The CANMET diesel-related work, carried out in cooperation with the Canadian mining industry, resulted in the identification of several useful R/D studies. One such study was the development of a dash-mounted alarm signal system to indicate overexposure of production LHD diesel vehicle operators to toxic contaminants in a mine environment. The resulting instrument has been called the [CO2 Exposure Meter]. This meter is particularly applicable to LHD machines because previous investigations have indicated that operators of LHDs and some haulage truck drivers are exposed to up to 200% of the contaminant concentrations measured in the general mine return air. This paper describes the development of the system which continuously monitors and displays the operator's exposure to diesel pollutants, and indicates an overexposure by an alarm light. The overexposure limits are preset by mine personnel based on carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements, which in turn are related to simultaneous spot respirable combustible dust (RCD) measurements (or to Air Quality Indices - AQI, if available). The CO2 settings are, in general, related to the engine/exhaust treatment selections, vehicle duty cycle and local ventilation rates and efficiency. The system continuously displays one of three lights: green for underexposure, yellow for caution, and red for overexposure. Overexposure can occur for several reasons, such as: reduced ventilation, malfunction of the diesel vehicle, and excessive airborne contaminants. The paper confirms satisfactory operation of the system in a laboratory-simulated mine environment, as well as in field trials.

Specifically, the effects of preferential classification, bypassed fines, and the sharpness of classification will be examined. Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

The incorporation of particles into metal matrix materials is important to many technologically important areas. Particles that are incorporated into a metal matrix have a significant effect upon the properties of the resulting composite. Proper selection of particles and incorporation densities can lead to optimal composite properties that can be modified as needed for various applications. This paper discusses the parameters that affect the particle incorporation density in electrodeposited metal matrix composite coatings as well as a deterministic model that can be used to predict the effects of such parameters on particle incorporation density.

INTRODUCTION "On many projects, the tendency is to drop interest and support of the geological service as soon as it seems safe. That . . . is a short-sighted policy . . . It would be of further service perhaps to learn whether predictions were reasonably true to life." --C.P. Berkey, 1938 (3) This paper quantitatively compares predicted and encountered shear zone size and location and rock type for tunnels in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Colarado Mineral Belt is composed of igneous formations with associated metamorphic rocks and faulting. As such, it represents the most complex of provinces for at-grade predictions (27). Shear zone and rock type data are assumed to be statistically homogeneous because of the common geology of the seven tunnels. It is often felt by geologists and engineers that the amount of information from which a geological model is created is so low that any statistical inferences are unstable. In other words, the addition of new data may drastically alter the means and variances suggested by the model. Therefore, predictions are rarely couched in quantitative statistical terms but modified with "probably," "most likely" or "possibly." Comparison of predicted and encountered data from past geological models will permit the "probably's" to be quantified and distilled from the art of geological prediction. To date, two other studies of the validity of predictions have been made (26 and 16). Together, these two studies indicate that

INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. Copper mining is the main activity in Zambia and is confined to the large scale operations, mainly on the Copperbelt. The Copperbelt covers an area of size l00km by 50 km with a total of 10 underground and 5 open-pit mines operated by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) Limited. Most of the operations in these mines involves drilling and blasting. The loading of broken materials is by both manual and mechanical operations. Among the many risk factors associated with mining on the Copperbelt, is the occurrence of Pneumoconiosis which in the recent past has become quite prevalent and thus an important occupational health hazard for the industry. This study was carried out with the aim of establishing trends of pneumoconiosis incidence through the annual data collected by Pneumoconiosis Medical and Research Bureau of the Ministry of Health in Zambia, so that a basis could be formed for future research work. Breakage, handling and treatment techniques that result in the placement of greater quantities of coal in fixed volume haulage units such as ships, railroad cars, trucks, mine cars, shuttle cars and scoops can do much to increase productivity by improving bulk density to reduce delivered cost, surprisingly enough, only in steel industry by-product coking has this subject been investigated and applied to practice, where as much as 20% or more productivity has been achieved. Research at UK Mining using popular coal mine loading cycle simulators shows that for typical Central Appalachian mining conditions a 10 to 20 percent gain in bulk density can produce a 15 to 30 percent increase in the loading cycle time of fixed volume shuttle-car/scoop based mining systems.

Efficient and re1iable methods of fragmentation through blasting have been sought ever since the introduction of black powder in mining operations, but the pace of investigation became faster with the discovery of nitroglycerine. The development of modern measuring instruments and the need to blast more rock with the least damage has made the study of blasting mechanics and its application more important, particularly since the oil embargo. Investigations into the practical approach evolved by Daws (1909) and the work done to make it more useful is discussed. The work of several investigators is touched upon with particular reference to the development of computer programs to simulate and optimize blasting operations.

Mining project investment concerns the installation of mine capacity for the purpose of generating a stream of future economic benefits. In order to make this type of investment decision, the optimum specifications for the project must first be determined. Then, the economic justification of the investment tin be evaluated based on these specifications. Economic evaluation to guide mining project investment decisions is based on a proposed plan for mining the deposit over its operational life. If single point estimates are made of deposit characteristics and environmental parameters* as the basis for assessing a future stream of economic benefits associated with the investment, a future mining-plan can be optimally fitted to these estimates and, to the extent that such estimates are actually realized, this plan will retain optimality.

Extensive deposits of high-calcium limestone occur in the Upper Mississippian Warsaw and Ste. Genevieve Limestones in the region of the lower Cumberland, Tennessee, and Ohio Rivers in western Kentucky. Analyses of foot-by-foot samples from 20 quarries and cores in 8 counties show variations between the chemical composition of high-calcium deposits in the 2 formations. Knowledge of probable variations in composition should aid in prospecting for high-calcium stone for a specific use and in evaluating potential deposits. High-calcium strata in the Warsaw consist of bryozoan- and crinoid-rich bioclastic limestones, and in the Ste. Genevieve, predominantly oolitic limestones. Values used for comparison were obtained by averaging the foot-by-foot analyses of each high-calcium deposit, 10 in the Warsaw and 15 in the Ste. Genevieve. Average MgCO3 and Fe2O3 contents are generally lower in the Warsaw than in the Ste. Genevieve. Average SO2, S, and P contents are- generally higher in the Warsaw. No characteristic differences are apparent between the average CaCO3 and A1203 contents of the two formations. The higher S and P contents of the Warsaw are believed attributable to the predominance of biogenic material in these limestones. Within the Warsaw Limestone, higher average S and A1203 contents and lower average Fe2O3 contents were found in deposits in the northern half of the region. In the Ste. Genevieve, vertical variations in composition occur within individual high-calcium deposits containing oolitic and nonoolitic limestones. Lower average CaCO3 contents and higher average contents for the other constituents were found in the nonoolitic intervals.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner, is an important problem facing the mining industry in the united states. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Batch experiments were performed using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite. Variables that were studied included: mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residue was subjected to arsenic leach tests and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests.

Gold, as a precious metal, has been sought for several thousand years. During this time economics have generally determined whether or not a deposit is minable. Today, few would spend $500.00 or $1,000.00 to produce one ounce of gold, yet most gold deposits currently being mined would have such costs if they were mined using the methods of the 18th century. Innovation has been the key to success in the world of mining. We are constantly having to look for new ways to mine deposits of lower grade, at greater depths, or with higher stripping ratios. The mining of placer gold deposits has always been subject to the volatile swings of the world price and the constant rise in production costs. The rise in costs is compounded by the drop in overall ore grades. Occasionally, a major technological innovation will dramatically reduce the costs of placer mining to allow previously marginal or unminable deposits to be mined at a profit. The continuous bucketline dredge was the last such major innovation in the gold placer mining. The continuous bucketline dredge has allowed large volumes of placer deposits to be picked up and processed on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, as the overall grade of the deposit declines, it becomes impossible to process enough ore to pay for the operating costs. There are many gold deposits around the world waiting for the next technological innovation that will allow them to be mined. One such deposit has been the Grey River deposit near Greymouth in New Zealand. Introduction The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries. But there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the Newcastle area. This is nearly 50 years after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-60s is primarily due to the expansion of the export market in Japan, Asia, and Europe. Australian coals Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins of Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in the Sydney, Bowen, Oakland, and Gailiee Basins. Apart from the Collie Basin in western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory, and the Tasmania Basin are basically unexploited. The Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia. Currently exploited or potentially commercial deposits of black coal in Australia occur in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. Estimated black coal reserves are summarized in Table 1. Coals from different ages have significant differences in their petrographic characteristics. Many of the Permian coals are usually rich in inertinite. Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically rich in vitrinite content. Typical petrographic and chemical characteristics of some important Australian coking coals are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The reserves of coking coals are restricted in the main to the Permian coals of the Sydney and Bowen Basins. Coal deposits in the latter are at shallow depth. A high percentage of these are being strip-mined. On the other hand, in the Sydney Basin, the majority of the reserves of good quality coking coals are at significant depth. The mining cost of these deposits is substantially higher than those in the Bowen Basin. It is usually possible to make strong coke with Australian Permian coals of vitrinite content much lower than the other international coals. But there are many major Permian deposits in Australia where low vitrinite content presents problems. As they are classified as marginal coking coals, optimization of their pro¬cessing plays an important role in meeting the market specifications of coking coal. The major reason for processing Australian coal is to reduce the ash content. Compared with British and some American coals, Australian coals are of relatively high ash content. Unlike American coals, more than 99% of the Australian coal deposits have sulfur content less than 1%. Consequently, sulfur control has never been a major problem. Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

Every year, severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine, shuttle car, scoop or other piece of mobile mining equipment. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Although hundreds of these systems are installed and in use in operating coal mines, the influence that coal has on the electromagnetic fields associated with these systems has never been rigorously quantified. NIOSH researchers have conducted tests to measure whether the proximity of coal has a significant influence on a popular design of proximity detection system. The system tested utilizes a low frequency magnetic field generator that would be mounted on the mining machine. At the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine in Pittsburgh, researchers measured the performance of a simplified proximity detection system of this type first on the surface then underground at varying distances from a coal face. Analysis of these measurements shows that the presence of coal does not have a measurable impact. Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.

The paper in based on laboratory and pilot plant investigations which led to the development of a series of processes for production of high purity metals from nickel-copper-cobalt mattes of a wide range of composition. The selection of ammonia pressure leaching or acid pressure leaching for various mattes is discussed. This is followed by discussion of various methods for leach solution purification and metal separation. The metals of high purity are produced by reduction with hydrogen from purified solutions. Examples are given of complete flowsheets for a number of mattes. Drawing upon those examples, general principles for the selection of the most suitable treatment process for particular material are outlined. Under certain circumstances, those processes may replace part of the pyrometallurgical treatment and all of the electrolytic refining steps which are customary in the treatment of nickel-copper-cobalt mattes.
