The objective of the project descibed in this report was to design and field test a model health and safety program at a coal mining company and a gold mining company. The model program was implemented primarily by providing training on loss control, accident investigation, and the operation of mobile equipment; and by providing technical assistance to help solve health and safety problems. Data were obtained from company records on occupational injuries, illnesses, accidents, and "near misses"; and through direct observation of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs. At the coal mine, employees were observed five times over a 15-month period. At the gold mine, employees were observed six times over a 16-month period. During the study, the percentage of sampled jobs containing one or more safety deficiencies decreased from 74.3 pct to 36.6 pct at the coal mine and from 86.4 pct to 19.1 pct at the gold mine. Work on this project was performed by Woodward Associates, Inc., under a Bureau of Mines contract.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 319 petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 1957 capable of processing 9,123,674 [ ]-barrels of crude oil daily. This was the first time in eleven years that the total number of refineries increased. The crude throughput capacity of the refineries increased 491,284 barrels daily (6 percent) above the January 1, 1956 capacity. The East Coast and Texas Gulf Coast refining districts accounted for 60 percent of the additional capacity installed. Three new refineries were put into operation on the East Coast during the year with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 154,434 barrels while the other refineries in the district report a net loss in capacity, installing equipment capable of processing 140,000 barrels, but dismantling equipment with a capacity of 150,100 barrels. In the Texas Gulf Coast district, one new refinery with a daily crude oil capacity of 5,000 barrels was placed in operation in 1956 and 143,700 barrels of crude capacity was added to existing refineries. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased from 27,145 barrels daily to 28,601 barrels in 1956.

The Bureau of Mines measured vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary system SnCla-ZnC12 by the static pressure method. Equations expressing the vapor pressure) and the heat and free energy of vaporization) as functions of temperature were developed by numerical analysis based on the sigma-plot method. It was found that the vapor pressure of any SnCl2-ZnCl2 mixture) at any temperature within the range of this investigation) could be accurately calculated from the derived values for the heat and free energy of vaporization for the mixture, with a probable error of 0.01 cm Hg or less.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

"INTRODUCTION The U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. At that time the common types of absorbent, materials were compounded ones containing the above ingredients as well as kieselguhr, paraffin, gas oils, charcoal, bituminous coal, etc.Kuryla and Clevenger4 investigated absorbents of the above type and made the following statement concerning them:"

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series and describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Logan County, W. Va. According to present-day standards for metallurgical coal, many believe that the sulfur content of the coal should not exceed 1.25 percent? Coal with more than this amount has been used for making metallurgical coke, especially when blended with coal containing less sulfur. In this series of reports 1.25 percent sulfur is used as a gage to determine whether or not a coal will be suited for metallurgical coke.

Spark ignition of combustible-gas mixtures is a relatively old subject of investigation and has been treated both experimentally and analytically by many people. Elements of static and current electricity are almost always present in mining and industrial operations, and the spark can be an extremely efficient source of ignition. Thus the practical interest of such problems as the "intrinsic safety" of electrical apparatus is obvious. Ignition and quenching phenomena are the primary laboratory representatives of combustion phenomena that are dynamically nonsteady, and such nonsteady phenomena playa considerable part both in industrial processes and in safety matters, although they are of less immediate practical interest. Considerable effort has been expended by the Federal Bureau of Mines in investigations of spark ignition.5 6 7 8/ Primarily, this work has established the significance of several of the parameters involved. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made, Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Profits in the crushed-stone industry, as in any other, represent the difference between selling price and production cost. When consumer demand increases rapidly, as occurred in the crushed-stone industry from 1918 to 1927, selling prices tend to rise. Cost of production usually rises, also, owing to the expense of expanding facilities, searching for and developing new quarries, and purchasing, installing, and operating new equipment. Frequently, also, the inattention of managements to the details of operating costs is responsible for their increase. This is not due to negligence but rather to the necessity of confining attention to the problems involved in producing material to supply orders. When market conditions change and consumer demand becomes stabilized or contracts, the producer r s attention usually is directed to assuring the orders necessary to keep his enlarged facilities busy. Hence, competition increases and soiling prices decline.

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.

A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. "The in vivo toxicity of vanadium(V) has been found to correlate with the depletion of cellular glutathione and related non-protein thiols. With a view to understanding the mechanism for this observation, we have investigated the oxidation of glutathione, cysteine N·acetylcystcinc and pcnicil· lamine by vanadium(V), using electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology. The spin trap used was 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline I-oxide (DMPO). It is found that the oxidation of these thiols by vanadium(V) generates the corresponding thiyl radicals and vanadilim- (IV) complexes. The results suggest that free radical reactions play a significant role in the depletion of cellular thiols by vanadium(V) and hence in vanadium(V) toxicity. 1. INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports on the identification of thiyl radicals formed as intermediates in the reaction of vanadium(V) with glutathione (GSH) and related nonprotein thiols. This study was undertaken because the biochemical mechanism of vanadium toxicity is still not fully understood,. despite being a topic of current research activity [1-20). As to possible clues, it is known that vanadium is most toxic when administered in its pentavaient state [21), and that vanadium(V) administration into laboratory mice reduces cellular levels of NAD(P)H and GSH [22). While the oxidation of NAD(P)H by vanadium has been studied extensively [16-20), that of glutathione and related non-protein thiols has been paid less attention. On the other hand, GSH and related thiols are important cellular antioxidants [23). Their functions include decomposing lipid peroxides and protecting cell membranes [23-25). Thus any reduction in the cellular contents of such nonprotein thiols after vanadium exposure may result in the accumulation of lipid peroxides which might ultimately lead to tissue injury. With a view of finding the mechanism for this thiol depletion process, we have investigated reactions of non-protein thiols with vanadium(V). Particular attention has been paid to the detection of thiyl radicals, since it has been postulated [l] (but not experimentally proven) that the glutathionyl radical (GS·) might be an intermediate in the reaction between vanadium(V), NADH and GSH. We have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology for investigating the reactions of GSH, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and penicillamine with vanadium(V). The results show that the corresponding thiyl radicals are indeed formed in the one-electron reduction of vanadium(V) by all of the above mentioned thiols."

The Bureau of Mines has upgraded high-iron domestic chromite concentrates by a carbonyl process. The upgraded chromite concentrates show as much as 10 wt pct higher Cr203 content and up to a threefold in-crease in the Cr:Fe ratio, compared with the starting concentrates. The high-iron chromites were first reduced to convert the iron oxides to the metal, and then treated with CO at elevated pressures and low temperatures to convert part of the metallic iron fraction to iron pentacarbonyl. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of H2S in small quantities. The iron pentacarbonyl was extricated from the con-centrate in the pressure reactor during carbonylation by a CO sweep through a pressure-reducing valve and passed through a decomposer at atmospheric pressure to convert it back to iron metal and CO. CO pres-sure, temperature, promoter trends, and other factors enhancing iron pentacarbonyl formation are presented.

Gasoline and other liquid fuels may be obtained from coal by direct and indirect hydrogenation.3/ The direct process, usually termed the coal-hydro-genation or the Bergius process, was patented in Germany by F. Bergius in 1914 and developed to a commercial stage by the inventor and I. G. Farben-industrie. From a chemical point of view, the coal-hydrogenation process consists of adding hydrogen to the complex coal molecules and removing oxygen so that its chemical constitution is changed to that of petroleum, whereupon the coal substance liquefies, yielding an aromatic crude oil. In the indirect-hydrogenation process, known as the Fischer-Tropsch process (invented by Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in Germany), coal, lignite, or natural gas is first converted to water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This mixture of gases, in proper proportion and after suitable purification, is then passed over a solid catalyst at relatively low pressures (1 to 20 atmospheres) and temperatures ranging from 180° to 260° C. The products obtained are gasoline, Diesel oil, liquefiable gases, and paraffin wax.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the model BT 300 C-D blasting machine tester, manufactured and distributed by Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. (REO), to determine whether the tester performed as stated by the manufacturer and responded satisfactorily to electrical faults introduced into the blasting machine circuit. Tester readings were recorded for 13 blasting machines and for 12 circuits constructed to simulate the electrical parameters of actual machines. The tester readings were acceptable for all of the blasting machines, although the switch position assigned to one machine produced an off-scale reading. The tester responded satisfactorily to the simulated circuits and detected serious voltage or capacitance faults when they were introduced. However, it did not respond accurately to certain resistance faults. Temperature tests were also made, and the tester performed equally well at temperatures of 20°, 42°, and 81° F. This tester was judged a useful accessory for field checking blasting machines for defective batteries and capacitors, despite its limitations. It is recommended that the tester manufacturer specify the lowest acceptable reading at which a blasting machine may be used and below which the blasting machine should be returned to the laboratory or manufacturer for maintenance.

The Bureau of Mines recorded and analyzed overpressure levels for three production blasts at the White Pine copper mine, Upper Michigan, to obtain representative data from single-heading blasts in a long, straight haulageway and to estimate the damage potential inherent in production blasts fired in close proximity to underground structures. Commercial pressure gages with a flat response to 1 kHz were used with an FM tape recorder to record the overpressures from one dynamite and two AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil), 500-msec production blasts having zero-delay charge weights of about 75 lb (34 kg). The recorded waveforms from the underground blasts (1) were more complex than the typical free-air wave, (2) were of longer duration, and (3) had numerous secondary arrivals due to reflections from the ribs and roof. The waveforms showed that the zero-delay charges produced the only high overpressures. First pulse peak overpressures from the blasts ranged from 0.10 lb/in2 (6.9 X 102 N/m2) at a distance of 471.1 ft (144 m) to a maximum of 1.76 lb/in2 (121.3 X 102 N/m2) at 191,7 ft (58.4m) from the blasts. An analysis of variance of the first pulse overpressures from the three White Pine blasts showed that no statistically significant difference existed among the overpressure levels from the dynamite and AN-FO blasts and that a single equation P = 4.9 x 103 (D /W1 / 3) 2 .15, where P = overpressure in pounds/inch2, D = d-stance from the blast in feet, and W = zero-delay charge weight in pounds, could be used to describe the falloff of overpressure with distance.

This report summarizes work performed under USBM Contract No. J0100047 revealing the performance characteristics of a composite-type resilient screen deck. The ability of the composite to perform or compete with steel in noise attenuation and longevity was of interest. Tests were conducted at the River King Preparation Plant of Peabody Coal Company. This facility was chosen because it provided parallel process flow and met standard coal cleaning requirements. Comparisons could be made between the adjacent resilient and steel screen decks under similar operating conditions. Noise reductions of 1-6 dBA were realized in the near field. Although the test period did not determine resilient screen life, indications are favorable for their longevity.

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."
