic stress analysis techniques. However, because of the significant complexities involved in conducting dynamic analyses, some designers use approximate simplified techniques to address the design problem. In this paper two such simplified methods are critically evaluated for their suitability to design coal mine seals. The benefits and limitations of the simplified methods are also outlined. Some comparisons are made to show the differences between sophisticated three dimensional dynamic analyses and the simplified methods and to delineate the problems associated with the latter approaches.

Wireless technology is a hot topic for anyone involved in the design, operation, maintenance or upgrading of mines or mineral processing plants because wireless technologies overcome barriers that have prevented many useful data inputs. Wireless communications can contribute to worker safety, satisfy environmental concerns, support plant security, track human and physical assets, and improve equipment maintenance. The cost structure of wireless is compelling and users can realize savings ? up to 90 percent less installed cost than wired instruments ? since wireless technology eliminates the need for expenses associated with cabling, engineering, construction and documentation. Many applications previously considered too expensive have become economically feasible with wireless. Two examples are continuous monitoring of safety showers to notify operators when one has been activated, and monitoring effluents to ensure environmental regulations are being met. In many cases, wireless transmitters can be installed where wired devices were too expensive to justify, or were not feasible due to physical or technical barriers. Examples include monitoring temperature measurements inside a rotating reactor or monitoring process variables in a tough, corrosive environment too challenging for a wired solution. Wireless also gives operating personnel mobility with the ability to communicate from remote or hard-to-reach zones. According to a recent Venture Development Corp. survey covering radio frequency (RF) of microwave industrial monitoring and control products, these features are contributing to the expected nationwide growth rate for industrial wireless applications of 19 percent annually from 2007 to 2012 (Taylor, 2008). At the same time, mineral producers have many questions about wireless systems including their applicability, reliability and security in this industry. Just what can wireless do? Is it secure and reliable? Can these instruments stand up to the rigors of the industry? Can wire-less technology provide the flexibility needed for mining applications?

Minerales Monclova S.A. de C.V. (MIMOSA) has applied different methane gas drainage technologies, according to the top industry requirements in order to keep the methane gas at the lowest possible concentration in our operations, both in the development sections and longwall sections. Our staff has used the horizontal rotary technique. In 2004 MIMOSA bought a re-built drill machine and signed a contract with Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI), which included a training program in Horizontal Directional Drilling using the reflex system. The training system was developed for a period of three months in Mine VII, with very good performance by the MIMOSA staff. After the training the equipment was moved to Esmeralda Mine, where we had already drilled holes at the development section, 2,500 ft. It was the longest distance that could be reached with our original equipment, obviously; the directional drilling program is another challenge for us and our staff, but we are very confident that our result will be better every time. We will be evaluating each borehole and expect to improve our results in each progressive borehole, until we can drill up to the capacity of the equipment. We are in the process of buying another drill with an electronic monitoring device (DD DMecca) in the following months.

Ventilation planning in trackless metal mining is often taken for granted. This paper highlights the trials of planning and executing the ventilation design for Bog Zone at the Lisheen Mine. Ventilation planning for Bog Zone started at the feasibility study stage in 2003; subsequent design changes continued until 2006. In August 2006, the development of the Bog Zone ore body was accelerated through the use of contractors; in addition, the Lisheen equipment fleet was revised based on a larger load and haul fleet. As a result, the circuit was reviewed in terms of changes in design conditions and best practices. This review resulted in a 40% increase of total airflow required to mine Bog Zone. Resources utilized to design the circuit include: external review, computer modeling, and in-house Lisheen planning and operational staff review. The final ventilation design configuration was adopted in 2007, after modeling and evaluating 30 different scenarios, resulting in a better distribution of airflow, optimized secondary escape way, reduced contaminants, and a total power reduction. The value of investment in computer modeling of primary ventilation circuit and planning for staged implementation should never be underestimated.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. Coal dust explosions in underground coal mines are prevented by generous application of rock dust (usually limestone). If an explosion should occur, the rock dust disperses, mixes with the coal dust and prevents flame propagation by acting as a thermal inhibitor or heat sink. To investigate this process in more detail, a number of explosion experiments using various coal dust and limestone rock dust mixes have been carried out at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). These were conducted in a single entry of about 1600 ft (488m) in length and initiated with a methane gas explosion. A consistent set of post-explosion floor dust samples were taken along the entry after each test. These dust samples have been analyzed in the laboratory using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and solubility to determine how the limestone rock dust behaved during the coal dust / rock dust explosions. The preliminary results are reported in this paper and indicate that the chemistry of limestone plays an important role in its capacity to inhibit coal dust explosions. The results also show that it may be possible to estimate the intensity of the explosion using these conventional methods of analysis. Perimeter mining is a special form of very productive partial extraction method practiced at some mines in the United States. In the Illinois Basin mines where all major coal seams have weak underclay in the immediate floor, experience shows that any long-term ground control issues will arise due to floor failures rather than instability of the coal pillar itself. While there is a significant amount of work done on floor stability associated with regular pillars, no work has been done so far on the stability of perimeter pillars. This paper reports the results of a comprehensive study that was conducted for the first time on floor stability during perimeter mining in the Illinois Basin mines. A special plate template, which mimicked a common perimeter pillar configuration was created to conduct in-situ bearing capacity tests at five mines in three states of the Basin. Additionally, because of the complex shape of pillars created in perimeter mining that defies any closed-form solution, floor bearing capacity was studied using three-dimensional nonlinear numerical modeling. Based on these in-situ and numerical studies, some guidelines are provided for perimeter pillar stability analysis.

Underground roof falls can have devastating effects on the safety of operations personnel, and equipment, and seriously impact production. Immediate steps are usually taken to danger off and secure the area while clean-up efforts are designed and implemented. A critical step, often overlooked due to production demand, is the determination of - why the roof fall occurred so that additional occurrences can be avoided in future developments or what measures can be taken to identify areas that have similar ?symptoms?? Forensic engineering includes the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate/function as intended. The authors define forensics in ground control engineering as the study of evidence discovered while examining underground roof falls by applying expert observational techniques and established mining engineering principles to determine the probable cause, hypothesize solutions, and design engineering safeguards to prevent reoccurrences. Simply stated, the primary steps in the forensics of underground roof fall techniques are: ?Assess regional and local conditions prior to the event. ? Assess post-event conditions. ? Hypothesize plausible ways in which the pre-event conditions became the post-event conditions. ?Search for evidence that either denies or supports the various hypotheses. ?Apply engineering skill to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred. This paper details the proposed technique by utilizing a roof fall case study that required the examination of five primary factors: mine design parameters, excavation geology, method of excavation, method of support, and mining cycle times.

The ventilation measurements by tracer gas method at Pongkor gold mine show that effective diffusion coefficient, E, at straight airways indicated a similar range of measured one by the laboratory experiments which can be estimated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, E of the curved airways in the mine was estimated as larger than that of the straight ones (1.5 to 32 times than that obtained by the Taylor equation and these have been compared with the data measured in Kushiro coal mine, Japan). The curved mine airways, with small curvature against airway radius and complex velocity profile, possibly give concentration ? time curves with long tailings, thus those airway conditions could make larger E. Laboratory experiments of gas diffusion by a pulsed injection of small amount gas, into straight and curved airways, have been conducted in order to investigate a range of E in mine airways. The plots of E against Reynolds number show that the present laboratory results of straight-long airways are almost close to one calculated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, the values of E measured at curved single-direction airways were smaller than that of the straight airways, which may be due to effects by secondary vortexes flow in the curved airways.

Parameter estimation of the inverse distance estimation algorithm is presented. The objective function to be minimized is a sum of squared cross validation errors. The unknowns to be estimated are the exponent of the inverse distance estimator and anisotropic angles and ratios that are used in determining the distances in the algorithm. Examples are presented for both two and three dimensions data sets.

Point load strength (Is50) and slake durability (ID2) indices provide a measure of the strength and durability of rock fragments and are related to the alteration intensity and frictional resistance of the materials. Samples were collected from the rock piles, alteration scars and debris flows at the Questa mine with the purpose of examining relationships between Is50 and ID2, mineralogy, chemistry, weathering, hydrothermal alteration, and other geotechnical parameters. The Is50 from the various rock piles ranges from 0.6-8.2 MPa and the ID2 ranges from 80.9-99.5%. The Is50 and ID2 results indicate that the samples from the debris flows are stronger (average Is50= 4.0 MPa and ID2= 98.4%) than the rock-pile samples and that the alteration scar samples are weaker (average Is50 = 2.8 MPa and ID2 = 89.2%) than the rock-pile samples, but still most of these rocks are strong in terms of their Is50 and ID2. The Is50 decreases as the degree of alteration increases in some rock pile and alteration scar samples, but not in all. However, the majority of the rock fragments within the rock piles still indicate high strength, even after 25-40 years of weathering.

In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

The shape of particles has a significant effect on the shear strength and deformational characteristics of granular materials. Weathering can change the grain shapes. For example, more weathered sands tend to be rounder regardless of particle size. Particle shape analysis was performed on samples collected from the Questa mine rock piles, a debris flow and the pit alteration scar. In order to increase the validity of the particle shape analysis, 4 persons including 2 geologists and 2 mining engineers were involved in describing the particle shapes. The results of this analysis indicate that rock fragments in the collected samples are mainly subangular, subdiscoidal and subprismoidal. The sphericity and angularity of the rock fragments of the older analogs are similar to those of the rock piles. This suggests that short-term weathering (<100 years) has not noticeably changed the particle shapes at the test locations. Rock piles made of more angular particles are more stable compared to rock piles with rounded particles.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that re-entering a sealed heating poses a significant hazard, whereby the original heating is rejuvenated at an accelerated rate forcing withdrawal and re-sealing of the area. Bulk-scale laboratory experiments using a two-metre column confirm these mine site observations. A high volatile bituminous coal from New South Wales, Australia was allowed to develop a significant hot spot before being inerted with nitrogen and allowed to cool. Air was then allowed back into the coal after the nitrogen was turned off and a hot spot developed almost immediately at the same location as the original hot spot before it quickly migrated towards the air source within a day. Two more re-entries were simulated. Each successive re-entry developed a broader hot spot and took longer to reach thermal runaway. These results clearly show the behaviour that can be expected when trying to recover a section of an underground coal mine that has been sealed due to a spontaneous combustion event.

In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.
