Many methods of evaluating the efficiency of mineral separations have been described in the literature. In most cases, these present the efficiency as a single number. This paper argues that single-number measures of efficiency are inadequate because they seldom allow reliable comparisons, and are unlikely to correspond to the optimum operating conditions. To realistically make comparisons, it is necessary to distinguish the particle-induced component from the equipment- induced component. In a number of situations where the separating property can be identified (such as in gravity concentration and classification), this can often be done. However, in more complicated systems, such as flotation, this has not been possible. A technique is described whereby particle and equipment contributions to efficiency can be distinguished without the need to define the separation property. Because smelter schedules define a boundary correlation between grade and recovery, they generate some of the better single¬-number measures of efficiency, but even these have limitations.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. An airborne dust survey was conducted at the Arthur W. White mine of Dickenson Mines Limited by CANMET/MRL and Dickenson Mines Limited Staff in April 1990 for the purpose of evaluating environmental conditions underground and in the surface mining plants. The survey was designed to measure respirable silica, total arsenic and lead concentrations at several workplaces. In addition, settled dust and rock samples were collected from workplaces and analysed for total arsenic content. More importantly, arsenic exposure data were needed to evaluate the impact of Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. A total of 165 area and personal air filter samples were collected during the study. Of these, 85, 67 and 13 samples were for arsenic, silica and lead respectively. Sampling aid analyses were performed according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations. More than 90% of the workplaces sampled for respirable silica, total arsenic and lead were below the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations; and 10% of the workplaces sampled for arsenic shaved concentrations above the Threshold Limit value (TLV) proposed in the Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. These results were used to identify occupations and/or workplaces where more sampling and control measures were required respirable silica, total arsenic and lead. This paper describes the results of the dust sampling program conducted at Dickenson Mines Limited.

On August 29, 1989, the Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), published a Federal Register concerning a new proposed rule on air quality, chemical substances and respiratory protection standards. As of this writing, their proposed rule has not become a standard. However, with little revision it could be expected to become a standard, and we in the mining industry will be expected to adhere to and enforce it.

Over the last five years, a large number of small to medium sized carbon-in-pulp gold treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 -1,500,000 tpa of ore. In many cases, the primary requirement was to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost, relating to the limited capital resources and tight cash flow positions of these relatively small mining companies. Since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners resulted in an obvious and significant capital cost, most plants were built without thickeners, without doing a detailed cost-benefit analysis on their inclusion, However, the increasing use of High Rate Thickener?s (HRT s) in the mineral processing industries resulted in a reassessment, in some cases, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas, where borefields were costly to install and water was limited. It has become apparent, though, since startup and operation of these installations, that the savings in cyanide consumption is also a very significant factor and can be used as a primary justification for the installation of a HRT in many cases.

INTRODUCTION Coal flotation is a fine cleaning process usually present in all but the older preparation plants. It is typically used to clean either the -28 mesh (-500 pm) or - 100 mesh (- 150 pm) raw coal fines, and it is the only commonly used preparation method that can effectively recover coal particles finer than, say, -200 mesh (74 pm). To place coal flotation into its proper context, it should be noted that the bulk of the raw coal sent to preparation plants is treated by gravity concentration. On a worldwide basis, from 0 to 40% of the raw feed to a preparation plant is treated by flotation, while in the US only about 10% of the raw coal feed is floated. Roughly, 50% of US preparation plants use flotation to process at least a portion of the raw coal feed, although most of the newer plants incorporate flotation into their flowsheet. Historically, the process has only been used to treat the raw coal fines naturally occurring after mining and a minimal amount of crushing at the preparation plant. This is in sharp contrast to ore flotation where, typically, the entire tonnage is first ground and then floated. As a consequence, of the approximately 500 Mt of raw coal treated by preparation in the US yearly, it is estimated that only about 40 Mt are sent to the flotation circuits (producing -30 Mt of clean product).'O1 This small tonnage compares with about 400 Mt of ores treated annually in the US by flotation. By analogy to ore flotation, where it is an effective, large tonnage, low cost, easy to operate process, its potential in coal preparation should be great. Reasons why it has not achieved a greater potential in coal preparation have been attributed by Aplan 102 to: 1. Indifferent results in removing sulfur and ash. 2. Difficulty in floating low rank and oxidized coals. 3. Inability to make clean separations with the finer sizes. 4.Inability to clean slurries with a high percentage of clay. 5. Problems with water chemistry. 6. Competition with effective, gravity coarse-cleaning methods. 7. Low value of coal historically. 8. Dewatering problems. 9. Transportation and storage problems with coal fines. 10. Marketing problems with coal fines. 11. Inadequate attention to the process in the plant. 12. Inefficient use of capital and operating monies. Inadequate attention to procedures, machines, and processes.

The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

Management also must deal with new liabilities created by environmental laws. These laws provide both private groups and governmental agencies with access to the courts to seek penalties, compliance orders, cleanups, or to forestall developments that could affect ecosystems. Environmental laws and liabilities are also affecting commercial transactions, including the availability of financing. Corporate managers must develop new and innovative methods to address these challenges in order to assure both sustainable industrial growth and stewardship of the environment.

Application of Quality Management philosophies and techniques commonly referred to as Managing for Continuous Improvement, Team Management , or Managing for Consistency is required in today's mining, manufacturing, and service industries in order to meet quality demands, beat competition, lower costs, optimize operations, effectively use personnel, improve morale, and enhance profitability. Most of these phiosophies and techniques are known to today's managers but either have fallen into disuse or were never allowed to surface in the corporate environment of the organization. Managers should review and adopt the philosophies and techniques of Quality Management and use them to revitalize their organizations and bring about a "paradigm" shift in the way we manage, thereby achieving the goals listed above.

Earlier publications from The University of Alabama have indicated that column flotation performance is improved when operating at low pulp levels and when the feed is directed into the froth phase. To validate these early observations a series of tests were performed in which the position of the feed entry to the column and the pulp-froth interface were systematically varied. The optimum grade-recovery relationship was achieved with high feed entry (WA) of column height) and very low pulp levels (<10% of column height). The position of the pulp-froth interface appears to be the more critical variable. When operating in this mode (1. e. at low pulp levels) column flotation becomes. in reality. a froth separation process.

Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. This paper presents the results of push-out tests on cement grout plugs in salt. Two expandable cement grouts have been tested. The average interface shear strengths ranged from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses at failure, assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface, were up to eight times higher. Standard deviations commonly reached 20%. Dissolution along the interface was observed, and may have been enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt. This dissolution appears to have reduced bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g. shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

The discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage haloas a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore, coupled to its location relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 107-m (350-ft) level. This case history is presented in the context of its time and was the first volcanogenic ore deposit to be discovered utilizing mercury as a pathfinder in the Canadian Precambrian. The case history also illustrates that the practical application of an innovative technique coupled to a new geological interpretation can result in success, even on a property that was centrally located in a mining district and had undergone intensive exploration efforts over a 38-year period.

This paper presents an analysis of mechanism of secondary fragmentation and respirable dust generation due to regrinding. In continuous miners, the recovered coal and uncleaned coal from the previous cutting cycle have to be transported through the circumference of the cutting drum, subjecting the coal to regrinding. Such regrinding comminutes the coal material utilizing kinetic energy, thus creating a great amount of respirable dust. The mechanism of a single particle subjected to regrinding is analyzed. A mathematical model is developed to describe regrinding in field conditions. The important factors influencing the comminution process are discussed in detail. Utilizing three types of coal seams, laboratory experiments are being carried out with an Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) to quantitatively evaluate the effects of some particular parameters, such as cutting velocity, depth of sump and properties of coal material, on breakage and on the amount of respirable dust generated. An orthogonal fractional factorial experimental arrangement is used to optimize experimental design. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature&apos;s basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

INTRODUCTION The planning process for projects requiring construction of tunnels in urban environments can be highly complex and involves interaction with professionals of many disciplines. Typically the initial step in the planning process is to establish basic design criteria for the tunnel or tunnel system consistent with its intended purpose. Such criteria might include acceptable tunnel geometry, minimum and maximum slope or other associated criteria. Ideally, once the basic criteria have been established, the next step in the process might include establishing technically feasible horizontal and vertical alignment and shaft siting alternatives and developing "ball park" construction and operational cost estimates for the alternatives. Comparisons can then be made regarding the relative technical and economic merits of the alternatives and the most favorable alignment(s) are selected for further study or preliminary design. Typically the last and perhaps the most important task that is conducted during the planning stage includes identifying issues and potential problems to be addressed during the design and construction stages of the project. Many issues warrant consideration during the planning phase of a tunneling project. For the purposes of this paper, these issues can be divided into two broad categories: technical and non-technical. Important technical issues include, among others, general design criteria, geotechnical and geoenvironmental issues, and constructibility issues. Important non-technical issues include, among others, right-of-way and easement related considerations, project scheduling constraints, both short and long term environmental impacts and overall cost/benefit aspects of the project. With respect to influence on the planning process, these two groups of issues often cannot be separated completely. Due to its complex rheological behaviour, shotcrete induces a ground-structure interaction that differs significantly from other types of tunnel linings. For the same reason, the instrumentation of shotcrete linings presents special problems, particularly when it comes to estimating the stresses transferred to the lining during construction. The shotcrete characteristics which affect the stress distribution are initially discussed. Measurements obtained in a recent soft ground tunnel are also presented. The conclusions are aimed at introducing practical recommendations for the design of tunnels where shotcrete is used as initial and/or final support.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

The plant Is then built to the detailed criteria and performance acceptance tested by the owner to see if the as-built mill meets the criteria, This performance testing is critical to the owner; the test must be systematic with sample collection coordinated throughout the plant. This study summarizes the results of various numerical and laboratory experiments per-formed to study the effect of airflow recirculation on gas concentration. The numerical exercises were carried out on a simulated mine ventilation net-work. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Mackay School of Mines&apos; airflow monitoring system in Reno, Nevada. In both cases, the airflow was recirculated through the system by means of a main fan and a set of booster fans. The booster fans were positioned to produce two types of recirculation: In line and Cross-cut. For each type, various recirculation conditions were generated by changing the booster fan pressure. During each test, the gas emission rate at the simulated working face was kept constant. The study illustrates the conditions under which controlled airflow recirculation may be used to solve a district ventilation problem.
