Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

Recent experience over extensive areas of the Basin and Range Province has demonstrated the importance of the basin's (valley's) geology and geomorphology in locating large quantities of good-quality aggregate. First, a geologic map depicting basic geomorphic-geologic units in a valley is made in the office from aerial photography. Next, derivative maps are made from geologic maps and field-derived information such as parent rock type, source area and depositional environment, relationship to adjacent deposits, and Quaternary geologic history. Studying the derivative maps leads to selection of test sites for potential deposits of high-quality aggregates. Subsequent field studies provide more detailed information about geologic processes and samples for laboratory testing. Combining all information allows the characterization of aggregate potential of very large areas. Favorable areas can be further tested. This phased approach has proven to be cost effective. The methodology used in mapping and characterizing basinfill deposits is applicable over much of the western United States. Map units were developed by focusing on the predominate geomorphic process, grain size, cementation, and relative age. The resulting functional map units are of use to engineers and planners. This study led to many conclusions, including the fact that the best quality basinfill aggregates are found in selected alluvial fan deposits and Pleistocene lakeshore deposits. The best quality aggregates are derived from Paleozoic carbonate and quartzitic parent materials that can also provide high-quality crushed-rock aggregates.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

We present a review of research and development for coal based clean energy systems aiming for zero emissions to the atmosphere. These systems can utilize all kinds of coal or other solid carbon sources such as tar sands as well as liquid hydrocarbons. The chemical energy of carbon is transferred to hydrogen and used in power generation, in fuel cells, or hydrogen combusting turbines. The waste products of these future power-generating systems are ash, sulfur compounds and CO2. We also summarize current and developing technologies for processing of CO2to produce mineral carbonates for permanent disposal, and associated byproducts.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with U.S. Borax and Chemical Corporation and the Kennecott Copper Corporation, has investigated the use of the microseismic method to evaluate the stability of large, open-pit slope walls. The method is based on the phenomenon that stressed rock normally emits subaudible rock noises, and the number of rock noises per unit time (noise rate) and the magnitude of the rock noises (amplitude) increase as the stresses in the rock approach the failure stress of the rock. Therefore, the detection and recording of those rock noises serve as a semiquantitative method of predicting the incipient failure of rock. This report briefly describes the three different types of microseismic apparatus, the procedures, and the results of microseismic investigations in the slope walls of the Boron Mine near Boron, California, and the Rimbley, Liberty, and Tripp-Veteran open-pit mines near Ely, Nevada. Microsesimic noise rates in stable inactive mining areas are between 0 and 10 noises/ hour; the rates in stable active mining areas are between 10 and 50 noises/hour; and the rate in unstable areas is as high as 2500 noises/ hour. High microseismic noise rates in the Liberty Pit correlate with the time of nearby earthquakes, indicating that the earthquakes affected the slope wall. The results provide evidence that the microseismic tech¬nique is applicable to large pit walls, and that the wide band, wide range microseismic equipment appears to be suitable for open-pit investigations.

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Two case studies of methane gas explosions and their effect on the operation of underground coal mines are presented. The studies detail the recovery operations and investigations at each mine site. These include the circumstances prior to the explosions and the effects on the surface and underground ventilation control systems. Various ignition sources such as surface and underground electrical power systems, degasification sites, ventilation shafts, test well casings, and lightning activity were investigated. In each case, a lightning report from the National Lightning Detection Network1 was used in conjunction with the physical evidence and eyewitness accounts to confirm lightning strikes as the ignition source for the explosions.

One of the problems that arises in the early stages of the mine planning before the determination of the mining exploitation method is to predict what will be the recoverable ore reserves in tonnage, grade and metal quantity, if the select ion is based upon block grades. The estimation of these recuperation or recoverable functions can act as an important planning tool in what concerns the appraisal of the consequences of ore-waste discrimination of individual blocks in a selective mining operation. Estimation methods of all these functions are discussed together with cross validation tests using the available information concerning a preliminary drilling campaign accomplished during the exploration stage of an iron orebody located in the North of Portugal (Moncorvo Orebody).

"The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion investment to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area and is the largest transit project initiated in Province’s history. Settlement control and impact to over 1400 adjacent structures due to tunnelling was identified early as a critical project risk. The ground conditions along the 10km tunnel alignment consist of water bearing soft ground deposits (clays, sands, silts) which required careful analysis and control during design and construction. This paper will describe the process used to analyze settlements along the numerous of adjacent structures and evaluate achieved settlement results to those used during design. The paper will demonstrate that with the appropriate design specifications, selection of modernized EPB machines, and contractor performance, settlement can be maintained well below typical industry (volume loss) standards, expanding the application and suitability of soft ground tunnelling in sensitive settlement areas. INTRODUCTION The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion (2010$ CND) investment from the Ontario provincial government to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area. The project is being developed by Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario to provide 19 kilometers of dedicated LRT service connecting the City of Toronto from the west to east along Eglinton Avenue. Upon completion in the year 2020, the Crosstown will be the first LRT constructed in Toronto. It will link regional and local transit, cut travel time along the route by half and provide over a thousand jobs during construction."

Direct mineral carbonation was investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2, into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results were achieved using heat-pretreated serpentine feed material and a high partial pressure of CO2 (Pc02). Specific conditions include 155°C, PC02 = 185 atm and 15% solids. Under these conditions, a 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy was utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths. I would like to first summarize the relevant health information relating to the workers and general populations around uranium mining as a basis for understanding the hazards associated with these operations and their available remedies. This discussion will summarize the literature on Radon and its daughters, among the most toxic uranium decay products. Second, I will discuss waste handling in the uranium industry: past, present and future, discussing exploration, mining, and milling and the volumes of water and solid and gaseous wastes which are associated with these various phases of uranium operations. This paper will also include a discussion of the various past and present materials handling technologies and their responsiveness to the concern for uranium waste isolation. I will then conclude with a summary of recent modifications in the relevant standards as applied to uranium mining and milling. Joseph Wagoner, a research epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service has summarized the literature on uranium mining and its health effects in his written testimony as a commissioned witness in British Columbia Royal Commission of Inquiry into Uranium Mining in January of 1980, entitled Uranium, The U.S. Experience: A Lesson in History.1 Briefly summarizinq his report, as early as 1546, miners of uranium bearing ores in Central Europe were reported to have unusually hiqh frequencies of fatal lung disease2. As early as 1879, the real nature of pulmonary disorders among these miners was first diagnosed to be malignant neoplasia or lung cancers. Of 655 miners dying between 1875 and 1912, 40% or 276 of these Central Europe miners died of lung cancer.4 By 1939, it was reported that lung cancer mortality rate for miners in these Central European mining districts was several times (9.7 per 1000) higher than that for similar populations in Vienna, Austria (0.34 per 1000). Thus, before uranium mining began in the U.S., there was a considerable body of information linking uranium mining to lung cancers. The U.S. experience can be summarized in Table 1 also from Wagoner's B.C. In the field of grouting, practitioners fre¬quently advocate procedures that are often unique and contradictory. As a result there has been considerable debate as to what constitutes optimum grouting practice. A knowledge of both the rheological properties and the flow characteristics of grouts is essential to the development of a rational understanding of the grouting process. Flow models and viscosity experiments have been conducted using cement grouts comprising High Early Strength Portland and Microfine cements. The addition of superplasticizers was found to enhance the flowability of the grouts as well as to reduce the effective groutability ratio. Steady state flow equations and design charts for predicting the radial penetration of cement grouts have been developed.

In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.

Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there
