Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is currently in a Pre-feasibility study evaluating a large and deep copper and molybdenum deposit in the historic mining district east of Superior, Arizona. Work scheduled for the next several years includes dewatering the existing shut-down mine (the Magma Mine) and sinking an exploratory shaft to 2,130 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface. To dewater the Magma Mine and sink the exploratory shaft, RCML must extract and manage about 2 billion gallons of accumulated mine water inventory, as well as about 300 million gallons per year of new inflow. In order to conserve a valuable water resource in a desert environment, RCML worked with the New Magma Irrigation and Drainage District (NMIDD) to provide treated mine water to blend with and supplement the NMIDD?s water supply to approximately 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland located east of Phoenix. A 44 km (27-mile) pipeline was needed to convey the treated water. It was essential that a treatment system be used which could reliably meet irrigation water quality goals, produce a non-scaling effluent to maintain pipeline flow capacity, and generate a dense sludge minimizing disposal cost and volume. This paper describes the resulting mine water treatment and recovery system (MWTS) and how the system has performed against objectives.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The US Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance for mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

Gold extraction from refractory ores as a percentage of total gold production is increasing. The processing technology options for treating difficult-to-process refractory ores are also increasing. The best processing option is dependent on many factors including feed grade and the cause for ore refractoriness. The causes for ore refractoriness are many foldCpreg-rob­bing, encapsulation in pyrite, arsenopyrite or silica, presence of cyanocides, presence of cyanide-insoluble gold compounds, etc.1. The first step in the process development of a refractory gold deposit is to determine the cause for ore refractoriness. The traditional approach of undertaking detailed mineralogical examination of ore types, major and minor mineral constituents and their association does not necessarily provide the metallur­gist all the information needed for characterization of gold-bear­ing ores. For process development programs it is desirable to complement traditional mineralogical methods with diagnostic leach testing, which attempts to quantify the deportation of gold in various mineral matrices. This paper briefly reviews the diagnostic leaching proce­dures and its applications for a wide range of gold-bearing refractory ores, both primary and by-product.

Determination of the state of an underground fire plays an important role in fire fighting, rescue and reopening operations. This is normally achieved by the analysis and interpretation of fire gases taken from the fire zone. However, drawing conclusions from gas analysis is not an easy task and needs specialist skills, expertise and experience that are usually beyond the knowledge of the officials in a mine. The complexities of a mine fire and the uncertainties of available information often make effective fire fighting decisions difficult if not impossible. This paper describes a knowledge based expert system that can aid in the diagnosis of sealed coal mine fires. Using a commercially available shell, the expert system has been designed to accommodate a series of diagnostic rules replicating the reasoning logic that would be used by human experts. The system allows the diagnosis of explosibility of the fire zone and trends of various fire ratios to be easily visualised for decision making. By continuously analysing the incoming information, the system is able to provide a rapid assessment of the situation of a sealed mine fire prevailing under specific mining and geological conditions. In addition, short term trends in fire behaviour can be predicted and possible fire control actions recommended. An example is given and shows how this system can be used as an analytical tool in various ways to assist the combating of coal mine fires. Further development of the system is discussed.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

The Wyoming craton in the western United States is a favorable terrane for diamond deposits. The craton hosts a variety of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and ultrapotassic rocks. Additionally, a few hundred 'kimberlitic' heavy mineral anomalies and some geophysical and remote sensing anomalies indicate the presence of undiscovered, mantle-derived, pipes in the craton. The Wyoming craton is separated into a Wyoming 'archon' known as the Wyoming Province, and the Colorado 'proton' known as the Colorado Province. The 'archon' underlies much of Montana and Wyoming and continues north into Alberta and Saskatchewan; the Colorado 'proton' underlies much of Colorado and a small portion of Wyoming. Although most exploration geologists would consider the 'archon' the most favorable terrane for commercial diamond deposits, the 'proton' has produced more than 120,000 diamonds, while the 'archon' has not been very productive.

The Ekati process plant flowsheet features the common steps in diamond recovery plant design. Primary treatment and concentration is by crushing, scrubbing, high-pressure grinding rolls and heavy medium separation (Fig. 1). Secondary concentration is by an attrition mill; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation and X-ray sorting (Fig. 2). All of these are performed on site, although final sorting of the diamonds into commercial categories will be carried out elsewhere. The initial throughput rate is 9 kt/d (9,900 stpd), increasing to 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) during the first 10 years of operation. A range of ore characteristics will be encountered that will effect the plant operating conditions during the life of the mine. The adopted design envelope is based on these expected variations. The design is based on the use of large-scale equipment, incorporating the latest and most efficient technology available. Where proven technology exists, no attempt was made to reinvent the wheel. However, where recently developed technology offers a significant advantage, this has been incorporated into the design. The Ekati run-of-mine (ROM) and coarse ore handling facilities are unheated, to take advantage of the better handling characteristics of the frozen ore in winter. The stockpile reclaim features an MMD mineral sizer (a toothed roll crusher) to minimize the problems of handling thawed, sticky kimberlite in the summer and break frozen lumps in the winter. All processing downstream from primary crushing and the coarse ore stockpile is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building. Personnel involvement in the process is mini¬mized by using a Modicon Quantum series PLC with human-machine-interfaces (HMI) running Wonder-ware software on dedicated personal computers.

More than 220,000 diamonds have been found in the United States that range from microdiamonds to 40.42 carats in weight (Table 1). Some reports suggest diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have also been found in this country, although these reports have not been verified. The source of most of the diamonds in the United States is a group of kimberlite pipes, dikes and blows in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district and a group of lamproite pipes in the Murfreesburo, AR area. Other areas where diamonds have been found include the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Coast and the southern Appalachian Mountains. The latter two regions are generally not considered favorable for diamond deposits. This is based on exploration models. They suggest commercial diamond deposits will be restricted to kimberlites emplaced in Archean cratons and to lamproites emplaced in Proterozoic mobile belts accreted to the cratons.

Exploration activity for diamonds in Canada has recently experienced a dramatic increase. Disclosure of a diamond discovery exhibiting features of a potentially economic deposit contained in a kimberlite pipe in the Lac de Gras area of Canada's Northwest Territories has sparked substantial interest in-Canada and abroad and has triggered the largest staking rush in terms of area in the history of Canadian exploration. In this paper, we report on the nature and extent of current exploration activity in Canada for diamonds (with special attention to Arctic regions), the results of this activity to date, and the context in terms of current world markets for diamonds.

1984 saw the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in Soviet geology-the discovery of kimberlites in Siberia, an event that vaulted the Soviet Union to second rank among the world's producers of both gem and industrial diamonds. There are many legends associated with this story, legends about those who predicted the discovery and those who achieved it in the field. The story told here unfolded during the field campaigns of the 1940s through 1960s, as witnessed by the authors and their companies of an earlier generation. This story illustrates science, chance, and human emotions at work, resulting in a blend of conviction, courage, bureaucratic sniping, and competition for glory. At the same time, it is an illustration of the workings of the Soviet exploration system. In a broader sense, it is the realization of the Russian image-boundless natural wealth, indomitable ingenuity, and the rigid political economic system that permeates the Russian landscape as well as the people. Most accounts of the Siberian diamond saga begin with statements such as, "This discovery confirmed the predictions of...", or "It was a result of predictions of one of the greatest Soviet geologists, Academician V.S. Sobelov...". These are only part of the truth. It had become apparent even in the 1930s that the Siberian Platform contained one of the Earth's greatest Basaltic provinces, described in a monograph by Sobolev...; and at the end of the thirties, G.G. Moor of the Institute of Arctic Geology found alnoites, similar in many ways to kimberlites. At the same time, the famous polar geologist, N.N. Urvantsev found other kimberlite like rocks in the southern Taymir Peninsula, adjacent to the Siberian Platform. In publications describing these rocks, Moor and Urvantsev mentioned for the first time the possibility of finding diamondiferous kimberlites similar to those in South Africa. Unfortunately, Urvantsev spent little time in the field between terms in concentration camps. Moor was considered by his superiors to be no more than a good descriptive petrographer; they suggested to him that his conclusions should be backed up by more highly regarded specialists. Thereupon, Moor asked Sobolev to coauthor a paper with him and this became the widely quoted prediction about diamonds in Siberia. Another early paper should also be mentioned, an unpublished paper found by M.I. Rabkin in the geological archives of the Norilsk Metallurgical Plant, written by Yu. M. Sheinmann when he worked in the concentration camp there in the late forties. This report placed the probable location of yet-to-be-discovered kimberlites within less than 100 km of their correct location.

In 1989 natural industrial diamonds counted for 55% of the world's natural diamond production. Australia is currently the leading producer (35%). Zaire is the second largest producer (19%). of what is primarily industrial grade rather than gem grade. Botswana (17%) is third, with the former USSR (15%) fourth, and the Republic of South Africa (8%) fifth. Diamonds are also mined in Angola, Namibia, the Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Ghana, Tanzania, Guinea, and other African countries. In the Western Hemisphere, Brazil is the principal producer, with some production from Venezuela and Guyana [(Fig. 1)]. A very small output of diamonds is mined today in India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the United States, efforts at commercial diamond mining have been confined to a small area near Murfreesboro, AR. The first diamond was found in a pipe there in 1906. Small scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered more than 2,000 years ago, only about 380 t have been mined. In order to obtain 1 g (5 metric carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 t of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining and extremely sophisticated processes in diamond recovery. END USES Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses: gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty, while industrial diamonds are essential materials of modem industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic industrial diamonds are now of a quality and size that permit them to be substituted for natural diamonds in numerous industrial applications. For example, synthetic diamonds are available today in sizes up to 100 stones per carat (1.2 to 1.4 mm). In addition, polycrystalline synthetic diamond inserts, such as De Beers Syndite", General Electric's Compaxa and Stratapax", and Megadiamond's Megapax" have replaced natural diamonds in turning tools, mining and oil drilling bits, and dressing tool applications. Industrial Diamonds The diamond is by far the most important industrial abrasive. As recently as 50 years ago, consumption of industrial diamonds was less than that of gem diamonds, but since that time, industrial use has grown to a position of great dominance. During the six-year period 1929 to 1934, the material produced for industrial use amounted to about 74% by weight of the world's total output of diamonds. In 1989 the percentage of natural industrial diamonds mined in the world was 55%. When synthetic industrial diamonds are added to the natural industrial diamond figures, this percentage becomes 87% of total world diamond production including gems, near gems, industrial, and synthetic stones. The many uses responsible for these significant increases are dependent on the properties of the diamond, including hardness, cleavage, and parting, optical characteristics, presence of sharp points and edges, and capacity for taking and maintaining a high polish. The utilitarian role of the diamond was confined primarily to lapidary products until the industrial revolution, which created the first demand for diamond as an industrial tool. In 1777, a British inventor and instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden, used a diamond to cut a precision screw for an engine that he had invented. The first authentic description of industrial diamonds being set in a saw was recorded in 1854 by a Frenchman, Durnain. Eight years later a Swiss watchmaker, Jean Leschot, developed the first diamond drill bit for use in a hand operated machine, which was employed to drill blastholes in rock. In 1864, diamond bits were put to their severest test up to that time in the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel in the Alps. A few years later a steam-powered diamond drill with a speed of 30 rpm was able to penetrate rock at the modest rate of 0.3 m/hr. As the industrial revolution gained momentum on both sides of the Atlantic, metal replaced wood and machines replaced people. Thus the foundation was laid for precision engineering and the recognition of diamonds as an indispensable tool of industry. The next major demand for industrial diamonds came after World War I with the development of cemented carbide cutting tools. Diamond was found to be the most effective medium for finishing and grinding the new ultrahard metal. This discovery rapidly increased the demand for industrial diamonds. The availability of inexpensive diamond material inspired tremendous research into applications. By 1935, the first successful phenol-resin grinding wheel containing diamond had been marketed. Soon afterward, the metal-bonded and vitrified diamond wheels were produced, and, as the matrices and bonds that held the diamond grit in place began to improve, the popularity of diamond grinding wheels grew. The outbreak of World War II, and the accompanying increase in use of hard-metal tools in the munitions industry, increased the demand for industrial diamonds. Since about 1950, the development of ultrahard ceramics, semi- conductor materials, plastics, and exotic metal alloys has further consolidated the diamond's position as an indispensable tool of industry. Only diamond is hard enough to cut these superhard materials with the precision, speed, and economy that industry demands today. Special machines equipped with industrial diamonds are used to remove bumps from concrete runways and highways and to modify highway surfaces in order to prevent skid accidents. One definition of filtration states that it is utilized to affect a more complete separation of liquid and solid phases than is possible with settling alone. The development of Diatomaceous Earth filter aids has added a new dimension to filtration technology in the mining industry. It makes possible the filtration of slimes with almost perfect clarity, and at rates that become economical.

Diatomite deposits, the skeletal remains of tiny aquatic plants called diatoms, are found in many parts of the world. Only a few of these de- posits are of commercial value. Open pit mining is used in nearly all deposits now being worked. Processing methods range from simple drying, crushing, sizing and packaging to carefully controlled and highly sophisticated calcining and air classification procedures, employing the latest control and testing techniques. The major uses of processed diatomite are in filtration as filter aids and fillers and extenders.

Grefco Inc. operates two diatomite mines in the western Santa Ynez Mountains. The larger of the two mines, the Palos Colorados Mine, is located approximately seven miles southeast of Lompoc. The Miguelito Mine is located about two miles south of Lompoc on the west side of the Miguelito Canyon. Diatomite from the Palos Colorados and Miguelito mines is trucked to the Grefco plant at Lompoc for processing (Figure 1). HISTORY Grefco, Inc. evolved from the originating Dicalite Company which in 1929 began operations at the Walteria plant in the Palos Verdes Hills south of Los Angeles. In 1942 Dicalite leased the Palos Colorados mine at Lompoc. In 1944 the Dicalite Company was purchased by Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

It is appropriate to discuss diatomite at an AIME meeting in San Francisco. California has led the nation, and the world, in the production of diatomite products for more than 40 years. It appears that our State will maintain this position for a long time to come. Diatomite today ranks high in the list of California mineral commodities, with a total value since 1889 well in excess of $100 million. California's production has more than doubled since 1942. In 1959, the value of diatomite production in California is exceeded only by the following industrial mineral materials-borates, stone, sand and gravel and cement20,28. Also, not unimportant is the production of diatomite in each of our other Pacific Coast States, including Nevada. First, let us define diatomite. It is a sedimentary siliceous rock of organic origin, which consists mainly of the fossilized remains of diatoms. Diatoms are microscopic aquatic plants which have the capacity of precipitating silica bio-chemically so as to form a part of their organized structure. In the economic sense, we are not concerned with the numerous types of sedimentary materials which contain minor amounts of diatom residues, or with impure or highly indurated siliceous materials, which may have been formed from diatomite2. Diatomite (synonyms--diatomaceous earth, kieselgurO is a term generally restricted to material of such qualities as to be suitable for commercial uses. Diatomaceous silica is a designation which is best used to distinguish the basic component of diatomite, that is, the substance of the silica shell itself, and which is the major' constituent of beneficiated diatomite or processed diatomaceous products.

Diatomite or diatomaceous earth is composed of innumerable microscopic opaline skeletons of single-celled aquatic plants called diatoms. The unique properties of this material enable it to be used as an important filtration medium and filler. The Circumpacific contains several economic deposits of diatomite. The largest of these is located in Lompoc, Ca. This deposit is the world's largest, purest, and most uniform marine deposit currently being mined. The other Circumpacific deposits are of fresh water origin. These deposits and Lompoc's unique marine deposit are significant sources of the world's diatomite supply.
