High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. In the Scurry Reef field, Scurry County, Tex., a study was made to determine the physical properties of the oil in all parts of the reservoir by a new method developed for this study. The method involved correlation of data from a survey 1 of the gravity of the produced oil, from measurements of gas-oil ratios on key wells selected to give representative data for the entire reservoir, and from laboratory analyses of reservoir oil samples. A field survey was made of the API gravities of the produced oil by testing oil samples from 107 key wells. Precise gas-oil-ratio tests were made on 45 key wells that were producing under comparable separator-operating conditions. Subsurface-oil samples were obtained from seven wells, selected to provide reservoir oils ranging approximately from a minimum to a maximum in saturation pressure. The physical properties of the subsurface-oil samples were determined, and correlations were made of these laboratory data with the field gas-oil-ratio test data. These correlations were then used to estimate physical properties of the oil throughout the reservoir. A logical procedure of determining the variations in physical properties of reservoir oils in most fields is to obtain and analyze subsurface-oil samples from enough key wells to provide an ample coverage of the field. Under this procedure, data from a large number of samples would be needed to provide the desired information on the Scurry Reef field, as it is one of the largest known in the United States.

Mechanical cleaning of bituminous coal in the United States was begun about 1875, with plants in western Pennsylvania and Illinois. The United States Geological Survey began to record the quantity of washed bituminous coal in 1906; and the series was carried forward to 1923, except that no data were collected, for 1922. This statistical work was transferred to the Bureau of Mines in 1925, and the collection of data on mechanical cleaning was resumed in 1927. Data collected before 1927 include only the coal that was washed at the mines and do not include that cleaned by pneumatic methods at the mines and that cleaned at central washeries operated by consumers.2/ The total bituminous coal washed in 1906 was less than 10 million net tons. In 1927, the first year for which complete figures are available for all types of mechanical cleaning, 28 million net tons of bituminous coal were cleaned in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.5 and 3 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year product Lon period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 Indexes. Initial capital investment is $33.8 million for the 1.5-MM-tpy mine and $61 million for the 3-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $52.5 and $94.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $34.87 and $31.31 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $12.06 and $10.94 per ton for the 1.5- and 3-MM-tpy mines.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 delegated to the Bureau of Mines a yearly program of health inspections. Respirable coal mine dust concentrations are measured by Bureau inspectors. Samples of respirable coal mine dust are weighed to determine dust concentration and then analyzed for ash and quartz content. This paper describes the laboratory procedure for determining the percent quartz in the respirable coal mine dust samples.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

Studies in grinding efficiencies carried out at the Midvale plant of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. and at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

In conjunction with the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation in 1981 and 1982 of the Santa Rosa Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Riverside County, California. The Bureau of Mines is responsible for the mineral survey of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas in and near the WSA. A literature search was completed to obtain information concerning mineral occurrences and mining activity that relate to the WSA. A field investigation inside, and up to 1 mi outside, the boundary of the WSA, disclosed one prospect. This prospect was surveyed by compass and tape, and five samples were taken to determine the representative mineral content. No attempt was made to expose concealed mineralization or to re-open caved workings. All five samples were analyzed by fire assay for gold and silver and by colorimetric methods for tungsten. Two of the samples were analyzed by semi quantitative spectrographic methods to determine if any unsuspected elements were present. All analyses are furnished in this report except for the semi-quantitative spectrograhic analyses. Complete sample analyses are available for public inspection at the Bureau of Mines, Intermountain Field Operations Center, Building 20, Denver Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225.

The Ely mine, which at one time was the largest producer of copper in the United States, has been idle for the past 30 years. A remarkably continuous ore shoot probably averaging 100 feet wide and 19 feet thick was mined on about a 25° slope for 3,400 feet on the incline. The ore was massive sulfides containing chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. The estimated production of the Ely mine is 400,000 tons of ore averaging 3.3 percent copper. Because of the critical position of copper during the recent war, a search for extensions and recurrences of parallel ore shoots at the Ely deposit seemed warranted. The Bureau of Mines surveyed selected areas by geophysical methods, diamond-drilled nine holes, and sampled mine dumps during its investigations, which began in 1942 and terminated in 1946. The diamond drilling totaled 5,229 feet. The logs of the holes include chemical analyses of mineralized sections.

The Dike and Eaton veins in Crittenden County, Ky. (fig. 1), are along northwesterly trending relief fractures that lie between two northeastward striking major faults - the Moore Hill and- the Levias, in Crittenden County, Ky. The veins contain small, narrow, irregular ore bodies of fluorspar with subordinate quantities of sphalerite and galena. Gravel fluorspar was found on the surface in the Eaton vein, and open-cut mining was in progress on the W. M. Conyer property about 1900. Discovery of fluorspar in the Dike vein came much later, about 1933, on the W. H. LaRue tract, but the principal production on the Dike vein started after the discovery of gravel spar in 1938 on the land of the P. J. Gilless estate. Production from the Eaton vein was estimated at 9,400 tons and that from the Dike vein at 15,700 tons, a total of 25,100 tons. A large part of this production was gravel fluorspar from within 50 foot of the surface. Beneath the gravel spar the veins are very narrow, averaging 2 to 2.5 feet in width, and the ore shoots are small. The deepest mine level was 140 feet below the surface, and the deepest shaft 150 foot. Orb was concentrated by log washer or sent unwashed to custom mills at Marion, Ky. about 6 miles distant.

"INTRODUCTION The technical studies conducted by the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines have been summarized in a series of publications issued annually for the past 10 years. 3/ The following account covers studies undertaken from July 1, 1944 to June 30, 1945. The work is set forth under a number of main headings to correspond to the organizational structure of the division, the various activities being under the immediate direction of unit chiefs, who report to the author. Specific credit it due to the unit leader and his assistants.Determination of Ignition TemperaturesThe ignition temperature of mixtures of isobutane and air were determined by the static method using a 131-cc. quartz bull. 5/ The results obtained follow: Prevention of Benzene-Air Explosions by Addition of Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide The elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases is a part of the work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in promoting safety. Explosions can be prevented by the maintenance of concentrations that lie outside the inflammable limits. A procedure has been developed whereby the inflammable limits of many complex gaseous mixtures may be calculated in a rather simple manner without requiring toilsome laboratory experiments. This procedure has been outlined in a number of previous publications. 6./ During the fiscal year under review, essential data required for the calculations of complex combustible gas mixtures containing varying percentages of benzene were obtained. Benzene vapor is a normal constituent of many manufactured gases and is widely used in the solvent industry and in the manufacture of high explosives."

The volumetric determination of uranium according to the method of Sill and Peterson (6),3/ which uses cerate oxidimetry after the separation of interferences such as sulfides and cupferrates, has been used for some time by the Bureau of Mines and gives satisfactory results for many of the samples tested. However, in those instances where the uranium content did not exceed a few tenths of 1 percent and iron was present in the range of 10 to 40 percent (as Fe203),4/ the method was cumbersome and unreliable. The need for a more accurate procedure for the determination of small amounts of uranium in the presence of large amounts of iron, such as in shale or black sands, prompted this investigation. The Bureau desired that materials containing as little as 60 p.p.m. of uranium be assayed within reasonable limits of accuracy. One of the primary aims of this work has been to eliminate, as far as possible, the necessity for repeated cup ferron extractions.

Work has been carried out in the development and testing of carbon monoxide (CO) detection devices which use silica-gel impregnated with metal salts. If carbon monoxide is present, the ?detection gel? (the treated silica-gel) changes from a yellow to a blue-green or blue color. The detection gel "regenerates", i.e., returns to its original yellow color, within 4-24 hours after removal from air containing CO. The detection gel exhibits a threshold of CO response which can be adjusted over a wide range of CO concentrations, typically from 50-500 ppm in air. The preparation of detection gel using salts of palladium, molybdenum and copper is described. Also reported are the results of testing the detection gel&apos;s response to carbon monoxide under varying conditions of temperature and humidity and in the presence of some potentially interfering gases. Low levels of hydrogen sulfide (~ 5 ppm)1 nitrogen dioxide (< 7 ppm), and acetylene (> 200 ppm) were found to affect the detection gel. Temperature and humidity were also found to affect the detection gel&apos;s response. Increasing temperature shortens the gel?s response time while increasing the humidity delays the gel?s response and alters the threshold of the gel. A brief discussion of the further research and development necessary to stabilize the detection gel?s desirable characteristics is included. Descriptions of testing equipment and procedures are covered in detail.

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

During the past 15 years the number of reportable mine fires has declined. A decline in the number of reportable fires is a gross indicator that allows experts to say something about the underground coal industry generally: There has been some improvement in overall mine fire preparedness. However, such an indicator is less reliable as a predictor of readiness at any particular operation. An indication of fire fighting preparedness would have to be assessed from evidence gathered at the mine site. In other words, there are two levels from which to view the problem. On a general level, there has been significant improvement in the industry&apos;s fire response capabilities over the past two decades. Specifically, however, little data has been gathered on a site-by-site basis to determine what improvements might be made on a local level. These improvements would move beyond regulatory compliance. It is expected that this manuscript, based on work conducted at an underground coal mine in the western United States, will help to focus attention on some central concerns involving this critical issue.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). After evaluating preceding studies and designs of lightweight supports, ESD selected the all-hydraulic and the hydromechanical concepts for detailed design and fabrication. Further analysis and testing showed that the all-hydraulic design was economically justified and met all the crucial engineering, manufacturing, and design criteria identified during the evaluation phase. Following Bureau of Mines approval of the detailed design, four all-hydraulic support models were fabricated. Once functional and structural testing was successfully completed, 40 additional units were constructed and distributed for in-mine testing. The units were very well-liked by all three demonstration mines. The wide- spread interest in supports for seam heights greater than 8 feet led to expansion of the design data package. ESD designed four basic models to cover the new height range, but no hardware has yet been fabricated for the new design.
