Molybdenum alloys with good strength properties at elevated temperatures were produced by the powder metallurgical internal oxidation method previously applied to tungsten and known as oxyreaction strengthening. Commercial molybdenum powders were blended with 0 to 10 pet of a reactive powder, ZrMo2. The effects of composition, blending procedure, and sintering conditions on strength properties at elevated temperatures were studied. Strengthening was attributed to zirconium in solid solution with molybdenum and to the presence of submicrometer particles of Zr02. Several alloys had tensile strength and stress-rupture properties com-parable with those of the best commercial alloys. The maximum tensile strengths obtained were 92 kpsi at 1,200° C and 53 kpsi at 1,316° C. The maximum stress-rupture life at 30 kpsi and 1,200° C was 145 hours.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed personal-computer-based data acquisition, instrumentation, and mine visualization and modeling techniques to evaluate a mine accessway in a deep hard-rock mine in northern Idaho. These techniques were applied to a mine shaft in a large silver mine that has been in operation for many years. A very deep, rectangular, timber-supported shaft extending to depths exceeding 2.3 km (7,500 ft) had been deforming continuously as a result of nearby mining, resulting in operational problems. Preliminary visual observations and rock and support monitoring confirmed that severe diagonal distortion was occurring. Extensive field measurements and data analysis confirmed initial observations, provided insights into the cause of deformation, and defined a general approach to structural modeling. Computer analysis of the problem was initiated by developing a three-dimensional model of the terrain. This represented a volume of rock approximately 80 km3 (40 x 1010 ft3) and an area on the surface surrounding the mine 9 km2 (3 square miles). Based on this model, a three-dimensional, finite- element analysis was conducted to establish boundary conditions for sequentially more detailed two- and three-dimensional submodels of the shaft area. Results from the computer study are being used to develop new approaches to mine design and to provide design guidelines for deep mine accessways subject to severe rock-mass loading conditions.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the complete ternary system K2 HfF6¬K2ZrF6-l.25 weight-percent HF at 40° C. In addition, solubility curves have been established at 25°, 30°, 500, 60°, and 70° C. These solubility data implemented a study of hafnium enrichment in feed solutions for liquid-liquid extraction processes.. Selected K2HfF6-K2 ZrF6-1.25 weight-percent HF mixtures were equilibrated in a constant temperature bath. Compositions of the equilibrated solutions and wet residues were established from combined hafnium and zirconium oxide and total fluorine analyses. All solubility curves were essentially parallel on triangular coordinates. At 40° C, the solid phase of the K2HfF6-K2ZrF6-1.25 percent HF system is a series of solid solution hydrates with K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H2O segments existing at the respective extremes. Since this system contains K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H20 segments, it is not ideal for simple separation of high-purity K2HfF6 from K2HfF6-K2ZrF6 mixtures by recrystallization. However, it would be useful for producing hafnium-enriched feed solutions from zircon concentrates for liquid-liquid extraction of hafnium from zirconium.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the up-and-down method with factorial designs to determine if shorter, and therefore less costly, trial sequences could be used. Although sequences of 50 trials are usually recommended, sequences of 20 trials were arbitrarily chosen for the experiments with permissible coal mine explosives described in this report. These explosives were fired from a cannon pointed into a flammable natural gas-air atmosphere at the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center gallery to ascertain their safety properties. The investigation demonstrated that the shorter sequences led to useful conclusions with a reduction in cost of the experimental program.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 6,022-acre Spring Basin Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-009) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is in Wheeler County about 13 miles southwest of Fossil, Oregon. No mineral resources were identified. The area is underlain by volcanic flows, domes and sediments ranging in composition from olivine basalt to rhyolite of the Clarno and John Day Formations. There are three mining claims in the study area, all apparently located for lapidary material. Samples of agate were of poor quality. Four of 13 alluvial samples, two inside and two adjacent to the area, contained gold; content ranged from 0.0000097 to 0.00416 troy ounce per cubic yard. About 23 percent of the Wilderness Study Area is covered by oil and gas lease applications.

This report summarizes a Bureau of Mines study on the use of geotechnology to identify and reduce ground control hazards at slate quarry operations in eastern Pennsylvania. The major ground control hazard is falling rock, attributed to weathered bedding plane faults, which weaken quarry highwalls. It was demonstrated that these faults can be detected outside of the quarry perimeter using surface resistivity measurements. Falls of ice from quarry highwalls constitute a second major hazard, which requires water diversion as a basic control method. In situ stresses seemingly cause only minor problems in slate extraction although they could interact with developed stresses and lead to failure of barriers between quarries. Pull tests showed that rockbolts anchor firmly in slate and should prove effective in securing loose rock.

These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure., but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo,, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of intolerability which -accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a nonodorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mine in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. The present study uses rock deformation measurements to validate and calibrate a geomechanical model of the experimental Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL) stope on the 5,100-ft level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The calibrated three-dimensional, finite-element model and measurements of rock mass displacement show a correlation of 0.795. The calibration reduces rock mass modulus to 14 to 17 pet of laboratory values and rock mass strength (with an energy rule) to 37 to 41 pet of laboratory values. This model suggested that stress-related ground control problems would be encountered west of the stope where the vein makes a right-angle turn and then splits. Rock burst activity was concentrated in this area during mining of the LFUL stope.

The merits of the various methods for dry-quenching coke have been the subject of numerous publications and almost equally numerous controversies for the past 40 years.5/ Most investigators have concluded that dry quenching is advantageous. Some have based their arguments on the improved physical properties of the resultant cokes. Others have claimed little or no improvement and have based their arguments on the economies acquired from the recovery and utilization of sensible heat. The extent to which the method of quenching influences the properties of the resultant cokes is of importance in connection with the operation of both commercial and experimental ovens. On the other hand, the recovery and utilization of sensible heat are economic problems related solely to commercial oven operation and- depend on the method of dry quenching used and the demand for a low intensity energy source. The scope of the present Bureau of Mines investigation has been limited to a comparative study of the properties of wet- and dry-quenched cokes produced from six coals and blends carbonized at flue temperatures of 2, 000° and 2,400° F. in the Tuscaloosa oven.

Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. A gravimetric method for the determination of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and oxygen in blast furnace top gas is described. Nitrogen may be determined directly by volume measurement or by difference. The method is direct, permits continuous as sampling, and provides an averaged analysis over a selected range of sampling intervals from 1/2 to 24 hr or more. Neither expensive equipment nor specialized personnel are required. The method is suitable for routine analysis, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by established methods.

The Bureau of Mines conducted compressive strength tests on model pillars of selected rock types with each pillar containing a critically oriented plane of weakness. The objective of these tests was to determine if a significant increase in the strength of the model pillar could be obtained by either (1) installing tensioned rock bolts through the pillar and normal to the plane of weakness, or (2) wrapping tensioned steel wire ropes around the pillar at uniformly spaced intervals along the pillar. Equations based on Coulomb's failure criterion are developed to predict uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars that are either rock-bolted or wire-roped. Laboratory compressive strength tests on unbolted and bolted model pillars of sandstone, marble, Indiana limestone, and oil shale containing a plane of weakness oriented at 45° showed that the bolted pillars are stronger than the unbolted pillars by 84, 31, 52, and 28 pct, respectively. Laboratory compres-sive strength tests on nonroped and roped model pillars of Texas limestone, sandstone, and granite containing planes of weakness showed that the roped pillars were stronger than the nonroped pillars by factors ranging from 1.01 to 2.41, depending upon the angle of the plane of weakness and the rock type. Rocks with a low Young's modulus benefited most by the wire-roping technique.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly dissem-inated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. postflocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pet. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s).

Composite diaphragms were used in the investigation of electrowinning Ti from TiC14 in a fused LiCl-KCI-TiC'2 electrolyte. Composite diaphragms tested were of two general classes--those consisting of two or more solid materials, and those which contained, in addition, a loose material. An electrowinning cell using a flat diaphragm is described. The maximum current density for these diaphragms was 300 amp per ft2. Lower currents permitted longer operation times. The composite diaphragms gave electrode efficiencies that averaged approximately 60 percent, and the electrowon titanium was of good quality--some Brinell hardnesses were as low as 68.

This report compares a proposed 10/60 "piggyback" 02 generating self-rescue unit to the standard CO self-rescue unit with respect to work task interference. A simulated low seam coal mine was constructed and subjects performed locomotion, shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks with the 10/60 or self-rescuer attached to their belts. Task completion time was longer on all tasks when wearing the 10/60 unit, although only locomotion was statistically significant. The 10/60 unit was bumped over 100% more often than the standard self-rescuer. Implications for design of the proposed 10/60 container are: 1) unit?s container must be extra durable to withstand the added abuse it is likely to receive by low coal miners; and 2) extra consideration must be given to preventing the device from slipping on the belt while working, especially in low coal.

The vapor pressures of liquid titanium and liquid platinum were studied under the Bureau of Mines program for the determination of thermochemical data on the transition elements. Beating was done in a 2-kw electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible to contain the melt. Temperature was measured with a disappearing-filament brightness pyrometer. The vapor pressure data for liquid titanium in the range 2,008° to 2,379° K are represented by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 6.268 - 22, T] Two series of determinations were made on liquid platinum. Results of the first series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 8.240 - 30,460T] for the range 2,0860 to 2,4200 K. Results of the second series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 7.795 - 29,580 T] in the range 2,045° to 2,442° K. Third-law evaluations of each series gave mean standard heats of sublimation of 112.4 kcal/mole, 133.3 kcal/mole, and 133.8 kcal/mole for titanium first series on platinum, and second series on platinum, respectively. Second-law heats of sublimation and equations for heats, free energies, and entropies of vaporization were obtained from sigma plots of each data set.

In 1820, about half of the elements had. been discovered; of these discoveries, Swedes had made 15 or more, about once-third of the elements then known and nearly half of those discovered after 1700.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of its program of promoting safety in mining and other industries, the Bureau of Mines investigates the explosion hazards of combustible Gases, vapors, and solids. It also investigates various means and methods of controlling and mitigating explosions.Dichlorodifluoromethane, CC12F2, has been found to be very efficient as a quenching agent for methane flames. 4/ This substance is a gas at ordinary temperatures and pressures and is relatively nontoxic and stable at mod rate temperatures.Tremendous quantities of dichlorodifluoromethane were used daring the late war as an expelling agent for aerosol mixtures in ""aerosol bombs."" At one time during the war the demand for Dichlorodifluoromethane became so gent that there was barely enough of it to supply the Army and Navy and virtually none for civilian needs. During this period of scarcity the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Bureau of Entomology, Department of Agriculture, investigated the possibility of substituting other materials in part for the dichlorodifluoromethane. It was required that the resulting mixtures be satisfactory expellant and noninflammable under all normal conditions of use."
