The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior compiled and analyzed the information contained in this report. The report should be viewed as a current "still photograph" of a dynamic system. The information presented on a specific gemstone or for a specific state can and will change with time. This overview presents historical and reference information on the principal gemstones and their production in certain states. The report is not a definitive work on gemstones within the select states or United states.

Photogrammetry and laser scanning has been employed at a number of Newmont mine sites to mitigate risks associated with conventional structural mapping, determining the geometry of voids from old underground workings, and generating topography in areas of slope instability. Laser scanning has also been used to evaluate as-built pit slope configurations with respect to design assumptions, operational practices, and rock fall potential. Recently, remote sensing applications carried on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were used to generate base topography at some Newmont sites. UAV are generally more convenient and less expensive and can be utilized in areas where cloud cover prevents manned aerial photography missions. This paper discusses these applications, and provides commentary on their benefits and limitations based on recent experience.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Between 2005 and 2021, a NIOSH internal review showed that haul trucks were involved in 54 incidents at surface mines in the United States. Haul truck collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can assist in preventing accidents at surface mines. CXS use technologies to detect people or objects and alarm to alert haul truck operators. Robust testing can help ensure that they detect objects without excessive false positive alarms. Testing and validation would increase confidence in and encourage implementation of a CXS. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed documents related to the evaluation and validation of CXS with two objectives: (1) to identify methods and parameters used to evaluate detection performance and (2) to identify gaps in CXS test methods and in detection performance. Stakeholders can use the findings from this research to guide implementation of CXS to improve safety at surface mines.

"Considering the dominant role of fertilizers in global phosphate production, it is evident that with the ever increasing development in agriculture there will be a growing demand for phosphate beneficiation. With the rapid depletion of high quality reserves, investigations into more complex and lower grade ore bodies are required. The Minerals Processing Division at Mintek has been involved in process development and flowsheet design projects on phosphate resources since 2003. This paper will discuss the processes that Mintek has explored and employed to upgrade various phosphate ore bodies (>30% Phosphorous Pentoxide (P2O5)) in preparation for end user application. These are aimed at an improved understanding of ores in terms of their varying mineralogy and the development of appropriate process routes to meet product specification. OVERVIEW OF MINTEK Mintek is a state owned science council that undertakes R&D, consulting and sells products and services into the minerals beneficiation industry. Mintek has been in existence for 83 years with a current permanent staff complement of 750 of which 300 are professionals with a tertiary education. Being a non-profit organisation, the majority of funding comes from state grant and earmarked funding. All research is needs-driven exploring innovation through technology and process optimisation trends. Owing to a solid base of expertise, extensive laboratory and pilot facilities, and a historical database of knowledge, Mintek is well positioned and equipped to execute projects on a scoping, feasibility, prefeasibility and bankable level. USES OF PHOSPHATE Phosphate is the component in fertilizer essential for root and stem development in plants as well as rejuvenation of harshly depleted soil for which there is no agricultural substitute. Phosphate rock is essential for global food security with 87% used in the production of fertilizers. In agriculture as fertilizer, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients in addition to nitrogen and potassium. In former times, it was simply crushed and used as is, but the crude form is now only used in organic farming. Normally it is chemically treated to make Single superphosphate (SSP), Triple superphosphate (TSP), or Mono-ammonium phosphates (MAP) and Di-ammonium phosphates (DAP), which has a higher concentration of phosphate and is more soluble, thus more suitable for plant absorption."

First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.

Illumination is essential for mine safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to detect hazards associated with slips/trips/falls and powered haulage. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to improve miner safety by enhancing a miner?s ability to see mine hazards. Thus far, 16 papers have been published covering diverse topics such as cap lamps, machine-mounted lighting, glare, lighting maintenance, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology issues. NIOSH has also developed an LED cap lamp, LED area lighting, and a Visual Warning System (VWS). This paper provides an overview of the improvements from NIOSH-developed lighting that include: 94% faster trip hazard detection with the NIOSH LED cap lamp; 79% faster peripheral motion detection to detect pinning/striking hazards; no increase in glare; 71% faster machine movement hazard detection with the VWS. Current research is described concerning an LED cap lamp for metal/nonmetal miners, illumination for refuge alternative deployment and inspection, and whether lighting could be used to improve miner escape and rescue in smoke. Lastly, future possibilities of using lighting to improve miner safety are described.

INTRODUCTION In both the United States and Canada, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been promulgated by Federal and/or Provincial Legislatures. This paper focuses on the regulations pertaining to reserve reports required by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC RESERVE FILINGS Reserve reports made to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission are the only reserve reports which are directly regulated by the United States government. The requirements for SEC reserve reports are set forth in the filing forms as shown in Appendix A, from Item 17A of SEC Form S-18. These reporting requirements, which are intended to protect the investing public from inaccurate or misleading claims, are primarily oriented to S-1 or other filings for new stock issues but must also be followed for annual 10K reports which must be filed annually by U.S. public corporations as part of the Corporate Annual Report. These undertakings require independent audits of reserves, mine designs, plant facilities and a general economic evaluation of the planned or existing operation as part of the backup documents for filing. The region of Asturias, located in the northwest of Spain, has an extensive mining history; coal, gold, zinc, lead, copper, cobalt, mercury, iron, manganese, fluorspar and others have been extracted from the antiquity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin, the closure of all open pit coal mines and their restoration, the progressive closure of underground coal mines that is happening from the 1980?s, and the restoration of spoil heaps, provides post mining lands for alternative uses. In relation to metallic mining, the abandonment of all mercury mines without restoration in the 1970´s, has left significant quantities of wastes and mining works. More than thirty years later most of them remain without restoration. In these sites the legacy of the historical mining activities is apparent in the form of shafts, galleries and transversals, old mining installations and spoil heaps. Mine wastes have eventually become important Hg and As pollution sources, resulting in a widespread contamination of the surrounding soils and surface waters. Abandoned mines of other metals such as copper, cobalt, iron, etc. and industrial minerals such as fluorspar, have also left a mining legacy to take into consideration. In this context of declining mining areas, some remedial options have been applied to specific areas resulting in alternative uses as pastures, agro-forestry, industry and socio-cultural activities.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. A system based on seismic techniques has been developed to detect and locate men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Both theoretical and field studies have been used to generate models to predict the performance of the system. For a strong source, it is almost certain that the miner's signal will be detected if the geophone array can be positioned over a likely area of entrapment. After signal processing, it is highly likely that the location of the miner can be determined within an accuracy of 100 ft (30.5 m). The system is presently operational in a state of readiness in the event of a mine disaster.

Some commodities, such as natural aggregate, currently are produced in all 13 states; others such as beryllium and iodine are produced in only Utah and Oklahoma, respectively. In 2009 China mined 2.695 billion metric tones (Gt) of raw coal. It is estimated that only 3-5% or roughly 135 million metric tones (Mt) of these were mined from 300 some surface operations. Except for a dozen or so large modern operations, most of China's surface coal operations are small by western standards, with annual production ranging from a few thousand tones to 300,000 metric tones (mt). Depending on the size of operations, equipment used range from small trucks and shovels to large bucket wheel excavators and draglines in sizable pits. This article provides a brief overview of China's surface mineable coal reserves, mining methods commonly used and increasing environmental concerns; introductions of several large surface operations are also provided.

Since the 1974 introduction of catalytic converters to automobiles in the United States, more than 150,000 kg (5,000,000 oz) of platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been used in the converters. An estimated 8 to 10 million converters are being used annually in the United States, each containing from $5 to $15 of PGM metals. In addition, use of converters is beginning in Europe which will significantly increase the quantity of PGM used. Two basic types of catalysts for converters are being used: pellet and monolithic. The pellets are small, discrete spheres or cylinders of gamma-alumina coated with platinum group metals, Figure 1. The monolithic are honeycombs of a cordierite, A13(Mg,Fe)2Si5AlO18, base coated with gamma-alumina and subsequently with platinum group metals, Figure 2. Pellet catalysts are being used by General Motors and American Motors; whereas Ford and Chrysler are using monolithic catalysts. The table below compares the PGM content and value of the catalysts.

A resource of 134,400,000,000 tons of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 1,300 square miles vest of Green River, Wyoming (Culbertson, in preparation)(Figure 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6,667,000 short tons (Kostick, 1983), approximately 90 percent of which came from Wyoming trona. This enormous resource occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Creen River Formation (Eocene). The Green River Formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake (Lake Gosiute) that occupied the Green River Basin in south-western Wyoming 38-54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition during which time the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known, of which 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation).
