The Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanism of shear-flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear-flocculation of silica was not observed with up to 10-4M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations 10-4 M (5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labelled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labelling group did not greatly affect the shear-flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labelled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicate the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-414 (5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear-flocculation.

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

The exploration for a commercially acceptable deposit of limestone is consid¬ered by many to be a relatively easy task; however, trying to locate a zone of high calcium limestone of economic thickness within a formation, which outcrops only in a narrow band varying in width from a quarter mile to ten miles, adds considerably to the normal problems experienced during an exploration program. The existence of varying glacial and karst features in the outcrop area intensified the problems encountered and complicated the interpretation of the economic value of the deposit. This paper highlights a recently completed five year exploration program during which approximately 3,900 acres of ground in seven civil townships were evaluated as potential sources of high-calcium limestone. Details are given with respect to the final site chosen and the methods used in determining the suitability of the site. This site exhibited many karat features and several methods were utilized to determine the effect of these features on the gross characteristics of the deposit. Aerial photography for both mapping and interpretation were utilized. Black and white panchromatic photography, black and white infrared and color infrared photography were flown. Resistivity, diamond core drilling and close-interval angering were used to supplement the information obtained from the aerial photography.

The suggestion of the use of measurements of trace amounts of mercury as a guide to the location of sulphide ore deposits was first made by the Russian, A. A. Saukov (1), in 1.946. Since Saukov's original work, many others have studied the abundance of mercury in nature, the association of mercury with sulphide ores and methods by which very minute quantities of mercury can be measured in air, soil, rocks, water and plants. The most abundant of the mercury bearing minerals is cinnabar (HgS). Native mercury is also found and sulpha-salts like tetrahedrite are known to have important mercury contents. Other sulphides of base metal deposits contain mercury in amounts ranging from parts per million to as much as one or two percent. (2) The mercury content of sulphide-free rocks is usually less than a few hundred parts per billion (1 ppb - 10-9), Soils usually contain less than 100 ppb and water less than 1 ppb of mercury. Normal atmospheric air contains about 1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of Hg per cubic metre although higher concentrations can be observed near mercury occurrences, sulphide deposits and volcanic exhalations.

Deep "paste" thickeners have been used in the alumina industry for several decades to improve chemical recovery and allow “stacking” of the red mud for disposal. These paste systems have eliminated many traditional tailings ponds in addition to providing better tails washing and better water recovery. This technology is not widely used or understood in other mineral processing applications. However, there is growing worldwide recognition of the advantages of concentrating mill tailings to a “paste”, i.e. a solid suspension that does not settle or segregate. This technology offers several alternatives to the traditional tailings pond such as “stacking” or mine backfill. More water recovery is possible than with high rate thickeners. Process benefits come in the form of better chemical and metals recovery through better washing in counter current decantation (CCD) applications. Obtaining a true paste (non-segregating suspension which exhibits a yield stress) and understanding the handling characteristics for applications outside alumina, are recent developments. Achieving all of the benefits available from a paste system requires careful design that takes into account the specific requirements of the disposal application along with the peculiar difficulties in producing and handling paste. In fact, design of a paste system is markedly different from a conventional system. Project design usually requires the cooperation of experts in several interrelated specialties including geotechnical, thickener design, pumping and discharge design and controls. A successful project must coordinate all activities to ensure that the overall objectives for the project are achieved. This paper describes the properties of paste, reviews the applications, and discusses the design of a complete paste deposition system.

The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). Caving mining methods that are based on a planned caving of rock above and/or at times surrounding the material being mined can be classified in three broad categories: longwall mining, sublevel caving, and block caving. Each of the three methods involves a distinct technology as well as art of operation. Each requires a relatively large, regular, and predictable ore body. As a rule, the effect of mining results in some form of impact or change on the surface. Operationally, underground caving methods are characterized by high productivity as well as a high percentage of extraction of the mineral being mined. A key element for the productivity of this form of mining is the ability to standardize the various elements of work taking place underground. Therefore, work-men may perform a specialized role rather than function as all-around miners. Further, the nature of the mining methods lend them to a high level of mechanization. Operations and manpower can be centralized into a relatively small area where supervision can be concentrated and therefore be more effective. Productivity as well as safety benefits thereby. The caving method is unique in that the exploitation openings are deliberately destroyed by the process of mining. Rock mechanics principles focus on the ensurance and the propagation of the cave as well as the continuance of the mine openings designed to extract the broken ore. As a rule, production operations are designed to maintain a steady, continuous flow of ore from the extraction areas. This steady flow rather than an intermittent flow tends to promote good caving action as well as reduce hangups.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

The materials used for the construction of buildings contain natural radionuclides of the U238 and Th232 series and are ? 50% due to land radioactivity. Another component of natural radioactivity is K40, with ? 40%. The presence of these radiopollutants in the final products (i.e. bricks, concrete) due to body irradiation is by two pathways: external irradiation and internal irradiation. External irradiation is due to gamma radiations emitted by Pb214 (RaB) + Bi214 (RaC) from the U238 series, by Ra228 (Mezothoriu I) + Ac228 (Mezothoriu II) + Tl208 (ThC??) from the Th232 series and by the K40 radionuclide. Internal irradiation is due to inhalation of radon (Rn222) and Rn220 (Tn) plus short life descendents (Po, Pb, Bi), radionuclides which are present in concrete. A fraction from radon present in concrete enters into a house leading to internal irradiation by inhalation. In Romania, the maximum concentration of radon allowed for new buildings is 200 Bq/m3.

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. In 1979, TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed plans for a 20-MW AFBC pilot plant, a 10-fold scale-up over the next largest test facility. The impact of environmental regulations on the quality of tunnel groundwater discharges is examined in this paper. Tunnel contractors usually depend on specialty contractors or outside consultants to deal with this issue without carefully examining their activities to minimize the production of contaminants. This approach may not be adequate given increasingly more restrictive environmental requirements. This paper surveys the general practice of the tunneling industry and attempts to identify sources of contaminants which may affect the total suspended solids, oil and grease content, and pH of the discharges. Strategies for treating the discharges are included. Field data and observations from several tunneling projects are also presented.

Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

Never increase, reduce, or remove ventilation without unquestionable, compelling reasons. This rule applies every day as well as when fighting fire, attempting to find survivors, or recovering the mine. Right now in some mine a miner is adjusting a regulator in one place to get more air into another. The chances are the desired result will be achieved. Has the miner done a good thing? NO! Solving the immediate problem reinforces the belief he or she can do it again. That "again" might be, to give but one of many examples, the explosion in Greenwich No. 1 Mine. Robbing the proverbial Peter can be the prelude to disaster in a mine. Reducing the airflow is a common practice when fighting a mine fire. In fact, some people have been taught to do that at MSHA's academy. People who believe that to be proper must be people who never experienced a fire. To fight most fires you have to scramble to get enough air. An explosion demands totally different "thinking". If people are soon to go into the mine, DON'T adjust the ventilation. If teams are in the mine, each affected area must be explored or sealed before making any ventilation change.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. The Late Paleocene–Middle Eocene phosphate nodules of Solan District of Himachal Pradesh belong to green facies of Subathu Formation of Sirmur group. Field observations indicate sporadic distribution of phosphatic nodules in the yellow brown to rusty brown, buff-colored bleach shales. Phosphatic nodules are dull earthy to dark grayish in color and break with sharp and conchoidal surfaces. Studies of phosphatic nodules using petrological microscope, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) reveal that cryptocrystalline apatite (fluorapatite) is the dominant phosphate mineral. Silt sized silica is the dominant gangue, whereas pyrite and muscovite are present as minor gangue. The phosphate minerals occur as oolites, pellets, and cryptocrystalline apatite in the groundmass. Silica veins form a network replacing the original phosphatic matrix. Brown to brownish black color may be attributed by the organic matter in the phosphatic nodules. Completely phosphatized radiolaria and partially pyritized planktonic foraminifera are observed. There is corroboration of organic matter in the form of microbial filaments in the groundmass of apatite. The findings in the present investigation indicate that the different forms of the minerals, their texture, and distribution in the phosphatic nodules might be due to environmental vicissitudes in oxidizing to reducing conditions followed by replacement processes. Presence of microbial filaments may be due to the active role of microorganisms during the formation of these phosphatic nodules.
