"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

INTRODUCTION The placing of the monolithic concrete lining of the Bi-County water tunnel illustrates the state of the art in the materials, equipment, methods and productivity available to the industry for this type of construction. This paper describes the management and engineering rationale used by Clevecon, Inc., a subsidiary of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, in developing the concrete mix designs, the design of the specialized equipment, and the methods used in the manufacture, transport, and placing of the lining. Also discussed are the changes to the reinforcing steel design instigated to facilitate its handling and placing, as well as to enhance the quality of the lining. The intent is to bring to the attention of designers the effects certain design aspects have on the construction of reinforced concrete tunnel linings, as well as indicate the areas where research and development effort should be expended to further reduce costs for this type of construction. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bi-County Water Tunnel West is a water transmission main owned by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission of Hyattsville, Maryland. The facility was designed by A. A. Mathews Division (formerly STRAAM Engineers, Inc.) CRS Group Engineers Inc., Rockville, Maryland. It is to be utilized as the central feeder of potable water for the northern suburbs of Washington, DC, extending some 4,597 meters from a riser shaft at its western terminus to the eastern interface, with a similar tunnel which extends eastward about 5,180 meters; the majority of its length being under Interstate Highway 1-495. Introduction Economic pressures in the international marketplace have spurred advances in almost every facet of flotation. New developments have occurred in flotation chemicals, flotation machines, and in the application of automated process control technology to grinding and flotation. Many of these advances are the results of concerted efforts to apply the knowledge obtained from basic flotation research over the past 15 to 20 years, to develop industrial technology for the more efficient separation of sulfide minerals in real ores. Mining company executives and equipment manufacturers are being called on to make decisions for incorporating some of this technology into present operations. This discussion is limited to two developments now at the stage of being engineered into industrial scale operations. They are control of the electrochemical environment or redox potential of the slurry, and control of bubble size in column flotation. Potential economic impacts are noted. Froth flotation Froth flotation makes use of differences in the surface properties of finely ground minerals to obtain separation. If the mineral surface is water repellent, the mineral particle will stick at the air-water interface of a bubble and float. If a mineral surface is not naturally water repellent, a chemical collector is added to the slurry to make it so. The collector must adsorb on, and make water repellent only the mineral to be recovered, not the gangue minerals. To achieve this degree of selective adsorption, chemical modifiers may have to be added to the slurry. Modifiers include pH regulators, activators, and depressants. Electrochemical control One of the most significant developments in recent years in the area of mineral processing technology is the recognition that collector adsorption of sulfide minerals is an electrochemical process. Consequently, flotation of these minerals depends on the electrochemical or redox potential of the system. The introduction of biotechnological principles in hydrometallurgy has created new opportunities and challenges for the industry of mineral processing. During the 1950's and 608s, the mining wastes and unused complex mineral resources have been successfully treated in bacterial assisted heap and dump leaching processes, especially for the production of copper and uranium. The economic viability of bio- leaching technology lead to its world-wide acceptance by the mining industries. During the 1970's this technology grew into a more structured discipline which is called "biohydrometallurgy". Currently, bioleaching techniques are ready to be used, in addition to copper and uranium, for the extraction of cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold and silver from diverse mineral resources and for the desulfurization of certain coals. However, in a foreseeable future the biohydrometallurgical processes may be applied also for the treatment of high- grade ores and mineral concentrates using native and/or genetically engineered microorganisms.

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

In this investigation, the differences in the absorption spectra of etheramines, fatty amines and condensates, mostly present as acetates, from several suppliers are characterized by means of infrared spectrometry. Sharp differences were observed in the absorption spectra of three types of amines and derivatives. Etheramines show a characteristic and well-defined peak at 1,114 cm-1. This peak is due to the ether C-O group and differentiates etheramines from the other classes. The absence of such a peak indicates that the species is not an etheramine. The distinction between condensates and fatty amines is made by the presence of a sharp peak around 3,200 cm-1. This peak is probably due to the proximity of the N-H amine groups and C=O carbonyl groups in the amide portion of the condensate's molecule and by different and better-defined bands in the 1,800- to 1,500-cm-1 range. The flotation performance of these amines was evaluated by means of the laboratory-scale flotation of an itabirite ore. The etheramines proved to be the most effective collectors for this system. Monoamines presented better performance than diamines for the ore under investigation.

One of the highest costs associated with insitu leaching of copper is electric power. The ReGeneration Project addressed this cost issue with a research and development project for BHP Copper. The project involved the installation of a reverse pump/turbine for the removal of excessive fluid pressure and the production of useful electric power. The motivation for the project was that a reverse pump/turbine unit could not only remove the excess hydraulic pressure, but when connected to an induction .generator, would produce electric power, which could be easily connected to the local power gird, thus reducing operating costs. The project was successful in removing excess fluid pressure and producing electricity. The unit is operating today, producing useful 2,300 volt power at a rate of approximately 128 kilowatts.

Wet scrubbing of fine coal from Thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment for required clean-up of the fine particulate matter. Among then are: 1. The dust In the gases leaving the Thermal dryer cyclone-s is often extremely fine with high percentages of the total dust loading less than one (1) micron in size. 2, The flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulphur or higher. Therefore comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3. Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas e scrubber are continually being lowered while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the Thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend 4. The installation of a scrubbing system on Thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore the operating costs, that is, of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum.

Since the MINER Act of 2006, the minimum static load of in-situ underground mine seals has been increased from 20-psi to either 50-psi if monitoring is conducted or 120-psi if left unmonitored. These minimum strength requirements in seals must be designed, built, and maintained throughout the lifetime of the seal. Due to this, it has become necessary to assess the effectiveness of non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies to determine seal integrity, which in this case, are explored using sonic waves and tracer gases. Through both small and large scale testing, two NDT methods will be evaluated for their abilities to determine integrity of the seal. A sonic wave technique to observe a change in wave velocity to identify faults within the seal material. As a NDT method, tracer gases may be used as a potential indicator of a connection between both sides of the seal material through a series of faults and cracks within the material itself. This paper reviews the history of underground mine seals and discusses the overall assessment of sonic waves and tracer gases to serve as NDT methods for estimating the integrity of these seals.

The Saskatchewan ore zone strikes slightly south of East, from the Alberta border to Manitoba; and dips to the South. The conventional mines are located along a broad strike line from Saskatoon to Esterhazy-Rocanville. Nine conventional mines have developed ore bodies at a nominal depth of 915 metres (3000 ft.). One mine had developed an ore body at 1525 metres (5000 ft.) by solution mining. Mining reserves of 100 years are not unusual in this vast ore body. Most of the mines were brought on stream during the 1960s. All the conventional mines were influenced by practices developed at Carlsbad, N.M. By 1970, the industry was faced with serious over-capacity resulting in the cancellation of some projects and the introduction, by the provincial government, of the Potash Pro-rationing Regulations designed to share the available market amongst all the producers. This resulted in production rates as low as 40% of capacity. As a result, the 1970s were characterized by attempts to reduce cost, rather than improve production or processing techniques. In recent years, the plants have all been brought to full capacity, and are currently involved in a massive program of expansion, which promises a period of advancing technology.

There continues to be a certain magic attached to the word "Automation". When properly planned for, engineered, installed, and operated, the magic truly does take place - witness certain publicized mineral processing, metallurgical, and chemical plants. They operate successfully with few people, instead of previous dozens as in similar facilities not automated. Production quality has improved. Maintenance costs have been lowered. When such welcome results are achieved, it's proved to be a function of method and procedure in establishing criteria for choosing the intelligence and control systems followed by skilled choice of the specific elements used. The criteria, the bases for decision, are associated with design, construction, startup, operations, and maintenance. How to go about automating any process system to achieve the optimum profit depends on attention to all those aspects of a project. None of them can be forgotten if maximum satisfaction is to be gained. Control loops that look wonderful on an equipment. Piping, and Instrumentation diagram can suddenly turn into costly and. annoying problems in the field if there has been too little coordination of design. Panel boards that are literally works of art just before startup can become the largest of white elephants if an air header is inadequately sized and the pneumatic control circuits are sluggish. Conveyor belt replacement costs can skyrocket if a critical discharge chute far away from immediate operator attention lacks a simple yet effective clog-chute switch. Planning, execution, and followup of the work, the skills, and function of-the automating material can make any new project a success. An integrated owner contractor, producer-engineer approach is the key.

"Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

INTRODUCTION Underground mining causes disturbances of the primary state of stresses. Resulting from those disturbances a loss of stability of rocks that surround excavation may occur interrupting the production and creating life danger for the personnel. One of the manifestations of such an instability is a rock burst phenomenon which mainly occurs at great depths. From the mechanical mint of view the rock burst is a loss of stability /Filcek et a1.,1984; Pietuchow and Linkow, 1976/ due to : - quasi-static stress changes in the surrounding rocks; we will call it s seam burst , - dynamic stress changes in the surrounding rocks caused by rock shocks ; we will call it roof burst. Possibility of the rock burst occurrence Is uniquely determined by the state of stresses existing in the rock mass. In the following sections of the paper we will consider different aspects of this question. Moreover distributions of displacements and failure criteria for a coal seam at longwall mining will be defined. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Determination of the vertical stresses and displacements resulting from longwail mining will be based on the Budryk’s idea of a stress wave /Salustowicz, 1955/. The idea originates from the analysis of a roof plate /beam/ resting on the deformable foundation /Sean/ and subjected to the cylindrical bending. Equation of the bending lice uniquely defines vertical stresses and displacements which are induced in the seam. The equation will account only the shear force effect. The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media is investigated by the Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through rubblization. By producing a maximum block diameter of 4 m, injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling method must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling scooptrams at the loading pockets. These were abandoned in favor of sampling production blast holes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

Most of the mines in Sweden are metal ore mines in hard rock and none of these mines are classed gassy because there is no methane emission. The risk of methane explosions in Swedish mines is therefore very small. Since the 1960?s, in Swedish mines, there has been a change from electric and pneumatic loaders and transport machines to diesel. Today in almost all Swedish underground mines diesels are used. One of the most common complaint from the underground mine- workers is the exhaust gases from the diesel-vehicles. This is a strong motive for attempts to assure a more comfortable environment. Another motive for a better efficiency of ventilation under ground is the increasing cost of energy for fans and for heating the air during winter. For the largest mine in Sweden, the Kiirunavaara Mine, 36% of the energy for ventilation is used for preheating the air during the seven months when the temperature is below zero. The air quantities used for ventilation are large. In table 1 a comparison of the ratio between yearly produced ore and waste rock and installed fresh 'air capacity is shown. [ ]

Environmental regulations have become a decisive factor for many minerals industry operations. Managers face new liabilities as a result of environmental laws, and restrictive permitting requirements for new projects make mine development an increasingly difficult proposition. An abundance of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations already confront on-going minerals operations, and complex new legislation and rule-making is always in progress. Acronyms and initials like RCRA, CERCLA, SARA and EIS become as familiar as reserves, tons, grades and recoveries. The growth of such regulation has created a new category of professional employees - environmental scientists and engineers-whose presence will influence minerals production activity from now on. The disciplines of environmental science and engineering are still being defined. While these definitions are being worked out, companies in the minerals industry have responded by hiring people with professional experience in existing disciplines and training them to their special needs. An environmental consulting industry of substantial proportions has developed to offer expertise where producing companies may not find it economic to hire full-time professionals. The mining schools have responded by introducing environmental course work, but these programs have yet to supply a significant number of environmental professionals to the minerals industry. To gain some perspective on where minerals producers now stand in their hiring of environmental professionals, ME recently surveyed 20 companies, with questions about how they go about the business of managing environmental compliance. Estimations have been made of the tonnage of raw ores and coal treated by various beneficiation processes. The amount treated by gravity concentration is substantially greater than that treated by flotation, with coal representing the bulk of the material treated by gravity means. A discussion is given of the trends and anticipated improvements in gravity methods. Except for the concentration of iron ores, magnetic and elec- trostatic separation processes find their greatest use in the beneficiation of non-sulfide ores. Exciting new developments in magnetic materials and separation process (and, to a lesser extent, in the electrostatic process) indicate a substantial increase in the application of such processes to ores and a broad variety of non-ore uses.
