In 1986 the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 years; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. nonmetallic mining workforce from March through September 1986. Similar reports have been prepared for the metallic, stone, and sand and gravel mining industries, as well as for the entire metal and nonmetal mining (includes metallic, stone, sand and gravel, and nonmetallic industries) sector and the cool mining sector.

Introduction of radioactive elements into ore samples and/or pregnant liquors and radiometric tracing thereof have greatly improved control of fusion and extraction studies on beryllium ores and products. Extractive metallurgical research on beryllium, normally guided by the usual laborious analytical methods, is both costly and slow. Recognition of this problem by the Bureau of Mines led to the development and application of radioisotope tracer techniques" as a substitute for chemical analysis at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center, The result was that much faster progress at significantly lower cost was achieved. This report discusses the problems encountered and resolved in using radioactive tracers and radiometric methods, defines the conditions and techniques for their effective use, and delineates the limitations and flexibility inherent in applying such methods in laboratory-scale beryllium research.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted to gain a basis for recommending methods to predict and prevent the occurrence of cutter roof failure, a common ground control problem in mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin. This was accomplished by determining the geologic and engineering factors responsible for cutter development at six mines affected by cutter roof failure. Three distinct factors were found to be initiators of cutter roof failure: (1) high horizontal roof stress, (2) surface topographic variations, and (3) geologic anomalies. Effective control of cutter roof was obtained through improved bolting techniques, entry and mine reorientation, and entry and pillar size modifications, but only when selected based on the actual cause of failure.

Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff members.THE BLAST FURNACE AND PLANTThe general lay-out of the recently built (1917) Bunker Hill plant has been given in the technical press in articles that were cited in Report of Investigations 3088. In addition it may be noted that the description of an ideal smelter given by Riddell 5 a year later fits the Bunker Hill smelter very well, with some changes, such as the location of the stack, made necessary by topography. For purposes of this article on the blast furnace it may suffice to state that the plant is one of the ""side hill location"" type. The various successively lower benches may roughly be considered as made for (1) the stack, (2) Cottrells and bag houses, (3) Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines with the equipment or bins for handling or mixing the feed and storing the finished product, sinter, and (4) the blast furnace feed floor with a slightly rising gradient to the bottom of the bins for sinter, feed, and take. The lowest bench (5) might be considered that of the blast furnace tapping floor at which or at appropriately slightly lower elevations are located the units for softening, refining, and treating precious metals, and for casting and loading lead. A very careful study of grades was made in order to be able to handle the products easily. All units were left with at least one end open to permit expansion of the plant, it desired, and each unit was separated from the other, evidently so that the operators on one level would be annoyed as little as posssible with the products made on another."

Underground miners are exposed to some of the highest levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the United States. Therefore, it is important to monitor the exposure of miners to DPM, but it can be difficult because of the complex composition of DPM and the number of interferences. Currently, elemental carbon (EC) is used as a surrogate because it makes up a significant fraction of the DPM and is not affected by interferences. Standard measurement methods for EC can be time consuming and only record end of shift results. In this research, a laser absorption technique that enables one to measure EC concentration in near real time was shown to be a beneficial tool. The real time data showed that the fresh air being drawn into a stone mine was not properly reaching the working area and needed to be redirected to decrease DPM concentrations. The real time data also provided a more accurate efficiency ofan environmental cab compared to just using the standard method by detecting the opening of the cab's window and door. The EC optical monitor was also worn by researchers in a mine to show how it can give not only the average concentration for the shift but also reveal when and where a miner is exposed to DPM. The annual survey of the fuel-briquet industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 21 fuel-briquet plants in 11 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for fuel briquets in the United States has gradually declined since 1948, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 36 to 21. Also, the annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased, although not a proportionate amount because most of the plants that were abandoned were small and in most instances had a designed capacity of less than 25,000 tons per year. In 1956 the 21 active plants had an annual capacity of 3.7 million tons (table 2), which was only 20 percent less than the total capacity of the 36 plants in 1948. This indicates that most of the larger plants have remained active, even though operating at reduced rates, and the average capacity of the industry has increased from 130,000 tons per plant in 1948 to 177,000 tons in 1956. Since 1948 operating rates have decreased from 67 percent to 41 percent of annual capacity.

Experimental data are presented on the autoignition temperature (AIT) characteristics of the hydrocarbon jet fuel, JP-6, in various oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres under conditions of constant volume and constant pressure. AIT's of this fuel in air varied little with fuel injection pressure but increased greatly with decreasing fuel content at low fuel-air-ratios. They also increased with decreasing oxygen content of the fuel vapor-oxidant atmosphere. Consistent with thermal ignition theory, the ignition temperatures increased with decreasing initial pressure, ignition delay, and vessel radius; expressions are given which define the observed variation of AIT with these variables for JP-6 fuel vapor-air mixtures. The significance of autoignition temperature data obtained using various ignition criteria is discussed to show the usefulness of such data in evaluating fire and explosion hazards. In addition, data are presented on the extent of oxidation that occurs prior to autoignition of this fuel in air at various temperatures.

This section presents highlights of world economic and mineral industry performance in 1982, a year characterized by continued recession, and selected 1983 forecasts of economic indicators of importance to the mineral industry, some of which indicate a modest improvement in the economies of the United States and Western Europe. The U.S. Economy in 1982 In 1982 U.S. gross national product (GNP) in current dollars increased at a rate of 4 percent, but GNP adjusted for inflation (real GNP) declined at a rate of 1.8 percent. Yearend 1982 real GNP was at roughly the same level as in 1980 (table 1). Thus no growth in real terms had taken place in the United States during the 1980-82 period.

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The equation developed for predicting percolation rates is as follows: 1nP20 = 11.39147 + 2.853422 1n(VR X D10) + 0.1747436 VR X Cu -178.8039 D10 X D50 + 311.7034 (DSO )3, (1) where P20 = percolation rate, inches per hour at 20° C; correction factors for other temperatures are given in the text, VR = void ratio, dimensionless, D10 = effective size (diameter in millimeters of the 10-percent-finer grain size), Cu = coefficient of uniformity (ratio of the diameter of the 60-percent-finer grain size over D10), D50 = average size (diameter in millimeters of the 50-percent-finer grain size), and In = natural logarithm (log to the base e). The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.

In the production of oil end gas, engineering methods have been applied less than in any other branch of the oil industry. While refineries, gasoline plants, pipe-line and other transportation systems, and even drilling wells to a great extent, take advantage of engineering skill, the tendency has been to assume that the handling of producing wells is merely a mechanical and routine matter. At present few companies employ engineers to study oil and gas production methods with a view of increasing the general efficiency of recovery, but in vie, of the advancement in other lines of the petroleum industry by the application of engineering principles, does it not seem likely that the production branch may benefit also by engineering studies? Engineering applied to the handling of producing wells falls under two general headings, - first, the efficient handling of wells from the time of their inception in order to obtain the greatest possible ultimate production, and, second, the rehabilitation of old properties that have been handled carelessly in their early lives. To date, the engineering work that has been done on oil production problems falls mostly in the second class. For example, the use of vacuum and the application of compressed air have proved successful in some instances in stimulating wells of low gas pressure. These methods are costly to apply and are adapted to small wells in which the gas is almost exhausted, or in which the original gas pressure is negligible. The experiments described in this paper fall under the first heading, as they were made with an idea of learning toe probable extent to which the gas production of an oil well can be curtailed while gas in the sand is still plentiful, and thus saved for doing work during the later period of a well's life. Because of the scope of the experiments, this paper does not include a discussion of back pressure on flowing wells or for purposes other than cutting down the gas produced with each barrel of oil.

"INTRODUCTION A report giving experiments dealing with factors affecting the floatation of the most commonly occurring silver minerals was published years ago. At that time we could not obtain suitable samples of many of the so-called sulfo-salts of the base metals, which are generally silver--bearing and which comprise an appreciable percentage of the natural silver ores. Since Leaver and Woolf's work was published, samples of impure tennantite and enargite have been obtained, and considerable experimental flotation work has been done with synthetic mixtures prepared from these samples. During the present national emergency, research dealing solely with the recovery of gold and silver must necessarily be curtailed. However, many deposits of strategic minerals and critical base metals contain an appreciable amount of gold and silver, the recovery of which would aid greatly in recovering the strategies by taking care of a considerable part of the cost of treatment. Because of this, the recovery of precious metals should not be overlooked entirely. As the Bureau of Mines is now utilizing all of its facilities for the development of increased domestic productions of strategic and critical minerals, this is the last report not concerned primarily with such minerals that will be published until the war ends."

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

The presence of salt in crude petroleum has been known for many years, but recently the percentage of chloride salts of calcium, magnesium, and sodium produced with some crude oils has increased to such an extent that the removal of the salty compounds is imperative for some refiners and their presence causes considerable apprehension for others. The exact reason for this increase of salts is not known definitely, but in all probability a combination of factors contributes to the condition. The most important are acidizing of wells, development of new fields producing crude oils of greater salt content, and the depletion of old fields with an attending increase in the production of emulsified brine. A study of the consumption of reagents used in flotation gives useful data as to the market which employment of the flotation process creates for the manufacturers of the necessary chemicals and oils, and furnishes a useful clue to the trends in flotation practice influencing the choice of reagents used and the' extent to which new reagents are displacing less suitable older reagents. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to cover both of these phases of the consumption of reagents in flotation. Unfortunately, however, the data collected in tie various districts have not been equally informative; some operators have reported very completely both the consumption of reagents and the metallurgical results obtained therewith, while others were apparently unable to supply these figures in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tonnage of ore treated by flotation, as reported. This table shows that flotation has been most largely used in the concentration of copper ores, next in complex lead-zinc ores, followed by lead ores, zinc ores, miscellaneous ores, and copper-iron ores.

The Haldane gas-analysis apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines is patterned after the device developed by Haldane 4/ and differs from it only in structural modifications that have been added to facilitate operation and simplify construction. The apparatus was developed to permit determination of carbon dioxide, combustible gases, and oxygen with a degree of accuracy not attainable with apparatus of the types ordinarily used for the analysis of fuel gases, flue gases, and similar mixtures. The Haldane apparatus is used by the Bureau of Mines chiefly in the analysis of air samples collected in coal and metal mines and other underground workings and is applied also in the analysis of many other types of gas mixtures when accurate determination of certain constituents is desired.

The Bureau of Mines conducted pioneering batch and laboratory cyclic tests that simulated plant operation in developing a procedure for acidulating phosphate rock with fluosilicic acid. Both high-grade deslimed phosphate rock and low-grade phosphate rock samples were treated. The most promising results were obtained by acidulating des limed high-grade material. In a series of seven cyclic tests, 85.4 percent of the P20S was recovered in solutions. The average P2O5 content of the phosphoric acid-monocalcium phosphate solutions of the first step was 156 grams per liter, and the average fluorine content was 4.7 grams per liter. Residues had an average fluorine content of 30.7 percent and contained 83.9 percent of the total fluorine in the charge materials. Some fluorine was lost by volatilization.

"INTRODUCTION This report presents factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in the course of an investigation of the Antler mine in the Cedar Valley mining district, Mohave County, Ariz.The Antler property was first examined by Thomas L. Chapman, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, on December 18, 1943, and January 28, 1944. In June 1945, A. H. Wadsworth, Jr., and R. L. Griggs, geologists, Federal Geo¬logical Survey, examined the Antler mine and several other mines in the district. Both Chapman and Wadsworth recommended diamond drilling of the Antler property to determine the character and extent of ore deposition.In October 1946, the surface and underground workings were surveyed by George Huseman, Mining engineer, and T. M. Romslo, project engineer. The following month Eldred. D. Wilson, geologist of the Arizona Bureau of Mines, assisted by the project engineer, mapped the geology. Subsequently trails were built to drilling sites and diamond drilling started January 16, 1947. The project was completed April 25, 1947.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Researchers working for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are developing ways to protect the health of miners. Part of that effort is devoted to improving the air quality in underground stone mines by developing ventilation techniques that can be used in these types of operations. The air quality in these large opening nonmetal mines can be significantly improved by using diesel particulate matter (DPM) controls along with sufficient ventilation quantities to remove contaminants. Practical methods of ventilating these underground stone mines can be accomplished by using mine layouts that course and separate ventilation air through the use of stoppings. The design, construction, and maintenance of effective stoppings in large openings have been a real challenge to mine operators. Several different types of stoppings have and can be used for this application. The choice of stopping design, material used, and construction techniques should be dependent upon a number of factors such as the intended life and effectiveness desired.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

The selective recovery of nickel and zinc from a waste phosphate solution by solvent extraction was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad program to recover valuable metals and compounds from industrial wastes, and to reduce the associated land and water pollution caused by dumping these wastes. The waste, which resulted from the phosphation of automboile bodies, yielded 99 percent of both the nickel and the zinc by extraction with dinonyl naphthalene sulfonic acid (DNSA) and di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (EHPA), respectively. Dilute sulfuric acid was used to recover the metals and regenerate the solvents.
