Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming's Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit's hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. Brace yourself-what used to be a 1 billion ton deposit is now a 1 Gt deposit. And that 1520-hp ball mill is now a 1.134-MW ball mill. Beginning with this issue, all engineering units and statistics in MINING ENGINEERING will be reported in SI units. The exception to this is the Technical Papers section, where units may still be reported by dual notation. For the past four years, ME has reported all units of measurement first in SI, followed in parentheses by the equivalent English value. This metrication policy, adopted by the SME-AIME Board of Directors in September 1975, was designed to aid magazine readers through a transitional period from English unit reporting to SI unit reporting. In October 1979, the SME-AIME Publications Board completed the English-to-SI transition by requesting the editorial staff, beginning February 1980, to report exclusively in SI. The Publications Board also requested the editors to prepare a chart of SI conversions useful to ME readers; this information follows on pages 156-157. The What and Wherefore of SI In 1960 the General Conference on Weights and Measures met in Sevres, France, and recommended that a new metric system-one that could uniformly cross all international borders-be adopted to replace all other metric systems. The outcome of this recommendation was the SI system of units, an abbreviation for le Systeme International d'Unites (the International System of Units). It replaces the more familiar cgs (centimeter-gram-second) system and the m/ksA (meter-kilogram-second-Ampere) system. SI consists of seven base units, two supplementary units, and a number of derived units. Other units, called allowable units, may be used even though they are not part of SI. The seven base units are: meter (length); second (time); kilogram (mass); mole (amount of substance); kelvin (temperature); ampere (electric current); and candela (luminous intensity). The two supplementary units are radian, a measurement of plane angle, and steradian, a measurement of solid angle. Supplementary units can be used in combination with SI units, e.g., radiant intensity is expressed in W/sr, watts per steradian. Derived units are combinations of base and supplementary units. Velocity is expressed as meters per second (m/s), and acceleration as m/s'. Using the relation established by Newton's second law of motion, force is expressed as kg-m/s2, more commonly known as the newton (N). Energy (work) is force times distance, expressed as kg-m/s2 and known as the joule (J). Power is work per unit time, expressed as kg, m2/s3 and known as the watt (W). Allowable units are the exception to the rule-they are not taken from base or supplementary units but, nevertheless, are used in the SI system. Volume units are normally expressed as the cubic measure of a length, such as cm 3. But a fluid volume of a cubic decimeter (dm3) is called a liter (L); the "L" is capitalized in another special SI rule to keep the lowercase "1" from being confused with a numeric "1". Other allowable units are degrees Celsius (°C) for temperature; and the minute (min), hour (h), day (d), and year (a) for time measurements. The prefixes in the table on the following page are used with SI units to express the magnitude of a measured quantity. A mill that processes 1000 tons of ore per day would be designated a 1 kt/d mill; a mine producing 10 million tons of ore per year would be called a 10 Mt/a mine. The rule here is to use prefixes that keep the value in a convenient range from 0.1 to 1000. In other words, it would be incorrect to write 25 000 kg-the prefix should be changed to indicate 25 Mt. One of the distinct advantages of SI is that it retains the decimal relation between multiples and submultiples of the base units for each physical quantity except for time. One more rule of SI syntax-numbers are separated into groups of three with a space between each group rather than a comma, e.g., 3,839,174 becomes 3 839 174. By the same token, a decimal number is also broken by spaces, e.g. 0.738153 is written as 0.738 153.

No group has been harder hit by the problems confronting the coal mining industry than small, independent surface mine operators in the eastern US. Burdened by costly government regulations, major capital shortages, declining productivity, high unemployment, and idle and closed mines, many in the industry think the breed will not be able to survive much longer. But there are a few sole owners fighting to remain independent-and succeeding. John Wagner is running a coal stripping operation in northwest Pennsylvania on a unique blend of aggressive management and marketing, support from a team of blue-chip professionals, and some unusual tactics. Though Wagner's approach is hardly an across-the-board formula for survival-he is currently reorganizing under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Reform Act-a look at his operation helps illustrate some of the unique problems confronting eastern surface miners.

Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol's (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

In the process of mining coal today, our greatest asset, the coal miner, is faced with the indirect and direct consequence of underground mining operations. The indirect considerations may be the rank of the coal seam, the amount of overburden, geological factors, seam permeability and cracks. The introduction of newer, bigger and faster coal-producing face equipment having the capability to cut or rip through the bedding planes, cleats and micropores of the coal seam brings about rapid liberation of gas accompanied by greater concentrations of coal dust, has exerted a direct consideration and greater demand upon mine ventilation systems and dust control. The purpose of mine ventilation is to provide sufficient pure air to the miners working underground and to dilute, render harmless, and carry away all the dangerous and noxious gases. The mining operations which create coal dust are cod cutting, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dumping and movement of face equipment. The created fine dust causes the propagation of explosions. When quantities of coal dust with no methane present are raked in a sufficiently dense cloud in the presence of a source of ignition, an explosion is possible.

1. INTRODUCTION In April 1979, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Uranium Milling (NUREG-0511) for public comment. While the GEIS is a broad environmental impact assessment of the U.S. uranium milling industry as a whole, its primary focus is on the issue of uranium mill tailings disposal and long term isolation. In August of 1979, proposed regulations (U.S. Federal Register Notice 44FR50012), incorporating both conclusions of the GEIS and provisions of recent U.S. legislation on uranium mill tailings (Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978--UMTRCA), were also issued for public comment. This paper (1) briefly reviews the major conclusions of the draft GEIS, (2) summarizes the major elements and rationale of the associated, proposed regulations, and (3) reviews some of the major issues raised during the public comment period and changes which the NRC staff expects will be made in finalizing the GEIS and regulations. The risk in summarizing a document of such broad scope and complexity as the GEIS is that the depth of evaluation and the full technical bases for conclusions reached may not be adequately conveyed. Recognizing this, those Sections of the draft GEIS where a more complete discussion of the issues is presented are parenthetically noted in this paper in order to facilitate location of additional background and supporting material. 2. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS In the GEIS, a full range of tailings disposal alternatives was considered. These alternatives ranged from the past practice of doing little or nothing to control tailings, to advanced treatment alternatives such as nitric acid leaching to increase removal of radioactive elements and fixation of tailings in cement or asphalt. Our broad conclusions were: -Any alternative which results in the need for ongoing, active maintenance to assure long term containment, is unacceptable. (12.3.2.1) -Advanced treatment alternatives are unwarranted since they offer uncertain incremental benefits yet involve costs which may be as much as an order of magnitude greater than costs associated with acceptable alternatives. Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.

The importance of coal as a major source of energy used by the steel industry has been increasing due to the gradual changeover from steel- making by the open hearth process to steelmaking by the basic oxygen process. Since the production of steel by the BOF process increases the demand for hot metal, there is a growing need to ensure the supply of coke required for the production of hot metal. Coal used for cokemaking has become, therefore, an increasingly important raw material for the steel industry in recent years. Our current projections indicate that coal will be the source of 71% of the total energy requirements of Inland Steel Company in 1985. As a result of the energy shortages of the last few years, various conservation programs have been initiated by the steel industry to reduce the consumption rate of fuel. The efforts to conserve energy have been successful to a great extent due to the rapid advances made in the technology of ironmaking that facilitated gradual reductions in the quantity of coke used per ton of hot metal produced in the blast furnaces. The decrease in the consumption rate of coke was made possible by the use of improved raw materials, such as iron ore pellets and fluxed agglomerates, the operation with high blast temperatures, the injection of auxiliary fuels, and the enrichment of the blast with oxygen. It is expected that additional reductions in the fuel consumption rate will be possible in the ironmaking operations of the large blast furnaces that are being equipped with facilities for proper burden distribution and for operation with higher blast temperatures at high top pressure. The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of coke quality on the production of BOF steel. The importance of coke quality will be pointed out by discussing the effects of the physical strength of coke on both the blast furnace productivity and the steelmaking operations of an integrated steel plant, such as Inland Stee1 Company.

The department of the Interior is a federation or holding company of several fiercely independent bureaus which have either jurisdiction or expertise - or both - in a wide range of environmental fields. Each bureau is an advocate for its own concerns and an enforcer of its own mandates. This can be confusing to the company operating in the field. I will try to explain our concerns, help you see where we are "coming from," and give you some insight as to how we can help you. Other speakers have stressed the environmental concerns and site selection factors for uranium wastes so I will focus on the concerns of the Department of the Interior and some of the assistance we can give you in this area People are more aware and more concerned about environmental factors now than they used to be. Thus the past decade has brought about an evolution in both siting and design of uranium mill tailings ponds. Site selection criteria used to be simple - find a tract of land as near to the ore supply as possible with enough space and suitable topography for the expected volume of wastes. Site selections in the past have left a legacy of problems to be corrected - radioactive wastes on stream banks and in floodplains, mill wastes in and near established communities, and unprotected wastes subject to constant erosion. This is no longer acceptable environmentally or socially to a newly aware and concerned public. (Series of 30-35 slides showing uranium mine and mill wastes in Western United States. The number of uranium in situ leach operations has increased significantly since 1975. As of May, 1980, there were a total of 27 active projects, including 16 commercial scale operations (or under construction) and 11 pilot scale operations. The south Texas uranium district and Wyoming have been the most prominent areas in early field experiments as well as in commercial application of this new recovery technique, although in situ leach tests are now being conducted in Colorado and New Mexico. The growing number of commercial-scale operations is accepted as prima facie evidence that in situ mining now offers a third option along with open pit and underground mining for winning uranium from sandstone host rocks. It is estimated that in 1979 about 9 percent of the nation's total uranium production was from in situ mining. However in situ mining of uranium is not without its environmental controls. The primary emphasis of environmental controls falls into two catagories; namely, control of the leach solutions during mining and demonstration of ground water restoration. Finally this paper briefly reviews the Bureau of Mines research program in uranium in situ mining.

A heat load analysis of the very hot sub-shaft area of Loraine gold mine situated near Welkom, South Africa, showed. that the heat that needed to be removed to give acceptable wet-bulb temperatures at the working faces could not be done by the normal ventilation air alone, but would have to be complemented with extensive refrigeration. The paper outlines the considerations in selecting the cooling system adopted for this shaft.

Recently, in the United States, questions of possible deleterious synergistic health effects of the gaseous and particulate components in the diesel exhaust and mineral and coal dust have been the impetus for extensive research by several agencies. At the present time, diesel engines are tested and approved for use in gassy and non-gassy underground metal and non-metal mines under Parts 31, 32, and 36 of Title30 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Diesel-powered equipment for use in underground coal mines, though not explicitly addressed in the law, is administered under Parts 32 and 36 of Title 30, with Part 36 being applied in the case of equipment working inby the last open crosscut or in the return airways. Operation of diesel equipment in underground mines has the potential for serious health and safety hazards from the gases, vapors, and particulates in the exhaust. Therefore, various countries have rules and regulations for the safe deployment of diesel equipment. The applicable laws and regulations from several countries who have long experience with diesel-powered equipment in their mines are reviewed. Four major areas have been addressed: (1) testing and approval procedures of diesel engines, (2) ambient mine air quality specifications, (3) frequency of sampling and location of samples, and (4) air quality specifications in splits where diesel-powered equipment are operated. The review indicates that most regulations generally consider four possible hazards: (1) toxic components in the engine exhaust, (2) ignition of flammable atmospheres by the engine or electrical equipment, (3) fire hazards presented by the engine fuel oil and by combustible material that might come in contact with the equipment, and (4) mechanical hazards. There is a remarkable similarity in the laws with regard to engine design, testing and approval procedures. However, the aspects with regard to mine air quality and quantity are quite variable-- from a general statement to very specific standards for many different diesel exhaust constituents. However, the laws with regard to synergistic effects of diesel exhaust components and other mine air contaminants are an exception.

INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.
