Objective The main purpose of this video is to teach mine rescue personnel certain aspects of rescue work that are not traditionally taught. These include the strain caused by working continually under adverse conditions; the "survivor guilt" that occurs from being spared the fate of one's deceased cohorts; and the posttraumatic stress that may be experienced during the sometimes lengthy task of recovering the victims' bodies. Background On November 20, 1968, an explosion rocked the Farmington No. 9 Mine in northern West Virginia (figure 1). The explosion killed 78 of 99 miners who were working in the mine, including all but one member of the mine's rescue team. Some 30 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) conducted a video interview with Danny Kuhn (figure 2), the only Farmington No. 9 mine rescue team member who was not working that day and who did not die in the explosion. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are about 80 underground coal mine rescue teams in the United States, and according to the National Mining Association, there are more than 850 underground coal mines. This represents a significant decrease in both over the past decade. The low number of rescue teams is a concern because serious incidents, though fewer, still happen, and if a disaster occurs, there will be fewer rescue teams to respond. This would result in an increased need to use available human resources very efficiently. Much training to prepare these rescue teams still takes the form of what educators call "teaching to the test." In other words, teams practice in order to win mine rescue contests. This test-oriented approach has traditionally been augmented by interactions with others who have responded to real situations or by participating in actual incidents. Given few incidents and fewer rescue teams from whom to derive enrichment, the preparation of coal mine rescue personnel becomes a problem. Recently, more emphasis has been placed on active learning, such as working out problems in smoke. These sessions more nearly simulate the actual conditions that today's team members might rarely encounter. To properly prepare and retain the current coal mine rescue personnel who are left in the workforce, it is necessary not only to offer such hands-on experience, but also to replace the learning narratives that once were passed from team to team. The present video is intended to contribute in that capacity. Approach NIOSH researchers first learned of Mr. Kuhn in the fall of1998. Mr. Kuhn was contacted and agreed to an interview. An oral history interview was conducted with Mr. Kuhn in early November1998. After reviewing the videotape of the interview, researchers determined the content to be so rich as to warrant a second interview in a more formal setting. The second interview was done in early December 1998. During this interview, Mr. Kuhn spent about 2 hours describing the Farmington disaster, including the workplace climate leading up to the explosion, the events that took place in the 10 days after the explosion, and the nearly 10-year effort to safely and successfully recover most of the victims' bodies. The videotape of the second oral history interview with Danny Kuhn was reviewed and edited by NIOSH researchers for content. Careful attention was used to ensure that valuable information was presented, but within a reasonable timeframe. A detailed map of the Farmington No. 9 Mine was edited into the final video and used to highlight critical features as they were being described by Mr. Kuhn. Results and Accomplishments A 60-minute videotape and instructor's guide for use in safety training or other settings was completed. The target audience consists of all those who work in underground coal mines. This training video will help safety instructors better prepare mine rescue team members for the situations that they will encounter when engaging in extended rescue and recovery work. Stress-relief techniques and instrumentation have been developed through many years of research in the Bureau of Mines and successfully used to determine the in situ state of stress in rock. This report describes the Bureau's three-component borehole deformation gauge and the drilling equipment and accessories used with it. Operation and calibration procedures for the deformation gauge are discussed in detail, along with site selection and overcoring procedures. Information and references included in this publication provide a guide to the Bureau's cover-coring method for determining rock stress.

Preliminary evidence indicated that the Chattanooga Shale might constitute a potential vast low-grade source of uranium. Investigation by core drilling indicated that while the Chattanooga Shale may constitute a resource for the future, the very low (0.006 percent) average uranium content is not economic when compared with the relatively higher grade western ores. A total of approximately 12,000 feet of test drilling was done in 72 drillholes, and large samples were mined for extractive and metallurgical testing. An experimental mine site was selected on the basis of the drilling project.

To determine the feasibility of removing nonferrous metal impurities from automobile scrap by thermal treatment in a rotary kiln, the Bureau of Mines conducted four series of tests with synthetic scrap mixtures heated at various temperatures under oxidizing and reducing conditions. The treated scrap mixtures were melted in an electric-arc furnace and cast into small ingots for impurity evaluation. Analyses showed that the ingots were essentially free of residual metal impurities except for copper. Test data indicated that in an oxidizing atmosphere the percentage of copper removed increased with treatment temperature. Percent of copper removed in a reducing atmosphere was found not to be temperature dependent. A significant finding was that copper was embrittled under some of the operating conditions and was mechanically removed by fragmentation.

The use of continuous mining machines has greatly minimized the necessity for blasting in coal mines, even during pillar recovery; however, explosives are still used to blast stumps. The use of improper blasting materials, improper procedures, or both has caused mine explosions and fires, with loss of life and property damage. Researchers and manufacturers are continuously improving explosives and blasting accessories; use of the more recently developed materials will make the blasting operation safer. Extreme caution is mandatory when blasting stumps, as the ignition of methane or coal dust may trigger an explosion or cause a fire. Since the blasting of stumps will no doubt continue, although often unnecessarily, this paper summarizes recent findings published by the Bureau of Mines and recommends safer methods.

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates audio dosimeters, 3 sample units from each of 10 currently marketed brands. Each dosimeter was treated as a "black box" with the acoustic stimulus as the input and the accumulated dosage as the output. The dosimeter microphones were exposed to a sound field gener¬ated in an anechoic chamber. Characteristics evaluated include frequency response (100 to 8,000 Hz), level-time trade-off rate (88 to 117 db), status of calibration, crest-handling capability, and power consumption rate. Experi¬mental errors revealed by replication of the tests were found to be generally much smaller than variations in performance among the samples of any brand, and possibilities of further reducing the magnitude of these errors are discussed.

As part of a program to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the diffusion coefficients for ferric ions in synthetic copper leach solutions. Determination of ferric ion diffusion coefficients in typical dump leach solutions is necessary for predicting leaching rates of copper from large-scale leaching operations and for optimizing concentrations of ferric iron in solutions to maximize leaching efficiency. Derivative chronopotentiometry, an electroanalytical technique, was used to determine ferric ion diffusion coefficients. The diffusion coefficient decreased dramatically with increasing concentration of iron in solution. An empirical model was used to relate the ferric ion diffusion coefficient to the total amount of sulfate in solution. Measuring the diffusion coefficient dependence on temperature yielded an activation energy of 5.5 kcal/mole of ferric ion. Activity coefficients of ferric ions as a function of concentration were calculated from diffusion coefficient data.

The report gives a review of the methods of predicting mine subsidence; these methods are used particularly in European coalfields. The methods are subdivided into two groups, based on mathematical expressions either for the trough profile or for the influence of infinitesimal extraction elements. The fundamental relationships common to all methods described herein are the principles of superposition and of equivalent extraction areas. The involved parameters are derived from field observations. For calculating horizontal displacements, their relation to the slope of the subsidence profile is applied. The time-dependent development of the subsidence process is characterized by the empirical "time factor." Modifications for the case of inclined strata are considered. A brief review of experimental and theoretical model investigations is given.

The United States not only is the largest producer of phosphate rock but also manufactures and consumes greater quantities of phosphate products than any other country. New and expanding uses will increase even further the demand for this basic raw material. Only a small proportion of the total quantity of phosphate rock mined and marketed is consumed directly in a raw or unprocessed state; the vast bulk is chemically treated and converted into [ertilizer] and a wide variety of finished products that play a vital role in [r] national economy. Three fundamental methods are employed in decomposing phosphate rock. 1. Reduction by carbon at high temperatures. 2. Treatment with one or more acids. 3. Calcination or fusion with silica, sodium salts, magnesium minerals, or small quantities of phosphoric acid.

In the summer of 1950, Bureau of Mines engineers visited a number of coal-preparation plants in western Europe and Great Britain to obtain information on European and British coal-cleaning and froth-flotation practices. In view of the growing importance of froth flotation as a process for cleaning fine sizes of coal, it was felt that such data and information would be of value in this country, for, although froth flotation has been adopted for use in a few of our plants, it has not as yet been employed as extensively as in British and European preparation plants. Many of the important coal beds in western Europe, especially in the Ruhr Valley of Germany and in the Dutch coal-mining region of Limburg, Netherlands, are very friable, with the result that the run-of-mine product contains a large proportion of the sizes too fine to be treated successfully by any other method than froth flotation. Furthermore, the relatively high cost of producing coal from these beds has for many years made it economically feasible and desirable to treat the fines by froth flotation, especially in the coking-coal fields.

This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Ore on, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry opera ions, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the area generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser .shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total scrap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.

The Toncrae-Howard copper deposits in Floyd County, Va., were first mined about 1800. The property has been operated or under development at various times since then for iron, copper or sulfur, although the total production has been small. The deposit consists of a vein or zone of sulfide mineralization in schist composed mainly of pyrrhotite with minor copper values in the primary zone and some rich areas of copper mineralization in the altered zone. The Bureau of Mines, in an attempt to develop minable copper ore during the war, opened part of the mine for examination and sampling, deepened the shaft and other underground work, and drilled 29 holes totaling 2,187 feet.

The Bureau of Mines developed laboratory-scale processes to recover sodium phosphates and metal values from waste sludges generated by the phosphate treatment of automobile and appliance components. After treatment of the sludge with NaOH, followed by coke or hydrogen reduction and sintering, zinc and lead were recovered as fume; the sinter was separated by leaching into a metallic product, chiefly iron and nickel, and high-purity disodium or trisodium phosphate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation designed to evaluate the stress and deformation characteristics of fully grouted roof bolts subjected to various magnitudes of end loadings. The experiment and subsequent analysis were completed, utilizing axial deformation data obtained -ultrasonically from forty-one 4-ft, grade 40 roof bolts, with a total of 132 measurement locations along the lengths of the bolts. The ultrasonic measurement instrumentation used in this investigation allowed for elongation measurements without requiring extensive bolt modifications. The results indicate that approximately 39 pct o{ the applied end load dissipated within the first 3.4 in of the bolts. However, only 3 pct of the applied load was realized beyond 28 in of the grout column. Data are presented individually for every 6-in increment of bolt length, and analysis was performed using statistical, nonlinear equations developed for 5,000 and 8,000 lb loading conditions.

High-temperature heat-content values of gallium and scandium sesquioxides were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. The results fill gaps in the thermodynamic information for these compounds; no previous similar data existed. The heat-content values were combined with heats and entropies of formation to obtain free energies of formation of gallium and scandium sesquioxides to 2,000° K. The thermodynamic stabilities of the sesquioxides of aluminum, gallium, scandim, and yttrium were compared.

This report contains the findings of a study to perform a task and skill analysis of roof-bolting operations, with respect to the operational training requirements and to prepare detailed recommendations for the operational training system. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting underground coal mines, interviewing training and safety personnel, observing and interviewing roof-bolter operators, and reviewing present training programs and facilities. In conjunction with the mine visits an extensive literature search was conducted with emphasis on training, mine safety, and accidents involving the roof-bolting operation and roof-bolter operators. A number of training programs and training devices were considered resulting in the development of a recommended training program including training devices to be used and establishing training objectives.

The presence of sulphur compounds in petroleum and its products is, generally speaking, undesirable, and the problems involved in removing such compounds are of great importance to the petroleum refiner and to the manufacturer of gasoline. There are several types of these compounds which are dissimilar in physical and chemical characteristics, as evidenced by different objectionable features which they exhibit, and special treatments have been developed to meet conditions existing in various products. This paper deals with the treatment of natural-gas gasoline for the removal of certain sulphur compounds which, if not removed, impart on objectionable odor and in addition badly discolor the product. The presence of this particular type of sulphur compounds is detected by the "doctor" test.* In some instances natural-gas gasoline is purchased on "doctor" test specifications, and the ordinary purchaser, while not buying on "doctor" specifications, is insistent in his demand for a water white product. Gasoline which fails to meet the "doctor" test, if not received by the buyer within a few weeks after time Of manufacture, may be "off color" enough to warrant a deduction from the market price.

Provide the technology to remotely control a thin¬-seam continuous mining machine from a safe location hundreds of feet outby the working face in an underground room-and-pillar mine. Background and Approach Hard-wired or radio remote control of continuous mining machine has been commercially available since the early 1970's. This type of remote control, in low and high coal seams, situates the machine operator offboard, but within direct view of the underground coal face, Although positioned under supported roof, the operator can still be exposed to face area hazards that include roof-rib falls, dust, methane explosions, and equipment congestion. The U.S. Bureau of Mines approach has been to put the operator into a protected compartment at a location away from the working face. Since 1979, the Bureau has investigated innovative methods to better protect face area workers in under¬ground room-and-pillar mines. In 1989, the Bureau demonstrated an offboard, computer-based remote con¬trol system in a West Virginia highwall mining operation that stationed the operator hundreds of feet away from the working face. In late 1992, much of this technology, plus improvements, Was used to demonstrate, on the surface, how a thin-scam continuous mining machine could be remotely controlled 200 feet from the machine in a 36-inch working height.
