This Bureau of Mines report summarizes some recent results on the sensitivity of various experimental explosive systems using ammonium nitrate (AN) as the oxidizing agent. The sensitivity survey included drop-weight and friction testing and sensitivity to initiation by projectile impact and a No.8 blasting cap. It was found that certain types of AN prills can result in cap-sensitive mixtures when combined with No.2 diesel fuel (Fa); prilled AN mixed with nitromethane also result in cap-sensitive mixtures. Mixtures of AN prills and neat 1-and 2-nitropropane were not cap-sensitive, and the use of powdered or grained aluminum in AN-FO did not adversely affect the sensitivity except possibly to increase its sensitivity to friction.

Design, fabricate, and test a machine capable of operating in coal seams 48-inches and thicker that can reduce the time, expense, and injury potential inherent in extending and retracting mine-wide section belt conveyors, while eliminating the need to use additional machinery or equipment in accomplishing such moves. The Problem Many underground coal mines use a belt haulage system to move cut coal from the face to the loading area. This system usually consists of a main line belt conveyor fed by section belt conveyors. A shuttle car at the face carries the coal cut by a continuous mining machine to a feeder breaker that breaks the large lumps of coal into smaller, transport-able pieces and unloads them onto the tail piece of the section conveyor. This tail piece is skid-mounted so it can be readily moved as needed. The conveyor is kept close to the face during mining in order to shorten the haul distance of the shuttle cars. Section belts can be lengthened by adding belting, wire rope, and support hard-ware. During pillar retreat mining, these section belts are shortened to keep pace with pillar extraction operations. However, these belt moves, either the extensions or retractions, usually require six to eight workers and three to eight hours to complete. In addition, a 100-foot belt move requires workers to handle up to 4,000 lbs. of material, not including the tail section. Strain and sprain injuries can be incurred during this heavily labor-intensive task. The time required to move the section belt can also create losses in the mine's production. Detonators representing a sampling of various domestic commercial delay detonators were fired at various direct-current (dc) firing levels. Results of firings using well-below-recommended firing levels showed marked increases in delay times above the nominal values. There was also a marked increase in variation, to the extent that out-of-sequence firings would be essentially assured in any typical blasting round at these low firing levels. Within the range of recommended levels the effects of current increases were not considered to be of great importance relative to other overriding effects, such as the significant difference noted in average values of detonators from different lots having the same nominal delay. This effect, when combined with the normal variation noted among members from the same lot, would cause out-of-sequence firings with detonators from a neighboring delay period. Where comparisons with results from another study were possible, it was found that both studies observed quite similar variations in delay times about the average values, and a lower probability of out-of-sequence firings for the shorter delay period groups. The criterion of the previous study for assessing the likelihood of observing out-of-sequence firings, when applied to the Bureau of Mines data, properly identified two neighboring delay period groups where out-of-sequence firings would occur.

[Apparent progress in fuel economy at petroleum refineries, as measured by the average amount of .seat units required to refine a barrel of crude oil, received a set-back in 1935, when the average rose to 562,00 B. t. u., compared with 562,000 B.t.u. in 1937 (see fig. l). The primary factor in the rise in average heat requirement's per barrel of crude oil refined in 1938 wan the decline in total runs to Invariably the average requirement increases when crude ins to stills decline, and vice versa. In other words, annual gains in fuel efficiency at refineries arc masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Additional crude runs give lower average e heat requirements in two ways - first, because they are mane with the c expenditure of comparatively small amounts of auxiliary heat, and, second, because the additional runs generally represent simple topping operations. In 1938 crude runs, to stills declined 1.6 percent (from 1,183,440,000 barrels in 1937 to 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938), but the total heat consumption declined only 0.4 percent, or from 663,866 billion B. t. u. in 1777 to 660, 56 billion in 1938 .]

THE WORLDWIDE economic expansion that has characterized the first 3 years of the 1960's continued through 1964 and was reflected in North America by strength in the industrial economy of the United States, which again was dominant. Advances in production were recorded in virtually all industries, including the mineral industry; 1964 mineral production established a new high, 5.4 percent above the previous peak recorded in 1963. However, the percentage increase in value of North American mineral production was slightly below overall economic growth. For industry in general, consumer demand held firm throughout the year and overall commodity prices averaged 2 percent higher than in 1963. Wages and salary payments also were up. With the single exception of the dock strike in the United States, the year was free of serious labor troubles and unemployment in both Canada and the States was at a low level. Despite the Viet-Nam situation, relatively tranquil international relations contributed to the forward movement of North American business. Total gross national product (GNP) for Canada and United States, in current dollars, was estimated at US$672.2 billion; 6.8 percent above the previous year's figure. Combined national income in 1964 amounted to US$546.9 billion, which was nearly 7.0 percent more than in 1963. In 1964, gains were recorded in each of more than 50 metals, nonmetals, and fuels commodities that comprise the North American output. The greatest category increase was 13 percent in metals, which was in part attributable to the 14 percent rise to a new record in value of iron and steel in United States, a 29 percent higher value of Canadian iron ore and a 57 percent rise in Canadian zinc. Despite a moderate decline in prices of iron ore and iron and steel products, generally favorable markets and rising prices for metallic ores and metals were a stimulant to the metals industry. Nonmetallic materials, with a total value in excess of US$5.25 billion were 7.3 percent higher than in 1963. "INTRODUCTION Pilot-plant studies on processes for converting low-grade domestic manganese ore to high-grade oxide or sulfide products by pyrometailurgical process was initiated at the Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station in 1942. These investigations were given impetus by the possibility of a national shortage of ferro-grade manganese oxide for war needs.The manganese ore employed-in most of the pilot-plant smelting tests was from the manganosiderite-nodule deposits at Chamberlain, S. Dak. This deposit although low-grade, is extensive and represents, the largest reserve of manganese in continental United States. 6/ The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a Carryall mining-conical rolls treatment method that shows promise of making possible economic removal and subsequent beneficiation of the nodule-bearing shales. 7/ Smelting tests were made also on Artillery Peak, Ariz., mill concentrates in the productions of unrefined manganese matte for the steel The pilot-plant smelting program was based upon the fundamental fact that manganese, like copper, will sulfidize and become miscible with FeS. The matte this formed represents the initial smelting step in the pyrometallurgical treatment of the beneficiated ore. The concentrated nodules containing about. 18 percent manganese were smelted with varying amounts of pyrites and appropriate fluxes to produce Mns-FeS mattes containing 16 to 50 percent manganese. When the manganese and iron was completely sulfidized, the mattes contained 16 to 23 percent manganese. Reducing the pyrite resulted, of course, in the selective sulfidization of manganese and the production of a matte containing a correspondingly higher ratio of MnS to FeS. Complete sulfidization smelting produced slags of lower manganese content and hence resulted in higher manganese recoveries in the matte."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindablity index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in the coal.

Compilation of data on materials of metallurgical interest is one of the important activities of the Berkeley Thermodynamics Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Recent renewed interest in metallurgy of vanadium renders the present compilation a timely guide for experimentation to improve present methods or to develop better methods of extractive metallurgy. Thermodynamic data for vanadium and its inorganic compounds have been critically surveyed, selected, and compiled into one convenient reference from which information can be readily obtained for evaluating heat balances, determining trends, and establishing limits of metallurgical processes. By indicating the direction of experimentation, this report enables the saving of time, effort, and expense which would otherwise be necessary for trial and error experimentation. Much of the data has been obtained experimentally at the Berkeley laboratory. Other data were collected through an extensive survey of worldwide literature through April 1965. Estimates were made when no data were avail-able. Data on the vanadium halides was sparse, and the results derived from existing data were at times divergent. Some of the selected values for the halides may need modification as more or better experimental data become available.

Problem: CFOI and SOII data show that 2,287 U.S. workers died and 32,807 workers sustained days away from work due to electrical shock or electrical burn injuries between 1992 and 1998. Method: The narrative, work activity, job title, source of injury, location, and industry for each fatal electrical accident were examined. A primary causal factor was identified for each fatality. Results: Electrical fatalities were categorized into five major groups. Overall, 44% of electrical fatalities occurred in the construction industry. Contact with overhead power lines caused 41 % of all electrical fatalities. Discussion: Electrical shock caused 99% of fatal and 62% of nonfatal electrical accidents. Comprising about 7% of the U.S. workforce, construction workers sustain 44% of electrical fatalities. Power line contact by mobile equipment occurs in many industries and should be the subject of focused research. Other problem areas are identified and opportunities for research are proposed. Impact on Industry: Improvements in electrical safety in one industry often have application in other industries.

This paper, describing the concentration methods and costs of Witherbee, Sherman and Company at Mineville, N. Y., is one of the series of papers on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. It deals principally with the production of high-grade concentrate. Improve the effectiveness of person-wearable self-contained self rescuer (PWSCSR) training by enhancing the memory retention of trainees in proper donning procedures. Background In the fall of 1989, a total of 185 miners and inspectors were trained by Bureau of Mines personnel to don the SR-100 PWSCSR using the Bureau's 3+3 method. With the exception of a few individuals, miners were trained underground in an area set up within their working sections. The instructional protocol was as follows: (1) after placing an SR-100 simulator (equipped with a cleaned and disinfected mouthpiece assembly) on the mine floor in front of the worker, a researcher guided him or her step-by-step through the complete donning procedure, (2) the miner was required to perform each step slowly, methodically, and correctly while being talked through the sequence, (3) following this pre-practice instruction, the apparatus was repacked and the subject donned the device without coaching, while being evaluated, (4) if an error was made, the worker received corrective feedback, the unit was repacked, and the entire donning trial was redone. This procedure was repeated until the miner achieved a perfect 3+3 sequence.

This report is the second of a series of three that will evaluate, in order, the metallothermic, carbothermic, and electrolytic methods of magnesium production. The historical development of the carbothermic process is outlined. Production costs varying from 38.9 to 21.8 cents per pound of magnesium are estimated for different versions of the process. Additional suggested process modifications are listed. The technical and economic potential of the different versions are compared. Areas deemed most promising for future research on the process are delineated.

"INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."

Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

"Health hazards in the mining industry may be attributed to (1) abnormal conditions of the air, (2) improper sewage disposal, (3) bad drinking water, (4) bad illumination, and (5) local mechanical irritation.Abnormal conditions of the air may be due either to physical or chemical changes. The physical changes are (1) abnormal temperature, (2) abnormal humidity, (3) air movement, and (4) presence of dusts. Dusts may be either poisonous, as salts of lead, arsenic, zinc, or mercury; or nonpoisonous, as dust from coal, silica or quartz, limestone, gypsum, or silicates. Chemical changes may be due to changes in the normal constituents, as lowered oxygen or increased carbon dioxide; or to the addition of abnormal constituents, as carbon monoxide (white damp), hydrogen sulphide (stink damp), sulphur dioxide, methane (marsh gas, fire damp), hydrogen, and nitrogen.Effects of High Temperatures and Humidities The effects of various temperatures and relative humidities have been studied in mines in many countries. Harrington and myself studied them in the metal mines of this country and, in a report written recently, they have been summarized as follows:A. Several limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines in 1946. This report presents data obtained from the investigation of limestone deposits in the vicinity of Arlington, Snohomish County, Wash. The work consisted of surface surveys and sampling. Samples were taken where complete, or nearly complete, sections of limestone were exposed or where individual beds were exposed at a number of separate .localities. Areas were cleaned by blasting prior to sampling. Channel samples were cut where practical; otherwise chip samples taken. Twenty-one samples were taken. The locations of the samples and the analyses are shown on maps accompanying this report.
