Assure fail-safe stopping of a mining vehicle immediately following a loss of electric power. Approach A separate emergency brake system which actuates when electrical power is interrupted, was installed on several mining vehicles and tested in a long-term underground mining demonstration. How It Works Separate, spring-actuated brakes, which press against brake discs, are used to stop the vehicle following power failure. To allow norm al movement of the vehicle, hydraulic oil under pres? sure from the vehicle's hydraulic system is directed to a spring? loaded piston in each emergency brake housing. That pressure causes the piston to compress the spring and relieves the spring pressure against the puck, thereby allowing the brake disc to turn freely. See Figure 1 A. If the electrical power fails or if the machine is turned off, a valve in the hydraulic line to the emergency brakes opens. That valve, shown as ?Solenoid Valve (automatic)" in Figure 1, which is normally held closed by its electrical solenoid while the vehicle is electrically powered, is opened by the spring in the valve assembly. Crude shale oil prepared by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale was hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at an operating pressure of 1,000 psig, temperatures of 781° and 761° F, and liquid hourly space velocities of 0.10 and 0.05 Vo/Vo/hr, respectively. The yields of total liquid products and the amounts of nitrogen and sulfur removed were comparable with those obtained at an operating pressure of 3,000 psig and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0 Vo/Vo/hr. Approximately 1.5 times as much gasoline was produced at the lower pressure and space velocities.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mine- investigation was to develop columbium and tantalum alloys suitable or u at elevated temperatures. Columbium and tantalum were combined with tungsten, hafnium, zirconium, molybdenum, vanadium, and titanium, and the resulting alloys were evaluated with respect to workability, hardness, electrical resistivity, strength at elevated temperatures, oxidation resistance, and weldability. Cb-33Hf-10W-10Ti, Cb-20111-5Mo, and Cb-30Hf-5Mo exhibited superior high temperature properties. Cb-33Hf-10W-10Ti had tensile strength values of 44,300 psi at 1,200° C and 16,500 psi at 1,400° C, Cb-20Hf-5Mo had values of 35,700 and 20,700 psi, respectively. The corresponding values for Cb-30Hf-5Mo were 38,900 and 17,800 psi. These alloys are fabricable by conventional methods with excellent strength at temperatures up to and including 1,400° C. An oxidation rate of 7 to 21 mg/cm2/hr was observed up to 1,000° C.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. "INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at cement-plant quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

A major purpose of this contract was to evaluate a variety of dust suppressants to determine their effectiveness in mitigating dust from taconite tailings. During the course of the investigation tailings from pilot-plant tests of Minnesota copper-nickel ores became available and chemical binders were also tested for dust mitigation effectiveness on this mineralogically different material. Field-test plots were established on taconite tailings and wind tunnel laboratory tests conducted. The laboratory tests consisted of comparing treated and untreated samples at wind velocities of 40 mph using a weight-loss method and direct dust emission measurements. It was shown that the emission of fine dust from taconite tailings, in the range of 4.5 microns to 0.85 microns, could be reduced by 99 percent using certain chemical suppressants. It was also demonstrated that a straight water spray on coarse tailings (3/4" to + 10 mesh) reduced dust emission by 95 percent. Although eight different chemicals were tested, most of the tests were made using Coherex, ammonium lignin sulfonate and sodium silicate. These same dust suppressants were used, singly and in combination on almost 75 field-test plots. The Coherex appears to provide the best results in terms of economics and durability. Wind tunnel tests on treated and untreated Cu-Ni tailings demonstrated that applications of dust suppressants reduced fugitive fine dust by better than 99 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines made an economic appraisal of the Buttermilk study area, Inyo County, California in October 1980. Results of surveys indicate no potential for metallic, non-metallic, or energy resources in the area. However, glacial till covering most of the area prevented bedrock examinations by the appraisal teams or earlier prospectors. No mining claims are known to be in the area. INTRODUCTION Present Studies The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center, searched county mining claim records and other data available concerning mineral deposits, claims, leases, production, and mining activity in the area. The Bureau conducted field work in October 1980 searching for prospects and claim locations. Fourteen reconnaissance lode and placer samples taken from the area were analyzed for gold, silver, and tungsten; a spectrographic analysis also was run on selected samples.

In seeking substitutes for such critical metals as chromium, cobalt, and nickel, the Bureau of Mines investigated techniques for shape-casting titanium in rammed sand molds. Castings were made in olivine, garnet, chromite, and, for comparison, zircon. It was found that commercial-grade castings up to 31 lb (maximum capacity of furnace) could be made in zircon or olivine molds if a zirconia mold wash was used. Castings up to 4 lb could be made in chromite molds, but heavier castings suffered from some mold-metal reaction. Garnet molds were found to be unsatisfactory for castings of all sizes because of gas blows and rough surfaces. In other tests shell castings of acceptable quality were produced in water-glass-bonded zircon and olivine molds up to weights of 8 lb, but chromite molds were unsatisfactory because rough casting surfaces were caused by mold-metal reaction. Unlike the currently used commercial processes, neither the rammed-sand nor the shell-molding processes developed by the Bureau of Mines generate noxious fumes at any step.

"A million tons of coal mined in the Pennsylvania anthracite region without a fatality is a feat of which to be proud and one that deserves the commendation of the entire mining industry. The average production per fatality in this region for 1933 was 206,823 tons, an exceptional record showing the results of an intensive drive made by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and the anthracite operators and-workers to curtail the high accident rates heretofore prevailing in the region.This paper gives information about a mine with a record five times better than the average which should prove to the industry that mine accidents can be reduced through the proper safety organization and effort. The Pine Hill Coal Co., managed by Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., and located at Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pa., has made such a record at its Oak all colliery by studying its accident experience, realizing the facts, and pursuing a definite safety policy with a view to bettering its accident occurrence.As a direct result of its safety policy this colliery has produced 1,044,000 tons of anthracite without a fatality; within 3 years it has reduced its total accidents from 645 to 105 per year, its compensable accidents from 204 to 45 per year, and its lost-time accidents from 335- to 67 per year. In addition, it has set up a smoothly functioning safety organization that will go fax in aiding in the continuance of this great work of mining anthracite at a lower .cost in human suffering.This circular describes the accident-prevention methods perfected and the results obtained by this colliery in the belief that similar methods will produce essentially similar results at any other colliery where they may be adopted.The writer acknowledges his indebtedness to the officials of the company who furnished him with the details of the safety organization and the data from which this report was prepared. He especially desires to thank Messrs. Stockett, general manager, Wells, general superintendent, Morgan, safety engineer, and Kistler,- statistical department, for their hind assistance.The mine is opened by shafts, slopes, and drifts, a characteristic of minas in the Southern anthracite field. Thirteen different beds of coal are being mined. The thickness of the beds ranges from 3.5 to 16 feet and the pitch from 0 to 900. The roof and floor exhibit the entire range of conditions found in anthracite mines. Table 1 describes the coal seams being worked."

This analysis was conducted in response to concerns raised by the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives regarding the potential impacts on automobile production, GNP and employment resulting from embargoing south African supplies of the platinum-group metals, platinum and rhodium. This analysis should be considered an addendum to the recently released study in which the direct economic costs I of a U.S. embargo on selected South African strategic and critical materials are estimated. The estimated GNP and employment impacts result when a mineral shortage reduces domestic industrial production and are in addition to the direct costs estimated in the earlier study. The direct cost to this nation resulting from a decision to embargo six south African strategic and critical minerals was estimated at $1.85 billion per year during the 1988-1992 time frame of the study. The estimated direct costs include the costs to U.S. consumers resulting from higher strategic mineral prices, lower mineral consumption, and the cost of developing higher cost domestic mineral resources. A large proportion of the costs result from the shortage of the two metals: platinum and rhodium. The average direct annual cost of embargoing is estimated at about $1.4 billion for platinum and $384 million for rhodium.2

On November 15, 1972, the Bautsch mine, a lead-zinc mine in Paleozoic dolomites, experienced a massive rock failure involving 3 to 5 million tons. Because this failure was large and extended to the surface, it was included in the Federal Bureau of Mines investigations on "Massive Rock Failures." Analysis of the rock mechanics and mode of failure revealed that failure at the Bautsch mine was the result of the interrelationship of many factors. Factors related to the failure were found to be external and internal to the mining environment. Unlike internal factors, external factors were not apparent and, therefore, many external factors were investigated; some of which are not normally considered in rock mechanics analyses. External and internal factors determined to be of significant importance were: (1) precipitation, (2) fractures, (3) plastic clay layer, (4) topography, (5) rock alteration, (6) bedding, and (7) mining zone dimensions. Because of the conditions at the mine, failure could have been predicted without extensive instrumentation. Application of basic geologic and engineering principles to the internal and external factors could have predicted failure. Alternately, failure would, in all probability, have been delayed by years if, after 1962, mining had been curtailed in the area of failure.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 350 natural gas samples from 19 States collected during calendar year 1962 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus. Four previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,648 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1962. The first, Bulletin 486, 3/ contains analyses and data on 2,195 gas samples collected during the period 1917-47. Bulletin 576, 4/ the second publication, includes data and analyses for 1,575 samples collected from 1947 through May 1956. The third bulletin 5/ contains 1,444 analyses and source data of samples obtained from May 1956 to January 1, 1961.

Two degasification test boreholes were drilled to depths of 1,238 and 1,212 feet on Bureau of Mines property at Bruceton, Pa., as part of the Bureau's long-range coal degasification program. The holes provided detailed geologic information and geologic sections, which were correlated with regional stratigraphic cross sections prepared by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Gas content determinations and coal analyses were made on the Upper Freeport, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds; gas content of the coalbeds ranged from 53 to 165 cubic feet per ton. Formation pressure and gas flow tests were conducted on selected coalbed intervals in borehole 1; formation pressures ranged from 292 to 473 psig. The middle Kittanning coalbed was hydraulically stimulated using very heavy gelled water, but gas production remained low because gel residue and formation water inhibited the flow of gas. Gas contents in the Clarion, Upper Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds were anomalously low owing to the proximity of porous sand- stones which act as reservoirs for gas migrating from coalbeds.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Low-temperature heat capacities and the enthalpy of formation were deter-mined calorimetrically by the Bureau of Mines for CuO?CuS04. The derived standard entropy (S°298.15) was 40.36±0.04 cal/deg-mole, and the enthalpy of formation (?H°f) was -219.l±0.3 kcal/g-mole. A large thermal anomaly was observed in the heat capacity of CuO?CuS04 at 20±0.1 K. Gibbs energy of formation data are tabulated up to 1,200 K. Construction details of a precision low-temperature adiabatic calorimeter capable of determining heat capacities of solids in the temperature range 5 to 320 K are given. A calibrated miniature germanium resistance thermometer was incorporated into the calorimeter to extend the range of accurate measurements below 15 K. High-resistance dc heater windings were used throughout the cryostat to reduce heat conduction of inner connecting wires.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a method for identifying fine particles of beryl in mineral samples by preferentially staining the beryl grains. The sample is first subjected to a heated sodium hydroxide solution to etch the beryl particles, which are subsequently stained an intense blue color in a boiling alkaline solution of quinalizarin. Positive identification of beryl grains permits quantitative analyses by microscopic techniques. INTRODUCTION Beryl, a beryllium aluminum Silicate, is the principal ore mineral of beryllium. The only known commercial concentrations of this mineral are found in pegmatite dikes of granitic composition. Normally beryl is associated with muscovite mica, quartz, and the sodium-and potassium-bearing feldspars (orthoclase, microcline, and albite). Other beryllium-bearing minerals which are found occasionally in minor amounts with beryl are phenacite, a beryllium silicate, and chrysoberyl, a beryllium aluminate.

"Cellular damage induced by silica dust is known to be associated with increased fragility and destabilization or destruction of the cell membranes. The mechanism by which silica dust effects biological membranes is still unknown. Using the ESR spin-trap methodology, we find that hydroxyl radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground silica. The amount of the radicals generated depends on the extent of grinding and ""freshness"" of the dust. Using linoleic acid as a model lipid, we show that the silica dust causes lipid peroxidation via ·OH, 02-, or linoleic acid related radicals as intermediates. Catalase and superoxide dismutase inhibit the formation of these radicals. The results suggest that free radicals associated with freshly ground silica and the related lipid peroxidation of the memberanes may be the starting point of the silicotic processes.INTRODUCTIONDespite considerable-effort over the years, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrosis are still not fully understood (1,2). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the interaction of the quartz particles with the cell membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (3). We felt that the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz might involve oxygenated free radicals because (a) a suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported.(4,5) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the ;oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids, and (b) hydroxyl (·OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (6) and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes (7). Moreover it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates ·OH. radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (6). Earlier studies o~ the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of HzOz (8), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species, but, we are not aware of any report of the detection of ·OH radicals in quartz suspensions and this provided the motivation for the present undertaking. Since it is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short life time) in aqueous media, the ·OH radicals cannot be detected via electron spin resonance (ESR) directly (9,10), we have used ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (9) for studying the •OH formation."

The purpose of using experimental subjective and/or perception methods is: (a) to understand human subjective impressions of the physical characteristics of vibration; (b) to determine the relationship between the subjective perception of some aspect of the vibration and an evaluation index of the physical vibration characteristics; and (c) the establishment of target values for design of vibration environments in terms of human sensation of vibration characteristics. In order to understand the relationship between a physical measure of the mechanical vibration and the subjectively perceived aspect of the vibration environment, experimental methods shown in Table 1 have been used1. [ ] The constant measurement methods of Table 1 are mainly used for measurement of the threshold of human sense. The subjective scaling methods are mainly used for obtaining subjective (or proportional) scaling between the perceived quantity and physical quantity. In this review, the fundamental approach of experimental methods for obtaining the target values used in the design of vibration environments, and the different findings between the subjectively perceived methods for evaluating human response to vibration characteristics and the physical quantity of the vibration environment are summarized. Fundamentals of Subjective Scaling The relationship between the experimental psychological methods for providing target values in the design of the vibration environments and the physical quantities is illustrated in Fig. 1. Vehicle mechanical vibration can be characterized using many metrics, and these can be considered the ‘input’ to the human. In order to predict subjective responses to the vibration, it is necessary to link the characteristics of the source of vibration and human reactions, the ‘output’.

The first section of this circular has been prepared with a view to answering inquiries frequently received by the Bureau regarding laws governing the staking of claims and regulations covering requirements for holding them and obtaining title in fee to placer ground. These laws and regulations were summarized briefly in Information Circular 6796, "Placer Mining in the Western United States." These laws, however, are administered by the General Land Office, Department of the Interior, and it has been considered advisable to combine an authoritative résumé thereof by the Commissioner of that Bureau with information on small-scale placer mining previously published by the Bureau of Mines. The second section of this circular is largely a revised reprint of Information Circular 6611, "Small-Scale Placer Mining Methods", first published in April 1932 for the purpose of answering the many daily inquiries then being received on this subject. This circular has been reprinted repeatedly, and about 30,000 copies have been distributed, most of them in response to applications therefor. At present (June 1937) requests for this publication continue to be received daily.
