"The prevalence of accidents in the coal-mining industry has prompted a study of the workmen's compensation laws of the various States and the statistics of accident costs, for the purpose of explaining to operators how the compensation laws are regulated and to show the cost of accidents.The subject of compensation laws and accident costs is by no means new, but the prevalence of coal-mine accidents would indicate that the mine operator in general is not thoroughly conversant with their importance. Unquestionably, compensation laws are a large factor in promoting accident prevention, and it is believed that a greater measure of success would be accomplished in preventing accidents if all mine operators were fully aware of their important bearing on the cost of production.Many operators seem to be indifferent to accident occurrence; possibly they do not real¬ize the seriousness of the accident hazards that exist in their mines, even after the hazards are brought to their attention. There is no question that material financial advantages are to be gained by the prevention of accidents and it would appear that when these advantages are thoroughly understood, operators would be anxious to eliminate, insofar as is feasible, conditions likely to cause accidents.The unsettled state of the mineral industry and the irregular operation of mines during the past several years has probably been an important factor in influencing the apparently indifferent attitude of the operator. The chaotic conditions in the mining industry and especially in coal mining are unquestionably a factor that tends to increase accidents, just as mine idleness increases roof hazards and results in deterioration in mechanical, electrical, and haulage equipment, and promotes disorganization of the personnel. During such times greater efforts should be exerted toward the prevention of accidents because of these increased hazards and of the financial advantages brought about by the various savings to be effected when mine accidents are held to a minimum.This report on accidents in the coal mines of Pennsylvania was made possible largely through the cooperation of William J. Maguire, director, Bureau of Statistics, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, and Rush N. Hosier, superintendent, Coal Mine Section, Pennsylvania Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau, who made available their records and extended much assistance and numerous courtesies during this study."

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well-known that there are largo deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stock piled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines. This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3506, Manganese Investigations 1. Concentration of Manganese Ores from the Drum Mountain District, Utah, by S. R. Zimmerley, J. D. Vincent, and C. H. Schack. Other reports will be published as the work progresses.

Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the Sheep Creek prospect in the north-central Alaska Range to evaluate the Pb, Zn, Ag, and Sn resources. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration tests. Mineralization at Sheep Creek consists of disseminated, banded, and massive pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Tin occurs as grains of cassiterite (Sn02) in the quartz-mica matrix and within pyrite and sphalerite grains, and Ag occurs in solid solution within the galena. Three bulk surface samples and two sets of core samples were collected at the Sheep Creek prospect for this study. Gravity concentration yielded products with up to 30 pct Sn, and the best result was a product that recovered 52 pct of the Sn at a grade of 22 pct Sn. Bulk sulfide flotation yielded products that recovered up to 89 pct of the Zn, 73 pct of the Pb, and 75 pct of the Ag, but grades were relatively low; selective flotation would significantly increase the grades.

The objectives of this project were to: (1) determine the extent to which maintainability design concepts and principles have been applied to the design of underground coal mining equipment, (2) try to assess its impact on productivity and personnel safety, and (3) develop maintainability guidelines to enhance the design of new or rebuilt equipment. An equipment design review was completed at ten operational coal mines. The purpose was to identify design approaches and features that enhanced and degraded the maintenance process. Mine management, safety, and maintenance personnel were also interviewed to identify machine specific design problems. Six original equipment manufacturers were visited and the procedures used to enhance the maintainability of Their equipment discussed. Volume I of the Final Technical Report presents an overview of procedures and protocol used and a summary of the findings. Volume II includes the maintainability design guide for mobile underground mining equipment.

1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. Six different types of blasting caps, mainly of the type used in coal mines, were evaluated to determine both their 1lF and DC characteristics. Two of the caps were of foreign manufacture. All the American made caps had "no-fire" (0.1% firing probability with 95% confidence, as determined by the Bruceton test) levels above 0.04 watts. One of the caps of foreign manufacture had a "no-fire" level of 0.023 watts. A worst case analysis of blasting cap pick up of RF power in coal mines was performed and safe distance curves were generated.

Laboratory characterization studies have investigated the processing variability of carbonaceous uranium-bearing materials found in-sandstone deposits. This work was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines in support of its goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Conventional processing produces only partial uranium recovery from these ore materials. Ore samples from New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming were examined, and each responded differently. Using direct acid leaching techniques, some of the ores required acid additions of only 50 pounds per ton, while others required 300 pounds per ton of material. Maximum extractions ranged from 83 to 94 percent in the six ores tested. Roasting those ores prior to leaching improved extraction of the uranium to the 90 to 99 percent range. An oxidative autoclave treatment used with five of these ores resulted in extraction of 78 to 97 percent of the uranium. The experimental studies also showed that some carbonaceous materials can be concentrated by froth flotation. The flotation tailings were amenable to acid leaching, and up to 98 percent of the uranium was extracted from this type of material.

The results of a laboratory research program aimed at the development of a water jet assisted drag bit cutting system for coal mine applications are presented. Two types of drag bits, a conical and a plow bit, were tested in a hard sandstone rock with jet pressures of up to 20,000 psi. Jet locations investigated were in-front and behind the bit. For each jet mounting location, three jet impingement distances with respect to bit tip were tested. The closest jet impingement location to bit tip was found most effective, providing the greatest force reductions on the bit. Overall, significant bit force reductions up to 50 percent were obtained with jet assist. Also observed was a drastic reduction in airborne dust when jets were employed.

This report describes the results of a reconnaissance survey of areas in California and Nevada considered favorable to beryllium mineralization. Pegmatite dikes, veins, intrusive sills, contact. metamorphic, and disseminated deposits as well as tactite deposits in the former major tungsten-producing districts were investigated. A general geographic pattern of beryllium mineralization was found to be concentrated along a wide belt in eastern Nevada extending from the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, south through the Fish Creek Range, Eureka County, the Snake Range, White Pine County to the Virgin Mountains in Clark County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz. Sporadic occurrences of beryllium are in central and southern Nevada, and in the pegmatite dikes of San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, Calif., and the granite masses of the southern Inyo Mountains, Inyo County, Calif. Principal company activities are centered in the Snake Range, Fish Creek Range, and the Virgin Mountains, Nev., and the Inyo Mountains, Calif. Other areas in California and Nevada have been superficially explored with results indicating either limited or widespread, but submarginal, mineralization. Although beryllium was found to occur, to some extent, in many of the deposits, mining has been hindered by the lack of a market for beryllium ores and concentrates other than standard-grade beryl and also by the erratic pattern of mineralization and the high exploration and beneficiation costs required to produce a marketable product.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

This report presents a stress investigation of four coal pillars located under two depths of cover. Each coal pillar was instrumented with ten load cells designed to measure coal pressure during initial and secondary mining. The problem considered was one of uniform triaxial stress as a large coal pillar was loaded under a thick limestone bed. Special attention was given to pillar design procedure. Unconfined uniaxial compression tests were conducted for coal specimens 7/8 in., 2-1/8 in., 3 in., and 4 in. square with length to square side ratios of 1/2, 1, 1-1/2, and 2. Stress-strain curves were recorded. Six specimens were tested at each size. Results show that a coal pillar is composed of an inner zone which is highly loaded plus a region around its perimeter which has lost its elastic strength. The bearing capacity of a coal pillar consists of elastic and crushed coal response: The failure strengths have been determined and will be useful in coal recovery, mine design, and mine safety.

Pitch from low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal was hydrogenated at cracking conditions in a continuous bench-scale unit to produce low-molecular-weight oils and tar acids. The pitch contained 15.6 pct benzene-insoluble material, 4.0 pct hexane-soluble oil, and 80.4 pct asphaltene by weight. At 475° C, 7,500 psig, and 1.5 hours residence time, hydrogenation products, based on the weight of pitch, were about 36 pct oil boiling below 325° C, 24 pct hexane-soluble heavy oil, 17 pct asphaltene, 1 pct benzene insolubles, and 12 pct hydrocarbon gases. The yield of tar acids boiling below 250° C was 4.3 pct, and the yields of C6 to C8 paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics were each less than 1.0 pct. The yield of tar acids was within the range of yields obtained by hydrogenation or high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal (2 to 5 wt pct). Yields of oil boiling below 325° C increased with increased residence time or temperature. There was little or no effect of residence time on yields of alkali- soluble material which contained tar acids. Yields of hydro-carbon gases increased markedly with an increase in temperature from 475° to 500° C. Lowering the hydrogen pressure to 4,500 psig resulted in yields similar to those obtained at 7,500 psig.

The growing interest in beryllium as a structural material, and its in-creased use in recent years for atomic energy application, have led both government and industry to express concern over the inadequacy of the beryllium resources in the United States and the free world. Contemplated and proposed uses for this unique material will surpass the capacity of the domestic beryllium mining industry to supply raw material, which is presently extracted from relatively small deposits by hand sorting. The need for a simple beneficiation process for beryl ores has long been recognized by the Bureau of Mines, but to date no single process has proved satisfactory for treating deposits containing a sufficient tonnage of beryl ore to warrant commercial exploitation. As a part of the Bureau's continuing effort to develop an economical recovery process, this report describes flotation research on samples of beryl-bearing pegmatites from the George Roebling mine in Connecticut, and the Colony mine in New Hampshire. The study resulted in two methods of treatment to which the ores responded reasonably well.

The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1938, 6,4595/ producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356/ acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smackover field, which rose td an average of 444,9508/ barrel daily during that year. "The use of sand for the filtration of municipal water supplies is comparatively recent use in this country, although at the present time, most cities of any size that draw their water supply from surface sources use sand filters in their purification system. Not only are sand filters employed to remove sediment and suspended matter, but they also take out most of the bacteria in the water.The first comprehensive research and study of sand for this purpose was probably that of Hazen for the Massachusetts Board of Health in 1891 and 1892, although sand filters had been employed for a considerable time before, specifications for filter sand drawn since then have been largely based on the results of Hazen's work,The general requirements for filter sand are more exacting than for any of the different kinds of sands, except the chemical specifications for glass sand. Filter sand must be uniform in size and within certain limiting sizes. In addition, it must be clean and free from clay and organic matter and of fairly high purity. Early investigations established the fact that an excess of fine materiel increased the friction and decreased the rate of flow through the filter, and that the size of the finer particles rather than the courser, determined the effective size. Also, that large grains tended to cause irregularities in flow in different parts of the bed. There is no requirement as to grain shapes, except that they be not flat or elongated, since, so far as known, either rounded or angular grains are equally efficient.Based on Hazen's investigations, two factors are quite generally used to control the average size and uniformity of size of the sand. These are defined as follows: The ""effective size"" of a sand is such that 10 per cent by weight of the seed is finer than this size, end 90 per cent is coarser. It is expressed in millimeters, The ""uniformity coefficient"" is defined as the ratio of the size of grain which has 60 per cent finer than this size to the size which has 10 per cent finer (the ""effective size""). It is evident that the smaller this coefficient, the more uniform is the seed. If all the grains were exactly the same size, the coefficient would be 1."

This laboratory has developed a sensitive electro-optical method to quantify the initial rate (R) and total amount.(MAX) of superoxide (SO) produced by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). The method uses a microscope to visualize PAM in culture, and to video record the images during the time the cells produce SO. MAX and R are calculated from measurement of temporal changes in optical density in the images due to precipitated diformazan formed by the reaction of SO, produced by each PAM, with nitroblue tetrazolium present in the culture medium. To date, values of Rand MAX, measured due to adherence of PAM to the dish, have been compared to values obtained when quartz, coal mine dust (CMD), and kaolin were added to the medium (in vitro). R and MAX have also been calculated for PAM lavaged from animals exposed to quartz and CMD in the WVU Inhalation Facility. Presently, experiments are being done using serum which permits PAM to be restimulated by different dusts to help establish a dose response effect, and a means to study the effects of lung surfactant on modifying the toxicity of inhaled dusts. Long term, this methodology should provide useful insight· into establishing the role SO plays in the phagocytosis of inhaled dusts and bacteria, in PAM dysfunction, and in lung diseases such as pneumoconioses. In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.
