The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA's) rapid transit system, Metro, ultimately will comprise 162.5 km (101 miles) of line divided among 10 routes. As shown in Figure 1, about 24 km (15 miles) of the system will consist of mined rock tunnels distributed along the A, B, C and K Routes. The structural construction contracts for all of the A, C and K Route rock tunnels are complete and trains are running in about one-third of them. A contract for construction of rock tunnel section B-9, the southernmost third of the B Route, was awarded on June 27, 1980. The final design of Sections B-10 and B-lla, the remainder of the rock tunnel portions of the B Route and the Metro system, are well advanced and should be under con¬struction by 1982. Of Metro's 87 stations, 11 will have been constructed by mining in solid rock, a not inconsiderable achievement, since each structure must be over 183 m (600 feet) long, wide enough to accommodate two trains and one or two passenger platforms, and high enough to achieve a stable arching action without encumbering columns. With the passage of years, some original priorities have been reordered, and ways have been sought to streamline and simplify this most complex of Metro structures without grossly violating the architectural standards that make it unique. This paper will summarize that search, and describe the design and construction aspects of the resulting product, the dual chamber rock tunnel station.

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's™ attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can he extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's™ attribute feature in a ventilation simulation format.

Since 1993 Inco Ltd. has been using wet shotcrete at Stobie Mine. Through an evolving process the mine has reduced the thickness and fiber content of its steel fiber reinforced (sfr) shotcrete. However, the shotcrete support is used without any other type of ground support. A process referred to as bolt less shotcrete. Boltless shotcrete is used as the primary ground support method in development headings when the sub level caving front passes through the development drifts which now serve as migrating ore draw points. Although there are references of drifts and tunnels supported by shortcrete only, written accounts are rare. The empirical nature of most underground support designs makes them of limited value in a boltless environment. Considerable amounts of material testing and insitu trials have been completed in order to estimate material property strengths. Material testing, for adhesion, flexural strengths and compressive strength along with observational insitu data have been used to evaluate the performance of shotcrete. Punch tests on panels have also been undertaken in order to gain insights on the limitations of the two dimensional testing common to the laboratory. All these design aspects have been successfully utilized to design an efficient ground support process.

The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

Since the late 19405, St. Joe has operated rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment underground in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt operations. At first, the trackless equipment was operated in conjunction with rail haulage equipment in the room-and-pillar operations, but was to later replace rail haulage completely. The first pieces of equipment to travel on pneumatic rubber tires were short-haul shuttle cars of 12-ton capacity hauling rock from the heading to the mainline railroad. Early-model drill jumbos were the next pieces of production equipment to be carried on rubber, along with mobile slusher ramps. Mobile diesel equipment, in the form of conventional rear-dump trucks, made its appearance underground in the early 1950s, introducing the era of relatively high-speed mobile equipment as compared to the electrically powered shuttle cars. Haulage distances for rubber-tired vehicles were no longer dictated by trolley lines and trailing cables and tires were subjected to increasingly severe applications. St. Joe's first completely trackless mine, the Hayden Creek Mine, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and for the first time, an articulated diesel truck consisting of the tractor unit of a conventional earthmoving scraper and a rear-dump rock wagon. Those machines rolled on the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an In- creasing portion of the underground haulage today.

In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the effectiveness of the safety elements used to prevent tunnel methane explosions. These fa1l under the general categories of better ventilation, better gas monitoring, reducing ignition sources, and improved worker training. For this evaluation, a technique called fault-tree analysis was used to analyze questionnaire responses from 27 tunneling experts. This analysis allowed us to rank the effectiveness of each safety element, and indicates where money is best spent to reduce the chance of a methane explosion. Results indicated that large decreases in the explosion hazard only take place with the simultaneous application of several elements. Most of these involve a human component - the everyday vigilance and awareness of those working underground.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

Most miners dream of finding a gold mine sometime during their mining careers, but not very often do such dreams come true. On the tenth day of September, 1962, our dream of finding gold came true when the results of the third drill hole were received. This was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of our lives. Little did we realize then that this was the beginning of a major discovery destined to became one of the largest gold mines in the country. Discovering and mining gold is not entirely new, however, to Eureka. County a old Lynn Mining District in northeastern Nevada. Since 1900 there has been sporadic activity, mostly consisting of small lode mines and placers. These have produced totally about $300,000; and existence of our orebody would probably have remained unknown had it not been for the United States Geological Survey. The USGS extensively mapped the Roberts Mountain Thrust and published a paper indicating that mineral occurred along this fault and in some places was gold bearing. Utilizing this information, our Newmont Exploration geologists located an area in which: drills were brought in to test their theories. By keeping flexible in our thinning and working, we were able to bring a raw prospect to a producing mine with ore reserves of eleven million tons in a short three-year period.

This paper discusses the modification of the cyanide tailings treatment method from ferrous sulfate to Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid). An examination of the operating parameters, costs, and chemistry describes how the decision was made to switch to this treatment method. Plant data collected from the last several months will be used, along with considerations from an operator's viewpoint.

Nautilus Minerals was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 2006. The company now has major mining companies Anglo America (5.7%), Teck Cominco (7.2%) and Epion Holdings (22.4%) as significant shareholders, and has raised approximately $US346 million dollars to develop the world's first deep-water mine. The company is currently targeting high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization, located near plate boundaries in back-arch basins of the Western Pacific. The first mine scheduled to be developed by the company is located in 1,600 meters of water at Solwara 1, in the relatively quite waters of the Bismarck Sea approximately 50 km from the port of Rabaul, within the Territorial Waters of Papua New Guinea. During 2006 and 2007 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the world?s first NI 43-101 compliant resource statement and environmental impact study for a seafloor massive sulphide system. Permitting is well advanced for the project, with initial production scheduled for late 2010, subject to timely grant of the permits. Extensive government and stakeholder liaison and engagement has been undertaken throughout the projects life, and is a core feature of Nautilus' desire to "do it right" in all aspects of this new industry.

Medusa Cement Company, a division of Medusa Corporation, is a medium-sized cement manufacturer serving the midwest, east, and southeast. Medusa's eight plants are located in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada. Of these, six have active limestone, shale, clay, and sand quarries now in operation. This paper deals with the various individual state laws regulating mining and reclamation at the Georgia, Illinois, and Pennsylvania quarries. Several recommendations for future state mining laws are discussed also.

Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilising a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production will treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomise the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognised problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them. currently approximately 15m (48')overall diameter.
