A mineral - dressing investigation was conducted to demonstrate the ability of an anionic silica - flotation process to produce high- grade concentrates from submarginal iron ores of the western Mesabi and Menominee ranges . Commercially available equipment and reagents were used . Samples from the Menominee range were exclusively from the Groveland , Mich . , mine and contained hematite as the chief iron - bearing mineral . Bench- scale investigations established that the anionic silica flotation method can function effectively on a variety of undeslimed ores . Continuous tests completed on one Mesabi semitaconite ore and on Groveland mill feed , have verified the validity of the bench research . The Mesabi samples yielded a concentrate containing 60.3 percent Fe and 6.0 percent Sio with an accompanying iron unit recovery at 90.5 percent . Iron recoveries from the mill feed ranged from 79.0 to 87.4 percent .

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

Studies are reported on the structure of coal and coke with the graphical , statistical densimetric method based on the relation between the molecular volume per carbon atom ( M / C ) and the atomic hydrogen - carbon ratio ( H / C ) . Previous work , mostly from chemical and physical investigations , is critically reviewed . Difficulties in evaluating the ring increment are demonstrated for coal and coke for the statistical densimetric method based on the additivity of atomic volumes of constituent elements . A new diagram is presented for the graphical method . Methods are introduced for correcting M /C and H/C for the presence of minor constituents in coal and coke . With the graphical method , the fractions of aromatic carbon atoms in the total carbon atoms are estimated for a coal , a resin , and 5 petrographic components ; the types of condensed structure in the fundamental units of molecules are discussed for these substances , 28 coals , and 6 " average " cokes at 500 ° to 1,000 ° C. It is also shown that the number of rings in the fundamental units of coal generally increases with increasing rank and that of coke , with increasing carbonization temperature .

Beneficiation studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on three samples of low- grade chromite - bearing material from the Stillwater complex of Montana . The objective of the study was to develop methods for recovering chromite from low- grade materials to improve the domestic reserve situation . Samples were obtained from the three largest deposits in the district , Mouat , Benbow , and Gish . The chromic oxide ( Cr₂ 0 ) content of the ore and of the chromite was about the same in each of the samples . The major gangue constituents ranged from clean olivine in the Mouat sample to such altered minerals as serpentine and talc in the Benbow and Gish samples . Tabling , flotation , high- tension electrostatic separation , and combinations of processes were applied to each ore . Treatment of the Mouat sample ( 9.95 percent Cr₂ 0 ) by high- tension electrostatic separation , a combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation , and tabling with middling retreatment resulted in concentrates that graded 42.8 , 42.0 , and 40.7 percent Cr₂03 at chromium recoveries of 85 , 86 , and 84 percent , respectively . Other techniques were less selective . 2 The Benbow sample ( 7.75 percent Cr₂0 ) responded most selectively to tabling with middling retreatment and a combination of tabling and hightension electrostatic separation to produce concentrates of 40.1 and 39.5 percent Cr₂g with each process having a chromium 2 recovery of 69 percent . Response of the Gish sample ( 8.04 percent Cr₂03 ) to the various concentration techniques was about the same as that of the Benbow sample , but in general , somewhat less selective . A combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation resulted in a concentrate that contained 71 percent The Mouat mine was reopened in 1953 when the American Chrome Co. contracted with the Federal Government to produce 900,000 tons of chromite concentrate . The ore , averaging 20.2 percent Cr₂03 , was treated by tabling to produce a 38.5 - percent Cr₂ O concentrate.

Observations made on coking of coal, deposition of soot, dust transport, flame, violence, and related phenomena following experimental coal-dust explosions are summarized. Data are given on gas explosion pressure, flame length, flame velocity, and variation of these parameters with concentration. Conclusions from these observations are useful in preventing similar occurrences in operating mines and serve as a guide in improving safety.

The Burrell methane indicator developed by Col. G. A. Burrell in 1915 was modified during 1918 to the " insulated type " Burrell indicator . Though this instrument has been used in mines since its first introduction , it was not formally approved as safe and efficient for use in gaseous mines until March , 1922. The indicator is built by the Mine Safety Appliances Co. , Pittsburgh , Pa . Approval No. 800 has been assigned to this company covering the device in the form approved . The principle of the Burrell indicator is fairly well known . It works on the same principle as the Haldane apparatus - measuring by means of a graduated scale , the contraction resulting from burning the methane content of an air and gas sample . A given aniount of the mine atmosphere to be tested for methane is taken into the indicator . This sample is then thoroughly shaken with the water in the indicator for one minute . The methane in the sample is now burned for two minutes by a heated platinum coil , which is energized by a small storage battery containing two Edison cells connected in series . After the glower or coil has burned for two minutes , it is disconnected from the battery , and the indicator is again shaken for The amount of contraction observed by reading the height the water rises in the U- tube of the indicator , which is calibrated to register the percentage of gas in the sample . The indicator as approved by the Bureau of Mines is equipped with an Edison M- 8 mine- lamp battery , and with a glass and scale graduated from zerɔ tɔ four per cent methane . The approval of a corbination service that is , an attachment for giving illumination from the same battery from which the platinum glower is operated has been withheld pending the development of a battery with larger capacity . - Under laboratory operating conditions , a single glower was capable of making at least 20 determinations if proper precautions were observed with respect to the use of freshly charged batteries . A battery should be allowed to stand off charge several hours before using in an indicator , as the peak voltage of a freshly charged Edison cell is abnormally high and is likely to send enough current through the glower to melt the platinum wire . Fifty-seven satisfactory operations were obtained from a completely charged battery . The point where the voltage of the cell fell below 2.3 volts with the glower attached was taken as the lower limit of successful operation . A voltage less than 2.3 does not permit the lower to burn at a temperature that will completely burn the gas in the air , thus giving a false indication .

The purification of hafnium by electron- beam melting at moderate energy inputs and at low pressures was examined in detail . Most metallic impurities and hydrogen were removed in the first few minutes of operation ; oxygen , carbon , and nitrogen were removed at a slower rate . Samples treated by electron bombardment suffered a small loss of weight and a gradual lowering of hardness . The magnitude of each change varied with the energy input and the duration of the melt . Analysis of the data confirms the loss of oxygen as a hafnium monoxide . Approximate activity coefficients for other contaminants are given .

Use of digital computers makes possible a more efficient and complete analysis of data from a mineral deposit . This computer program was written and used during an investigation into the efficiency of methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore , wherein it was necessary to make repeated computations involving different combinations of data . The objective of this research was separation of one highly conductive mineral from a second conductive mineral , a procedure which is impractical in commercial electrostatic separators using metal rolls . Such separators permit separation of nonconductive from conductive minerals . A new technique involved use of carrier electrode rolls specially prepared by anodizing and / or oxidizing at high temperatures to form suitable oxide surfaces . Specific oxides included aluminum , copper , and nickel . The significant result provided by the new surfaces was the extension of the separation range to higher conductivities , an extension in relative mineral conductivity from 10-14 mhos . The results are in accordance with the blocking- layer theory .

An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

On account of the extensive use of platinum during the World War , and the practical elimination of the Russian supply , the price of this metal rose to new high levels , as shown in Table 1 ; and though it since receded to some extent , the price is now nearly six times that of gold .

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .

One of the war problems with which the Bureau of Mines is concerned is to increase production of iron and steel , in which coke is one of the major factors . The output of byproduct coke for use in iron blast furnaces is insufficient and is being supplemented by coke from beehive ovens (figs . 1 , 2 , and 3) . Some difficulties that cause a reduction in iron output have been reported in the use of some of the beehive coke.6/ About 20 years have elapsed since beehive coke was made on a large scale , and many of the skilled operators of those days are no longer available . Furthermore , in many instances the quality of the coal supplied to the ovens has not been as good as formerly. The ash and sulfur contents are often abnormally high; and in other instances they vary greatly in amount, so that a nonuniform coke is produced . To assist operators to improve quality and yield of beehive coke , the Bureau of Mines equipped a truck as a field laboratory ( fig . 4 ) and sent the authors with it into the Pennsylvania beehive district . The truck contains necessary equipment for sampling and analyzing coke oven gases , measuring temperatures , screen - sizing coal, and float -and - sink testing coal . Coal specimens may be sent to the Pittsburgh laboratory for analysis . Beehive plants producing good coke were visited first to observe details of operation and to collect data on the operating process . These covered temperatures , analyses of the exit ( or trunnel) gases , and coal quality, and were to be utilized in searching for faults in plants not producing good - quality coke and to assist in improving such plants or their operation .

The recovery of zinc from oxidized zinc minerals by the caustic soda leach and electrolytic or chemical precipitation was investigated . With the exception of willemite ( 2 ZnO • Si0₂ ) oxidized zinc minerals were readily soluble in 180 to 240 g / 1 NaOH solutions . A high- grade zinc flake was recovered electrolytically from solutions which had been treated with zinc powder to precipitate copper and lead . Solutions were recycled to the leach stage with a recovery of about 85 percent of the zinc from an ore containing 21.2 percent zinc . Electrolysis was conducted at a current density of 120 amp / ft2 with a power consumption of about 1.5 kwhr /lb zinc . Zinc was also recovered from leach solutions by dilution of the solutions , carbonation of the solution , or the addition of sulfur to boiling solutions . A dilution ratio of 5 : 1 precipitated 59 percent of the zinc in 9 days . Carbonation of the solutions precipitated the zinc as zinc oxide ( ZnO ) and solutions could be recausticized for recycling . Zinc precipitated as the sulfide with sulfur was easily filtered and washed . Approximately half of the sulfur added to solutions was lost in the form of sodium thiosulfate ( Na S₂03 ) .

The difficulties inherent in the production of alumina by the formation of potassium alum and its subsequent thermal dehydration and decomposition have been overcome , to a large extent , in a process developed at the Boulder City Station of the Bureau of Mines . This process is applicable to the reserves of alunite known to occur in several Western States and , possibly , to certain clay and low-grade bauxite deposits known to exist in this country . The operations sequence of the process is shown in the flow sheet (fig . 1) . Only those steps included within the heavy line are considered in this report . Four different procedures for dehydration of alum were investigated ; ( 1 ) Spray drying , ( 2 ) rotary - kiln drying , ( 3 ) dry grinding in a thermal ball mill , and ( 4 ) dehydration in the vertical- column flash dehydrator . Based upon fuel requirements and other practical considerations , the vertical- column dehydrator , or some modification of its operating principle , offers the botter possibility for commercial use .

The purpose of this investigation was to study the primary materials associated with the coal structure . Mass spectrometric techniques can be useful in studying the chemical structure of coal and various high- molecularweight materials derived from coal . Investigations of pyrolysis products and extracts of coal , and also whole coal , showed : 1. Aromatic hydrocarbons obtained by the vacuum pyrolysis of coal below 300 ° C possibly were sorbed material rather than decomposition products . 2 . 2 . Thirteen structural types having molecular weights from 78 to 400 were identified in pyridine extracts constituting one - quarter or more of the coal by weight . 3. Material extracted at room temperature with a methanol - benzene solvent and a vacuum pyrolysis condensate obtained at 450 ° C contain similar components . The extract and the condensate have approximately the same average molecular weights ( 200-300 ) . 4. Material extracted from coal at room temperature is altered even by mild thermal treatment . 5. Changes in various alkyl series occurring in thermally treated coal extracts can be followed quantitatively . 6. Similarities in the spectra of coal and graphite were indicated in an investigation using a mass spectrometer equipped with a spark source . Determinations on a coal - ash sample by this technique showed good agreement with data obtained by emission spectroscopy .

An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

This investigation was conducted to obtain data on optimum conditions for chloridizing metal sulfides . Salt- roasting galena at 450° C for 8 hours chloridized 75 percent of the lead ; in an equal time of treatment at 750° C , the process chloridized 42 percent of the zinc in sphalerite . Hydrogen chloride at 500° C completely chloridized galena in 15 minutes , and at 600° C converted all of the zinc in sphalerite to the chloride in 4 hours .
