This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.

Numerous problems encountered in the mining of narrow vein deposits challenge the productivity, competitiveness and profitability of many mines. Mechanization of mining operations is one of the most important means to ensure the healthy survival of this mining sector. Vein deposits account for nearly all the world's primary silver production, as well as a significant portion of gold, tin, copper lead and zinc. In North America, narrow vein mining constitutes an important sector of the industry. Operators exploiting such deposits are concerned with the most appropriate mining method and equipment to mine in such a way as to minimize waste rock dilution. Unfortunately, most of the equipment available does not meet the additional geological and economical restrictions typical of narrow vein mining. Thus, mining these deposits is labor intensive and can result in low productivity. Consequently, the profitability of many such mines is reduced. Increased mechanization is one of the solutions to ensure their healthy survival. This paper reviews the state-of-the art in mining equipment with reference to narrow vein mining limitations. Problems encountered Geological conditions and economical factors have a decisive impact on the choice of mining method and equipment. Many ore bodies are relatively small, usually erratically distributed, often less than 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, with dips ranging from 0° to 90°. To make things worse, ore body limits are sometimes difficult to determine and the ground is hard and abrasive.

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. A modified coal flotation characterization procedure, referred to as the Advanced Flotation Washability (AFW) technique, has been developed which, compared to traditional procedures, provides a more accurate prediction of the optimum separation performance achievable by a froth flotation process. The AFW procedure uses a vertically-baffled flotation column which provides enhanced selectivity among particles of varying degrees of hydrophobicity due to a plug-flow environment and an improved carrying-capacity environment. In fact, the separation performance of the traditional procedures was enhanced by increasing the possibility of operating under improved selectivity conditions. The separation performance provided by the AFW procedure was superior to that obtained from multiple cleaning stages using commercially-available flotation columns under both kinetic and carrying-capacity limiting conditions.

NIOSH is conducting research to reduce the silica dust exposure of workers at surface coal mines. One goal of this research is to evaluate the relationship between drilling parameters, rock strata and silica dust generation. This study involved measuring blast hole emission dust from a rotary drill rig which required sampling high concentration dust (>400 mg/m3) for silica content in a high velocity airstream. To measure dust initially, traditional sampling methods using personal sampling instruments were attempted in and around the shroud area of the drill with no success. Variations in the dust cloud concentrations under the shroud, the condition of the shroud and its orientation over the hole, and ambient air conditions prevented consistent and accurate dust measurements from being obtained. Amore consistent dust cloud is necessary for accurate measurements. An area of the drill’s dust collector system that consistently draws the emitted airborne dust from the hole is the collector tube. This tube connects the drill collector’s vacuum and dust filtration system to the shroud area. Assuming the collector system is working as designed, sampling from the collector tube would enable more consistent and accurate samples to be taken. However, current personal samplers are unable to sample in the concentrations and velocities experienced in the collector tube, so another method had to be devised. To achieve the desired results, an in-stack cascade cyclone was used. Preliminary field testing shows positive results.

A process has been developed for the successful hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The extracted copper in the form of a salt is converted by reduction to copper metal. Purification of the metal is described which includes a description of the casting of ETP quality copper wire bars.

Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) circuit is the most common grinding circuit to day. In Europe and South Africa fully autogenous (AG) circuits are also popular. SAG circuit has a lower capital cost and simple operation. SAG circuit requires the use of grinding balls, which increases operating costs and decreases availability. An AG circuit may produce a higher Net Present Value to the investment. The AG circuit is more complex to design and operate. However, operating experience from AG circuits illustrates that an AG circuit can be as trouble free as a SAG circuit with the benefit of lower operating cost.

The authors aim to analyze the behavior of smart sensors using Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) infrastructure in hazardous applications, because of their advantages regarding safety, expansion and Quality of Service (QoS). Initially, some constraints are discussed for these applications. Then, the possibility is analyzed of using 2.4 GHz TCP/IP based transmission for sending data out of an industrial area. In this setup the authors evaluated the round-trip implementation (which requires a database of packet lengths), related to the delay introduced by the radio transmission algorithms from 802.15.4, and 802.11d/g protocols. Tuning results of different varying time-delays were compared to the constant delay cases from the literature (Deák, 2003; Lincoln, 2003). Both the hardware and software setups are implemented. Based on TinyOS specific software for hardware checking/ initiating communication/ starting/ closing measurements the authors have developed separate/combined procedures for testing the integrated devices. Measured time delay is presented and analyzed, for both beaconed and non-beaconed 802.15.4 transmission, with power optimization criteria. By testing two different implementations (Zhang et al., 2001), (ATmega256 RZAV - 256KB flash memory, the CC2420 IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee-compliant RF transceiver core - 128KB flash memory) the authors have found some time delay variations as a result of local processing by the ZigBee controller with an amount of flash memory. The work is also focused on adapting industrial measuring standard systems to the smart sensors, but not only through the 4-20 mA standard.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).

An alternate development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at the nine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The study area consisted of 4,000' x 5,000' in plan and 1,080' in elevation. The massive orebody, the three-dimensional nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy, as compared to the two-dimensional tabular deposits such as coal deposits. Rather than using the confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from this study showed that a total of 50 DDHs rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimai" place- ment of the development drill holes.

The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. This paper focuses on polyolefin applications, the three-tier market for talc in polypropylene, the effects of various tales in typical compounds and trends in each market segment. Emphasis is given to emerging markets, examples of which are polypropylene compounds that mimic higher cost resins, and polyethylene films. Customer requirements for tales for these purposes are discussed.

'IM existing predictive methods were chosen for evaluation; an influence function (Bals Theory) and a profile function (hyperbolic). These ere applied to several field measured subsidence profiles over United States coal mines. The effect of homogeneous versus non-homogeneous overburden on surface subsidence is demonstrated and the utilization of Bals Theory as a subsidence predictive method for both types of overburden is examined. The major factor affecting subsidence profile characteristics is the migration of the inflection point toward the centerline of the longwall panel. A computer program was written to aid in the analysis.

he need in the mineral industry to treat increasingly larger tonnages has caused a demand for larger installations. In order to limit the size of these installations, it was necessary to build machines with larger capacities or production output. With this aim in mind, WEMCO Division developed the No. 120 WEMCO-Fagergren Flotation Cell in 1967. These large cells have been compared to conventional smaller cells from the standpoint of metallurgical performance, investment costs, power requirements and maintenance requirements in many plants throughout the world. Figure 1 illustrates the size difference of the No. 120 when compared with the No. 66. All results to date indicate the large No. 120 cell surpasses the smaller machines in all categories.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

Chromatography, ion exchange, and other techniques based on the interaction of solutes with solid phases offer versatility, high resolution capabilities, and near-universal potential applicability for the separation of valuable constituents in liquid solutions. The expense associated with obtaining reasonable throughput for these separations has been the only, albeit overwhelming, obstacle preventing widescale use of these methods. Attempts to devise continuous (cheaper) systems have previously resulted in moving, or simulated moving, beds of resin with complicated valving and timing sequences. These disadvantages, plus technical problems associated with the disturbing effects of non-plug flow and reduced resolution of moving versus packed beds, severely limit applicability of these systems. Over the past decade a new device has been developed that overcomes many of these problems. It utilizes a slowly (less than one revolution per hour) rotating annular bed of sorbent material with fixed-feed inlet and product withdrawal points. Numerous units of various diameters and lengths have been fabricated and operated, and a parallel effort has developed a satisfactory theoretical treatment of the device. Several simple control systems have been incorporated to thoroughly demonstrate the simplicity of operation, even for multiple products and multiplecarrier flows. This device has been developed using several metal solutions and has demonstrated its power with some of the most difficult, including the zirconium-hafnium, separations. Design equations are available for sizing units based on simple laboratory data and have been tested for units as large as 18 in. in diameter.

In May of 1984, it was decided that Outokumpu Oy would design and build a new nickel flotation mill to process ore from the newly discovered Enonkoski mine in eastern Finland. Since there hart peen a number of successful process charges in the existing mills, the design effort included the study and incorporation of several new developments, including all-autogenous grinding, "flash flotation", lane cell roughing, large cell cleaning and a computer-based, profit optimizing, process control system. The paper discusses the background and results of those studies, and a description of the resulting mill which will begin production in 1986.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground- water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrology problems. Such problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by isotropic rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where isotropic rocks are not present. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground water used by -hydrologists in the study of behavior of wells should be helpful to mine operators, The work of the Ground Water Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey through its history has been confined largely to the study of ground water as a resource, In view of the increasing number of problems relating to drainage of mines, the Branch started an investigation of mine hydrology in 1945 under the direction of W.T. Stuart, Mr. Stuart and other workers are making detailed studies of specific mine areas. In the present paper an attempt is made to synthesize some facts about ground water into usable form for the typical mine operator. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen, Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine. The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and increase in areal extent when the mine deepens, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised.
